The students lined in front of him reminded Fay of a recruiting station. So young and so ambitious...yet they don't know what the future holds for them. The table to the side was filled with weapons. Fay waited for the students to quiet down and started the class.

"So.....Welcome to my class everyone. You shall...ugh...You can call me Fay since the word sir makes me look old. I will train you how to shoot, throw and use the weapons of range. Listen carefully because I do not want a hole in someone."

Fay held up a normal pistol, "To you, this may be a weak weapon. But...." Quickly turning around, he shot all the targets down. As the targets appeared again, Fay turned back to the class. "In the hands of an experienced, this weapon is a tool of destruction."

He gestured for the students to come closer to the table. "These are the weapons you will be learning to shoot with and in some cases throw. Hmm....fancy weapons these. A throwing star, also known as the Shuriken." Fay picked it up and threw it casually at one target. The shuriken embedded itself into the target. "Good for unheading someone in my opinion. Introduce yourselves for now as we will get to know each other in the future."

He produced a sling and removed a clawful of change from his pocket which he popped in his mouth and bit down on, spitting out a nearly round pellet which he loaded into the sling. "Weyr targit?"

Watching quietly as the other students introduce themselves Indigo is impressed with the jaw strength of the Muri, Gerak, but wonders how he would take to modern weapons. He was quite correct that those molded for a human fame were too small in hi immense hands. In her thoughts she began making alterations to the pistol that Professor Fay had used.

Resting his hand on Star's sniper, Fay smiled gently, "We will be touching on snipers but there is a class specified for that." Raising his voice to reach the whole class Fay said,"We will be starting with small weapons first as this is your first class and I don't want to scare you."

Walking back and fro like a sergeant drilling recruits, Fay pointed to the pistols. Taking one himself, Fay showed the students how to lock, load and prime one.

"Rule #1.....Never hold your breath when shooting. Breath in and out in a pattern that will suit you. Be relaxed. Line up against the shooting cubicles please. Headsets to block out sound is optional for you to wear can be found in your cubicle."

Fay needed to know the level of his student before introducing the other more complex weapons.

Headsets to block out sound? Gerrak didn't fancy the idea of that-the popping little guns were not as loud as the big Muri railguns the military used, but he felt that muting his hearing-and by implication, his Darksense-would make this more a challenge. Still, there was probably a reason for it-some odd alien reason-and he decided to comply.
His Darksense was muted, but still there. The compartment was clear, but the targets lay beyond it-this headset would prove cumbersome, but he WAS here to learn. The targets were blurry, but he could make them out still and they weren't moving, which made it easier. He'd hunted tzin-tzin in his youth, but they were larger than the targets-and moved.
"Abowd de sayz of a mukade's hedd." he observed, sighting. "Me hit good me think."
The pistol was ludicrously small, and he was surprised at how weak it was-his sling travelled faster than this slugthrower-probably why the Muri eschewed firearms. His first shot hit the upper third of the target, and he adjusted his grip, and tried again. His second was too the right, in the second ring-as were the third and fourth.
He would definately need to construct slugthrowers sized for him-perhaps the instructor would be kind enough to inform him as to the weapons he'd need-handling these undersized things was difficult, and frustrating.
Once he'd emptied the clip, hitting the target each time but not it's center, he raised up his sling and fired of the shot he'd made.
The slingstone hit dead-center, with adequate force the target burst in a cloud of splinters and sawdust.
"HA! Stooped targit noes wot Muri like now!" he howled, sending a mocking curse in Shadowspeech at his inanimate opponent.
The instructor was coming over to him at a speed that indicated destroying school property was not a wise idea. Gerrak prepared to be lectured, but did not feel bad-he meritted this, and would endure his penalty with good grace.

Pat didn't bother with the ear protection as he picked up his pistol. He weighed in his hand and checked the balance on it before comfortably falling into the Weaver stance. He fired two shots...25/25 or he hit within the area of a quarter at 25 feet. He then switched to the modern stance and fired two shots. Same result. Lastly he fell into the Point shooting stance. One shot was a fraction left the other was 6 inches below his intended placement. "Damn" Pat sighed. He then went back to the modern stance and fired the remaining bullets in the clip hitting center mass or head every time.

Fay grinned inwardly as he observed Star. He had once been like that.....except more direct. Motioning to Star that he had gloves on which Fay himself had custom made to handle extreme temperatures and also not react with electricity at all. Taking a pistol from the table, he handed it to Star and gestured for her to take it.

"This is not your lesson. You might be exceptional with your weapons but what if you are on a battlefield. Imagine this situation. Your weapons got disabled and all you have is the enemy's weapon. Touch the wrong things and you could just have molten metal in your hands."

Leaving the pistol to Star, Fay returned to the other students. He passed Gerrak and Fay turned around.

"Gerrak....Nice use of your slingshot. I take it you would shine in throwing weapons. Think about this. You just emptied your clip and threw your shot leaving you vulnerable to the enemy." Raising his voice to the whole class,"This is where it counts. Everyone. Back to the table please."

Fay took his position at the controls and waited for the students. He pointed at Pat who he had seen was quite good in the right stance.

"Pat. On my mark.....I want you to shoot the targets down as many as you can." Fay typed a command into the controls and made the targets move. The speed wasn't great, equal to someone walking.

"Three......Two......One....MARK!"

Fay rolled his eyes towards the sky and turned towards Star. He gestured for Pat to stop for a while. Picking up a pistol from the table, Fay loaded the clips. Beckoning for Star to take her place at the cubicle, Fay walked to the cubicle next to Star. He set the targets to move at a faster speed that would equal the speed of someone running.

"Here's a deal, Star. You might think yourself above everyone else but in times of war.......you will have to depend on someone to gun down an enemy in front of you. I'm paid with ridiculous salaries to teach everyone that and right now...you are disrupting my lessons with your weapons. So, we have a little exercise.....Shoot the most amount of targets to win. If I win, you will use the weapons given to you. Name your prize."

"Sorry I'm late, sir. Mind if I use my own weapon at first?" He pointed to the handgun in his holster. He took it out and loaded a clip into it from a bet around his waist. Pat didn't bother to listen to the other students talking. He liked target practice better than that. Pat placed the pistol on the table inside the firing stall. Then practicing his VIP training he picked up the pistol and loaded another clip as quickly as possible. He fell into the Point Stance (which was his worst) and began engaging targets. Two shots two targets down, he then switched to his left hand and engaged the remaining. He hit 6 out of the 8. "At least the bullets are free" he said remorsefully as he loaded another clip and began shooting the stationary targets left handed.

Indigo had shot competently enough with the pistols the school psovided, but was not a spectacular marksman with them. She'd only learned to shoot this type of weapon six months ago, though she had learned the classical duelist pistol from childhood. Her reason for being in this class was not to learn to be some sort combat expert, that was not her interest in life, but she wanted to maintain her skill with these weapons.

Star's arrogant attitude bothered her greatly and she wondered why the child had come to the University if she already knew everything.

Kai didn't bother with drama or showing off. He simply, with the utmost competence, shot the X ring out of target after target with the various weapons laid out for them to practise on.

However if Star tried to fire that plasma grenade off within the shooting range she would find that it simply wouldn't detonate.

Gerrak took his chiding in stride-there was ammo strewn about him-rocks, casings, even the undersized pistol he was using today could be easily chewed into slingstones-but of course the instructor was right. Had he been a Muri, capable of rending stone and metal with his jaws, he could see that anything nearby could be spat out as Gerrak had done with his change, but the display of crowing would have been a fatal mistake on the battlefield.
Resolving to have weaponry crafted to fit, Gerrak scooped up debris and began chewing it, forming it into pellets before spitting them out and firing at the targets. He didn't need to spin the sling as much as he would hunting-only to match the speed of the pellets the devices spat-and he got passably by, stopping to scoop up more detritus as he needed.
The late arrival and his new weapon was intriguing-troll vision is not as sharp as their other senses, so this Spiker seemed a viable option to him. Eagerly, he watched, removing his headset to observe better the effects this new device would have.

Fay sighed to himself as his students started practicing with their own guns brought from their nation.

"Now I know how that History teacher feels......"

Continuing his walk through the cubicles, Fay watched as targets are being easily shot down which doesn't surprise him at all. Since the targets were moving too slow for him, Fay typed a command into the controls.

"Since most of you have your own weapons and skill, we will be doing this exercise. Please select a pistol of any kind. No grenade launchers.....yet. Take a sash on the table and use it to cover one eye. The targets will be moving faster and there will be obstructions for the targets to hide behind."

"Pistols?" Pat wanted to try out the G36. However he saw the H&K USP with the tactical flashlight and lazer-point and shoot system. Slowing his breathing down Pat pulled the USP. As he looked up with his one uncovered eye and everything began to slow down. Time seemed to almost stand still and the targets were barely moving. As he brought the .45 up to eye level he jammed a clip into it wile simultaneously going into his preferred modern stance. Acquiring his first target he pulled the trigger. *Blam* *ping* next target acquired *Blam* *Ping* next target *Blam* *Ping* and so on until the clip was out. Firing his 12th shot Pat ejected the spent clip and slid another into position wile cocking the weapon. Pat had done this as force of habit and soon realized there were no more targets in front of him. He looked at Professor Fay hoping to catch his eye to tell him he wanted more targets and more speed.

Fay smiled as targets were shot down and reappeared with holes in them. He will have to teach some of them how to use proper stances in the right situations. Noting down some obviously talented students down on his datapad, Fay typed a command to make the targets go even faster. It is moving at about a speed of 1 m/s which wasn't saying much but it was faster than the current speed.

"Exceed yourselves. Go for the farther targets. Try impossible shots. Control your vengeance because it will only make you fire at the inappropriate time. Gunning down someone who killed your team mate might be patriotic but finishing your clip in open ground is not."

Dominic nodded and took a sash and a USP. He tied the sash around his eye anmd walked over to the firing range, and closed both eyes. He thought back to the time a group of Void Raiders attacked the planet. He smiled and opened his eyes. He imagined himself in that situation, then emptied a clip into the targets, hitting mainly the neck, chest and legs. He stopped firing and turned to the teacher.

Indigo did as the professor requested, though she hit far fewer times. She had never practised with moving targets. Her teachers had not been instructing her for combat situations.

In the next Cube, Kai smiled and covered both eyes. Then he went back to shooting out the x ring of the targets. He'd have to let the professor he'd been doing this since before any of the others had even been born. But he didn't like the vengeful hunger he could feel rising off some of the others like wrathful ghosts.

Fay was right -any one who let anger, hatred and the need for some sort of revenge motivate them was a fool, and a danger to others.

Gerrak selected a pistol large enough to accomodate his hand and tied the sash around one eye. With the headset on and no binocular vision, the targets moving to compensate for, and this ludicrous toy, he aimed carefully, and followed the instructor's teaching.
His first target was clipped neatly at the top, and Gerrak cursed under his breath, adjusting his aim. Still, had it been prey, he'd have grazed it's skull, stunning it. His second shot would have hit it in the shoulder, spinning it and alerting it to his presence, but a quick flicker of his sling and the head came off the target.
Darkscanning to either side sheepishly, he shot the third target in a lung-this course was soo difficult, but if he removed the headset for Darksense, he felt he would be denying himself this lesson as the instructor intended.
Switching eyes after reloading was as dismal. His shots refused to become the instant kills a hunter preferred, instead maiming or worse, missing his target. Relying on his weakest sense-and half of that-was humbling, but he was compensating as he went along and improving.
While his contempt for the little slugthrower remained, he did have a grudging respect for the skill required to make one useful, and paid particular attention to Pat, who seemed an expert marksman-other than the guardian spirit, who had other venues, he seemed the most competant. Gerrak observed his style and stance and attempted to emulate it.

Fay noted that Gerrak has skills but only with weapons he is used to. However, firing with something so small to handle Fay knew it was hard. Noticing his shots will disable the person if real, Fay smiled as he noticed the problem.

"Gerrak. I've heard of something called the Darksense. Unclear about it but I've heard it would help you. Take off your headset, try shooting with the Darksense. When you are starting to get the shots you want, put it on again."

Examining the students, Fay passed Kai who was shooting with both eyes closed. Grinning, Fay knew that Kai would be one of the top in the class. Dominic was a good shot too since his shots were at the crippling area of a body. Moving to the command console, Fay increased the speed and this time, a few cardboards appeared of a different colour.

"Do not shoot the green ones. Shoot only the red ones! The army won't congratulate you on the highest amount of team kills."

Knowing this would present a problem to Kai since he won't see anything, Fay just crossed his arms and watched how he would react.

Nothing else mattered in the world. He was in the zone. Some call it the "shooters high". As the targets got faster so did Pat's shots. His VIP protection training and his Special forces training weren't even beginning to get taxed by this task. So he improvised. He began to double tap every shot, putting two bullets into every target instead of one. Not only did this increase the time spent on each target it also turned his 12 shot USP into a Navy Colt Action Revolver. Now he could begin to feel the challenge he had to reload twice as much. But even with this alteration he was still scoring bullseye s. Mabe not as frequently but still consistently.

With his headset off, Gerrak could not only make out the targets better, he could see Pat's various stances and that the man was tasking himself to improve the lessons learned.
Red-he believed that was the color of fresh meat, and squeezed off a shot that was a perfectly placed kill. When no groans he'd hit the wrong color rose, he tried again-and again did an excellent shot. Focussing on the color was forcing him to use his vision for targetting, and he believed he was getting the hang of it.
When he replaced the headset, his accuracy suffered, but the lessons he'd learned were improving his ability. The various stances he'd seen Pat using would be good once he'd commissioned properly-sized firearms.

Kai knew he'd have to expalin afterwards, but it would be better to get it out of the way sooner rather than later. The Instructor wanted only the red ones targeted? Well red felt different than green, and it wasn't as if he were seeing with physical eyes anyway. All the red ones went down the minute the X ring became visible.

Once that was done he placed the pistol he had been using on the bench, removed the sash and turned to Fay "I think we ought to have a talk"

As Pat continued to mow down targets he was suddenly faced with a dilemma. A red target appeared behind a green target and both were moving towards a concrete barrior. Following the targets Pat was confused. He wasn't sure of what to do. Still pointing the pistol at the targets Pat stood frozen. Everything seemed to slow down even further, until the targets weren't moving. Weighing his options Pat shot the green target in the leg then double tapped the red target. The buzzer signaled the end of the exercise. Pat ejected the half full clip and disassembled the pistol before placing it on the table.

This exercise was humbling-but Gerrak felt humility was good-far better than arrogance, anyway. His results were not as good as he'd hoped-perhaps 60% of the red targets, but he had struck none of the green. He knew he would improve with practice, but decided to write Deathlord Korth for copies of the old Zorak Zorani gun kata manuals. Trolls had largely abandoned slugthrowers as inadequate to their slings, but the Ordo Zorak Zorani revered all methods of warfare and destruction, and kept the old records.
