History
The War of Many Lords
Back before Granate was a unified, there were thousands of tiny Duchies, Kingdoms, Republics that littered it's landscape. Wars between sometimes 10 groups was not uncommon. Beginning in early 1495 one of the Leaders of the Kingdom of Lucianus decided something needed to be done. So this King began to gather with him a vast force. He also worked to find Allies among his neighboring Kingdoms. Working with these kingdoms he was able to unite a large Portion of Granatian Territory. This Kingdom was called Bornsbruck, it is still called this in modern times, but as a province.
The other Lords and Kings were frightened by this one mans power. They began to work together and formed Large Kingdoms of their own. Two of these were Almsbruck and Penerbruck, which still are called this in modern times. Bornsbruck began to feel the pressure of this ever growing force of Enemies. Thus the War of the The Kingdoms began. This would last for 2 years, ending in 1497 with a victory for Bornsbruck. They began what later would be called the Subjugation of the Last Lords or as it is called in Modern Times "The War of Many Lords". In todays time we consider all this to be part of The War of Many of Lords.
The Failed Democratic Rebellion
After the War of Many Lords the Kingdom saw 6 years of unusual peace. During the era of the Lords there was wars that lasted weeks and days. Now that there wasn't any Wars happening, the Provinces saw an unacountable boon in the Harvests and Buildings were built throughout the Kingdom. There just a general feeling a good throughout the Kingdom. But this peace, was not to last. This time came to be know as the Short Peace.
In late 1503 the nation saw a rise in the general Dissenseion among the populace. The Kingdoms officials couldn't locate the source of it. The Goverment was getting a little hot under the collar seeing as this could screw up everything that the Kingdom had worked so hard to achieve. In January 1504 their fears were found to be true. Rebels who called themselves Democrats were leading rebels throughout much of the Kingdom. The problem was that many of the Democrats leaders were Former Lords who still held a large bit of power. These lords outfitted the rebels and even hired Mercenaries to fight for them. The Rebellion would last nearly a year with the signing of a Treaty that ended the rebellion, but forced the goverment to Found a Parliament so that the People's voice could be heard.
The Democratic Union
For the next 200 years there was no political upheaval. Throughout the Kingdom the people were happy and harvests were Bountiful. Life was good, for the Average Citizen. In the Upper Ranks there was much berating, intrique, and death. Individual Families fought each other openly for power, either in the Parliament or in the King's Council. In 1645 the King almost disolved the Council and Parliament due to three deaths by three different families. Things quieted down, mostly because they were using less direct methods. But this reality was rudely shaken to bits come 1703.
In 1703, the Parliament, with help from Military Leaders, overtook the Goverment. A short period of Fighting was seen as Royalist Forces fought back. The Parliament formed a new Goverment Called "The Democratic Union of Granate". This is also where the name Granate came from. For a period of 5 months, there was open Civil war between Royalist Forces and Unionist Forces. Fighting ended after a member of the Royal Signed a treaty handing power over to the Parliament. No Word, to this day, has been revealed who the member was. Rumors are that it was the Bastard Brother of King Richard Kleinhert, Joesf Klein.
For the next 50 years the Country was ruled by the Parliament. During this time many Lords lost there land but gained other things. Among them are money, power in the Parliament, or even other favors. The Country basically functioned the same as it did during the time of the First Monarchy, but without the King's Auto-Law or Veto Power. The Democrats were culling more and more support from the Populace. It would seem that the Kingdom would never return. That is, until Dictatorship Started.
The Dictatorship
In 1752 a man by the name Heinrich Akalein, was elected to the Head of the Parliament. He was seen as a bold, young face in a crowd of doddering old-timers. Many of his early policies were gladly accepted. But underneath, they sowed the path for his rise to the Posistion of Dictator. Heinrich worked with other members of Parliament to increase his individual power and award favors to those who helped him. On June 18th, 1753 he announced his accension of the Posistion of Leader for Life, Dictator to those who knew better. There were many who thought this was outrageous. But there was enough to surpport him and allow the action to go through. 10 days later he did the unthinkable. He disolved the Parliament, jailed members who didn't agree with him, and terrorized their families. Thus began 6 years of Terror.
Over the next 6 years he took away many of the Citizens Rights, rights they had earned under the Monarch and the Union. General dissent grew, but most revolts were quickly and ruthlessly cut down. Heinrich increased the power of the Military, allowing any Ranking leader from Col. up to announce Marshall Law in towns. Quickly, whole towns became play-things for sick and sadistic commanders. Life was hard, crops weren't harvested. Roads fell into disrepair. People went hungery like never before. And all the while Heinrich Akalein sat on his little Chait he called a throne and ate whilst "His" country starved. Open rebellions were crushed, so leaders went underground. The Two most influential leaders formed a pact that, 50 years earlier would be called insane. The leaders were Josef Kleinhert, Member of the Royal Family and Nikolai Grumman, Republican Parliament leader.
Together these two leaders lead their respective forces, Josef with his Royalists, and Nikolai with his Republicans. With their shaky alliance forged, they moved to start undermining the Current Regime. It wasn't hard considering it was nearly Bankrupt. Using money and influence they culled many members of the Military to assist them. Among these who were willing to help was General Alexander Grozjn. He used his forces to help rebel leaders move supplies and men around. Soon the rebels were ready to overthrow the goverment. All they needed was a sign that Heinrich would be open to capture. It came to them in the form of a Parade, in one of the most Rebellious towns in Granate. During the parade the rebels killed Heinrichs guards and took him prisoner. Without him the regime fell and many of it's leaders were taken prisoner. What happened to these prisoners is not known, but Heinrich was sumarily executed by Firing Squad.
The Republic of Granate
After the Dictatorship ended there was much talk among the leadership of the Rebellion. What kind of Goverment would replace the corrupt dictatorship they had fought to get rid of? After much debating, too much in some members eyes, they came to a General Consensus. The New Goverment would be much the same as the Union, but it would be more of a Republic with the Royal family having more power. This was generally well received among the populace. The first few months were rocky, because of the lack of the Parliament. The Parliament was reformed after two more months of the Goverment working without it. During the refounding ceremony there was a grand Parade and many Important figures gave Speeches.
For the next 100 or so years, the Parliament ruled as they did before the Dictatorship. For the first few years it was bumby because of the waryness of the populace to trust the Parliament again. But, thanks to many great members of the Houses, the Parliament enventually regained the Trust of the General Public. Many of the Dictatorship's laws were repealed and new ones were added to help protect the common citizen. Civil Rights flourished under the many administrations. Life was good, but underneath it all there was a general rumbling. Something was on the horizon, and only god knew what.
Return of the Monarchy
In 1853, life seemed to be good. Everything was going well as it had for nearly 100 years. Who would of guessed that during all of this an uprising would occur? Now this was not the rebellions of the past. It would seem that there was still members among the public that wanted the return of the Monarchy. This was a loud, obnoxious bunch, but they weren't rowdy. They preached in front Goverment Buildings about bringing back the Monarchy. Most had forgotten the Kleinherts, since they had basically retreated from the lime life 80 years ago. People at first were confused to who the dissenters were talking about. But soon after a little steam and a push from certain goverment officials the uprising picked up members by the Thousands. Soon it looked like there would be another rebellion.
But this time the transition from Goverment to Goverment was smooth. Careful deliberation among the leading Parliament Members and members of the Royal Family decided that the Monarchy should return, but with the Parliament still retaining a bit of it's power. It wouldn't be like before, they promised themselves this. Then they began to decide what to call the new goverment of the Country, finally after about 50 or so different names they settled on The Republican Monarchy of Granate. When the public was told this there was a general aura of celebration around the Country. 3 weeks later King Robert Kleinhert IV was crowned as Monarch with Queen Victoria Lannister-Kleinhert as his wife. He was Andrei Kleinherts great-great-great Grandfather.
