Kamunistan declares independence from Daytanistan

(OOC: For the next few weeks, I won't be able to write new posts very often. The progress of thread is therefore likely to be rather slow. I'd like the Kamunistani struggle for independence to be fought mostly on the popular and diplomatic fronts as a series of incidents rather than as a full military struggle. Foreign would-be meddling powers are welcome to attempt to interfere - unless the player of Daytanistan would prefer this thread to go in another direction.
Kamunistan and Daytanistan both have their wiki pages:

From: Supreme General Nazid Ibn-Allah Khavasov of the Self-Defense Militia Forces of the Oppressed Peoples of Kamunistan
To: General Secretary Farrokh Nugat of the Daytanistani Occupation Regime

In the name of Allah the forgiving and the merciful, and in the name of the proud people of Kamunistan.

We, the Kamuni people, who have endured long centuries of oppression by foreign imperialists; who have suffered under the hands of foreigners; who, in the service of foreign armies, have willingly defended this land against those who would enslave it time and time again; whose history has been written in foreign languages and by foreign hands, only to be finally destroyed by this current regime who continues to deny our unique long-standing cultural heritage; we, the Kamuni people, have finally risen. Here, in the city of Tirnan, we officially establish our existance as an autonomous, autocratic nation.

For over seventy harsh years we have been ruled by the current regime, who, aside from denying our ongoing oppression, have also twisted the sacred words of the Quran and the wise words of the Manifesto in the service of tyrants and despots who robbed us both of our traditional way of life and of the fruits of our labor. By declaring Kamunistan an independent nation, we hereby reclaim both our god-given right to live under His laws, and our natural right to enjoy the bounty of our ancestral patrimony. In the next few days, we will begin to excercise our right to deploy an armed force to protect our borders and to enforce peace and order in our lands.

We present the following demands, to be answered immediately by the Daytan government:

1. Recognition of Kamuni autonomy.
2. Recognition of people of Kamuni ethnicity living within the borders of Daytanistan.
3. Recognition of Kamunistani soverignity over the entire Tirnan plateau (the Kamuni lowlands), the Western Veyada Range (the Kamuni highlands) and the ancient Kamuni city of Marak, all of which are home to a substantial population of ethnic Kamuni.
4. Exemption of Daytanistani citizens of Kamuni ethnicity from compulsory military service and from unlawful forced labor, and admittance of said people to voluntary service in the Kamuni Militia and to volunteer work for the Kamuni development corps.
5. Exemption of Daytanistani citizens of Kamuni ethnicity from any laws which are abject to the sacred word of Allah or which violate their basic human rights.
6. Opening of at least one border pass for the exclusive use of the Kamuni nation in order to facilitate commerce with foreign nations.
7. Complete and immediate demilitarization of the Ashata and Kashoun provinces, excluding areas immediately adjacent to the borders (not including the pass mentioned in section 6).
8. Removal of all taxes and tariffs on canned Kamuni camel milk.
9. Accepting multinational soverignity over the roads connecting the three zones mentioned in section 3.
10. Cancellation of all restrictions on freedom of movement which Kamuni citizens are currently subject to.

Should our demands not be met, we will be forced to view Daytanistan as a hostile nation and take appropriate measures.

Signed: High Council of the People's Mullahs and Supreme General Nazid Ibn-Allah Khavasov of the Self-Defense Militia Forces.

OOC: Let's assume this is partially SIC, since it's pretty unlikely we'd be willing to let both parties know what's going on even though they are both being contacted. Yes, we're manipulating competitive bidding between both sides to benefit ourselves.

SIC:

Ministry of State

We have heard of the struggle in your nation, and, although we are loathe to commit any kind of military forces to this area for political as well as financial reasons, we are willing to be involved if there is some assurance we will benefit once the conflict has been resolved. Naturally, the quid pro quo in this situation is land, preferential economic treatment, or ideally a combination thereof. Our country would be eager to invest in this region, but we would need some assurance that our wealth is not misplaced or threatened by this situation. We can do much for your country, but we are not particularly eager to lose our investments due to misplaced trust.

As a result, we will need some assurance that our investment in your side of the conflict will guarantee a positive return for both of us. If you are interested in pursuing this path further, we will be open to contact via secure communication channels belonging to the Ministry of Foreign Intelligence.

Our ears are wide open, provided there is something to attract our attention.

Though we are a relatively pacifist nation, The country of Indonesia Serikat (Indonesian States) will send 3 squads of the SpeFIndo Special Forces Peace-keeping force.(24 men and 6 tanks)to guard the border between the countries of Kamunistan and Daytanistan. We also wish to trade with your country.
This support from us will be met ONLY if your country will not turn into a Military Regeime, Dictatorship, or a Communist State in your hands.

The Commonwealth sees no reason why Daytanistan would wish to deny you autonomy, however, if they do than the Commonwealth can offer nuetral ground for the negotiations.
Additionaly we could dispatch a Peace Keeping force to ensure that their are no "incidents" in the near future.
An additional suggestion would be that the future of the disputed territories be decided by the residents of those areas in a referendum cunducted under the eye of the Peace Keepers.

To: All Governments showing interest in Dispatching a PK Force.
From: The Commonwealth of Alsdair MFA.
Since our nations have presented an interest in dispatching a peace keeping force to this point of the world it would be logical to establish some form of co-operation, wouldn't you agree.

I now see that the nation of Kamunistan is an Islamic Extremist/Communist nation. As our country's policy is to wipe out all extremism(Islam, Judaism, Cristian and others) as well as Communism, we have no choice but to not recognise the nation of Kamunistan and withdraw all troops in the area. Soon, we will be sending Envoys to your capital and try to convince you to turn your country into a Democracy. If you recognise democracy, we will send troops to help your nation and help you regain your disputed territories, as well as link them to the main part of your country. If the Envoys are in anyway harmed, imprisoned, or tortured, I will have no choice but to declare war against Kamunistan. War will also start if you refuse to accept Democracy. After all, two mad leaders are worse than one...

The front page article of The Kamunistani Militia's Revolutionary Gazette, 30.9.2007:

In the last few days, two foreign delegations have landed on the airstrip which serves as a makeshift airport in Tirnan. The first of those delegations was an official delegation from the States of Indonesia, who was sent to discuss the benefits of democracy with Supreme Commander Nazir Ibn-Allah Khavasov. The second delegation was made out of independent foreign businessmen from various nationalities, some of which are known to have some influence in the chamber of trade of the Republic of Vetalia.

The first delegation was met by the minister of Foreign Affairs, colonel Marban Manayev, who showed them the training grounds of the Kamuni militia, where high-ranking members of the government train every morning alongside common recruits in hand-to-hand combat. They were later taken to the newly-renamed Abu Bakr Madrassa (previously the Khemal Nugat School of the Young Daytar Workers), where they heard from students and teachers what life was like under the anti-religious Daytanistani regime. Several of the Madrassa's best students expressed their desire to accompany the delegation back to Indonesia to study religion and political science. After watching the construction works for the future University of Tirnan, the delegation returned to the Militia headquarters for an interview with Supreme Commander Khavasov. Khavasov was quoted as saying the following to the Indonesian emissaries:
Kamunistan is a prime example of the high level of democracy attainable in this region. The militia rules the people with their consent and for their benefit. The people serve in the militia, which in turn serve the people.
Our Islamic policies, which your leaders have refered to as religious extremism, are merely for the purposes of granting the Kamuni people the freedom of religion of which they were brutally denied for over seventy years and for the purpose of providing our new state with a firm moral backbone; this is how even in spite of still lacking an efficient government our society does not degenerate into anarchy.
Our society-oriented policies, which your leaders renounced as communism, are not the heartless theaft of property for the use of a privileged class within the state, such as what is practiced by our oppressors, but an extension of Zakat (=charity) to the political level, and an active prevention of heartless and immoral accumulation of wealth by a single individual.
Our people have a newly-developed but firm political consciousness. The communities elect their local clergy, which elect their representatives in the High Council of the People's Mullahs, the body which makes the laws for our young country, and which is responsible for the morality of our nation.
The threats of your leaders, as well as the terms they used to describe this regime, are unecessary, untrue and uncalled for. Are we not a democracy?

The second delegation was met by colonel Abramov, the minister of Trade. They too witnessed the morning training regime of militia members. They also watched the training of the Takaik - the all-women squads responsible for collecting shells and bullets from training grounds and battlefields to be used for recycling. Abramov explained how the militia was in dire need of ammunition and arms, mainly rifles and mortars, strictly for the defense of Kamunistan. They were then taken to a quarry near the winter village of Yra, where large deposits of uranium were recently prospected. They were shown the mining operation and the several freights loaded with uranium ore. Due to uncertainties regarding the deployment and disposition of the Daytanistani forces, the freights could not be moved safely across disputed territories and Daytan lands to be sold out of the country. Abramov promised favorable prices on the uranium for the country that would guarantee the safe passage of the caravan through Daytanistan. The businessmen were then taken back to Tirnan to a traditional Kamuni restuarant (formerly The Daytar Workers' Communal Mess Hall), where they sampled Kamuni delicacies such as camel butter and watched the preformance of traditional Kamuni dancers.

It is the opinion of this newspaper that these visits demonstrate the enormous economic and diplomatic progress made within merely few days of the courageous throwing the foreign shackles. It should serve as a shining example for our brothers in the disputed territories and for other minority groups oppressed by Daytanistan.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: Nazid Khavasov, Enemy of the State, and the Rogue Clerics of the plains in the east of Ashta Province
From: The Supreme Daytan People's Council

Comrade Khavasov et al,

On behalf of the Supreme Daytan People's Council, with whose authority I write this letter, and in the name of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan, I command you at once to discontinue your armed insurrection.

Your counter-revolutionary activities are unpatriotic and cannot be tolerated. They rise from religious superstition and imperialist nationalist sentiments which the workers and peasants of Daytanistan cast aside in the glorious Straw Hat Revolution. Your efforts to impose upon the workers and peasants of the plains between the river Veya and the Kashin-Kashin hills that same sort of religious tyranny imposed upon all the Daytan people by Sheikh Ali Madi and Sheikh Mahmood Mahmood will not go unopposed. Like the students, workers, and peasants, glorious and heroic revolutionaries all, under the leadership of Khemal Nugat, first General Secretary of the Party, who swept aside the superstition and oppression of the Sheikhs, we will form a united front against your counter-revolutionary insurrection, and sweep aside you and your mullahs.

While we reject utterly all of your demands, in order to spare the bloodshed of your sorely misled followers, the Supreme Daytan People's Council has authorised me to offer to you, the so-called High Council of Mullahs, your families, and any other high profile enemies of the state you should name, the opportunity to flee Daytanistan. You will not be pursued in exile and there will be no reprisals against any of your friends or family who remain steadfast in their commitment to the democratic Marxist-Leninist principles which all patriotic Daytans hold dear. If, however, you do not accept the offer of the Supreme Daytan People's Council, you will be treated as the counter-revolutionary enemies of the state you are.

Sincerely,

Farrokh Nugat
General Secretary of the Central Administrative Committee of the Daytan Communist Workers Party
People's Councillor, Supreme Daytan People's Council

OOC: Remember, this is occurring more or less simultaneously for both parties in the conflict.

As hoped, the Vetalian government had carefully engineered the entrance of two seemingly independent delegations in to the country, each representing a different non-governmental organization with different strategic aims. The first, representing the Chamber of Commerce, had been sent to the rebels in Kamunistan, while the second, representing the Socialist Party of Vetalia (an ironic choice, given that every member happened to be a hard-line capitalist like almost all Vetalians), was sent to the loyalist government in Daytanistan.

The offer was made simultaneously to both sides of the conflict, by two different delegations from Vetalia, ostensibly completely ignorant of the other. Of course, in reality, both delegations were from the Ministry of Trade and were secretly communicating the whole time, but the illusion was carefully constructed to appear as if neither party was aware of the other.

"Our offer is this: in exchange for aiding your side, we want land and preferential trade opportunities. Your forces will not only be equipped by our armed forces, but we will send 'mercenaries', really just our troops but not officially operating for the government and the cash to support your operations."

"We know that these concessions may pose a conflict of interest, even an ideological challenge to your government, but the fact is that you need hard currency and equipment, and we can supply it. However, we need a solid return on our investment, one that will compensate for the high risk we are taking here."

"Feel free to draft your offer and we will consider it."

Both parties waited for a response from their respective side and prepared for negotiations. The auction had begun.

DAYTAN PEOPLE'S ARMY

To:
General Madi Dushat, Commander Ashta Province, Daytan People's Army
General Khemal Ali, Commander Kashoun Province, Daytan People's Army

Comrade Generals,

The Supreme Daytan People's Council orders that all forces under your command be set to a state of alert, and move at once to isolate the city of Tirnan and the surrounding region.

A counter-revolutionary militia under the command of Nazid Khavasov has been raised in support of a rebellion by certain Kasumi clerics and their supporters. This insurrection is primarily based between the Veya river and the Kashin-Kashin hill range. Any members of this militia who are encountered outside of this area should be challenged immediately. If they do not surrender peacefully should be neutralised. Any prisoners taken should be arrested and surrendered to officers of the Daytan People's Court for trial as counter-revolutionaries and enemies of the state.

All anti-aircraft batteries should be placed on immediate stand-by. Any aircraft passing over Daytan airspace, excluding the airspace over the Veya river and Kashin-Kashin hill range, which lacks proper authorisation, is to be warned off by radio, failing which, by warning shot, failing which, shot down.

At this time do not encroach into the region under the control of counter-revolutionary militias. Any units under your command currently in that region should be withdrawn. It is highly probable that the leaders of the insurrection will go into exile and the militias will stand down. Failing that, your comrades in other provinces have been ordered to commence massing a force sufficient to deal with the counter-revolutionary militias and any subsequent peace-keeping missions in the region.

Firing squad detachments should be made available to Judges of the Daytan People's Court upon request without delay.

With socialist greetings,

Amad Madi
Supreme People's Commissioner of the Daytan People's Army, Urban Electrification, and Corrective Education

DAYTAN PEOPLE'S NEWS BROADCAST AND NEWSREEL - 30 SEPTEMBER 2007
(excerpt)

An attractive Zirkshe woman in her late twenties sat behind a desk, holding a clipboard of notes. She spoke into an old microphone, whose thick cords spoiled the clean shot of the newscast. On the wall behind her, visible in the left of the shot was the Daytan flag, and on the right was a shot of a Vetalian plane landing in Yerbel. Her Dushtoo elocution was perfect and her voice was melodic but clear. She was, like all women who appeared in the Daytan media, unveiled, although she wore her raven hair in a style which could have been called stylish in the west some ten years earlier, which precluded her from wearing a straw hat. The straw hat was, of course, a revolutionary icon and every patriotic Daytan, man and woman, owned one - at least in the major urban centres where the regime's control was strongest. Out in the regions, especially where old clerics had more sway, unveiled women and straw hats were less common.

"The delegation of the Socialist Party of Vetalia arrived in Yerbel today." the newsreader said, reading the story from cue cards held next to the camera in lieu of the teleprompter, which had broken several months earlier. "After commenting on the obvious successes of Daytan socialism and paying tribute to the prophetic leadership of Comrade Farrokh Nugat, whom they described as a visionary and as possibly the greatest economic and political thinker since Marx, the delegation was presented to the Supreme Soviet of Daytan People's Deputies."

File footage of the Daytan People's Deputies was shown showing the deputies standing and applauding, although who or what they were applauding could not be seen in the brief clip. The shot quickly changed back to the attractive newscaster.

"Chairman Mamood Ashan led the Supreme Soviet in an expression of socialist brotherhood for the delegation, who then met with Comrade Amad Noosh, Supreme People's Commissioner of Foreign Affairs, Trade, Literature, and Sports." the newscaster said. "Comrade Supreme People's Commissioner Noosh discussed trade with the Vetalian delegation."

"In other news, revolutionaries in the Socialist Province of Dalysh have denounced the oppression of..."

Daytan Foreign Affairs Commission Building, Yerbel

Unlike all the other events relayed in the newscast, Amad Noosh really did meet with the Vetalian delegation. He listened in silence to the Vetalian offer, running his hand through his beard as was his habit while he did so. Finally, when they were done, he replied.

"The fact is, comrades, that this insurrection in Kamunistan will be short lived at best." Noosh told them. "The General Secretary just this morning advised me that a most generous offer had been made to the rebel leaders, and that he expected the situation would soon be resolved. We do not feel we need your help, however, we suspect that you are considering making a similar offer to the rebels as you have just made to us. Several foreign nations have, after all, already made ill advised promises of assistance for these rebels."

Noosh offered the members of the delegation a cigarette, before lighting up himself. He inhaled deeply before continuing.

"We would be prepared to negotiate preferential terms of trade for Vetalia if it cut off any negotiations which may or may not be on-going with the Kamuni rebels." Noosh told them. "We would also appreciate it if Vetalia assisted our attempts to discourage other nations from offering assistance to the rebels. Is this agreeable, comrades?"

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

A letter to the nations of the world

Since the time of the first Shah of Daytanistan, Amad Ali Sha (1712 to 1739), the borders of our great nation have stood inviolate. The Democratic Republic of Daytanistan today stands proud and once again asserts its absolute sovereignty over all the territories within its borders.

This sovereignty has never been challenged since the tribes of Daytanistan united under Amad Ali Sha. When Mamood Amad Sha, the last Shah, was executed, and Sheikh Ali Madi assumed government, even then did the borders of Daytanistan stand inviolate. When the tyranny of the sheikhs was ended in the glorious Straw Hat Revolution in 1933, Daytanistan's borders remained still inviolate and its sovereignty absolute.

The Supreme Daytan People's Council, the legitimate executive government of the Democratic Republic of Daytanistan, in the name of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan, has instructed me to re-assert Daytan sovereignty in the light of recent overtures made by certain foreign powers in support of a small group of rebels in the north of our nation. This rebel enclave is not a sovereign nation, and is established entirely within our ancient borders, unchallenged for three hundred years. To support this rebel region is to impinge upon Daytanistan's sovereignty, and as a proud and independent nation, we will not allow or abide it.

From this point on, by order of the Supreme Daytan People's Council, in the name of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan, no foreign aircraft shall be allowed to pass over Daytan airspace without explicit authorisation. That authorisation shall not be granted to any aircraft intending to land in the rebel enclave. Any aircraft which violates our borders will be warned to leave, and if it does not, it will be shot down as a matter of national security.

Further violation of our borders would be an insult to our proud, free and sovereign people, and will not be tolerated.

Sincerely,

Amad Noosh

SOCIALIST PROVINCE OF ASHTA

To: The Proprietor, "The Kamunistani Militia's Revolutionary Gazette", Tirnan

Comrade,

It has recently come to my attention that you have published a newspaper entitled "The Kamunistani Militia's Revolutionary Gazette" without proper authorisation from the Provincial Communications Office.

Under provincial law enacted in 1954 by the Soviet of People's Deputies for the Socialist Province of Ashta, all publications must be first authorised by the Provincial People's Commissioner responsible for Communications. Communications falls under the portfolio to which I was elected, and thus it was necessary for you to obtain my permission prior to publishing your newspaper. You did not obtain that permission, and having now reviewed your newspaper, I can advise you that my permission will not be forthcoming.

I advise you at once to discontinue the publication of the newspaper and any other material until such time as its publication has been approved by me and its content has been approved by my colleague, the Provincial People's Commissioner of Health, Police, Agriculture, Motherland Border Security, Culture, and Thought. If you ignore my advice, you will be prosecuted in the People's Court of the Socialist Province of Ashta, as per provincial law.

From: The Commonwealth of Alsdair

Your recent refusal to admit the international peace keeping force into your country has caused some international concern.
As the name suggests the force is not an "Imperialistic Invasion" but a force dispatched to ensure that the people of Daytanistan and Kamunistan do not suffer needlessly in the current political situation. If you, as you so frequently have claimed to, care about the welfare of your people you should welcome the presence of our forces who would be present for only as long as it is necessary to reach a peaceful conclusion to the conflict.
As such we would ask you to reconsider our proposal far peace talks to be held on neutral territory under the observation of the UN.
Anything else would only serve to strengthen the words of countries less friendly than our own and might lead to international condemnation with all the consequences.

MASS STARVATION FEARED
Tirnan (Central Asian Wire Service) - ‎A famine is feared in the insurgent district of Kamunistan as recent food supplies
transported by militia members or suspected sympathizers are being held back by the Daytan forces encircling the area. Nomadic people whose migratory path is blocked by said forces are migrating to Tirnan for the winter, fearing their cattle will be confiscated by greedy soldiers at the various checkpoints, putting further strain on the Kamuni food supplies. The recent Morality Laws passed by the High Council of the People's Mullahs, banning gambling, drugs and trade in human organs, are also thought to be endangering the region's already fragile economy.
Leaders of the Kamunistani Militia have issued an international plea for humanitarian aid and for sending of foreign experts to assist the revitalization of the economy. Meanwhile, it has been reported that some of the mullahs are advocating the acceptance of the Daytan ultimatum. Debates are still raging in the council as this article is being written.
In other news, a 50-year character for the operation of the uranium mines in Yra and export of said uranium have been offered by Kamuni officials to businessmen of Vitalian nationality, should they provide food, funds and basic armamanet in return. The businessmen could not be reached for comment.

We have breaking news. The Prime Minister Reyhan Yusuf Qasim has just announced that a rescue mission to save the 3 Envoys has been succesful. Also, some 5,000 troops have been placed in the Kamunistani capital, Tirnan.
"Our troops are merely a peace-keeping force", said the Prime Minister, "but if Daytanistan declares war, these troops will work with Kamunistani troops to link their capital with the other two disputed territories as well as gaining land so Kamunistan can be linked with the outside world. Our soldiers will also train Kamunistani troops, so they can be well prepared."
Some in the government say it was too risky, but it worked out just fine. The Prime Minister hopes that Daytanistan will soon recognise Kamunistan, and meet its demands.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: Reyhan Yusuf Qasim, Prime Minister of the Indonesian States

Prime Minister,

The workers and peasants of Daytanistan lament your expression of aggression against the glorious Daytan motherland and its people. The Daytan people are a peace loving people.

Accordingly, I have been authorised by the Supreme Daytan People's Council to disregard the initial Indonesian violation without authorisation of Daytanistan's airspace to send your envoys to the region between the Veya river and the Kashin-Kashin hills. Authorisation is therefore granted for your envoys to leave Daytanistan, however, we cannot allow further unauthorised violation of Daytan airspace.

We trust that this is satisfactory.

Sincerely,

To: The Supreme Daytan People's Council

***

The CSS "Czarna Niedziela" aircraft carrier, fully loaded and with escort ships set course for international waters closest to the area. At the same time diplomats and intelligence officers began operations to see which country bordering Daytanistan might be wiling to allow a land force to set temporary bases there.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: The Commonwealth of Alsdair

The workers and peasants of Daytanistan appreciate the concern the people of Alsdair have for peace in Central Asia, however, the Supreme Daytan People's Council, with whose authority I write this letter, believes that Alsdair is operating under a false apprehension in its offers to send "peace-keeping" forces to the region.

Daytanistan is a peaceful nation and isn't involved in a conflict with any nation. There is no such country as "Kamunistan", and Daytanistan is certainly not involved in an armed conflict with any group. As such, the peace keepers you offer are entirely unnecessary. Likewise, we have no need of a neutral venue for peace talks, as we are not at war with anybody.

The Supreme Daytan People's Council and the workers and peasants of Daytanistan unite in applauding you for your concern, and appreciate that your offer was made in good faith. However, given peacekeepers are unnecessary for the reasons I have described, Daytanistan cannot allow foreign troops, even those of well-intentioned Alsdair, to enter our borders. The Daytan people have no desire to see foreign troops enter their glorious Motherland needlessly, for reasons you can well understand.

Sincerely,

It was the residents of Bhalika Province (also officially known as BhalikaViloyati) who were most seriously concerned with events developing in Daytanistan. Of the hundreds of political parties in Espandorra, quite a few of them operated in Bhalika. The provincial government of President Mammaduli Ganiyev was dominated by the Caspian Party which included as part of its basic platform a call for greater Espandorran involvement in Central Asia. It was one of only four of the eleven Espandorran provincial governments to actually command a majority in the provincial legislature. Ganiyez was thus in the habit of thinking of himself as a rather credible leader, perhaps even more credible than national President Jaime Badillo Acarons who had been given a mandate by the king but had never received the confidence of the Constituent Cortes. It was in the interest of greater regional engagement that Ganiyez expressed to the Daytanistani consulate in Timura his interest in a fact-finding mission-goodwill-visit to Daytanistan.

This offer led almost immediately to a protest by the Islamic Movement of Bhalika which demanded that Ganiyez be immediately removed from office, tried for apostasy and executed. The crowd also demanded that Kamunistan be immediately granted diplomatic recognition, that Bhalika be granted independence, that sharia law be immediately adopted and that alcohol be banned.

A counter-protest was jointly organized by the Espandorran Socialist Workers’ Party, the Workers’ General Union, the Communist Party of Espandorra (nominally illegal), the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification, the Revolutionary Communist Party of Espandorra, the United Maoist Movement, the United Labor Collective, the Justice Social Democratic Party, the Revolutionary Women’s Front and the Popular Democratic Front. The counter-protesters demanded civil laws regarding marriage and family, the abolition of the death penalty, the abolition of the monarchy, the abolition of the death penalty, the abolition of the Civil Guard and unconditional support for the Daytanistani workers’ state.

Violence erupted when several young women from the counter-protest dressed in working-class western garb approached several old women from the IMB group dressed in the traditional hijab and forcibly face-stripped them, violently tearing off their traditional garb and exposing their hair and faces. The equally elderly husband of one of the women immediately struck one of the young assailants with a cane. At that point, members of both groups began to fight in earnest. The counter-protesters had nearly driven off the original protesters when a new fight between partisans of the Revolutionary Communist Party and partisans of the United Maoist Movement broke out within the counter-demonstration itself. This led to near total chaos until the police arrived and rather brutally broke up the entire mess, arresting several dozen people and injuring more than a few.

Ganiyez didn’t draw attention to the violence or take much note of it. No one had been killed. Therefore, by the standards of Espandorran politics over the last decade, it was hardly a serious altercation. In any event, it was a tad embarrassing. He simply stood by his initial proposal. With the permission of the central government, which he had, it was usually quite acceptable for a sub-national leader to be allowed a non-committal but potentially productive role in diplomacy. He certainly had as much right as the fake socialists from Vetalia.

To Daytanistan
Although we have gotten our envoys back, the current situation troubles me. It appears as if your government is compleatly denying the fact that Kamunistan exists. For your information, Kamunistan does exist, and we will do everything we can to make Daytanistan (and the rest of the world) recognise the existance of the nation of Kamunistan. This is your last chance. If Daytanistan still refuses to accept Kamunistan's independance and requirements, drastic measures will be needed.

Our country has been doing all we can to help your nation. To further help you, we have brought many transport and cargo ships containing 15,000 soldiers, and many crates of food to help your nation, to the nearest source of international water. If Daytanistan still refuses to accept your independance, we will send all crates of food and escorts to Kamunistan. If Daytanistan does accept your independance, and let planes go inside their airspace, we will send all crates of food to Kamunistan also.

We wish your country good luck

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: Reyhan Yusuf Qasim, Prime Minister of the Indonesian States

Prime Minister,

I regret to inform you that the United Nations, just like the workers and peasants of Daytanistan, and the Supreme Daytan People's Council, with whose authority I write this letter, recognises no nation named Kamunistan.

"Kamunistan", as you call it, is a region of the Socialist Province of Ashta, a province of Daytanistan. Ever since the reign of the first Shah of a united Daytanistan, this region, between the Veya river and the Kashin-Kashin hills, has always been part of Daytanistan. "Kamunistan" as you call it, is not an independent nation, nor is it even a complete province. It is simply a region of Ashta. Its citizens are Daytan and have no other nationality. They have all the rights and freedoms of all the workers and peasants of the Democratic Republic of Daytanistan. They have always been our brothers in our united Motherland.

It is true that certain religious fundamentalist elements in that region now assert the independence of what you have called "Kamunistan". However, the Supreme Daytan People's Council cannot and will not accept the words of a few clerics, elected by and representing nobody, as being a sufficient justification for the secession of a region which has always been part of our Motherland. The Daytan people can no more accept this than your people could accept a city in the Indonesian States declaring itself an independent nation.

The grievances of the clerics, which you have described as their "requirements", are being considered by the Supreme Daytan People's Council and by a special committee from the Supreme Soviet of Daytan People's Deputies. Should it be determined that some few of the grievances of these religious extremists are legitimate, the appropriate measures will be taken to redress them. That is as it should be in a democratic nation.

What is not legitimate in a democratic nation, however, is to illegally establish an armed gang in order to take over a city. That is what the clerics of this region you call "Kamunistan" have done, make no mistake. Having illegally seized power, they have declared that the region under their control is independent from the rest of the country. To secede in order to impose Sharia law on the workers and peasants of the city of Tirnan and its surrounding area is not legitimate in a democratic society. To impose fundamentalist religious law on the free people of the region, most of whom have no religion, is indefensible. I am frankly surprised that you, as the leader of a great nation, would support this armed gang of religious extremist thugs in their efforts to establish a theocracy.

Nevertheless, as Daytanistan is a peaceful nation, rather than respond with overwhelming military force, as we could have done immediately, the Supreme Daytan People's Council has been negotiating with these clerics and their supporters in order to bring matters to a peaceful conclusion. We are striving to restore law and order, not to mention the rights and liberties of our free people, in this troubled region. We are doing so peacefully, and we will continue to do so peacefully. Your threats of "drastic measures" are not just unreasonable, but they are unhelpful to this healing process.

If the Indonesian States would like to help, it would be best if that help came in the form of humanitarian aid which Daytan authorities could distribute our people currently held captive in Tirnan and its surrounds by this fanatical band of theocratic thugs. In their gross disregard for the workers and peasants of the region, and in their stubborn pride and superstition, the clerics in command of the illegal militia occupying the region you call "Kamunistan" are allowing the people to slowly starve through their incompetent mismanagement. If you would like to deliver humanitarian aid in the form of food and medical supplies, we can arrange it to be transported to the trouble region from the major freight airport at Kirzan, in the Socialist Province of Jalaalalaal.

Sincerely,

As you should know from previous letters, i have food and medical supplies ready to be sent to Tirnan in "the troubled region within Ashta." We wish these supplies to be sent, not to the airport in Kirzan, but directly to The airfield in Tirnan. These supplies could have been sent immidietly, but Daytanistan has closed its borders. We are very upset with Daytanistan when calling the Kamunistani militia a "fanatical band of theocratic thugs." But, like yourself, we are a peaceful, pacifist nation which does not want to assault the border of Daytanistan like we could have broken through many times. So, I would like to meet with you and hold talks. Preferably in the nation of Indonesia Serikat or a neutral country. I hope we can discuss not only Kamunistan, but also other subjects as well. My last term in office is ending soon and the next leader might have a different perspective of the current affair.

It was probably one of the year's last sunny days, and the Kamuni militia has done wisely to select such a day for an arms display. Militia members and sympathizers were marching along one of Tirnan's largest race tracks, which like the rest of them was closed after the recent ban on gambling. First on schedule fine display of military discipline by the ununiformed brigades, who, the narrator has declared, were willing to charge into battle unarmed so that their comerades might be shielded from the Daytan bullets. Then came roaring by the few vehicles commandeered by the militia, which, while obviously outdated by modern standards, were described by the narrator as "the long-reaching mechanical arms of our might". The vehicles were full of young children waving the Kamunistani flags to the wild cheers of the audience. Then came the militia's regulars, clad in light green uniform and carrying whatever armament they could scrap - mostly handguns, non-automatic rifles and submachine guns. They shot a few times in the air, and the narrator reported enthusiastically to the crowd that the targets that were set in advance on the roof of the militia's headquarters were all shot with incredible accuracy. The cheers of the crowd escalated as the rank and file were joined by the high-ranking officials, who formed a circle around the Supreme Commander Khavasov. And as they were marching and chanting phrases from the holy Quran advocating righteousness and piety, the narrator read from Khavasov's recent address to the nation.
We, the Kamuni people, are eternally grateful to our friends and supporters abroad. Let them know that we may be besieged by the same scoundrels who wish to appear as saints by tricking the friends of justice into delivering needed supplies into their own greedy hands while trying to starve us to death; that we may be scorned, ignored and denied access to the outside world; that we may be presented with hollow threats - but we will never surrender our natural and god-given freedom to the godless conquerors ever again. If the Daytan occupation regime will not listen to reason and will not agree to lift the siege and begin fruitful peace negotiations, the earth will burn underneath their feet, for they fight against God and Justice.
After the officers, the stamping of hooves preceded the newly formed cavalry, manned by some of the many nomads who found themselves forced into Tirnan and by the jockeys who were now out of job. They spread out across the track and showed some admirable feats of skill before gathering into a formation and stomping on a cardboard model of the Daytan capital Yerbel. "Our secret ancestral weapon", said the narrator, referring to the long tradition of horsemanship in the northern provinces of Daytanistan, "is demonstrating what it might do should we be forced into a corner by our heartless enemy". The military force was laughable compared to modern, organized armies, but it was enough to rally the crowd into chanting religious and patriotic slogans, cheering for Khavasov and for the militia, and forgetting, if only for a few hours, about the approaching harsh winter.

------

As indispensable as the cavalry forces were to the meager Kamuni forces, several dozens of them left Tirnan that very night under the cover of darkness. No one outside the Mullahs and the high-ranking officers were told of their mission, but everyone hoped they will manage to use their superior maneuverability and knowledge of the terrain in order to slip past the Daytan checkpoints undetected and begin their long and arduous individual journeys. Though their mission was costly for the fragile economy of Kamunistan, it paid back its cost in the one resource that was currently most needed - hope. One of the riders, however, was much less skilled than the others. Indeed, he was no horseman at all. But for mullah Ibrahim such things didn't matter; after all, he wanted to get caught.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: Reyhan Yusuf Qasim, Prime Minister of the Indonesian States

Prime Minister,

The Supreme Daytan People's Council cannot allow the supplies to which you refer to be transported directly to Tirnan due to security concerns surrounding the situation there. The group of religious fanatics who have criminally seized power from the local workers and peasants may use the armed bands under their control to take command of the humanitarian aid you have so generously offered. Rather than be distributed amongst the people, this vital aid could be used to blackmail the loyal workers and peasants of Tirnan and its surrounding region to join the insurrection, or could simply be hoarded for the exclusive use of the illegal militias.

The only way to guarantee that the aid will reach those genuinely in need is if it can be distributed by the proper Daytan authorities, which can best be accomplished by the delivery of any and all foreign aid to Kirzan. I repeat the Supreme Daytan People's Council's previous authorisation for aid-carrying aircraft to enter Daytan airspace and land in Kirzan, and only Kirzan.

As for your most generous invitation for me to travel to your nation to discuss various matters, I would be only too happy to accept as the representative of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan. However, I will be unable to accept your invitation to Indonesia Serikat until the present situation is resolved, which the Supreme Daytan People's Council still expects to happen soon.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: The Commonwealth of Alsdair

Excellency,

The Supreme Daytan People's Council has instructed me, on behalf of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan, to inform you that the United Nations does not recognises the existence of such a nation as "Kamunistan". This naturally makes the religious fanatics who have illegally disrupted the democratic government of the region in question hostile towards the United Nations just as they are hostile towards Daytanistan.

Therefore, for the security of United Nations personnel, we cannot allow them to enter this troubled region until after the band of religious fundamentalist criminals who have presently over turned the rule of law in Tirnan and its surrounds. It is highly likely that members of the extremist religious militias would take such UN personnel hostage and attempt to blackmail their home nations, if not outright murder them.

In recognition of the previous situations in certain disreputable nations to which you alluded in your letter, however, the Supreme Daytan People's Council will allow the aid you offer to be distributed by (unarmed) United Nations personnel. For the security of those personnel, however, this cannot happen until the present situation is resolved and Daytan authorities can vouch for the personal security of the UN personnel. The Supreme Daytan People's Council must therefore, for the time being, continue to decline your requests to land in Tirnan, or to fly over it, or the plains around it. Alsdair may send aid under the auspices of the UN when the security situation has been resolved and Daytan authorities move in to deal with the humanitarian crisis created by the gross negligence, if not down right indifference to human suffering, of these so-called holy men who lead the brigands who have overturned regional soviets and courts of law.

Daytanistan Decides:
Renegade Mullah Captured at Provincial Border

The Issue

General Khemal Ali, Commander of the Daytan People's Army in the Kashoun Province reports that the man captured yesterday by his forces has been positively identified as Mullah Ibrahim, a member of the Kamunistani Council of Mullahs, who has fled the rebel-controlled area in fear for the well-being of his family in Marak. He demands that he and his family be given free passage to the Espandorran border. He has also let us in on the rebels' current covert actions. According to his report, about 50-80 female members of the rebel militia, bearing arms and uniforms underneath their traditional garb to avoid detection, are attempting to slip past the Daytan military in order to organize sleeper cells and to sow discontent within the all of the disputed territories. He could only give us a handful of names and descriptions, but due to the very concealing nature of the traditional garb, these won't do much good unless we order a more thorough inspection of the people leaving and entering the rebel-controlled area. This, however, might further alienate the population.
Before such measures can be taken, the fate of the renegade mullah must be decided.

The Debate

"Even though we could probably squeeze more information out of the mullah, letting him and his family safely leave the country might encourage the defection of more of collegues.", claims provincial official Khemal Shep. "This in turn might lead to the insurgents losing their popular support, making the resotration of direct Daytanistani rule considerably easier."
[Accept]

"The mullah seems to be quite the family man", snickers intelligence officer Ahmat Bhalish. "I'm sure that if we only apply a little more pressure, we can squeeze a pro-government fatwa (=religious verdict) out of him, which would come in handy when attempting to regain the support of those superstitious northerners".
[Accept]

"For all we know, sending this renegade cleric into our hands was a very straightforward attempt made by the fanatics to either infiltrate the ranks of our propoganda service or to make contact with sympathetic factions in Espandorra", warns head of counter-intelligence Fakhat Mabrin. "We should interrogate this mullah as thoroughly and as painfully as possible, and then execute him as a warning to other would-be James Bonds. It is a well-known fact that Kamuni spies are lurking everywhere, and such a move would do well to deter them."
[Accept]

Another official, a strange man with a funny accent and a fake-looking moustache, whom you don't remember ever inviting to this meeting, has another suggestion: "This mullah looks like a nice person. This goes to show that the glorious Kamunistani Self-Defense Militia Forces and the High Council of the People's Mullahs are actually a bunch of very nice guys. Couldn't we just give in to their demands and coexist peacefully?"
[Accept]

The Government Position

The government has yet to formalize a position on this issue.

If you wish, you may simply execute the speakers for displaying a dangerous lack of solidarity by daring to voice their own opinions.

Though it is probably unecessary, let us remind you again that the approaching humanitarian crisis is a direct consequence of the chokehold of the Daytan army on our lands, bent on starving us to death or making us again dependant on their party-controlled economy. Ignore their feeble declarations about being interested in regional peace and stability: whereas we are fully prepared to participate in any peace talks which will take place in Alsdair or any other neutral nation, they have repeatedly refused to initiate any parallel diplomatic move.
Another lie spread by the Daytan occupation regime is that the current ban on flights over Daytan and Kamuni airspace has been initiated in order to defend Daytanistan from an aerial attack by our forces. It is true that the faith of our soldiers indeed soars to the high heavens, and the godless Daytan army will do well to fear it; the bodies of our soldiers, however, remain earthbound as the Kamunistani Self-Defense Militia does not have anything that resembles an airforce. The ban on flights serves only one purpose, and that is to block any exchange of goods and more importantly information between our land and yours, and as such you should insist on its immediate removal. We also urge you to deploy the peacekeeping force on our borders as soon as possible before any sort of military conflict breaks out.
We again express our gratitude for your commitment to justice and to regional stability, and invite your envoys to visit Tirnan and gain a first-hand impression of the situation rather than remain dependant on the inaccurate Daytan propoganda.

Best regards, etc.

FROM: Colonel Marban Manayev, minister of Foreign Affairs, the Kamunistani Self-Defense Militia Forces

In the name of Allah the forgiving and the merciful,

We, the oppressed Kamuni people, are surprised to hear of your involvement in our current conflict with Daytanistan. Whatever your reasons for supporting our oppressors might be, we can assure you that sending your forces to this region is a needless waste of your resources. If it is economic gains you seek, you will not gain it by escelating the level of hostility, as the Daytan army is known to arm itself only with weapons manufactured by the Daytan military industries. If it is a commercial position you wish to secure in this region, you will not do so by openly allying yourself with a single nation. If the reason for your involvement is to send a message to dissidents active within your lands, your forces will be put to a better use against them rather than against us. The Kamunistani Self-Defense Militia Forces has no connections with foreign liberation armies, and has no desire to form such connections unless international diplomacy and common interests forces us to do so. We sincerly urge you to reconsider your involvement in this conflict, and invite you to send unarmed envoys to a fact-finding mission in Tirnan, to counter any lies on the nature of our resistance spread by the Daytan regime.

Signed, etc.

In the name of Allah the forgiving and the merciful,

It has come to my attention that you have sent an emissary on a fact-finding mission in Daytanistan to learn more of our struggle for independence. We warn you that the information you will receieve from the Daytan authorities is likely to be distorted, inaccurate, or downright fictional. Should your envoys pass the Daytan checkpoints which unlawfuly block us from the outside world, the militia is willing to vouch for their safety as they travel through the small area currently under our control.

The Daytan People's Army was not necessarily the most modern military institution in the world. Even still, it compared favourably to the Kamuni militia. Its troops were uniformed and had standardised equipment. A rifleman's primary weapon was a KNB-47 (Khemal Nugat Balishta 1947), an assault rifle which the training guides said was designed personally by the first General Secretary of the Central Administrative Committee of the Daytan Communist Workers Party, Khemal Nugat himself. In truth the KNB-47 was a foreign design, produced by a handful of old fashioned and highly inefficient factories about Daytanistan. After the rifle, most observers would next notice the very simple green uniforms, off-set with stars, hammers and sickles stitched onto the chest over the heart and the upper arms. Insignia indicating rank were stitched next to these ideological symbols. The uniforms were made both in factories in Daytanistan's cities and by seamstress collectives in villages across the country. The uniform was completed by a "steel" helmet painted green, although the quality of steel used in army helmets varied dramatically for reasons the unfortunate soldiers wearing at them could only speculate. Many soldiers, finding themselves issued with helmets not worth the name, discarded their helmets and wore patriotic straw hats or no head wear at all.

They had come to guard the various passes, roads, rivers, and other such natural points of entry into the plains of Kamunistan in ancient looking trucks with wooden open-air trays, with benches for soldiers to sit on inside. Despite their appearance, the trucks were, for the most part, all new, having been built only in the last few years. They were built to the same set of plans and specifications and with the same building processes as had first been agreed upon by the centralised economic planners in 1962 when Daytanistan first started to build its own automobiles. It was the only truck design in the country in fact, military or civilian (civilian variants were painted black instead of green and had no benches to carry troops in the back), and thus it was likely the only type of truck in Kamunistan too.

As the Kamuni cavalrymen approached Daytan camps, it was the sight of a few of these large trucks which probably first gave the camps away. Daring to venture a little closer they would have seen half a dozen tents, some camp fires, and soldiers joking amongst each other. There were also sentries and patrols, of course, most of whom had torches to help them see in the night. At night time in particular such patrols had nervous trigger fingers, and were inclined to ask questions second if at all. The sound of a KNB-47 firing in the distance would gain the attention of even the rowdiest soldiers back at the camp and soon bring a truck full of troops to see what the problem was.

Inevitably, some of the Kamuni cavalry would slip through the Daytan military blockade under the cover of darkness. Mullah Ibrahim, however, stood no chance of getting past the Daytan soldiers. He was apprehended by sentries and brought back to the nearest camp, where he was gagged and tied up with rope by the soldiers while their officer radioed his commander to inform him that they had a prisoner. Half a dozen soldiers then bundled the mullah into the back of a truck, which they mounted themselves, rifles at the ready, before heading off to base to hand their prisoner over.

Two hours later, they arrived at a permanent looking base, and the soldiers took their prisoner to a dark cell with no windows, where he was deposited and left. Some time later, the exact length of which was difficult to judge due to the lack of windows, the cell door was unlocked and two army interrogators entered. They were armed only with truncheons, but just outside the cell door the mullah could see a soldier carrying a KNB-47.

"What is your name, comrade?" one of the interrogators asked as the other pulled the mullah's gag off.

Daytan People's Army
INTERNAL COMMUNICATION

FROM: First Sergent Karchek Ali of the 13th Mechanized Infantry (The Cotton-Weavers Regiment), Kashoun province
TO: General Khemal Ali, Commander of the Daytan People's Army in the Kashoun province
SUBJECT: Interrogation Report
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: ORANGE

Socialist greetings of solidarity and love for the motherland to you, you disgusting flea-ridden swineherd.

As reported, our forces have captured one of the rogue clerics as he was trying to leave the rebel-controlled area. In the perliminary interrogation he claimed to be a member of the Kamuni council of mullahs, which makes him almost as much of a traitorous scumbag as you are. He also provided information regarding other Kamuni camel-humpers such as yourself trying to sneak past our posts and create more trouble for the lazy dimwits you call your subordinates. Since he was obviously lying, a more intensive interrogation took place, and the following resources were consumed. I request adequate replacements to be sent immediately - they will be much needed if you or more of your friends pass through our post:

One rubber hose, 2 meters long
25 litres of water
Half a litre of oil
Half a litre of cooking oil
One box of matches
200 grams of salt
Also, if you have ever had any love for our dear departed mother, add a crate of vodka to this list.

The prisoner repeated his previous statement, and we were prepared to further intensify his treatment. However, we began to receive reports about the capture of other insurgents of the type he has described, and two of those prisoners have identified our prisoner as mullah Ibrahim and corroborated his statement. The other prisoners are proving more difficult to interrogate - they claim to be married women, and, well, all my soldiers are locals, and you know how primitive and stubborn they can be. I will arrange to transfer the prisoners to somewhere more enlightened, where grown men aren't mortally afraid of veiled women. If this finally gets you your promotion, remember your loving half-brother.

I will continue to keep my ears and eyes wide open. It's not like there'll be anything else to do in this god-forsaken hell-hole until you send the vodka.

With socialist greetings and wishes of you catching cholera,
Karchek

OOC: A journalist would be permitted to travel to Daytanistan but would always be accompanied by government officials and Daytan People's Army personnel. He or she would be allowed nowhere near Kamunistan. Any footage would have to be handed over to Daytan officials and be subject to censorship before being allowed to be transmitted to the journalist's employer. Only on these terms would the Daytan authorities agree to a foreign journalist coming to Daytanistan.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF DAYTANISTAN

To: Mr Johann van Dyke, Prime Minister of the Indonesian States

Prime Minister,

The Supreme Daytan People's Council passes on its congratulations to you on your assuming the position of chief of state, succeeding Mr Qasim, with whom I had previously corresponded. The workers and peasants of Daytanistan hope that your premiership will bring a period of new cooperation between our peoples.

In response to your inquiry, the Supreme Daytan People's Council has offered to negotiate with leaders of the armed gang of religious fanatics who have overthrown the legitimate government of Tirnan and its surrounds. Thus far, the brigands have refused to negotiate. Their demands were utterly unacceptable. They do not seek autonomy within Daytanistan, they seek separation from our glorious Motherland. They seek to impose religious tyranny on the workers and peasants of the area under the control of their thugs, especially upon the women, whom they are forcing back into purdah. We would not be surprised if the patriotic women who refuse are stoned by these monsters. Since the Straw Hat Revolution saw the overthrow of Sheikh Mamood Mamood in 1932, the women of Daytanistan have been free from such religious restriction.

Even if the terrorists in Tirnan were seeking autonomy within Daytanistan, we could not give it to them on terms they would accept. The Supreme Daytan People's Council will never betray the civil rights and liberties of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan by allowing a theocratic regional government to impinge on the freedoms you and I take for granted.

The Supreme Daytan People's Council remains willing to negotiate. It is, however, not willing to allow this armed band of petty thugs and would-be dictators to secede from the Motherland, and neither is it willing to allow it to restrict the rights and liberties of the workers and peasants of the region, especially the women. It will not betray the democratic socialist principles on which the Democratic Republic of Daytanistan was founded by the visionary first General Secretary Khemal Nugat, that famous thinker and philosopher, that great leader, warrior, poet, and patriot. Thousands of patriotic revolutionaries died so that never again in Daytanistan would a women be forced into purdah. The Supreme Daytan People's Council will not allow that sacrifice to be in vain!

Sincerely,

Amad Noosh

Marak, Socialist Province of Ashta
Democratic Republic of Daytanistan (Government controlled)
In the middle of the night, even while Mullah Ibrahim was being interrogated after his apprehension, several cars pulled up in front of his family home. All of them were black Mamood Nugat-1972 Saloons - officially designed in 1972 by then General Secretary Mamood Nugat (in fact the design was licensed from the Trabant 500). The MN-1972 was the only sedan manufactured in Daytanistan, and was available in three colours - Black, "Worker Grey", and "Socialist Red". Several other similar cars manufactured in other socialist countries were available in Daytanistan as well - by far the most popular was the Zagreb People's Car made in the former Serene Democratic Fiefdom of Uncle Noel (now Otiacicoh). Nevertheless, a black MN-1972 was one of the more common sights on the streets of Marak, and thus ordinarily one or even several would arise no suspicion. Black MN-1972s arriving outside a house in the dead of night, however, was another story, and any neighbours who may have witnessed it quickly pulled their curtains closed and prayed that they didn't hear a knock on their door.

The knock, of course, was on the door of Mullah Ibrahim's family. A few minutes later everybody had been moved out of bed, still in their night clothes, and into the cars, which then sped away into the night as fast as their two stroke 600cc engines could carry them. They were told that they were being taken into "protective custody", that the matter was urgent, and that they had no time to get dressed or pack any belongings.

Not long after settling into their "protective custody" in the police station, police interrogators began a one-on-one interrogation of the Mullah's wife/wives and any children over the age of 10. They were required to detail any contact the Mullah had with his family since the Kamuni militia had seized power in Tirnan, and all contact any of them had with other clerics or Kamuni independence supporters in Marak. The interrogators were keen to point out that the Mullah's life may very well depend on their full cooperation. In addition to this, further threats, sleep deprivation, beatings and water torture were all employed in the face of any apparent contradictions or lack of cooperation.

Any leads were immediately acted upon in similar style.

Democratic Republic of Daytanistan (Government controlled)
2:13am
A black MN-1972 pulled up in front of a house in the provincial capital around the same time as the ones which arrived to question Mullah Ibrahim's family. The secret police inside disembarked and banged on the door until a man's voice could be heard saying "Coming!" from the inside. An overweight middle-aged man in a dressing gown shortly appeared. When he saw the secret police he went pale, but seemed more resigned than frightened.

"Comrade, are you Petran Medi, People's Commissioner of Typewriters and Typeface Standardisation, Regional Soviet Oversight, Local Soviet Oversight, and Dismantlement of Organised Religion?" asked the secret police officer.

"You know I am, yes." Petran Medi replied.

"Comrade People's Commissioner, please get dressed and come with us." the secret police officer said. Clearly the People's Commissioner warranted more respect than the mullah's family.

"What's this about, comrade?" Petran Medi demanded.

"Please, Comrade Commissioner, get dressed and come with us, without a fuss." the officer replied.

"I see." Medi replied. "I'll be a few minutes."

Medi went back to his bedroom and started to get changed quietly. Despite his care not to wake her, his wife had stirred because of the knocking on the door and was now awake.

"Petran, what's going on?" she asked, still half asleep.

"I have to go." he answered simply.

"At this hour? When will you be coming back?" she asked, sitting up.

"At this hour... I am not sure whether I will ever be coming back." he admitted.

2:57am
Petran Medi and the secret police who had arrested him arrived at their destination - an unoccupied office in the Daytan People's Court courthouse. They turned on the lights and offered the People's Commissioner a drink of vodka (which he accepted), before handing him a letter. Medi sipped his vodka and opened the letter with trembling hands. It was only short, and he read it quickly.

SUPREME DAYTAN PEOPLE'S COUNCIL

To: Petran Medi, People's Commissioner of Typewriters and Typeface Standardisation, Regional Soviet Oversight, Local Soviet Oversight, and Dismantlement of Organised Religion for the Socialist Province of Ashta

Comrade People's Commissioner,

As you are aware, a group of clerics in Tirnan has combined with certain members of the local and regional soviets to overthrow the government in Tirnan and its surrounds and declare independence.

This would not have been possible had you, in your capacity as People's Commissioner of of Typewriters and Typeface Standardisation, Regional Soviet Oversight, Local Soviet Oversight, and Dismantlement of Organised Religion, performed your duties with due competence, especially with regards to Regional Soviet Oversight, Local Soviet Oversight, and Dismantlement of Organised Religion.

As you were clearly grossly negligent in your duties, the Supreme Daytan People's Council has determined your commission and recommended to the Daytan People's Court that you be charged as a Counter-Revolutionary.

In light of your past service to the Motherland and to the Party, I have personally recommended that a lesser sentence be imposed by the court.

"Thank you, Comrade General Secretary. I will put a stop to the laxness permitted by my predecessor, I swear. And I will make the city of Marak my very top priority, Comrade General Secretary. Thank you, Comrade General Secretary." gushed Amad Alekshanda, the newly appointed People's Commissioner of Typewriters and Typeface Standardisation, Regional Soviet Oversight, Local Soviet Oversight, and Dismantlement of Organised Religion for the Socialist Province of Ashta. He hung up the telephone receiver and took a deep breath in, before looking to the Under Commissioners awaiting his instructions.

"We are going to make Marak our temporary base of operations. Get my car and driver. By the end of today I want to be sitting in an office in Marak." Alekshanda started. "There are laws against purdah and religious paraphernalia. Enforcement of them, especially in the northern mountains and its towns, has been poor at best. We will now turn that around. The General Secretary has told me that Kamuni agents are using the burka as a disguise to stop their identification, which makes this especially urgent. In Marak and in all other areas claimed by the Kamuni rebels, I want the ordnances against purdah enforced so that the secret police have a better chance of doing their jobs."

"We must also act to break the power of the clerics before they see the people in these areas rise up to join the people of Tirnan." Alekshanda said. "Officials will confiscate all copies of the Qu'ran and any other religious works. Copies of the Communist Manifesto with Special Foreword by Khemal Nugat are to distributed in its place. Presume that any work in Arabic is religious in nature unless the official knows better."

THE KAMUNI MILITIA'S REVOLUTIONARY GAZETTE

The Heartless Beast Captures a Holy Man
Like an unarmed missionary travelling alone into a heathen land, seeking to bring truth and light to untamed people, trusting in his faith alone to bring him through the hardships of the journey, so did mullah Ibrahim went alone to negotiate peace with our oppressors and show them the light and truth of our ways. The beast did not listen to his reason, and they took him captive. We do not know what sort of horrible tribulations he must be going through in his dark prison cell. In the Friday sermon, Imams all over Tirnan called for his rapid liberation.
In a resolution yesterday, the government decided to add an 11th clause to our demands from the Daytan oppressors: the safe return of mullah Ibrahim and his family. Let them know that we will not rest and surrender until that bravest and holiest of men returns home.
In the meantime, so that the order in the High Council of the People's Mullahs may not be upset, Supreme General Khavasov has kindly taken upon himself the burden of filling mullah Ibrahim's seat in the council, even though he lacks a thorough religious education. The editor of this gazette thanks allheartedly our hero, the liberator, the bringer of peace and the champion of democracy for this selfless act of self-sacrfice.

More Dissappearances in Marak
To those of you who have inquired about your relatives in Marak, know that the iron fist of the Daytan police is raiding more and more homes of innocent citizens whose only crime is not to abandon the way of the prophet. The beast is still not satisfied with all the blood it has shed, and has began committing blasphemies such as burning the Quran in public. We urge any of our readers who has contacts in Marak to advise them to hide selected surrahs within pages of the manifesto of the communist party in order to avoid needless capture and death by the hand of the Daytan police.
Rest assure, citizens of young Kamunistan, your family and friends are not lost to you. According to a high-ranking militia officer, the homes of the believers in Marak are emptying faster than the interrogation chambers are being filled. Believers are fleeing the town to the remote villages in the mountain range between Marak and the northeastern border. They are armed and strong of will, and will join our struggle to liberate Marak and bring peace and victory to the oppressed people of Kamunistan.
According to the same officer, no contact has been made with our brothers in the mountain so far, but our emissaries are riding as fast as the wind to reach them and allow them to join the ranks of our militia.

Weather Forecast - Harsh Winter Expected
According to a foreign meteorological service, a sharp drop in the temperature is expected within the next few days, and heavy rainfall is expected already at the beginning of next week. It is only a question of time before snow will start falling on our brave brothers in the mountains of Marak; we wish them and you, our readers, a safe winter.
In an address to the nation, Supreme General Khavasov has ordered that mosques in Tirnan will function as soup kitchens after the midday prayer. He once again urged those who has not done so already to limit themselves to one meal a day, and to avoid hoarding food supplies. Later in the winter, the soup kitchens are expected to distribute the foreign aid which is, according to Khavasov, rapidly forthcoming. If we all join the effort, he concluded, we will make it through the winter unharmed.

An 8-Year Old Wins Our Patriotic Poem Contest
As promised in the last issue of this gazzette, the winner of our contest will be announced. It is a 4-line poem by 8-year old Ahmat Laksta named "Hit the Serpent on its Head", which vividly describes the terror of the Daytan occupation regime, and urges the readers to a proactive revolt by abandoning the Daytan culture and a return to traditional values and costumes.
As winner of our contest, he will be allowed to join the Supreme General on his daily training routine. We thank all the readers who has sent their wonderful poems, and hope that enough paper will be left in Tirnan to publish the winning poem and the runner-ups on our next issue.

We thank you again for your help in our just struggle.

Today, the Prime Minister is forced to resign by the Pro-Daytanistan supporters. The protests have been going on for the last 3 days (except the first day of Eid). There have been a total of 35 deaths and hundreds injured.
The new leader, Abdullah Ibrahim, declared the capital Jakarta andnow completely changes Indonesia's side in the Daytanistani crisis.

"We feel that no country can just declare independance, and Indonesia will now support Daytanistan and try to do all we can do to stop the little terrorist faction from declaring their own country"said PM Abdullah Ibrahim.

Comrade,

I refer to you to my previous letter sent on 30 September, in which I advised you to discontinue the publication of "The Kamunistani Militia's Revolutionary Gazette" or face prosecution.

It has come to my attention that you have ignored that advice.

Consequently I am writing to advise you that you will be prosecuted in the People's Court of the Socialist Province of Ashta, as per provincial law.

Mammaduli Ganiyev was smiling as he stepped from his plane in Yerbel. He was a middle-aged whose jet black hair was starting to be peppered with spots of grey. He had managed to maintain a rather lean figure, the result of years of regular exercise. He carried himself with a certain quiet dignity although there was a certain spark in his eyes, a sign of a keen intellect and a questioning mind. He was dressed simply, in the same drab three-piece suit he wore almost everywhere.

REBELLION!!!

Today 20 troops that were ordered to execute a pro-Democracy leader In Jakarta turned their backs and killed a 3-star general and 2 officers. Afterwards, they freed the pro-Democracy prisoners and broke into the armory. Pro-Democracy rebels and the Army traitors took control of the south of Jakarta after only 45 minutes, and made the Pondok Indah Mall their headquarters. Even civilians attacked the Communists, going to the armory and getting Ak-47's and helmets. Women and Children were evacuated out of Jakarta and brought to a safer place in the countryside

To: Mr Abdullah Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Indonesia Serikat

Prime Minister,

On behalf of the workers and peasants of Daytanistan, the Supreme Daytan People's Council has asked me to thank you for your courageous leadership in the face of religious fundamentalist terror and insurrection across the world.

Indonesia Serikat's change of heart in regards to the sovereign borders of our Democratic Republic is a most welcome development, the news of which has filled the workers and peasants of our country with joy.

We trust that your nation's new found resolve will not be shaken by the traitors and rebels in your midst who, we understand through media reports, have now unleashed violence upon your streets.

Many scenes like this are common in the Indonesian States. The Pro-Democracy groups always send spies into the Communist government. Since there is little security, it's easy to get in. Once they get enough information, they usually place a bomb inside the car, and then place an ambush, shooting from the trees on the side from the street. Soon, the Rebels say, the Communists will fall. After the Communists in Indonesia, Daytanistan will be next. Then Israel, but thats a different story....

Three knocks on the door. The Former president checks his watch.

"My god, its three o'clock" he mumbles to himself

Opening the door, he sees a man in his early 30's, dressed in a seemingly-old raincoat and with a torn umbrella.

"May I come in, sir?" he askes
"Ah, yes. I guess so. You seem familiar, what do you need?"
"You've probably seen me on TV alot, im a news reporter from the ISEC. Do you mind if I have some coffee?"
"You may, but first, what brings you here?"
"As you might know, The ISEC has been planning to go inside Daytansitan for a while..."

"I would like it if you could send some military to guard us, you know for protection. Its not safe there, Mr. President"
" Nowhere is safe, and I suggest that you don't go into Daytanistan. If you get captured, I will be forcecd to go to war." The president waited a few moments, "When I'm back in power"
"But sir, Indonesia would greatly need this information as well"
"The Democratic government has its own sources. Oh my, you should get some sleep. How did you find me anyway..."
"DONT CHANGE THE SUBJECT!!! I want a military escort."
" Well, you're not getting one. But if you do go to Daytanistan, give me some Camel Milk. Its hard to get here."

TIRNAN, SUPREME GENERAL KHAVASOV'S CHAMBER, 20.10.07, 1:32AM.

-"Welcome, colonels. I'm glad to see you could all make it. As you know, the situation is dire. It doesn't seem as though any foreign aid will make it past the Daytan blockade, and even though it is undoubtable that we enjoy God's grace, our food supplies will not last us the entire winter. Due to the civil disorder in Indonesia and Espandorra, we cannot expect foreign support. We have yet to establish any direct contact with the resistance in Marak, and we haven't heard much from the emissaries we sent to the Kamuni highlands. The rebels in Marak are probably worse off than we are. Without food, gentlemen, there can be no victory; there can even be no war. If we want to act, we must do so now. What are our options?"

-"Well, Supreme General, some of the mullahs are still considering accepting the Daytan offer. Surely, after such a display of might, we would be granted some sort of autonomy - perhaps even be allowed to maintain our national and religious practices. Either that, or the Daytans will burn this city to the ground as a lesson to other minorities. At any case, we won't have to worry about starvation."

-"Poppycock! We can't just surrender! The infidels will shoot us all on the spot. We did enough stalling, and I've had it. I say we launch an all-out attack now, before our soldiers are starving. Who's with me?"

-"Calm down, colonel. You know as well as I do that we don't stand a chance against the Daytan army. A single Daytan airplane can take us out, and there'd be nothing we'd be able to do about it. Think of another option."
-"Still, Supreme General, I hate sitting here waiting for the grim reaper. What if we turn to the more powerful members states of the Anti-Communist Treaty and ask them to finally nuke Yerbel to fine radioactive dust?"

-"Blasphemy! We didn't come this far to trade one oppressor for the other! Even if they did defeat the heathens, the ACTA members will come to claim their dues, and against them we will be even more helpless than we are now! I refuse to be a slave to the foreign capitalists! How can you even listen to such proposterous suggestions, Supreme General?"

-"Do YOU have a better offer, colonel?"

-"As a matter of fact, I do. We should support our simpathizers in Espandorra and Indonesia Serikat. Maybe with a firmer hold on their governments, the pro-Kamunistan factions would finally get their countries to give us something beside promises."

-"Support our sympathizers? With what, exactly? Our starving troops? Our dwindling resources? And how, prey tell, are we going to send anything past the Daytan blockade?".

-"Still, Manayev has a point. We've sent our people to Marak, and we can send more of them abroad. The people in Espandorra are agitated enough to support our cause even if we don't have anything to offer in return. We have very little to lose."

-"Lirek, you're out of your mind. If we fail this, the Espandorrans will hate our guts. If the peacekeeping force ever does arrive, they'll need Espandorra to stage an invasion, and we already won ourselves more than enough enemies. Meddling in other nations' internal affairs won't save us now; only Allah's grace our guns will. I say we fight."

-"Colonels, I know you are all tired, so I'll be brief. I've heard your opinions and have decided to send agitators to Espandorra and to issue an official support of the pro-democracy factions in Indonesia. Colonel Manayev, make preparations to smuggle our best diplomat to Zürich, and have him on stand-by in case we need to make a plea before ACTA or the UN. Colonel Lirek, you will explain my decision tomorrow before the Councuil of the People's Mullahs and gain their approval. Colonel Badash, if needs must be, begin to train the cavalry to raid Daytan food stores, and try to figure out how to fortify our position in case the Daytans will grow tired of starving us out. That is all, colonels. Good night."

Revolution House (the Saffron Palace), Yerbel
Official Headquarters of the Central Administrative Committee of the Daytan Communist Workers Party
Revolution House, formerly the Saffron Palace, was built by Abdoola Faad Sha in the mid-19th Century, and today still had very much the same air as it had when it was a royal palace, at least in its west wing. Revolution House was the headquarters of the Central Administrative Committee of the Daytan Communist Workers Party, and as such, housed the offices of the party officials who helped the General Secretary maintain control over the organs of government at every level throughout Daytanistan. These offices were located in the east wing of the palace - the same cheap mass produced desks and chairs which could be found in the rest of the country now filled palatial rooms stripped bare of their grandeur by two successive revolutions. Although the exterior of the palace was as grand and palatial as ever, built in a Western neoclassical style, the interior of its east wing only left the faintest impression of its former splendour. The west wing, however, was another story.

The west wing of the Saffron Palace (for this wing was deserving of the name palace), was the home of the General Secretary of the Central Administrative Committee, Farrokh Nugat, the grandson of the leader of the Straw Hat Revolution. Just as the Shahs who had once occupied the building had done, the General Secretaries of the Central Administrative Committee had passed their office (and with it, all the power the shahs had ever had and maybe more) down from father to son. The west wing was decorated in a fashion in every way befitting a modern hereditary monarch. It was filled with a combination of royal artwork preserved from the wrath of iconoclastic fanatics during the time of the Islamic Republic of Daytanistan and more modern works purchased from collections all around the world by the occupants of the west wing over the years. Unlike the east wing of the very same building, the west wing's walls and ceilings had been restored to their previous glory, its halls and salons once again looking worthy of the home of the Shah.

"Farrokh Nugat Sha..." said the General Secretary of the Central Administrative Committee of the Daytan Communist Workers Party, as he admired the portrait of himself which had just been completed and hung in the palace's main hall on the second of its four levels. The appending of the royal Sha to his name was provoked by seeing the portrait hung thus - here it was next to his father, Mamood Nugat, and his father, Khemal Nugat, and before him, the last Shah, Mamood Ali Sha. The line of portraits stretched all the way back to Amad Ali Sha. The only rulers of a united Daytanistan omitted from the portrait gallery were the sheikhs who ruled the Islamic Republic - and they had never had portraits commissioned of themselves to hang.

"Comrade General Secretary..." coughed General Khemal Ali, detecting that the General Secretary hadn't been listening to him for a few minutes. "I was discussing the recent raids."

"Yes, tell me about them." replied Nugat, turning away from his portrait and back to the General, who had flown back to Yerbel from his base in Kashoun Province specifically for the meeting.

"Minor, cavalry actions." the General replied. "They seemed to be scavenging for food and supplies."

"Of course. Khavasov needs to keep his troops fed." Nugat nodded, starting to walk down the hall towards the part of the palace which had once been the residence of the Shah's wives and concubines - the harem. "Your scouts and interrogators have, I hope, some idea of the food situation within the rebel controlled territory, Comrade General?"

"Yes, Comrade General Secretary." the General replied. "If they are very disciplined about rationing and distribution, they have enough to feed the population for perhaps two months. Let us hope that they surrender before the civilians start to starve, but if they don't, well, Comrade General Secretary, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs."

"My sentiments exactly, Comrade General." the General Secretary replied. "Besides, if there are a few fatalities in the depths of winter, the Daytan People's Army will be welcomed with even more open arms when it starts distributing aid to the so-called Kamunis. These raids are a problem though. They indicate that our borders aren't tight enough."

"The perimeter is very long, Comrade General Secretary, and we have only so many troops. More are mobilising in Kashoun as we speak to assist." the General replied.

"Tighten the noose." Nugat said after a brief moment's pause. "Contract the perimeter. That will make it smaller. There's precious little other than the city of Tirnan anyway, and seizing a few more miles of virtually unoccupied territory will push the people closer to the edge."

"Yes, Comrade General Secretary." General Ali smiled.

"But Comrade General, make sure you treat any civilian prisoners as well as you would want your own family treated. I want newsreel footage of the prisoners being fed and cared for by your men, I want footage of the liberated people thanking their liberators for the privilege." Nugat ordered. "We will see it distributed through rebel territory and supposedly sympathetic cities and regions, and watch the support for the rebels crumble."

"Very good, Comrade General Secretary. I shall issue the order to advance into Kam... rebel territory at once."

We understand that, but as of right now, we see no gain in it for us, neither do we see that they can last much longer. Daytanistan claimes that he can seize goods from nations that want to send things to the rebels. BUT, according to an old U.N law that states the rights of neutrals (like # 52 or something), a nation can send supplies to another nation so long as they are not military oriented. So we have the right to send over basic nessesites over to them, no matter what Daytanistan says. We would like to see them get out of that one.

Its not all that strange, you know. and, dont let me reporters die just yet....)

5:00 AM
About 2 Miles from Kamunistani Border

"Well this sucks" The camaraman sighed."The stupid locals are too scared to talk - not that any of them can speak English anyway...."

5 Men were hiding in a ditch in what they found to be the middle of nowhere. The ground was so flat, that the Reporter could have been caught by Daytanistani guards almost 10 milses away on a sunny day, like this one. Apparently, the Daytanistani have been surrounding the Kamunistan Rebels for quite a while. The information the reporters found was not by speaking to the villagers, but by just looking at them. Most were so poor they could barely afford anything, but were looking very happy. They were in Daytanistan for almost a month. If they just could get past the guards, the Kamunistani people would give them information on what's going on.

"While you idiots sit there, i'm gonna video these Commies. You with me?"
"Hmmm.....No, maybe because they can see us???"
If we lie down on the side of the ditch they wont"
"Fine." The man gets up to grab his camera, on the other side of the small ditch. But suddenly, the guards point towards the ditch.

"Oolestiekalmak Farooshmalahe?"

"Oh crap"

The Daytan People's Army was never known for being the most efficient organisation, but even they realised that a group of foreigners lying in a ditch with new fangled video cameras speaking the language of the bourgeois class oppressors they had seen on the newsreels were probably not authorised to be in a highly restricted area. The soldiers pointed their KNB-47s at the nefarious foreign devils and started shouting at them in Dushtoo. If the reporters understood Dushtoo, they would very quickly have gotten the drift.

"What are you doing here! Where are your papers? You cannot be here! You are spies! Where are your papers?" the soldiers shouted excitedly as one of their number started to radio in their find.

"You are under arrest!" the soldiers advised. "Give me the camera and put your hands in the air! Then get in the truck!"

If the journalists cooperated, they were searched for weapons, cameras, phones, film, general items of value (the latter would be immediately stolen by the soldiers), and then piled into the back of the army truck along with all the soldiers other than the driver and radio operator, who sat in the cabin. The truck then roared/coughed to life and raced/struggled to the nearest base. At the base the journalists had their hands tied behind their backs and were thrown into separate holding cells. They waited several hours while the base's intelligence officers struggled to find a working video player which was sophisticated enough to play back the footage the reporters had taken. This having been done they then watched the footage. It was only after this that interrogators entered the cells, one by one, equipped with brass knuckles, truncheons, or pieces of hose filled with iron filings depending on the taste of each individual "interrogation officer", and proceeded to "vigorously question" the journalists.

The vigorous questioning generally began with a desultory punch in the face and a few kicks to the ribs while the interviewee was on the floor. The interrogators then gave their subjects a few moments to think about the possible forms the interview may take, before finally beginning to ask questions.

"So, comrade spy, who do you work for, how did you get here, and what was your mission?" was the question.

(OOC: If the journalists do not cooperate at any point, just say when and I'll post a new order of events as appropriate)

The Stratocratic Theocracy of Rogue Protoss, offers a yearly aid package of 30,000 tons of foodstuffs, and some light industry equipment, in exchange for exclusive weapons dealings with the military

The offered aid package was eagerly accepted, and negotiations were immediately entered into regarding the sort of weapons which the Daytan People's Army could obtain.

(OOC: can you make a mor detailed map plz? maybe with the nearest ocean...)

OOC: The map is vague primarily because I do not know which countries exist around Daytanistan IC. It is in the vicinity of real-life Afghanistan, although it is slightly larger and the geography slightly more varied. Daytanistan is completely landlocked and the nearest ocean would be the Indian Ocean.

The questions continued on and on, and the interrogators usually answered back each reply with a kick in the stomach or a slap in the face. Not much food was given to the reporters, only some stale bread with a small bowl of cabbage soup once a day. All of them hoped that the army would suddenly storm the building and kill all the Daytanistani soldiers. Of course, the reporters lied and claimed that there were no Indonesian soldiers preparing for an attack.

President van Dyke was thinking in his office in the Presidential Palace. Looking out his window he saw a pack of dolphins swimming by-of course, the Indonesian capital city was placed underwater, therefor he could see the dolphins. He was thinking because of the five reporters captured in Daytanistan. The news was to be on air in just a few hours and he knew that other countries would be declaring war on Daytanistan. Indonesia Serikat had already -illigally, like the US in the Vietnam War- declared war, so he could threaghten the Daytanistani but still use that #52 thingy from the UN. The reporters now made a whole different situation. He had to attack Daytanistan. and free Kamunistan, of course.

To: President Johann van Dyke

We understand that, but as of right now, we see no gain in it for us, neither do we see that they can last much longer. Daytanistan claimes that he can seize goods from nations that want to send things to the rebels. BUT, according to an old U.N law that states the rights of neutrals (like # 52 or something), a nation can send supplies to another nation so long as they are not military oriented. So we have the right to send over basic nessesites over to them, no matter what Daytanistan says. We would like to see them get out of that one.

Signed,
Alon Von Calitraz

OOC: I thought I should react to this OOC just because nobody has IC attempted to use any such UN law to justify shipping aid to Kamunistan, and I wanted to make sure it is clear so that people don't get ahead of themselves and assume that Daytanistan would abide by such a thing.

Daytanistan does not recognise the existence of any such nation as Kamunistan, and neither does the United Nations. Consequently, Daytanistan would reject utterly that any such law allows any foreign power to ship anything to Kamunistan.

As has been said in previous IC posts, any aid shipped overland to Kamunistan would be seized by the Daytan government. It would either be distributed to Daytan civilians or to the Daytan People's Army. It would not get to Kamunistan. Any aircraft attempting to bring aid by air would be shot down. Daytanistan has made many repeated warnings to this effect. While Daytan air defences are not sophisticated, they are more than adequate to shoot down any MT aircraft which could be usefully used to bring humanitarian aid (or weapons or troops for that matter) into Kamunistan.

OOC:

Unfortunately Daytanistan has not acknowledged that it has captured any reporters. No public statement about them has emerged from the Daytan government whatsoever. No news from the journalists themselves has reached the outside world either.

The only way your President would know that the journalists had been captured or killed would be if he knew that they entered Daytanistan illegally. You haven't made any post where this is publicly acknowledged, and consequently, nobody knows about it IC asides from the journalists themselves and whoever they told they were entering Daytanistan, and the Daytan authorities.

Further, where the hell are your troops going to charge into Daytanistan from? Indonesia?

A military base somewhere in Daytanistan...

Each of the journalists, who had been separated from their fellows for who knew how long - there was no indication of time in their windowless cells, and the questions and beatings came at random intervals - each was told in turn that one of their colleagues had told them everything. Each was told that he had been named as an Indonesian agent, and that the others had said he was in charge. The interrogators then demanded to know whether this was true, telling him that the commander of the mission would inevitably be sentenced to death and could be shown no leniency, and that if he said nothing to defend himself, they would have to assume that the testimony of the others was accurate.

In the meantime a secret court was convened, and without their being present, and without any legal counsel representing them, the journalists were charged with espionage and counter-revolutionary activity. The judge found them all guilty, and sentenced them all to death pending the consent of the Supreme Daytan People's Council.

Some time after this, the prisoners did not know how long, their guards escorted a Daytan People's Army lawyer into each of their cells in turn.

"Socialist greetings, comrade." the lawyer began in accented English. "I am Captain Beni Yoosh, your court-assigned defence counsel. I am afraid I have very bad news. You have been found guilty of espionage and counter-revolution, and sentenced to death. The court, I am ashamed to say, would not be persuaded by my arguments in your defence. However, I was able to extract one thing from the authorities, and now that I am finally being allowed to see you, I can present it to you. Comrade, the Supreme Daytan People's Council has agreed to pardon you from the judge's sentence of death! All you must do is cooperate fully, and you will be pardoned. This is no trick, I promise you... here is the letter of pardon..."

Captain Yoosh then handed the condemned man a letter in Dushtoo bearing the Supreme Daytan People's Council's letterhead and the signature of a People's Councillor whose name they wouldn't have recognised anyway. The letter ordered that the court's sentence of death be commuted if the condemned cooperated fully.

"You see? It is genuine, you will be pardoned." Yoosh smiled. "Praise Allah, if you believe in him, or else bless good fortune. All you must do is tell us the truth. Confess that you are an Indonesian spy, and tell me your mission. I will then prepare a sworn affidavit of your confession for you to sign, and I will send it to the People's Council, and then you shall be saved from the hangman's noose, and the firing squad's bullet."

If that is the case, Kamunistan has declared independence, thus, it is a reconized naiton, if at least one nation reconizes its independence it is a country. And if our memory serves correct, you did not reconize Kamunistan by its actual providence name, but by the nation name! So it is obvious that you reconize it being a new nation. In that consensise, then we will go ahead and ship over all supplies by air and by land, they will be hevely armed with tanks, fighters, anti ground to air weapons, and a good body of troops, any seizure of goods will result in a declaration of war with your nation.

Have a nice day.

OOC:

You will note that my post was out of character so of course I referred to Kamunistan as Kamunistan. Any in-character posts in which I referred to it by name either did so asserting it wasn't a country or were internal posts containing nothing sent to foreign countries. Further, since the word Kamunistan means "land of the Kamuni" and since in posts and wiki articles we (as in me and Kamunistan's player) have established that the Kamuni are either a separate ethnic group or a subethnic group of the Daytans (depending on your point of view), the word is quite legitimate to be used without it implying that any independent country be recognised. The word "Kamunistan" can quite legitimately be used to describe parts of Ashta and Kashoun provinces in Daytanistan, although it isn't used officially for (obvious) political reasons.

For the record, you have said nothing in character to Daytanistan and have made no IC post about anything your nation is actually doing in regards to this thread. Since you haven't made any post I can respond to IC, you haven't actually DONE anything IC except talked to Indonesia Serikat.

If it is your intent to post that you are going to escort aid with troops and the like - I don't know how you expect to send troops along with your aid, since your nation has no borders with Daytanistan and there are no countries which do have borders with Daytanistan who have given anybody permission to move troops through their territory. Certainly, Daytanistan wouldn't grant your troops military access through its borders to get to Kamunistan, and certainly the UN law you reference doesn't compel anybody to allow your troops anywhere, so you can toss that justification out the window.

Please feel free to participate in the thread, but please read the whole thread and get your head around it before you do so.

OOC:

Kamunistan warned me at the start of the thread that he'd have to come and go, so I wouldn't freak yet.

It's fine for your government to know about the journalists entering Daytanistan, that's not god modding. But getting information back out of Daytanistan, that is where things would be complicated. The Government works very hard to stop information getting out of Daytanistan unless it is information it wants to get out of Daytanistan. Maybe some stories did get out without the government being aware - it wouldn't be impossible. The capture of the Indonesian journalists is a closely guarded state secret though, and it is extremely unlikely that your government would know that Daytanistan has captured them. It might assume, but it would have no hard evidence.

Further, since permission was denied for the journalists to enter Daytanistan in the first place, in order to demand their release, Indonesia Serikat would have to acknowledge that your government KNEW that they were entering Daytanistan illegally in the first place.

As of right now, however, you have made no in-character demand for their release, nor have you made it public that the journalists have been captured. For these things to take place, you do need to make an IC post doing them. :)

To: Farrokh Nugat, Comrade General Secretary of the Central Administrative Committee of the Daytan Communist Workers Party
From: Comrade General Secretary (Emeritus) Noel Hoogaboom, the Dear Leader and Great Helmsman.

Comrade,

I must apologise for my silence on this matter, though obtaining support for our socialist brothers is complicated by the presence of democracy within the Fiefdom and the inevitable bargaining and counter-bargaining that must result from that.

However, I believe that it only be a matter of days before the deputies of the National People's Soviet see sense and offer massive military and economic support during this counter-revolutionary insurgency.

In the meantime, I have instructed my private secretary to clear my diary in the event that the Supreme Daytan People's Council requests and requires my presence in person to lend any aid that I might give in person. Such an offer is not to lumber the Democratic Republic with the burden of an old man during a time of national crisis, but in order that I might be of practical assistance during this time.

Yours in Solidarity,

The reporter than shows Captain Yoosh a rude hand gesture :upyours:

"Silence, I really do not know what you are talking about, or what you just did with your hand, I will not do anything. Daytanistan gives mercy on those who commited sins. So, spy, tell me your mission, and you will not be shot by the firing squad."

DAYTAN PEOPLE'S NEWS BROADCAST AND NEWSREEL - 1 FEBRUARY 2008
(excerpt)

An attractive Zirkshe woman in her late twenties sat behind a desk, reading from some sheets of paper which were stapled together and held in her hands. The microphone in front of her, into which she spoke, looked ancient and if not for the fact that it was in relatively poor condition, might have been mistaken for a deliberately retro touch. Its thick cords spoiled the clean shot of the newscast. On the wall behind her, visible on the left of the newscaster, was the Daytan flag, and on the right was a shot of people celebrating on an unsealed dirt street in Tirnan. In the photograph, a little girl could be seen giving a flower to a Daytan soldier. Any real analysis of the photograph would demonstrate it was from a much earlier time - for one thing, after Daytanistan's blockade of the region of Kamunistan, the population was on average much thinner than the happy celebrating people in the photograph.

"The patriotic workers and peasants of Tirnan and the surrounding areas in Ashta province completed the heroic overthrow of counter-revolutionary religious fundamentalists who had attempted to seize power in the area." the newsreader said in perfect Dushtoo, reading the story from cue cards held next to the camera in lieu of the teleprompter, which was still broken. "A group of mullahs, agents of superstition and brutal suppression of the rights of the people, had armed an illegal militia of counter-revolutionaries, mostly foreigners, and have attempted to hold the city of Tirnan and the surrounding areas hostage at gunpoint for sometime. The mullahs withheld food and medical aid from all loyal Daytan citizens under their power, although it is unclear at this stage whether they did so to encourage counter-revolutionary support of their barbaric actions, or whether they did so to attempt to profiteer by selling the seized food and medical supplies to foreign powers."

The photograph switched to men in religious garb hanging by their necks from branches of trees and from second-storey windows in Tirnan's buildings.

"As the Daytan People's Army advanced on the counter-revolutionary mercenaries, the loyal workers and peasants of Tirnan rose up against the evil mullahs. Without their hired muscle to defend them from the people, the mullahs were forced to flee. Those who would not were hung as traitors by the patriotic people, true sons and daughters of the Straw Hat Revolution!" the newscaster reported. "The Daytan People's Army was victorious over the foreign mercenaries, and the revolutionary soldiers were greeted as liberating heroes by the workers and peasants of the region. No time was wasted in celebration by the authorities, however, and the Daytan People's Army immediately began the distribution of emergency aid to those unfortunate but heroic people whom the mullahs had starved."

"In other news, a group of Indonesian film makers producing a wildlife documentary entitled Daytanistan's Unique and Glorious Flora and Fauna - Envy of the World were unfortunately killed today in a car accident in Ashta Province..."
