Rules:

Battles will be based and decided on RP skill and tactical advantage. Meaning those who show better tactics that would win the battle will win. Or in other cases the combatants, in which case this won’t apply, might already have decided the outcome.

Population is at a max of 15,000,000. The max military size is 1.5%. Armies can move at a max of 10 miles per day. Take into account supply trains, terrain, and weather. Make sure you resort to the maps and ensure you are correct in every factor of your army. There is nothing more annoying then finding out an army of thousands has marched across a desert or mountain range at 10 miles a day with no roads in sight, and pounced on your capital.

All OOC comments and concerns should be brought up on the OOC/Idea thread. Any fighting OOC should be resolved quickly, this is only a game and there is no need to get anger.

Whenever there is a change in the map I will try to edit it as fast as possible.

King Fredrick sat in his large chair at his desk. He breathed slowly, focusing on the map on the opposite wall. It showed the map of the known regions of the world. The United Kingdom took up a small portion of land in the northwest. ‘Insignificant, small, and not at all frightening at all! How is one to prove his nations worth to others?’ He removed the crown from his head and placed it on the desk. Lord Beckett, General of the UK armies sensed something troubled his king. But remained quiet, not to break the awkward silence that gripped the room. The queen entered the room, taking no notice to the General who stood and bowed.

“Fredrick, assemble the armies. Send the boys off to do something. Flaunt your nations strength. I know what is the matter with you. You must go and stretch your legs. Go and inspect the local Guard Regiment. You will feel better.”

The General remained quiet again, even though he knew that assembling the armies of the Kingdom might not be the right thing. Sending the wrong message to other nations. Beckett was sure the King, and his nation were not ready for a war. Just cause the King was feeling down, that is no excuse to assemble the armies and spend more money then necessary. But the Queen was a tough one, she was hard and strong willed. Even if Beckett managed to convince the King that raising the armies was a bad idea when they went out and inspected the Guards, the Queen would change his mind when he returned. One way or another now the Queen would have at least one of the armies prepped for a non-existent war. But knowing the queen she will find a war to get the nation involved in. ‘Bitch, all she wants is blood and glory, and she won’t be spilling a pint of her blood, no the loyal lads of this country who blindly follow the King will.’ He scowled in his chair.

“Maybe your right, I shall go for a walk. Lord Beckett, care to join me? We shall go see the new rifle regiment at the garrison. I have yet to see these new weapons that have been costing me a fortune.” He stood up. He wore his military uniform of the Royal Navy, a blue coat with white pants, and a red sash around his waist with a belt that held his brilliant sword. His chest bore several medals of achievement. Not his own but his fathers before him. He served in the Navy as a prince and was involved in no conflicts that took to the sea. Rather his frigate had bombarded a city during a siege and that was about it.

He left his crown and picked up his bicorne on his way out of the room, followed by the Queen, Beckett and various aides. He walked to the stables and got on top of his white horse, the sable gold encrusted with the Royal emblem. The aids and General followed on their horses. They rode through the countryside to avoid the busy streets of St. Myhre and followed the road out to the garrison. The sentries were frightened as the King’s Colors were seen riding towards them with a large party of horsemen. The Guard party was alerted and quickly assembled in the drill square. The other regiments forming columns with their standards out in front and a Highlander squealed his bagpipes to life and snare drums sounded off in Maple Leaf Forever. The king was known for showing up unexpected and the entire garrison got better at quick responses. Several times the King tried to sneak up, but alas the fort sat in the middle of a large wheat field, and you could see as far as the city walls.

The King rode his horse at break neck speed trying to break away from his aids and flag party, his beast of a horse tossing dirt high as it thundered its way to the fort. Soldiers begun to cheer as the race continued. The aides horses tried to keep up, even try and beat him to the fort, but the King’s horse was just too big and entered the gates and raced past the lined up regiments who cheered and waved their hats in the air, some pumping their fists.

The General remained at the trot not taking part with the race but stayed with the King’s Standards. The fort’s guns fired three empty rounds in salute as the flags entered the garrison. These men would follow the king to hell and back. “Poor bastards.” Mumbled the General, who knew it was really the Queen at the helm of the Kingdom.
Terror Incognitia

The Tyrant surveyed his office. The large map, upon the table. The men, his advisors, arrayed about it.
"Well, Gentlemen? I ask your advice for one very good reason, and that reason is that I want to know what you think."
Admiral Thomas Bailey was first to speak. Naval representative on the Privy Council, his was a voice that spoke of experience, long and hard in his country's service.
"Well sir, we all know that our trust for the Stokolites is not great. But what do we gain by this? Even if Rechburg troops could reach the coast of Laurasia, they wouldn't be able to get here. The Navy would see to that.
To interfere in a private deal between two powers would risk much, in this case for little gain."
Thomas Milne, Lord of the Treasury, was the accountant. He spoke like one, dry and precise. You could almost see the little columns of words spoken matched against words intended, with a little total at the bottom.
"Tyrant, Gentlemen, we do not wish to risk massive expenditure such as a war would necessitate. We already spend q-quite enough on just keeping all these expensive formations up and running, without using them all up on some unnecessary enterprise."
General Daniel Weatherstone was last. Others were present, of course...but with opinion having coalesced, they would rely on their delegates to speak for them, in the main.
"Tyrant!" he boomed. "Honourable Gentlemen! We all know that Rechburg and Stoklomolvi have signed an aggressive pact.
Since Rechburg has no coastline this can only come into effect against, or with the aid of, the Maldorians, Kronstadtia, or the United Kingdom.
The proximity of both Maldorians and Kronstadtia to ourselves makes the potential of a combination somewhat threatening. So we are quite within our rights to act in this case.
What is more, with our far greater naval force, we can offer Rechburg the assurance of landing a significant force in their aid. The Stokolites have but empty promises and flat barges that would be sunk by a stiff breeze. We have a better offer for them, and it is to our advantage."
The Tyrant sat back, and considered this for a while.

"In awareness of the risks, I believe this is a suitable course. Please ensure a message departs for Rechburg post haste."

Coded message to the Incognitian Ambassador, Rechburg, to be hand delivered to the Rechburg authorities (aka SIC: )
We are aware of your deal with Stoklomolvi. We consider it to be either meaningless or threatening to our interests. In exchange for rescinding the said deal, we offer you a unilateral defence pact whereby any incursion into your lands will be responded to by an Incognitian invasion of the aggressor.
Unlike your Stokolite 'allies', we have the naval muscle to get such a force to it's destination.
Regards, The Tyrant.
Stoklomolvi

[OOC: Technically, Stoklomolvi has no adjective. The word "Stokolite" wouldn't exist in Stoklomolvi records. The word Stoklomolvi would be the adjective and the noun.]

Duke Leopold’s Office- Ratisbon.
Duke Leopold swilled the last of the beer down, slamming the mug on his desk. He raised himself slowly looking around the room. Seated opposite him was First Minister Montgelas, a small man, as a result of premature balding he wore a wig that never seemed to sit well on his head. His clothes were always disheveled and looked as if he had slept in them, however despite his untidy appearance he was an administrative genius and a very ruthless supporter of his Duke.
The Duke stood looking at Montgelas, then looked down at the empty mug.

“That’s a damn fine beer Montgelas, damn fine”
“Aye it is sire, a brewer from Paring has been working on a new type of hops, and he said it adds body to our traditional beer”
“New hops, eeh Montgelas, where from?” enquired the Duke as he moved from the desk to the window.
“I belief its from Stoklomoloi, though the brewer purchased his recent order through the Kronstadians sire”.
“Well we need to find a reliable source for the hops, this beer would be a great asset” declared the Duke.

“Aye it would sire, but really we need to discuss these new proposals from Stoklomloi and Incognitia”
“Yes of course Montgelas, but I am waiting for Prince Wrede and Prince Joseph to arrive”
Montgelas became worried, why were the military being invited to a Foreign Affairs discussion.
“Sire, is it wise to involve the military in this matter”?

They were interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Come” called the Duke.
The door was opened by a elderly man, dressed in his smart military uniform Prince Wrede strode in, bowed slightly at the waist and moved directly to the Duke who was peering out the window.
Montgelas couldn’t help notice how Prince Wrede presence in a room demanded recognition. Though a man in his late sixties he was every inch a military man. Of course pondered the First Minister to himself, he is so like the Dukes father; as he should be since he was the Dukes uncle.
Again a tap at the door and in strode a smart young man, dressed in a military uniform as well.
Montgelas looked admiringly at the young Prince Joseph, the heir of Rechburg. Joseph quietly made his way over to Montgelas, shaking his hand strongly.
“Well met, my dear Prince” declared Montgelas,
“More so, for myself” Joseph said.
Leaning over the desk he noticed the beer mug, picking it up he smiled
“Well father I should have known, you have heard about the new beer then”
The Duke moved back to the desk, looking at his son admiringly.
His son was a man to be proud off, he was tall, handsome and every bit the soldier. According to Prince Wrede, he has the makings off being another Dark Prince, he had the feel for war.
“It’s a fine brew Joseph, a fine brew indeed. In fact I was just saying to Montgelas that we should think about purchasing some of the new strain of hops. It has potential”.

Montgelas taking an opportunity to interrupt.
“Sire it is urgent we discuss these proposals as the messenger is waiting to leave for Stoklomoloi".
“Indeed, indeed Montgelas and we shall”.
He moved from the desk to a suite of fine leather lounge seats at the far end of his office.
Indicating to the chairs,
“Please gentlemen, be seated”.
Once seated he casually pointed to Montgelas.
“The Foreign Minister has news gentleman, and its timely news indeed”.
Montgelas felt a little uneasy at having the military being involved in clearly was his domain.
“The issue is this” said Montgelas as he picked up a dossier with the gold embossed Wolfs head on it.
“We have received a proposal from Stoklomoloi, it is interesting”
He handed the dossier to the Duke who immediately passed it on to Prince Joseph.

“The proposal from Stoklomoloi was the first to arrive; it proposes an offensive and defensive alliance between our two nations. The problem with the proposal as it sits is that there is no details, details such as how we can reach them; or indeed how they can reach us.”
The First Minister now leant forward and picked up a second folder,
Just a few hours ago we received a second proposal, one from Incognitia.”
Again passing the folder to the Duke, he continued.
The Incognitians make an interesting offer; they wish us to rescind the proposal with Stoklomoloi, for which they will unilaterally offer us a defensive alliance.
The Foreign Minister added
“They also added that they consider any agreement with Stoklomoloi against their interests, so this pointed barb, must be considered as well”.
The Duke rose from his chair, walked around behind it, leaning on its high back with his elbows, he said
“Well gentleman, there it is, two proposals, what do you think”.
Prince Wrede was the first to speak
“ Well the obvious problem with any alliance with people on Gondwana is how the bloody hell do we get there to help them. Christ Leopold we don’t even have a canoe, let alone a ship.”
He leaned over placing the documents back on the table.
“To me, the choice is obvious; we must go with Incognitia”.
Prince Joseph nodded
“I agree father, If Incognitia have declared they will unilaterally come to our aid, and clearly we cannot get to help Stoklomoloi, then there is little to choose from”.

The Duke looked directly at Montgelas,
“Sire I urge caution here, but I do agree with Prince Wrede and Prince Joseph. In particular since we have no wish to get into any offensive alliances.
Though we have agreed in principle to an agreement with Stoklomoloi, we have not discussed this agreement in principle and therefore it has not been ratified.
I am concerned however that Incognitia is prepared to be sabre rattling against a neighbor so aggressively, this early in the campaign season.”

The Duke rose from leaning on the chair, he walked over to the desk and retrieved his favorite pipe, it was originally the Dark Dukes pipe and Leopold had retrieved it from the Ratisbon Museum. In his mind this pipe was too important and personal to his family, to merely sit in a glass case. Besides it was such a damn fine pipe.
He lifted the pipe to his lips, paused and returned to his chair, now holding the pipe in his hand he waved it around rather pointedly.
“There is also another matter”
Everyone turned, “The United Kingdom may be mobilizing”.
The Foreign Minister and incidentally master spy quietly nodded to himself.
The Duke continued.
“Our agents in the United Kingdom have discovered the Queen is getting bored, and we all know what that means”.
Prince Joseph now understood why he had been invited to what was normally a political issue, he had been the last one in this room to visit the United Kingdom.
The Duke, looked up at Prince Joseph as he lit his pipe.
“Well Joseph, you have been there; what say you”.

Joseph looked at his father
“If the Queen wants war father, you have every right to be worried, but then so does every nation on Laurentia. She is determined and she gets her way”.
Prince Wrede wriggled uncomfortably,
“But surely the King has the final say”

Leopold puffed and released a long smokey breath.
“The power in the United Kingdom rests with the Queen, Christ, that bloody witch has more balls than the King ever had, and whats more she is a better soldier”

Joseph interrupted, “So father do you think will she attack us’.
“I doubt it Joseph, but she will sabre rattle with all of Laurentia because she is bored” said the Duke
However we have to be careful, so we will match their mobilization with each step of our own. If they stop we stop, if they go for it, we will be there to meet them.’

Prince Wrede and Joseph looked at each other, knowingly that the midnight oils will be burning in Ratisbon for the next few nights.
“Meanwhile Montgelas I want you to take a trip north to see the Queen personally and see what she is up to”.

Montgelas sighed deeply.
“Immediately Sire, but what about Incognitia and Stoklomoloi”?
The Duke sighed deeply
“Incognitia, we will have to decline the agreement with Stoklomoloi as unworkable”
Montgelas nodded,
“Yes sire I will get the Incognitians agreement prepared for your signature, I will recall the Sokolomoloi messenger.

The Duke leaned back in his chair enjoying the last of his pipe, glancing over at his desk he said
“ Yes we are now to have a defensive alliance with Incognitia, and ummm while you are in the United Kingdom find out if they have any of those new hops huh”.
Angermanland
09-10-2007, 11:08
Antony the fourth, Prince of Angermanland, sat at the head of his council table.

more accurately, he sat at his desk on the slightly raised dais while his council sat at a curved table that was far enough away that they could all see him and anyone called before them to speak, but not so far that they had to raise their voices to be heard in the normal course of events.

it had the added benefit of placing all his councilors an equal distance away from him, near enough. wouldn't do to show unnecessary favoritism, after all.

"well then gentlemen, what is the situation thus far?" he lent forward slightly, resting his elbows on the desk and steepling his fingers under his chin "Alpha, what have you to report regarding our neighbors... and those father afield?"

"Highness,"the man who stood to respond was of middling height and would be of utterly nondescript appearance, were it not for the patch he wore over his missing left eye. Alpha Salison was the prince's spy master, and one of only four members of his council not elected to the legislature by the general populous. the other three were the grand generals of the army. the spymaster made his way to the middle of the circle and began his briefing, "Incognitia and Stoklomolvi have both proposed alliance with Rechburg. we do not yet know how Rechburg will respond, but we do know that the Incognitians will take it badly if they join with Stoklomolvi. combined with the nature of the fleets and armies of those two nations, it seems doubtful that the Duke will go against Incognitia's wishes, unless he feels safe enough due to his lack of coastline. even then it is unlikely that he'll side with Stoklomolvi. they simply have no capacity to aid him.

to the south, Barkozy hasn't really changed since the last council meeting, however your highness's plans have begun to be put into effect. their should be rebellion there before too long. a mix of communists, royalists, and other assorted malcontents. like as not they'll fight amongst each other as much as against the government there, but our agents will give them enough assistance to ensure that they do so with armies, not random pub brawls. weapons have been acquired from various sources and are ready for distribution. there's even a couple of cannon in there, which should have some interesting effects. we'll hand them over to the rebels as soon as they get it together enough to actually be able to use them. " he checked his papers before continuing "oh, and it seems the United Kingdom have recently acquired some rifles." after checking through the papers once more, he looked up again "that's all, your highness."

"very good." the prince made a slight gesture of dismissal, and Salison took his seat once more, "well then. Richard?"

"highness." Richard Norton was the Minister of Welfare, a catch all title that covered all sorts of things and which basically amounted to keeping the population as productive as possible in as many respects as possible, was a graying and rather portly man acknowledged the prince's request, before taking his place in front of the council, "expansion to the west goes well. as you know, for several years now our population has been straining the available resources of this area. so, we sent colonists over the mountains in the west to settle there." the councilors nodded "well, I'm pleased to report that it seems to be working satisfactorily. reduced population density combined with a greater inflow of food crops combined with customs duties, tarifs, and subsidies mean that, generally speaking, food is cheaper, more of the money is staying within our borders, and the larger cities sanitation issues have been reduced."

this was met with polite applause and a few grins. the prince also smiled "this is good news, Richard. let us hope your success continues. and the army?"

a look was exchanged between three men, Feild Marshals Barret, Beaumont, and Michaelson, before Beaumont, as most senior, stood. "highness, the army is as ready as it can be without being mobilized for war. every battalion, regiment, and battery reports full strength with minimum manpower lost to illness or injury. every brigadier and general reports their men trained to their satisfaction. if necessary a corps could be ready to march within a month. probably less. some of the individual brigades could be sent out within a week."

"good, good. any issues i should hear about? ideas, concerns, legislation i need to review?" a series of generally negative responses later, the Prince dismissed the council and headed for his rooms.

thoughts ran through his head as he walked 'if we destabilize Barkozy, we can intervene in the resulting conflict, annex the border lands and set up the rest of it as a vassal, shoring up that border and bolstering our strength in the long term. between that and our alliance with Incognitia, our western expansion should go unopposed, and a potentially dangerious entity is removed. then we can focus on the east. yes, that should work. then if we...' his thoughts were rudely interrupted by something warm and pleasant impeding his forward motion. " ahh, Rosalyn. how are you my dear?" the prince grinned and returned his wife's embrace.

"i'm well, love, though you could do to pay more attention to your surroundings. how did your meeting go?"

"success on all fronts, a few interesting developments, but nothing to worry about. aside from plotting as i walked, i was actually on my way to see you. it is a lovely day today, shall we go riding?"

"ahh, Antony, you need to ask?"

the prince grinned "i suppose not. were you not a woman and my wife, i suspect you would have ended up in the cavalry." he paused then gave her a sidelong glance "in fact, i don't think something so simple as your gender would have stopped you, somehow."

Rosalyn grinned impishly "you might be right at that, my love."
Terror Incognitia
09-10-2007, 15:14
Having committed ourselves to defending Rechburg from all external assaults, there are three potential causes which could bring the agreement into effect.
First is Kronstadtia. While Rechburg should be entirely capable of defending against an assault from this direction, we will be able to assist with ease, sweeping aside the Kronstadtian 'Navy' to land a substantial force. This raises no further concerns.
Secondly Maldoria. Our anticipation is that a fight between these two would be quite finely balanced, so our intervention could be crucial.
Again, our fleet should have no difficulty whatsoever in getting the army to a landing. The main strategic dilemma is whether to strike directly to link up with Rechburg, or to support them by opening an entirely separate front. This would likely depend on the strategic situation at the time, and will not be further examined here.
The third, most worrying possibility, involves a strike from the United Kingdom.
The idea of an amphibious assault on the United Kingdom is problematical, since our respective naval forces are finely balanced, and no assurance of victory can be given in a battle in UK waters.
However we must be capable of acting on our promise to aid Rechburg, or they have gained nothing by picking our proposal over that of Stoklomolvi. Therefore two choices remain, to cut a deal with Maldorians, or with Kronstadtia. Again, to make a specific recommendation is beyond the scope of this report.

The Tyrant placed the report down on his desk, and looked around at his council.
"I believe, gentlemen, that with mutterings of war from the United Kingdom, this issue has taken on a new urgency. We must have a solution, and swiftly."
"Might I suggest, sir" Admiral Bailey spoke up "That we send a diplomatic representation to Kronstadtia. Send them in a small flotilla...say three Ships of the Line, with appropriate escorts. And that once there, they politely request a treaty permitting military access for Incognitian troops marching to Rechburg."
"What incentive, besides the implied threat of more firepower than their entire fleet, do they have to agree?"
"That's a very good question general. If the access treaty specifies that Kronstadtia remains neutral, and we sign a mutual defence pact to guarantee their neutrality...we dig them out of the hole we persuaded them to jump in Add in a few sweeteners, as long as they're cheap...things like advisors and trainers for their infantry, that sort of thing. Right, that seems satisfactory. Now I want your recommendations for the members of this legation."

It took a couple of days to sort all the preparations, but then three Ships of the Line, the Defiance, Resolution and Swiftsure departed from Menzerte for Kronstadtia, with attending frigates. They carried John Menzies, a career diplomat who had served as ambassador to Kronstadtia at one stage. He carried this message:
To the Duke
We have committed ourselves to defending Rechburg against any foreign aggression. This raises the obvious problem that we cannot reach Rechburg directly. Our hope is that you will agree that, in the event of Rechburg being invaded you will permit our troops to pass through your territory.
We will of course guarantee your neutrality in that situation, and are prepared to sign a mutual defence pact in case someone decides not to respect your neutrality. In addition we can offer certain military supplies, some training assistance and perhaps joint training exercises for your troops, and the like.
Of course, if we cannot find a way to fulfil our commitments to our ally, in case of war we might be forced to take any measures necessary to uphold our honour and the spirit of the treaties we are signatory to.
Regards, The Tyrant.
Rechburg

All the lanterns seemed to be ablaze in the offices of the Foreign Affairs, it almost seemed as if it were a signal to the residents of Ratisbon, great affairs were a foot.
A coach pulled in off Celtonia Avenue into the long driveway, along its full-length tall popular trees bordered the driveway, it twistered and turned up to the rather grand entrance to the Foreign Affairs building.
As the coach slowly crawled to a halt a footman rushed to the coach’s door, opening so as to allow the First Minister to ease his way out.
Pausing briefly to study the night sky, he shivered in the early brisk spring evening, pulling his fur-collared coat tighter around him as he walked smartly into what he considered his kingdom.
Though the First minister was a diminutive man, his energy and enthusiasm for his life’s path gave him the aura of a giant of a man. Smartly he pushed his way past the footman, the ceremonial guards into the grand foyer. Turning to his right he almost skipped up the stairs taking two at a time, on reaching the top he paused, looked down into the foyer where his staff were still deciding on whether to race after him or hide. When the Fist Minister raced anywhere, it was a sign of urgency and that usually meant they would all bear the brunt of his demands.
“Get me Mueller and Hyde, and get them here now” he shouted then disappeared into his office at the top of the stairs.
His office reflected the man, it was untidy and rather small considering the importance of the man, running along the wall the length of the office were rows of folders, each carefully labeled, each a record of national and international importance. Montgelas left nothing to chance or memory, every piece of information, be it rumours or fact was here in this room, in these files.
At the far end of the room a small fire burnt slowly in the fireplace, its glow sending reddish shadows flickering over that end of the room.
Montgelas quickly removed his coat, carelessly attempting to hang it on the coat hanger, but failing and it just lay on the floor, beneath the coat stand. He made his way over to the desk where he worked, a large desk, which in contrast to the man was tidy with everything in its place, including several small dossiers.
He carefully picked up the dossier with the messages that arrived while he was away. He read them as he slowly made his way towards the warmth of the fire, slowly still reading he eased himself into his brown well-worn lounge chair.
Still reading, he slowly eased himself into his lounger, as he did so the door opened and a rather smart and tidy gentleman slowly made his way in. Noticing the coat on the floor, he sighed picked it up and correctly hung it on the coat hanger, then he turned to face the minister.
“Minister, Mr. Mueller and Mr. Hyde are here”, he stepped back to allow to young men into the room.
Karl Mueller was a 32-year-old career diplomat; he was very tall and rakishly handsome. Rumours abounded around Ratisbon about his romantic and rather bawdy adventures, rumour he was always denying but they kept following him and his career.
Montgelas rather liked Mueller, he was the opposite of himself, and he assumed that is why he liked him.
The other man, Stephan Hyde, was 45 years old, the son of a retired army general, he gave the appearance of a guards officer, however he had neither held a sword or musket, nor did he have a desire to do so.
To Montgelas Stephan Hyde was a mystery, he knew all about the man, but he still didn’t know what made him tick. What he did know about Stephan Hyde was he got results, and he was ruthless in achieving them.

Montgelas rose waved the men towards him “gentleman come in, please take a seat”.
The two men made their way to the chairs opposite the minister.
“Well gentleman, the game is afoot,” he rather quietly declared.
In an hour or two I am leaving for the United Kingdom, and you Karl are going to Maldoria and you Stephan are going to Kronstadtia.
“What we require gentleman is a mutual defence pact and military access rights, what we ask is what we offer them in return, its that simple.”
“I will try and come to some agreement with the United Kingdom, I would send you Karl except I fear the King would lynch you after your rather clumsy affairs there on your last duty at the embassy.”
Montgelas slowly made his way to the fire, pausing to pick up a poker
“Gentleman, I fear that the United Kingdom maybe flexing its muscles, when a country does that there is often a case of accidental wars, if that happens I don’t want the victim of that accident to be Rechburg”.
He bent down and poked the fire, picking up several pieces of wood from the box to the side of the fireplace he carefully placed them into the flames.
“You gentlemen will make Kronstadtia and Maldoria aware of the situation. Its important you get them to understand we don’t want a war, and if it doesn’t happen to Rechburg it is likely to be one of them.”
Montgelas made his way back to his chair; he eased himself back into the chair, looking rather pleased at the fire.
“ What we require gentlemen is an agreement that if one of us is attacked the other or others will come to their aid.
We have an undertaking and an agreement from Incognitia that they will assist us, so we need to get an agreement that allows Incognitia to land troops. Troops that may then make their way to join us or perhaps to help us defend them”.
Stephan Hyde interrupted, as he was rather apt to do:
“What about Fordock, Minister”?
“Fordock is not a direct threat to us, nor are we to them, we do know however that the United Kingdom has approached them for an Alliance, I will be visiting the Fordockian embassy before I leave. I will be seeking an understanding from them, perhaps through the efforts of the Kronstadtia we can offer them a defence pact as well”.
Turning towards Stephan Hyde
“Perhaps you could raise that issue with the Kronstadians, Stephan”.
“ I certainly will minister”

Montgelas once again rose from his chair.
“Well gentlemen you have your instructions, please do your duty, oh and one more thing. While you are away should you hear of the new grain of hops that is being grown in Stoklomolvi, please learn all you can. As you know the Duke is rather keen on his beer and he has discovered a taste for this new beer”.

The two men rose, shook hands with the minister and made their way out of his office.
Montgelas, slowly sank back to his chair, leaned over to the table beside him, and picked up a bell and rang it.
His secretary came in.
“Hans, please send a messenger to the Fordock embassy, ask them for a urgent appointment this evening.”
“Yes minister, immediately.” The secretary declared.
Montgelas waved him out of the room, sighed and looked rather wistfully and the flames I the fire
“God don’t let there be a war again” he whispered to the flames.

Of course, if we cannot find a way to fulfil our commitments to our ally, in case of war we might be forced to take any measures necessary to uphold our honour and the spirit of the treaties we are signatory to.
Regards, The Tyrant.

Secretary ended reading, bowed deep and exited the room.

The Noble Council sat silent for a second, after which the old, bearded and (as usually) slightly drunk Baron of Krowschky stood up. His holdings were located to the easternmost corner of Kronstadtia, and were thereby the ones most likely to be affected by the proposal.
"I say no. No foreign troops in our soil, say I! That is what I say."

His cousin, young Count of Diebrewky stood up as the Baron sat, and nodded. "So say I too. We need no outsiders, their treaties don't affect us. We should not take soldiers into our lands without our soldiers killing them when they do!"

Grand Duke sighed. These two were known for their simplicity, but they were amongst the highest lords of his country, and their voices were rather important. He remained silent for the time being, willing to know what the others would say, even though he knew who was going to speak next:

"I say yes! Let the foreigners fight eachother, if they so wish. We will only get uselessly into the harms way by fighting them when we don't need to, like some here seem to be willing to do, just for their own blood-thirst!"
The speaker was Count of Pragew, a man more known for his greed and wealth than patriotism. He was also the leading figure of the Western Clicque, and a known enemy of the old Baron who somewhat dominated the East.

Baron, his cousin and half a dozen of other stood now up in anger, and shouted something about how the "Pragewian merchant" just wanted to make money by supplying the armies marching through the Eastern lands, but it was mainly lost into the growing murmur and yells that begun to be thrown all around the room.

It lasted for almost half an hour, before the Grand Duke stood up. He had made his mind, for reasons of his own, but decided to give his silly vassals one they could not argue with even though it had little to do with what he really thought.

"Silence! This tyrant shall not march through our lands, for he insults Me, My Noble's Honour and our country as a whole."

The room went silent, and the mighty men in it made glances at each other, clearly rather confused.

"Didn't you hear what he said in the letter?"

A waiting silence.

"TO THE DUKE! Not Grand Duke of The Grand Duchy of Kronstadtia! A man like this, a man who doesn't think we, with our history of thousand years and all the glory we hold, are not more than a simple little dukedom, shall NEVER have his men marching through these lands!"

The nobles, with the exception of few he knew the Grand Duke better, jumped all up and cheered.

The following was then quickly written by the secretary, and sent to the waiting Incognitian fleet:

"Your soldiers are not permitted on Kronstadtian soil. One should not make treaties or pacts he is unable to keep.

Grand Duke of Kronstadtia"

King Elijah Stuyonovich was sitting on his throne, playing with his pen. He then stood up and addressed his ministers, who were standing in two orderly

lines facing towards each other across a long red rug that was layed out on the floor.

"Gentlemen. The Duchy of Rechburg has declared our mutual offensive and protection pact to be null and void. Henceforth, our two nations shall have no

connections with each other. However, due to our similar ideals, I have proposed an alliance between Angermanland, Barkozy, and Stoklomolvi. The

Alliance, if successful, shall be named the Triple Alliance."

The other ministers murmured to each other, and then fell silent. Then, the Minister of War started clapping, and everyone else began to do so as well.

The king walked around his desk and through the double line of ministers. He then exited the room. The ministers soon dispersed as well.

Soon, Stephen Yeltsin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the king began to discuss the political atmosphere of the world.

"Sire, if we offer Barkozy and Angermanland our great beer, wine, and foodstuffs then they will surely join forces with us. Our beer, sire, has been

proclaimed some of the best beer in Gondwana! Our wine has been stored for decades, if not many an annum! Our bread is some of the finest in the region, and none of our peasants are forced to eat cake*!"

"Yes, yes, but considering how Rechburg opposed us, it may be that Angermanland and Barkozy will decide to band against us, or even the entire

continent. We will send an ambassador to each country, but don't guarantee anything."

"Yes, m'lord."

The minister walked out of the room, and soon after two ambassadors arrived.

"Greetings, sire. I am Brother Wembley, and this is-"

"Friar Grigori, at your service, my liege."

"Ambassadors, I need you to go to Barkozy and Angermanland to propose the Triple Alliance. Offer them the gift of our fine beer, wine, and breads to them, and surely they will accept, I hope."

Elijah hands them two sheets of paper, with one addressed to Barkozy while the other was addressed to Angermanland. He pulled out a stamp and officialised both documents.

"Now, it is settled. Go deliver the message, immediately!"

"Yes, my liege," both said. They then walked out of the room.

The waters lapped against the docks. The gulls cried in the air as the sky acquired a yellowish tinge. There was a salty smell in the air. As the waves played amongst the docks, fingers taping them constantly. On a bluff above the main city sat the Acropolis. It was small and there were few who inhabited it but its white marble shined above the rest of the docks and the poor of the city. It was the corridors of power. Here the officials lived and did business. Here right now the elements of backstabbing and maneuvering for influence were going on.

There were many people there. Dominating the conversation though was Hfn Yunt. He had been questioned forth by President Yolst and was in the spotlight.

"Would you agree that out population has been expanding"
"Yes but-"
"Thank you. Would you also agree that there is open terriotory"
"Well there is b-"
"Yes or No?"
"Yes Sir."
"Very Good. Now would this territory not give us an advantage?"
Hfn Yunt has given up by this point and with an exasperated sigh said "Yes sir."
"Wonderfull. Thank you for your testimony Hfn Yunt."

The men sat down. Yolst brought the meeting to order. "Friends we are here to decide on 2 particular issues. The First one you are all aware of but it is too sensitive to discuss here. The Second one is the main purpose of this meeting. Across the Channel of the Merchant Prince (Kings' Channel) lies for the most part unclaimed land. We can benefit from this land and we will. I am proposing a military invasion and establishment of a small colony to enlighten the population and grant us control of entry to the canal. "We now require a vote. I give you 15 minutes to deliberate amongst your selfs."

When the time was up it was voted forward. Yolst continued "Now the question is how to proceed."

a knock on the door disturbed the prince from his contemplation of various reports. "enter!"

in response the prince's secretary put his head around the door "your highness, the ambassador from Stoklomolvi is here."

"very good. show him in." the Prince sat behind his desk in his office. the desk was imposingly large, mostly by necessity, and the walls were covered in shelves full of books and rolled up maps. anyone who looked at the shelves carefully would notice that only about two in three of the books there were records and manuals and the like. the prince was a great patron of authors and playwrights, and their latest works, as well as some of his favourites, were also to be found on his shelves.

he closed a ledger as the man entered, but did not bother to stand, instead adopting a relaxed position in what had to be the most comfortable chair, at least to his mind, in the entire principality at the very least. (truthfully, it was a good thing this was so, as he sometimes sat in it for hours at a time when things got busy)

"so, you have something to tell me? please, have a seat." he indicated one of the chairs on the other side of his desk, and once the man had sat down, continued "so, what has Stoklomolvi to say to me, humm?" he quirked an eyebrow.

Duke Leopold stood looking at the map of Laurentia, contemplating the havoc that war would bring to this continent.
Beside him son and heir Prince Joseph watched his father, then glancing across the table he studied his uncle Prince Wrede commander of the Rechburg army, a gnarly experienced veteran of many wars.

Duke Leopold was the first to speak “ Well the good thing is that Incognitia doesn’t need to station troops in Rechburg to assist in our defence, our treaty clearly states that they will invade an aggressor, so in that respect it may be to our advantage”
“How so” enquired Joseph as he picked up a small pin with a Rechburg flag on it.
“An aggressor against Rechburg, has a coast, that makes it vulnerable to a Incognitian invasion. So clearly they will need to maintain a substantial reserve to meet this threat; that will greatly assist us in our defence of Rechburg. Possibly even allow us to counter attack and punch through to meet them.”

Prince Wrede holding his order of Battle of Rechburg said “ We have 4 Corps of troops ready to meet any attack, all of then battle tested veterans. We have the National Guard, admittedly not the toughest troops but good solid and loyal men of Rechburg. Anyone who attacks us sire, is going to wander back home with vital parts of their anatomy left in the soil of Rechburg”.

Leopold walking from the map to the window, turned quickly
“Well we have heard from Kronstadtia, they will not allow Incognitia to land, at least we know where they stand We still haven’t heard from Maldoria so we are not sure what to expect from there”.

Prince Joseph placed the pin back on the map, deciding to play the devils advocate, he said
“Father do we even know if the United Kingdom will attack, might it not be that they are merely bored and flexing muscles. In fact if they do want war they may attack else where”.
“For sure Joseph it is all uncertainty, however in uncertainty reigns confusion and I will not be confused.
Once Montgelas returns from the United Kingdom we will have a clearer understanding”

Prince Wrede quietly placing his order of battle on the table, walked to the window to share the view with his nephew and sovereign
“So what do we do in meantime sire”.
“Do” replied Leopold we have much to do move up the 1st Brigade of the national guard to the border with the United Kingdom, they will be our screen, move the 2nd Brigade to Ansbach, they can quickly reinforce the 1st Brigade.
Ummm, 1st Corps and the Guard will remain here for now 2nd, 3rd and 4th Corps will be in a state of readiness.”

“Father surely moving the National Guard up is going to make this situation worse” enquired Joseph.
“No, everyone knows our national guard do not serve outside Rechburg borders, it is clear this is merely a precautionary move in the absence of any certainty.”
Joseph pushed the point a bit more
“ Yes I understand that, but you have just placed a division of the National Guard within a days march of the border father, is that wise”.
Prince Wrede moved over to Joseph, looked at the map he then looked up at his young nephew and protégé and said
“Wise and prudent”.

The United Kingdom always fascinated Montgelas, St Myhre the kingdoms capital intrigued him none the less than the rest of the country.
Obviously the city was productive, the slums at least were away from the central part of St Myhre, and the people were very civil and on the whole seemed quite happy.
On his journey to the capital, Montgelas have noticed a disturbing amount of Military activity, which brought him back to his reason for this journey.
Could he get an assurance from the King, or in truth the Queen that this activity was not a prelude to war, or at least a war with Rechburg?
Ideally Montgelas wanted a mutual defence treaty, whether he got that only time would tell.
As he looked out the widow he saw the familiar walls of the palace.

"So, it seems Kronstadtia refuses us. Well, we will leave any further diplomacy in Laurentia to our friends in Rechburg. The question before us is what action we take in response to Kronstadtia's defiance."
"We should declare war immediately, go in and raze their capital, see how they like that!"
"Thank you, General, I know you've never taken insults to our nation's honour lightly. Admiral, any thoughts?"
"I wouldn't advise anything quite so drastic, at least to start with. I would strongly suggest...trading consequences though."
"An embargo? A blockade?"
"A blockade of their entire Inner Sea coast, I would advise."
"How much of a commitment would that be?"
"They only have a few harbours worthy of the name, so only a few ships of the line, with their associated frigates. Possibly a whole squadron, even."
"Ok, gentlemen give me a damage assessment. Reaction of other powers, and likely cost if we have to enforce the blockade."
The Admiral answered first.
"Cost of opposition will be minimal. I'd be surprised if we lost more than a frigate. Their navy is virtually non-existent."
"Very well. Mr. Mokyr, foreign damage assessment."
Mr. James Mokyr, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, considered his answer before speaking.
"Well sir, I believe the damage should be minimal; we must balance appearing aggressive, against the loss of face in backing down. In addition we are by no means the only power to be...how to put this...exerting our muscle. While we couldn't really justify invasion, an embargo we can get away with. The only question is the pretext."
"Thank you Mr. Mokyr. I actually had the Attorney General, Lord Silverwright, look into it for me. It turns out that there is a statute on the books, the Navigation Laws, in which we lay claim to controlling all trade in the Inner Seas. It was successfully enforced for perhaps five years three centuries ago, but no matter. Under one of it's provisions, we can charge a tariff on any vessel for the prevention of piracy. The level of the tariff, given the changes in currency since, is uncertain, and thus at our discretion. The refusal to pay permits us to exact it. Thus a legal basis for the blockade. So, anyone wish to speak against?"
"I still think we should invade!"
"Denied. Anyone else?"
Heads shook around the table.

So it was that Defiance, Resolution and Swiftsure remained on station off Kronstadtia, and were joined by their sister Implacable, and increased the number of frigates present to twelve. They began issuing the notices required by the ancient Act of Piracy and Passage immediately. The blockade would begin in exactly seven days, of all major trading ports in Kronstadtia.

OOC: Could do with information on what your major ports are called, and roughly where they're located, to plan out the blockade.

As the agitators from Angermanland went from town to town it was difficult to draw crowds for rousing speeches denouncing the Barkozian government. After all, most people had received free land, courtesy of the now-exiled feudal lords and hadn't much to complain about other than minor qualms about duties. Any concerns about duties were held more by merchants than by farmers and such, however, as the lowly people rarely crossed territorial boundaries.

If it was difficult to get traction in the countryside, it was much more difficult to get traction with fringe groups such as communists and royalists, as such a broad, open message caused intense suspicion. For communists, it seemed like a foreign agent attempting to restore an even worse order than capitalism, and for the royalists, it was just one group of rabble-rousers being replaced by another. This isn't to say that they aren't available, but that they aren't available together. Angermanland, of course, could intervene to attempt to restore the monarchy or could intervene itself to topple the Barkozian government, but neither group really had enough people to do much but form a puppet government.

The government did nothing. The Chief of Navy, to whom the responsibility of running spy rings was given, knew better than to give anyone anything to talk about. With any luck, the agitators would discredit themselves by courting royalists abroad without any interruption.

As for the Stoklomolvi offer of alliance, there was a quick response, sent by messenger.

To the Stoklomolvi foreign ministry,

We are currently unwilling to engage in entangling alliances, especially an alliance with a power like Angermanland. We are quite interested in pursuing diplomatic relations further, as negotiation with a nation devoted to the cause of liberty would be deemed in our best interests. Remember, however, that we are not really willing to engage in military ventures at this point. It is to your advantage to understand that our help will be economic, rather than military in any potential relationship.

The Guards at the palace's gates were from the Royal Hampshire Guards, the best of the best. They worn back jackets instead of red like the rest of the army, with gold buttons. The collars where high and had gold emblems sown in. The were one of three regiments that dawned the bear skin caps. The other two being the Royal St. Myhre Guards, and Royal Norfolk Guards. The men had clean shaven faces, and yet still looked dirty some how. A hint to anyone these men were the kind you don't mess with.

One of the guards looked at Montgelas papers and with a grunt and a nodded approval 3 guards appeared behind the gate and opened the iron gate. Montgelas was told to follow the three guards. He was led up the front drive to the front doors, where even more guards stood at rigid attention. The front doors were unlocked and Montgelas urged through. He was then led with 6 of his new friends to the meeting room. Around every corner a massive black soldier stood still. The great oak doors to the room took two men to push them open.

And there sat the king in a large chair on top of few stairs, the Queen to his right and one of this closest advisors to his left slightly behind, General Beckett.

The guards impressed Montgelas as well as the pomp and ceremony, far removed from his Dukes court where functionality ruled over ceremony, Montgelas guessed the pomp reflected the Queen’s influence.

Stepping up to the throne he bowed with the greatest grace he could manage, looking at the King he said
“ Sire I bring you greetings from my Duke, he has asked me to inform you of his deepest respect and admiration of both your self and Queen Victoria”.

Montgelas watched the trio gathered around the throne carefully, he continued
“ I have been asked to inform you the Duke is greatly disturbed by the reports and rumors of your military preparations, he further asked me to tell you that he has long cherished and valued the friendship and peace as well as the deep harmony that has existed between our two nations”
Shifting his feet casually he said
‘The Duke has been greatly disturbed by other nations who are also arming and preparing for war, in particular the deepening diplomatic row between Kronstadtia and Incognitia. The Duke has required me to ask that you cement the good relations between our nations by joining him in a mutual defence pact.
Such a pact would surely send a message to other nations that the two powerful nations of the United Kingdom and Rechburg were prepared to jointly go to war with any aggressor against any nation that would threaten either nation.”

He then glanced to the Queen and General Beckitt, I wonder what the relationship is between those two, hmmmm I think I can detect some slight hostility between them.
“Finally Sire my Duke has asked me to inform you that in self preservation for his peaceful nation he has ordered 2 brigades of national guard to move closer to the border, as General Beckett knows our national guard are only ever deployed within Richburg’s natural borders, this is a smallest response that my Duke has ordered, thus he is demonstrating his defensive and peaceful intentions. Further more we have received assurances from our great ally Incognitia that they will support us in any war against a nation that threaten Recburg. So finally your majesty I reiterate that the greatest desire of my Duke is that you join him in a defence pact that will cement and continue the very friendly relations between our two nations.”

Having declared his opening gambit, Montgelas awaited their response

The King listened to what the man had to say, but waited till the Queen had finished thinking. She whispered in his ear.

"We should take him up on it, but try and push for an offensive pact, ally with them for a war. Defence," She laughed, " they are surrounded by allies if we aggree, and no one will get to them, it will be us who are attacked first, and how can we make sure they come to aid us?"

The King scratched his chin, then looked at the minister. "How do we know you will come to our aid in a time of need?"

The General rolled his eyes. Bloody fool, your such a push over he thought to himself. He bent down and whispered into his other ear. "Make them give us troops. Make them lend them to us on good will and assurance. They can even send a General over, but he will be commanded by one of our own and placed under Lord Harker's army."

King Fredrick looked up at him with a grin, "Good thinking General Beckett." He faced the visitor. "Lend us a Brigade of 3000–5000 men, and you shall have yourself defensive ally."

Grand Duke hadn't slept for two whole nights, and the whole court was in a great state of excitement, trying to almost desperately gain information about His Highness' situation and thoughts. Rumors were numerous, yet few of them sounded believable. Mostly they were right in one thing though - Grand Duke's odd behaviour had something to do with the Council meeting and the desicion about Incognitian proposal.

Finally things became clear, when in the morning of the third day three news sprung around the palace's halls and corridors as well as the capitol's streets:

1. Incognitians had sunk a small Kronstadtian merchant ship when it had refused to stop and pay them.

2. Gunpowder factories were hiring more employees, increasing their production and receiving more governmental funding.

3. Grand Duke's personal forces were mobilized and training, nobility's own guard troops were mobilized and training, and governmental supply magazines all around the country were being filled again.

Grand Duke's "High Messengers", men who had the right to speak with Grand Duke's own voice and be treated and obeyed like he would, were also on the move, riding wildly around the country, delivering the higher nobility a message unknown to the commoners.

All along the coast, fortifications were being repaired and reinforced again. All three major ports, those of Ladzl (in the bay close to Fordockian border), Danzr (in the Southernmost end of the small cape north from the big island) and Petawsk (in the tip of the tiny cape close to Fordock border) (were also on high state of alertness, and several additional regiments were sent to their direction from the inland to reinforce their garrisons.

Montgelas paused, deliberately taking his time to digest this new proposal.
He thought to himself “Why the hell do they want a Brigade, they have an excellent army and are not directly being threatened by any one. It can only be a test, to determine our resolve”.

“Sire I am sure my Duke would agree to lending you a Brigade of troops, however it would be conditional on the type of agreement. For example if you were to allow our Ally Incognitia berthing rights then we would willingly lend you a Brigade of troops free of charge except for provisions.
As you are aware normally our Government hires units out to certain Governments friendly towards Rechburg (see factbook for mercenary units). On the other hand for Allies we would be only to pleased to offer you a Brigade free of charge”.

“The Brigade would remain under command of our Brigade general, and in regard to deployment he would maintain the right of veto for extenuating circumstances, for example if your were to attack some other nation; we would not allow our units to become involved in a war against a government friendly to Rechburg. Other than that our Brigade would operate under the strategic command of your forces. It could be used if you attacked some other party while our Brigade remained behind as a defensive force.
We would however assist the United Kingdom totally if they were attacked by a third party, regardless of who attacked you, not only by the Brigade stationed in the United Kingdom but by other forces from Rechburg as well.”

He paused, looking to the Queen, thinking to himself he was watching a very dangerous woman.
“However if you want a total offensive-defensive alliance Rechburg would likely look at that favorably, but as a full partner, further more I would be required to ratify such an agreement with my Duke”.

Then thinking to himself, I best clarify the details.
“So here are our proposals sire, we will
(a) we will hire out to you 1 Brigade of Infantry at a nominal fee – likely 5000 Ducats per month.
(b) If you agree to offer our Ally Incognitia berthing and provisioning rights we will loan you the brigade free of charge, you provide provisions for our brigade and sell provisions to the Incognitian fleet.
(c) The Brigade remains under tactical command of our brigade general, who has a right of veto for deployment, while under your strategic command.
(d) We would consider a full offensive-defensive alliance, but the conditions to remain confidential and they will require ratification.

He then looked smiled and waited.

Both the Queen and General Beckett cursed softly at the mention of a veto. The King was unchanged, his expression on his face didn't falter, but continued to stare down at Montgelas, the Guards beside the minister knew the King's short temper was rising, he would keep it bottled up for a while then explode, the problem being it could be on anyone at anytime and that scared these battle hardened men of the Royal Highlander Hampshire Guards. The thought of the United Kingdom offering berthing rights to its incredible port facilities for other then trade was unbearable to some. Let's just say they wouldn't be greeted nicely upon arrival.

All three were disturbed by the fact one nation would sell it's forces, and to the United Kingdom who was in no need or requirement for them. The idea of having a brigade under Delesian command is to ensure unflagging loyalty and truth to one's word.

"I am quite sure mister Montgelas that you represent Rechburg and it's Duke, meanwhile not Terror Incognitia. If what you truly request is that of which you just offered, then we shall need to gather the three leaders of our nations and work out a proper, no loose ends treaty. I propose a meeting at one of my summer estates in North Hampton, close to all three of our borders. I will not nail down terms to none other then the highest men, I do beg your pardon I mean no disrespect but when securing my nation's future one must understand no?"

Montgelas watched the trio carefully; he considered what had been suggested and wondered why they were delaying; however years of experience in diplomacy warned Montgelas to be patient. If these people really wanted a defence treaty, what better treaty could they have than one having Rechburg securing part of the United Kingdoms southern borders while Incognitia could help secure both its sea borne trade as well as its coasts.
All we have asked in return is that they join us in a treaty that helps secure them and us in a volatile world.

“Oh well softly goes it,” Montgelas thought to himself.

He once again shuffled quietly from one foot to the next
“Sire I know I can speak on behalf of my Duke when I willingly accept the invitation to a meeting with your highness’s, however in regard to Incognitia I am not authorized to speak on behalf of Incognitia. I am sure my Duke will send messengers to the Incognitians to determine whether they wish to join us in this summit.”
Pausing to take a breath he continued,
“It may eventuate that the Incognitians do not desire a treaty with the United Kingdom, as I said I am speaking only on behalf of my Duke, In the event the Incognitians do not want to join us I am can assure you Sire that Rechburg will continue to seek a defence treaty with your Government”.

So far the blockade was going well. Commodore Henry Jameson, commander of the newly formed Northern Coast Squadron, had split his forces between Danzr and Petawski. Any operations against Ladzl were put on hold to await further instruction from the Admiralty. (OOC: From your descriptions I understand Ladzl to be on the Western coast, outside the Inner Sea entirely. Is this correct?)

It was unfortunate that a merchant vessel had been sunk; they were going to board it, but it simply refused to halt even after warning shots were fired.
He was hoping that, in future, they wouldn't have to sink any more vessels, with that example set.

There had been no sign of even Kronstadtia's small navy, but he would not complain at that just yet; his crews hadn't had much real practice, rather than merely drills, for a while and so were still working up to full slick efficiency.

Meanwhile his men were laughing as they saw fortifications being repaired...they had no intention to land after all.

The Queen stepped down from her seat and walked out the room through a door on the side, the General remained at his position. "Oh and before I forget, your Duke is allowed a single regiment for protectional, but I can assure you, the Highway men in the United Kingdom have long since fled since the introduction of the Lancer and Hussar patrols. Back in the Rechburg Embassy Montgelas finished writing messages that were sent both by courier and Pigeon to Rechburg. He also sent a message to the Incognitian Embassy also in St Myhre.

From First Minister Duchy of Rechburg
To the Ambassador of Terror Incognitia – United Kingdom
Sir,
Please pass on my compliments to the Tyrant of Terror Incognitia.
Please inform him that negotiations have been opened in regard to a mutual defence treaty between Rechburg and the United Kingdom, the conference will take place at the Kings summer residence in North Hampton.
And I on behalf of the Duke Of Rechburg would invite the Tyrant of Terror Incognitia to come and conclude a treaty with the United Kingdom on its own behalf. I am sure the King of the United Kingdom will already have sent a similar invitation to Terror Incognitia.

From First Minister Montgelas to the Duke Of Rechburg
Sire
The King of the United Kingdom has invited you to a summit to ratify a mutual defence treaty with his nation. I believe that this is a golden opportunity to secure our northern border region, prior to the outbreak of hostilities on Laurentia.
The Tyrant of Terror Incognitia has also been invited to discuss a defence treaty with the United Kingdom.
I believe this meeting will have benefit to all three parties as rumors are surfacing of war on Laurentia, it is quickly becoming a situation similar to that child’s party game musical chairs, the nation without reliable allies becomes vulnerable.
It becomes clear to me that should the United Kingdom delay or pursue unsatisfactory demands it will become the child without a chair.
I am at this instant preparing to return to Rechburg and will join you on your journey to North Hampton
should you decide to go.
It has been suggested that 1 regiment will suffice as a escort and I see no reason to suspect treachery or the possibility of attack against us while a guest of their Majesties.

With The Tyrant's compliments to the Honourable First Minister of Rechburg.
The Tyrant will gladly attend this summit, not least to get a feel for the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, whom he has not yet had the pleasure of meeting.
While he assumes there will be a sensible limit on the escort permitted by our hosts, he sees no need to bring more than a handful of Marines, as he will trust to the competence and honour of the United Kingdom's soldiers.

the Stoklomolvi ambassador was quickly sent on his way, his offer refused outright. bread? beer? undisclosed conditions? the wine might have made a suitable gift, but really, what was the Stoklomolvi king Thinking?

another week, another council session. the reports were mostly uninteresting. no major changes. then came two interesting reports. the first, indirectly from the offices of the supervisor of the western colonial plan. while initial expansion had been left to run it's course, the land having been left to the wilds, further expansion in that quarter was impossible, as the settled lands had run up against the holdings of the Frozopian nation. an ambassador was sent to asses their stance on world affairs, with the authority to offer a military alliance of whatever terms seemed most favorable, subject to ratification by the Prince.

then, from spy master Salison, "your highness, i regret to inform you that our plans in the south have failed. our men have returned, and given me the report. for reasons unknown, after initially successful negotiations, all parties simply threw them out. so far as they could tell there had been no interference from the Barkozy authorities. even those men who were purportedly ambitious and readily able to raise the troops... even those few of the old nobility who yet live... every single one simply shut down. we can only theorize that royalist and communist elements got word of the fact that the other was approached, though we cannot quite work out how, and became distrustful of our messengers. however, we cannot account for how this spread, as we had carefully laid out our operations so as not to have them connect with each other or even, so much as possible, Angermanland it's self.

none the less. the operation has failed."

stunned silence as the council waited to see how the prince would take this news. when truly angered, his temper was explosive, and occasionally violent if additional provocation was added, as a few of the more foolish ex-councilors had had opportunity to experience.

"well then. a failure. very well. these things happen" his voice was tense. angry, but still in control, for the moment. it was well that this was the councils last issue for the day, however. even the princess would be hard put to elicit a kind word from this man before he had slept, now. the thought for a moment, then stood and began pacing, while speeking in a sharp, clear tone, of a kind which brooked no argument.

"Beaumont, take three divisions. march south. i will send messengers ahead. you will begin a Campagine against Barkozy. Michaelson, you shall take three divisions and march east. guard the border against incursion and have your southern most division stand ready to assist Beaumont if the situation requires it. Barret, the guard and two other divisions shall be under your command. they are a reserve. deploy them in the south west, ready to assist Beaumont if necessary, or to defend against the Frozopians should they march against us. stay on this side of the border. we do not wish to provoke unnecessary events from that direction."

he stopped, abruptly, turned on the council and shouted "you're dismissed! send in the scribes and messengers. i have diplomacy to conduct" he spat the last few words.

to the tyrant of incognitia

Angermanland marches south against Barkozy.
you are called to Honour the alliance.

Antony IV, Prince of Angermanland

to the king of Stoklomolvi

Angermanland is now in a state of war with Barkozy.
interfere at your own risk.
any such interference in the support of Barkozy beyond normal peace time trade.
any attempts to run any blockades which may be imposed,
shall be considered and act of war against Angermanland

Antony IV, Prince of Angermanland

the final message, though taken by courier to the government of Barkozy also, was distributed as widely through that nation as possible.

to the denizens of Barkozy

some time ago you overthrew your monarchy.
this was accepted, however, as your monarchs were a blot upon the class.
since then, your so called 'government' has shown it's self weak and incompetent in that chief task of governance:
your nation's defence.
this should worry you, and certainly concerns Angermanland.
so, at this time, as it shows no sign of a return to the divine order of being,
nor any ability to preform the tasks required of it effectively,
we now see fit to remove this foul stain from the continent.

as such, Angermanland is now officially in a state of war with the 'government' of Barkozy,
and any government that shall replace them which does not conform to the following:

1: the northern territories, excluding the coastlines, are passed over to Angermanland.

2: that government shall provide adiquite defence agaisnt external threats,
as defined by the Angerman government

3: that government shall be a monarchy
(of any sort, though it is believed the people will be more accepting of a constiutional monarchy
as in Angermanland than the more absolute forms found elsewhere)

4: that government shall at no time act in a manner hostile to the nation of Angermanland.

until such time as these conditions are met,
or your land is conquered and annexed in it's entirity,
this state of war shall exist.

Antony IV, Prince of Angermanland

additionally, the ambassador to Frozopia was tasked with carrying a more.. polite... version of the declaration to the Frozopian government, along with a request for their assistance, or at least neutrality, in the upcoming war.

finally, a message was sent to all other nations on both continents, informing them of this state of affairs and encouraging them, politely, to keep their noses out of other people's business on this issue. this, at least, was more courtesy than anything, as it was unlikely to achieve anything at all.

To: Anthony IV of Angermanland

We of course stand ready to aid you in honour of our ancient friendship and long-established treaty.
We are negotiating for a deal with both Rechburg and the United Kingdom, we will let you know how this progresses.
Rechburg
16-10-2007, 19:02
Two weeks had passed since Montgelas had returned from the United Kingdom; a date had been confirmed for the conference with the rulers of the United Kingdom and Incognitia.
Preparations had been made for the progress to North Hampton, 2 squadrons of the Black Guard Carabineer Regiment were to escort Duke Leopold and Princess Sophia. The remaining squadrons of that famous Regiment remained on House Guard duty back at the Palace in Rechburg capital of Ratisbon. Prince Joseph now assuming temporary control of the Duchy in his father’s absence.

As the Duke made his way to the northern border he spent a day inspecting and talking with the men and officers of the 1st National Guard Division, a unit that had recently been deployed in defensive positions along the northern border with the United Kingdom.
The Royal couple had a dinner with the officers of the Division. The Duke loved informality with his soldiers and men, he was a man gifted with a phenomenal memory; he could place a man or face at a instant. This ability to be familiar and to recognize men, made the respect and admiration that his men held for their sovereign so much more intense.
Duke Leopold told the offices of the Division that National Guard units were being deployed all over the border regions of Rechburg, purely as a protective screen, as well as to track down the smugglers and spies that usually trekked the back trails between all borders.
After dinner he made one last inspection of his men, he would often stop in front of a man, and indulge in a brief conversation, such as when he recognized sergeant Max Gilder.
“I recognize you, don’t I sergeant, were you not with my Dukes Own Guard Infantry Regiment last year”?
Without any hesitation and with full confidence the sergeant stood tall and erect like a rock, but the smile that was all too familiar to many when a solider when spoken to by the Duke was easily recognized.
“Yes Sire, I was a Corporal back then, Corporal Gilder Sire, 12 years with your Guard Sire”.
“Aaaah of course sergeant, Gilder were you not with the 1st Company, did I not reward you with the Gold wolfs head medal”?
“Aye Sire, The Wolfs head and the Gold Iron Cross” replied the sergeant, now smiling with pride and confidence.
“Good sergeant, well done. Now your family, how are they”? Enquired the Duke.
“The wife’s glad to see me home sir, but after just having our sixth son, I think she is glad to see the back of me for a while sire” replied sergeant Gilder.
Understanding how hard it is for a soldier to raise a family, the Duke patted the man on the shoulder and turned to Major Lemond his aide.
“Major, take note- all or any of Sergeant Gilders son’s that wish to enter the military school at Paring may do so under the veterans grant”
Sergeant Gilder, stood tall and erect, but with moisture in his eyes, he realized that in this instant all his sons now had the chance of higher schooling and a better chance in life than he could have ever offered them.
In an instant he knew his eldest son Conrad would not only go the military school, but also he could even make it to the Military academy in Ratisbon.
“Thank you sire, thank you” said the sergeant trying to hold back tears of gratitude and love for his sovereign.
In an instant the Duke moved on. As the Sergeant major passed Sergeant Gilder, he whispered
“Stop your bubbling you bloody idiot”, then he moved on behind the entourage following the Duke.

In that entourage, was First Minister Montgelas, he had witnessed many such conversations as had been held between the Duke and Sergeant Gilder, he realized that this was how the men were tied to their Duke, in a bond of comrade ship and respect.
Indeed he pondered, Sergeant Gilder would charge a battery of 12 pounders for his Duke from any time now.

On the dawning of a new day the progress crossed the Rechburg border and entered the United Kingdom, the commander of the United Kingdom Escort came forward to the Duke passed his respects, the entourage then made their way to North Hampton.

Forester Alois Girard had over the last 2-3 weeks noticed an increase of military activity in the woods that he worked as well as further east near the Maldoria border. Being an ex soldier he recognized the difference between an army on exercises and an army getting ready for combat. This seemed to be an army going somewhere, though he admitted to himself it was the training period for the Rechburg army.
It occurred to Alois however that there was something like a Corp of Infantry in the region of the northern town of Fekmuhl up near the Maldaorian-United Kingdom border and it seemed to stretch way south of his woods.

A lot had happened in the last month, first he had noticed increased border patrols by Landwehr light cavalry, then regular cavalry had been noticed and now infantry and a bloody lot of them. His cousin Michael further south down at Wolkering had told him last week he had noticed heavy cavalry moving about.
Then two nights ago, in the Bogshead tavern Alois had been enjoying a beer with Constantine Bonnet the postmaster when he told all and sundry that some very strange men had moved into his post office and were inspecting the mail.
“What’s the goddamn world coming to when a postmaster cannot even deliver his mail without some grubby fisted bureaucrat snatching it out of his hands.
All the patrons in the tavern became quiet because most recognized there were two such grubby fisted bureaucrats sitting quietly over a beer in the corner, Alois had made himself scarce quickly. Yesterday Alois heard that a new postmaster had moved in and his friend Bonnet had been arrested as a Maldorian spy.

Rechburg Diplomat Steven Hyde had finally made it to Petrogia capital of the Grand Duchy of Kronstadtia. It had been an eventful journey, originally his brief had been to try and get a defensive treaty with Kronstadtia, but then rumors and local papers reported increased tensions between Terror Incognita and Kronstadtia; eventuating in the latest news that a Kronstadtia merchant vessel had been sunk.
This morning a Rechburg diplomatic courier had caught up with him with new instructions.

From Foreign Affairs Office
To: Foreign Affairs Officer Steven Hyde.

Due to the changing situation in relations between Terror Incognitia and Kronstadtia you are now not only to try to reach a accommodation in regard to a defence treaty and access rights, but you will try to assist in mediating peace between Incognitia and Kronstadtia.
The First Minister reminds you that your first obligation is to maintaining the treaty with Incognitia, this is of prime importance, then secondly you will try to negotiate an treaty with Kronstadtia and finally help to mediate peace between Incognitia.
At this stage we are not sure if Incognitia has any official representation in Petrogia, but as either side has not made an official declaration of war we will assume they are still there, this should facilitate any negotiations. If there is no Incognitian representation you will inform our embassy they will assume responsibility for Incognitian diplomatic matters until further notice.
Signed Montgelas.

Steven made his way to the Grand Dukes palace to present his credentials.

The road to North Hamton from the border of Rechburg first ran through the small village on the border then between the two forests and was unpaved, onto the main road between Yorkshire and North Hampton that was paved and well looked after. It was on the dirt road, that hills lied to the south, half way between the village and the main road, that the Duke's convoy was being followed. A corporal and three troops of His Majesties Royal Yorkshire Hussars dismounted behind a hill, leaving their horses at the bottom and climbing to the top. The corporal pulled out his telescope and observed the convoy taking note of the flags flying, and the uniform of the few soldiers. He grinned and looked over to the troopers laying down behind him.

"It's a Rechburg convoy boys. Best watch for any bloody highway men, last 'hing we need is a 'ead Duke. Bet it won't go over with the King too 'ell."

The Rechburg Duke would have passed many more patrols hidden and on the road, a good sign of the King's new plan in progress.

---

On the main road just south of North Hampton, the construction of a second garrison for the city was in the works, it's walls partially complete, and yet it was a fearsome sight. The commanding officer was alerted when the Duke's convoy came into sight, and a squadron of his Guard Lancers were dispatched to guide the Duke to the King's palace. Three shots were also fired from the cannons, put into place just that morning, as a salute.

The squadron took up positions in the front and rear, taking them through the town, when men stood at guard at every corner. It was a quick ride north, just short of the north garrison that the King's Palace lay. The giant gates were opened by men in red kilts and black jackets and bear skin caps on their head, with muskets slung on their shoulder. The Duke and his men were led down the drive way where the King sat on a black horse, his white uniform of the navy a starch contrast to the horse and black pants that had a single red stripe down the side. He worn a bicorne, General Beckett in his best uniform sat beside him on a white horse a frown on his face, but that wasn't out of the ordinary, meanwhile the King had a wide smile as he approached the Duke's men. The Queen was no where in sight, finding the sun too hot for her pale like skin.

Here at last thought Duke Leopold as his post chaise approached the King and General Beckett.
Princess Sophia whispered
“Where is the Queen?”
The Duke had noticed the Queens absence as well; he hoped it didn’t bode an ill wind.
Finally stopping he dismounted from his Black and Gold post Chaise.
Looking back behind him he saw the procession pulling up, the post chaise’s carrying Montgelas and his entourage. The Guard Carabineer in their totally black uniforms with the black Cuirass with the Gold embossed wolfs head front and back sat still and erect, yet their eyes were everywhere and on everyone.

He walked over to the where the King still sat on his horse along with General Beckett.
Casually dusting himself down he said
“Greetings Brother, it’s a damn hot ride here”
Montgelas on arrival had quickly finished his notes on all he saw on the journey, he stumbled awkwardly out of his post chaise, somewhat covered with ink and smoke ash on his vest.
The Duke watching Montgelas thought to himself,
Ahem, I guess what he lacks in finish and polish he makes up for in intellect, but why couldn’t he be just a little less eccentric.

The Duke moved round to the left side of the post chaise and helped his wife out.

“Greetings and salutations Sire” she said

Jessie raised his rifle, aimed, fired, and quickly returned to the back of the line to begin reloading as the next man took his shot. it was the third day of constant rifle drill for the rifle battalion of the 3rd infantry brigade of the 2nd division. they were to form part of the corps marching south, and The Brigadier (every man in the brigade thought, and even somehow contrived to speak, the title with capital letters when referring to their commander) wanted them Ready.

so, while the other brigades were still being made ready, the three-two was at full strength, fully stocked, and burning through ammunition in training. yesterday's drill had been accuracy, the day before's, using 'blanks' (cartridges containing more paper and no bullet) so no mistakes resulted in someone getting shot in the head, drilling the riflemen in their block tactics. (elsewhere the musketeers had been being drilled in formation changes, most likely.) today's drill was simple rate of fire. a rifleman had to work harder, more precisely, to maintain a useful rate of fire, and even then it was still lower than that of a musketeer, and it was for this reason that the older blocks had been reintroduced for their use rather than the more common liner tactics.

that evening an announcement was made: they would march in two weeks. in theory, they'd cross the border ten days later.

the next day they drilled in formation again, along with the other battalions and the brigade's horse battery. once again using the blank cartridges, the units were deployed against each other in various situations, again and again to accustom the men to as many of the sensations of battle as possible without actually shooting a number of them.

currently, the rifle battalion was being supported on it's right by the battery. marching toward it were the other three battalions, the center deployed out in line, and those on either side in column.

first the cannons opened up, 'fireing' on the column in front of them, and the colonels in the opposing battalions counted off men who were 'dead'. then the column directly in front charged the guns, to interpose it's self in the line of fire, and thus allow the other two units to advance unhindered, and hopefully the other column to flank the 'enemy'. if they were lucky, they might take the guns themselves. the riflemen ignored them for the moment, instead focusing on the line directly in front of them. the guns would fire until the last moment then limber up and pull back. that was what they did. if they failed in a situation like this, it was their own stupid fault for being slow.

then the muskets ahead closed to two hundered and ten yards. "front rank, aim!" up and down the line the command went. two hundered yards. "front rank... Fire! down! Clear! second rank, Fire!" this repeated through all ten ranks of the rifle block, allowing them to maintain a higher rate of fire, in a tighter concentration, more accurately, and from further away than any musket line could hope for. in theory each rank aimed as the one in front was given the order to fire. in reality, the first few ranks aimed sooner than that, and the last few 'aimed', due to smoke and the fact that every target directly ahead had probably taken 3 balls already, only in so far as they made sure their gun wasn't pointed down far enough to hit the men crouched in front of them. some colonels, in fact, drilled their blocks to have each rank fire at an angle slightly further off center, thus effectively 'walking' the unit's fire down the line. the rifles in the three-two, however, maintained direct, straight ahead fire, their colonel (one Charles Sanders) preferring the shock effect and it's advantage in the following charge, rather than trying to kill as many enemies as possible with the volley it's self.

in this case, as in most, it worked. the 'enemy' line's entire center third was marked off as 'casualties' and lay down. after the tenth "clear!" the next orders was "stand! bayonets! Charge!" each man having, supposedly, fixed his sword bayonet while those behind him were firing. in reality, often the last two ranks ended up not bothering to fix their bayonets and instead either using them as swords or using the un-modified rifle as a weapon. rarely did they have to fight immediately anyway. in the ensuing melee, it was more important that they stay with the block to give it the momentum, and it was more important that the block moved before the shock of the volleys wore off, than that those last ranks have bayonets fixed to rifles.

the rifles sprinted forward, past the reforming column on their right, the guns having moved back before unlimbering and 'fireing' again, past the column on their left, which was still attempting to flank them, and had not advanced as far to begin with, and straight into the gap where the center of the line Had been. at this point the order to halt rang out, rather than actually fighting the other units in their own brigade. none the less, had they hit home, it would have been devastating, as the line had attempted to close up, but was still in the process of doing so, neither a solid line in front, nor two units to either side still firing. by atempting to close ranks so as to present a single unit and continue effective fire, they had weakened their resistance to a charge, however briefly, at a critical moment.

shortly there after, the column which was not being mauled by artillery attempted to reinforce the melee, hitting the rifles from the rear. while the, normally relatively safe, rear ranks were deemed to have taken losses, the weakness the rifles had exploited still existed, allowing them to simply punch through the remains of the line, rather than becoming trapped.

so went the theory anyway. several more such exercises were conducted that day, and training and exercises continued until the corps marched south.

Rechburg Chronicle.
Military Preparedness.
In what the Rechburg Military Bulletin regards as a period of increased tensions people of Rechburg cannot fail to notice the increase in the level of military preparations.
Louis Carnot of Ratisbon Coach Builders revealed in an interview that the demand for military wagons has increased 300% over the last month.
“There is a demand for all types of wagons from the flying ambulances with the new spring leaf system to the supply wagons and ammunition caissons. I haven’t seen this level of demand for several years and I suspect something big is up.”

The Rechburg Iron Foundry confirmed that there have been new orders for heavy artillery, in particular siege artillery.
The Rechburg Stud has confirmed that this seasons horses will not be sold to our normal international buyers but are instead required for the Rechburg military.
Yesterday 10,000 reservists were recalled, these men have begun to arrive in and around Ratisbon already.
It has been revealed through sources that these men that have been recalled only finished there service period last year, it seems that they are all from the 7th Infantry Division.

This reporter has made several attempts to interview people from either the military or the Government and I have only received “No comment” in answer to any questions regarding the increase in military preparedness.

Meanwhile the Duke has gone to the United Kigdom for "urgent consultations' with our Northern Neighbours.

Having taken a small naval escort right round from the Inner Sea to the northern coast, and thus to the United Kingdom, the Tyrant had at last arrived.
He still wasn't entirely sure if his presence was expected, but that was no matter.
One of the frigates had darted ahead to at least let the Harbourmaster know; as the small flotilla came in, the marines prepared for a bit of ceremonial, and the Tyrant's party made final preparations for their journey to the Royal Palace.

King Fredrick gave the Duke a knuckle salute, where a man raises his index knuckle to his eye brow, a simple salute in no means a military salute apart from the navy. "Yes it does get quite hot this time of year here, I quite like it but my dear wife can't stand it. She is in the back under several sun umbrellas." He waved to a Sergeant in the Guards while the Duke helped the women out of the post chaise, who ran over and game the King a crisp salute. "This man will take your horses Duke and yours young lady, then we can go around back and relax for a while before we start anything. Fancy some tea? Or perhaps chilled tea?" The King got down from his own horse and let the Sergeant's Corporal take the reins and led it towards the sables. General saw the King get down and followed suit. He smiled at the Duke and the woman.

"Good afternoon folks, just another day in the Kingdom, I do hope our men were able to keep your journey highway men free? The name is General Lord Arthur Beckett, Commander of His Majesty's Army."

---

The dork master was surprised to hear of the Tyrant's arrival and prepared several of Royal ship's marines for a Guard Party. It was a bit of a rush, but when the flotilla came into his telescope sights, several of the Ship of the Lines had been rearranged to fit the Tyrant's ships. A message to the local garrison was also dispatched and the messanger returned with a squadron of each Lancers and Hussars for the Tyrant's trip to the King's summer residence.

OOC: Alright we can move right along.
Rechburg

(OCC- To get things underway I will start the proceedings)
The Great Hall
North Hampton
United Kingdom

Seated around the table were the heads of state for the United Kingdom King Frederick and his advisors, The Tyrant of Incognitia and The Duke of Rechburg with Montgelas.

After the initial speeches of greetings and friendship all parties sat down to state their case in regard to the proceeding. Duke Leopold started the proceedings:

The Duchy of Rechburg has been greatly troubled by its neighbors, on one side we have Kronstadtia, which looks as if it may become embroiled in a war with Incognitia, despite efforts by my Government to mediate a peaceful resolution.
On the opposite side we have Maldoria, which has caused us constant problems, mainly with agitators from the émigré aristocrats who fled from Rechburg, it seems they want to return to the old ways.

To this end I am seeking reliable partners on whom I can rely upon and who can rely on me.
As Rechburg is not a Naval power we sought a nation that would assist us in protecting our mercantile trade. In this we have been grateful for the support from Terror Incognitia.
However on Laurentia we seek a reliable ally that can assist us in our defence, and in return we can assist should they have troubles.
To that end we have identified the United Kingdom as a reliable ally.

Initially Rechburg seeks a mutual defence alliance, with both Terror Incognitia and the United Kingdom.
Secondly we are prepared to offer gains from any offensive action to be taken against Maldoria. In the north there are opportunities for the United Kingdom to extend their territory. Rechburg seeks a corridor of territory to a port, once taken this port will be expanded at Rechburg expense and the naval facilities will be offered to Terror Incognitia.
As I mentioned we do not seek to expand as a naval power, all we seek is an opportunity to expand our mercantile trade.
However having a port will allow us to move troops via a friendly fleet to areas where allies require assistance.

Finally on behalf of Rechburg I will state clearly that Maldoria will be made to suffer for harboring these terrorists, consequently elements of the Rechburg are already established on the border ready to attack. We are suggesting that the United Kingdom make use of the opportunity to expand southwards, and all we ask from Terror Incognitia is that they prevent any power transferring forces via the sea to Maldoria. For that they will be provided with a naval base run at Rechburg expense.

Rechburg concludes their case.
Terror Incognitia
18-10-2007, 09:55
The Tyrant had been considering what Rechburg was likely to want from these negotiations, and was now prepared to speak.

"Our people have long been against entanglements on Laurentia. I believed that this had changed, and wished to maintain the balance of power, and thus offered our guarantee to Rechburg.
However opposition to the pact has grown more intense, and frankly if an honourable way to end our guarantee to Rechburg can be found, I will welcome it.
Thus if a defensive alliance is successfully concluded between the United Kingdom and Rechburg, I hope my Duke that you will take no offence if I request an end to our treaty, since the United Kingdom will be far more able to act in your defence than Incognitia in any case.
We still hold the nation and people of Rechburg in the highest esteem, and would welcome being able to trade with them directly in the fairly near future."

OOC: The real reason is that I see an alliance of the UK, Rechburg, myself and Angermanland as being strong enough for RP-breakage; on the other hand two major blocs of myself and Angermanland against Rechburg and the UK holds interesting possibilities, especially if we both have more minor problems in our own back yards.

18-10-2007, 10:04
The Duke looked to the King of the United Kingdom,
"May I reply Sire".

I readily accept that should The United Kingdom agree to our proposal, then I will relinquish any obligation on your part and our treaty would be null and avoid. That however depends on my brother Frederick, if however the United Kingdom decline the offer of a mutual defence treaty then I would expect our treaty to remain in being."

The Duke then turned to King Frederick,
"Thank you Sire".

The King listened to what the other two had to say, willing to listen till everything was done and said. Then when the two finished he looked up from a piece of paper explaining the intellegence on both the Rechburg and Terror Incognitia from what was release. He looked up and offered a smile. Terror Incognitia's withdrawal from the alliance ment he would not have to share his ports. It worked, not to mention the promise of more land.

Meanwhile the Queen listened and when the mention of land to be gathered in the east, she smiled and nudged her husband in the ribs softly, but with force. He knew what it ment, the Queen was happy with the arrangements up to this point.

"Well it sounds like that is quite acceptable here. I think now we can work out the final details to out alliance Duke? I am sure you have heard that in honor of your word, I require a sum of men. A sign of respect and honor to your word. They will fight in the campain to..." he stopped and thought for a second for the right word, "free the opressed people of Maldoria and introduce them to a proper way of life."

Mandalorian Territory

Mercenaries paced the western border of the territory. The western border had been the only main area where enemies could come in from land. Thus, the defenses were some of the best. Sharpened stakes, lines of idle troops, and various other defenses would make an assault by foreigners near impossible.

News of the alliance with United Kingdom was met with great joy and celebration, a Te Deum was sung in the churches of Rechburg. On the return of the Duke from the United Kingdom a great diplomatic ball was organised in Ratisbon.
The Guest of honor was the United Kingdom’s ambassador. During the ball there were incidents involving the Maldorian ambassador, on one occasion he complained he was being unfairly snubbed and that several people had unjustifiably had jostled him. The Duke apologized to him personally but explained that given the circumstances of raiders, smugglers, émigré agitators and mercenaries crossing the borders; the Rechburg people were becoming quite concerned.

The ambassador from Terror Incognitia was presented with a portrait of the Duke and his wife Princess Sophia; the Duke spoke of the appreciation the Rechburg people felt for the support Terror Incognitia showed their nation.

This morning the 14th Infantry Brigade paraded in Victory Square for a inspection by the Duke prior to their deployment to the United Kingdom.
The 14th Brigade consists of 19th and 20th Infantry Regiment(3 Bns each), the 9th Jager Battalion (rifle) and the 11th HA 9pdr Battery (6 Guns). (5070 men). It is a veteran unit and quite used to deployment to assist our allies. It is commanded by Brig Gen Claude Lorge himself a veteran of many campaigns and son in law to our army’s commander in chief Prince Wrede.
In his speech to the Brigade the Duke paid homage to the Brigade and its illustrious history, he declared that as one of the army’s most experienced units it had much prestige to maintain he was assured that they would once again add to the Glory of Rechburg arms. He reiterated to the men of the Brigade as well as their families, that the Brigade would be deployed under the normal practice of veto for deployment if Brig Gen Lorge felt the Brigade was being deployed or led in a unsatisfactory manner, he however went on to say this veto had never been used by Rechburg units on international deployment.
After the speeches the Duke walked amongst the men of the Brigade before sending them on their way. With flags flying and bands playing the Brigade left for the United Kingdom Border.
As a reporter of many years experience of seeing units being sent on international deployment, I have to say this time there were not many dry eyes.
This time people felt war was closer than it had been for many years.

OCC - Delesa you can deploy the Brigade where you require it.

OOC: Stop, now. That is godmoding.

1) What if my 'ambassador' didn't want to come to your ball?

2) Raiders? Smugglers? Mercenaries? ...What the hell. Please, stop this, you are seriously ruining it. Unless you have a really convincing excuse, just stop RPing with me. It is wankery at it's best.

I never said there were actually smugglers or whatever, The rechburg authorities claimed there were, it would be perfectly proper for you to deny any such infringements. Good grief have you never heard of building a prima facie case for something to happen, or not happen as the case may be. Making a claim there are smugglers etc is not godmoding, saying that Maldorian smugglers did this or that is godmoding. There is a significant difference between what my character say or claim and what your people do or dont do.
You say Im RPing with you, ummmm I checked and I did find this is a RP, so I am at a loss to understand you or where you are going with that one.

I do accept that your if its your wish your ambassador doesnt go to diplomatic balls and events of any kind,(which makes him a very odd ambassador) so perhaps it was that he was heckled and jostled in the streets. Of course it may eventuate he doesnt go out either, then the Rechburg soliders sharpened their swords on the steps of your Embassy, and verbally abused your reclusive ambassador.

I am not trying to ruin anything, I am trying to make the RP enjoyable with posts on events that did happen in history, but perverting them into the context with a RP. You on the other hand dont want to RP, well thats fine too, but ummmm.

The only event that I have claimed DID happen was the diplomatic ball, and that your ambassador attended, for that I apologise, everything else maybe conjecture and mis information, as I said deny it. "But of course the Rechburg authorities know better."

All I have been doing is trying to do is maintain a dialogue and story line, you on the other hand pop in occasionally, whack a few sticks in the ground, line up some soldiers and say assault is impossible, if we all do that no one attacks anyone, and there seems little point in having a RP.
You say there is Wankery, well let me tell you wankery is not a Rechburg pastime and so I therefore deduce those "idle" Mandorian soliders in the woods pass their time indulging is such filthery to pass the time of day.
I think I feel a new article coming on in the Rechburg Chronicle.

Wilhelma Staufen was totally awed by the numbers of soldiers marching past her house in Dunzling. There must have been thousands and thousand of them. Her papa had talked about soldiers moving elsewhere in Rechburg, but goodness this was in her own town, and they were right there in the fields outside of the town making camps.
They were so handsome those young infantrymen, the swaggering hussars and the dour Cuirassiers. Wilhema's mother had locked her in the house, but she could still wave to the men from the window of her upstairs bedroom.

Mama said they were safe now, from those awful Maldorians; Wilhelma wondered if it was true, the rumours that claimed those ghastly robber soldiers the mercanaries did really eat babies and practice perverse sexual practices in the forests near the border.

For several days now Steven Hyde the Rechburg diplomat on a special mission for his Duke had been hoping to meet with the Grand Duke of Kronstadtia in Petrogia.
Each day he makes his way down to the Dukes palace and each day he returns tired but more determined to deliver his message.

ooc: how large is your brigade number wise?

North Hampton

General Lord Harold Duxbury sat at his table inside a tent. He over looked several papers, reports on the progress on the assembly of his 70,000 man army. Regiments from all across the north were marching to North Hampton, heeded the call to arms from the king's messengers. Irregular Regiments were filling up from their local garrisons and marching to the call. So far the General's aides counted near 40,000 men, and already open fields were short, and homes for the arriving soldiers drying up. Soon they would have to move out, and begin the campain, in hopes to drain someone else's supplies, not so much our own.

Prince Alfred sat looking at himself in a mirror in his own tent, admiring the epaulets on his shoulder. He wore the uniform of 19th Royal Dragoon, he bore the rank of Major, one that he did not earn himself, but got from royal statue, unlike his younger brother Prince Leo, a Captain in the Royal St. Myhre Highlander Guards, the equivalent of a Major anywhere else in the Army. Prince Leo earned his way to that rank, fighting and proving his worth like every other man in the Highlander Guards. Alfred grumbled and fixed his collar and walked out, his bicourne under his arm, he was headed to war.

Commander of the 5th Division Lieut Gen Bertrand Caulincourt arrived in Dunzling to give the orders to his subordinates. He had just arrived from Nieder where he had been his issued with his orders from the III Corp commander General Maximillian Kreutz. Like all other commanders involved in this invasion he was determined his unit would perform miracles for his beloved Duke. The huge supply trains were established on the north side of Dunzling his own Division deployed to the south of the city. The units of the 5th Light cavalry Brigade patrolled the border, passing along the cordon of National Garde units that also patrolled the border.
The excitement of the Corp going to war was electric to experience, but as General Kreutz said during his briefing, discipline had to be tightly maintained because war had not yet been declared. .
