[Introduction]

The BTR-96 is a 8x8 wheeled armoured personnel carrier (APC) designed in Adygea by the Yaromir Dibrov Design Bureau as a private venture. The prototype was unveiled at the Voenpokaz'2006 exhibition held in Adygea in September 2006. A spokesman for Dibrov said at the unveiling that the unit cost was approximately $1.28 million in USD.

[Design]

The BTR-96 is the brainchild of a new school of military thought in Adygea: it is more similar to some Western models, such as the German TPz Fuchs or the Finnish Sisu Pasi, with the driver compartment in the fore, the engine and fuel tanks in the centre and an undivided troop compartment in the rear. The troops enter and leave the vehicle through the rear doors, and the driver and commander are provided with doors located on the sides of the hull.

The vehicle is fairly customisable. The prototype is armed with the locally-designed TA-30 30 mm chain gun (on a remote mount on top of the turret), a PKT 7.62 mm coaxial machine-gun and one AG-10 40 mm grenade launcher.

The glacis plate of the BTR-96 is elevated at an angle of 38 degrees, and the underbelly is of a roughly similar angle, until it meets the first wheel. It is protected by a Kevlar spall liner and light ceramic plating, with somewhat thicker armour on the undercarriage, which is angled out from the middle.

There are two panes in the windshield, which can be covered with thick steel plates if needed, and there are similar windows on each of the passenger and driver doors. On the left side of the roof is the PKT machine gun and the AG-10 in one mount, while the elevatable (-2/+7 deg.) turret houses the TAT-30. The guns in the turret can elevate a further -3.5/+12 degrees.

The The BTR-96 is equipped with a 5-gear gearbox and an automatic transmission. All eight wheels are capable of independent movement.

[Electronics and Equipment]

The BTR-96 has been equipped with the NOKOM fire-control system, wirelessly linked to the vehicle commander's helmet and the gunner's station. NOKOM incorporates a small, short-range radar for detecting and retracing ballistic trajectories, highlighting threat areas on the CVC's HUD. The vehicle commander is provided with a day/night scope complex, with a range of approximately 700 metres in daylight. The complex includes both infra-red and night-vision viewers, in addition to the basic filter.

The gunner's station is equipped with the NOKOM viewer, as well as remote controls for the TAT-30 turret. The driver is equipped with a viewer complex similar to the VC's and the SNP-212 GPS navigational computer.

The BTR-96 comes standard with a CBR/NBC air-conditioning/cooling system, as well as halon fire extinguishers and a scaled-down version of the Shtora-1 EOCMDAS system for jamming. The BTR-96 can also be equipped with a mine-roller.

To Whom It May Concern,

+++We at Yaromir Dibrov would, first and foremost, like to express our most sincere gratitude that you have decided to do business with us. It is our hope that you will be satisfied with our work, and will continue to consider us in the future.
+++The contract for producing one hundred (100) BTR-96 units, of the standard variant, has at this time been approved by the Board of Directors. The estimate for producing these units is approximately five units per month per factory, at $1.28 million ($1,280,000) USD, for a total duration of approximately five months, should they be produced in Adygea. If, on the other hand, you would prefer to have the parts shipped to Greal to be assembled there, that will also be possible. Please contact our Shipping Department as to which method you would prefer.

Sincerely,

HIS MAJESTY'S ROYAL DEFENCE MINISTRY

To whomever it may concern,

Our Defence Review Board noted with pleasure the release of Yaromir Dibrov Design Bureau's BTR-96 series of armoured personnel carriers, and have taken an increasing interest in its potential use within the Taerkasten Royal Army as part of our continuing modernisation and review programs. Said Board has identified a shortcoming in our APC equipment and the requirement for a replacement, and we believe the BTR-96 series may be the solution to that problem.

With this in mind, we would like to contract YDDB to produce ten units of each version of the BTR-96, including the standard model, to be delivered to the Royal Kingdom of Taerkasten for the purposes of testing and evaluation, for a total cost of $76,800,000, with the possibility of an order of several thousand units should our testing yield satisfaction. Although somewhat premature, we would also like to inquire as to the availability of domestic production rights and their pricing?

Sincerely,

Chief of the Defence Forces,
Lord Admiral of the Sea Sir Robert Guadalcázar

To the Admiral Guadalcázar,

+++We at Yaromir Dibrov would like to thank you for choosing us to fulfil your armed services' needs. We hope that, in the future, you will continue to consider us as your supplier of top-quality military equipment at an affordable cost.
+++The contract for procurement of sixty (60) BTR-96 units, ten (10) of each variant, has been approved, for a total of $7.68 million (76,800,000) USD. For domestic production in Adygea, the contract will be fully complete within three months, but parts may be shipped to your own factories if you are not satisfied with waiting for that period.
+++On the subject of domestic production rights for Taerkasten, we are afraid that the government of Adygea has not authorised us to do this, as there are several sensitive systems that are of concern to Adygean national security. At this time, there is no export model without those systems, but there may be in the future, if enough demand is shown by the buyers.

Sincerely,

To whomever it may concern,

While we are disappointed to hear this, we also understand your position entirely. We too are always reluctant to release sensitive military technologies to other nations.

Three months will be perfectly acceptable, and in our opinion quite fast anyway - we are in no particular rush. Upon the conclusion of our business and the delivery of the order, we shall commence our evaluation of the units, and shall let you know our decision and place any additional orders we may wish to make promptly afterwards.

Colonel Johnnson,

+++We are glad to hear of your interest in our product! It is our hope that, should all go well, your interest will translate to satisfaction with the aforementioned product.
+++While the BTR-96 has not been fielded in any conflicts to date, it was designed with the intent to be protected from such weapons as you mentioned (RPGs/improvised bombs), which are often in use by those factions which this vehicle would conceivably find itself pitted against. To that end, the engineers involved in the project included, as you can see by the publicity photographs, an undercarriage design which incorporates an angled bottom, so that the force of the explosion is directed away from the vehicle and, especially, the troop compartment. Furthermore, the BTR-96 was intended to work with cage armour; that is, resembling the current 'slat' armour of the United States' Army's Stryker vehicle, and also has the ability to drop down protective anti-RPG plates in front of the windows, which are likely to be the most targeted area of the vehicle.
+++Work is in progress on developing a domestic anti-missile system to replace the cage armour, but that is being developed by another company, and as such we cannot, to our dismay, inform you on the progress of that particular endeavour; it is, on the other hand, expected to be out of the design and preliminary testing phase very soon.

We are most pleased to hear that and sespucted that it would be some sort of cage to protect it, provided that it can be upgraded with the anti-missile system once the project is completed, there is , however, another requirement that we cannot find and that is the range (in Km or miles) and the BTR-96M we would like to know how many men can be laid down with the appropriate equipment fitted inside.

To whomever it may concern,

Following the conclusion of our tests, we believe that the BTR-96 represents a valuable tool for the Royal Army, and we wish to adopt it for moderate use in that department. While we prefer to develop our military equipment domestically, time and funding presently preclude this.

Ergo, it is my pleasure to hereby place an order for 17,500 BTR-96s, 5,600 BTR-96PTs, 3,100 BTR-96Ms, 1,500 BTR-96Ks, 2,500 BTR-96Rs, and 3,500 TSPA artillery support vehicles, for a grand total of $43,136,000,000. If at all possible we would prefer to pay a deposit of your choosing initially, and then pay upon reception each batch afterwards, in order to spread the cost somewhat. This order should satisfy roughly two-thirds of our estimated armoured infantry fighting vehicle requirement for the time being.

To whomever it may concern,

Indeed, this is one of the reasons why we initially inquired as to the possibility of domestic production rights - our military is presumably somewhat larger than your industrial infrastructures are accustomed to providing for. Contracting Taerkast defence industries to assemble the units domestically under the supervision of your own agents would be perfectly acceptable to us, and I am certain that the increased costs will be offset by the considerably lower shipping costs that will result. One can only hope that a contract of this scope will afford your company with the resources to expand their manufacturing base for future growth!
