Beats 0 a Barrel

"This thing doesn't go any faster," said Corporal Reynold Thompson under his breath. He was the captain of a 6-84 Cruise Tamaha Oil Scout. He and his crew of 28 men, were in the Atlantic Ocean, half empty, searching for oil patches. If you found oil, that meant you were rich. It was almost impossible to get your hands on it anymore. It was about $400 dollars a barrel now.

"Sir," shouted out a crew man "the radar is showing something rather weird. It's not oil, but we should take a look anyways," he said. He was short, and blonde, handsome and in his 20s. The young man was loyal, and Thompson liked that.

"It's worth a try I guess. We're probably just wasting our time. Heck, I doubt there's any oil even left on the planet. But give it a try anyways." said the Corporal.

"Alright sir," replied the crew man. The ship shuddered for a moment, and a loud whining sound came from above. The Corporal looked up, a huge crane, stretching about 300 feet long, was swinging westwards, with a large arm attached to it, attached to the arm was a drill, obviously for the oil.

"All personnel, clear the landing area. I repeat all personnel clear the landing area," said an automated voice. If there was a way to kill it, the Corporal would. The ship shuddered again, and the crane changed direction. It started heading downwards, towards the water.

"Steady," said a crew member, operating the crane. It was a hard job to operate it, and over top of that, the crane was noisy, and slow.

"And we're in," said another crew member. It would now be another 5 minutes before the crane reached the sea floor. The Corporal decided to make the most of his time, so he took out a book and began to read.

The Corporal had almot drifted to sleep, but now he was ready to do anything but that. He snapped to alert, after a huge explosion rocked the ship, and 25 foot waves came up, and out of the water.

"What was that!? Someone tell me," barked the Corporal.

"Hard to say Corporal. I can't see down that deep," said the crane operator sarcasticly.

"Yeah well I hope you can hold your breath for over a minute minor," said the Corporal. He was mad now. The actions of his crew could get them all killed, and if they did, he would have to take the blame anyways.

"Now everyone listen up! I think there was a problem with th---!" Another huge blast rocked the ship, almost tipping it over. Then another, this time it knocked the Corporal off his feet, he cursed, looked back, and saw flames. He looked the other way, no flames, but smoke, which meant flames.

The Corporal could hear screams, and his nightmares came true. 4 crew members came screaming, and they ran out of the flames, glowing a bright orange, burning. Their skin was turning to embers. They had lost all their hair. One of them fell to the ground, and began rolling, screaming into agony. One of them jumped into the water, and immediately the water around him turned red, and fins could be seen circling the body.

The crew rushed towards the remaining members, and tried to smuther the flames, until the Corporal called them off.

"They're gone, don't bother with them, now someone tell me, what was what," asked the Corporal, he had fear in his voice, which didn't help the crew. Suddenly alarms everywhere started going off, the Corporal looked, the alarm read: NUCLEAR RADIATION ALERT! ALL PERSONNEL EVACUATE THE SHIP!

"Oh my god, there's nuclear materials down there," shouted a crew man. The crew member turned, saw a fire extinguisher, sprinted towards it, he picked it up, and then it exploded. He was in-gulfed in flames.

The Corporal looked up, and saw the ship radio, he didn't care what frequency it was on, or who received the message.

"This is Corporal Reynold Thompson of the Shiloban 6-84 Cruise Tamaha Oil Scout, we have ancountered problems and need assistance! I do not know our coordinates, we need assistance evacuating the ship," he said into the radio.

4 Greal destoryers were nearby when they picked up the message. The first mate came running to Captain Pete.
"Whats going on?" asked Captain Pete.

"We picked up a distress message from nearby."said the first mate panting.

"This is Corporal Reynold Thompson of the Shiloban 6-84 Cruise Tamaha Oil Scout, we have ancountered problems and need assistance! I do not know our coordinates, we need assistance evacuating the ship,"said the radio.

Captain Pete walked over to the radar.

"We picked up something, a couple of miles ahead of us.'said the radar operator.

Then smoke came rising in front of the small Greal naval fleet, that meant trouble.

"Call the port, we need premission to fire if something happens when we get there."said the first mate.

After obtaining premission, the small fleet headed toward the smoke.

"If you can here us, this is Captain Pete of the Greal destoryer Muklin, we are coming to your assistance."said Captain pete into the radio, the message was intended for the ship that sent the distress message.

"Look sir! A ship," said a deck mate. The crew looked to the west and saw a Greal Destroyer. The crew was happy, but not Reynolds. "Sir, you do see the ship right," said the deck mate.

"Yeah, I do. But why would a destroyer help us, are they trying to hurt us," asked Reynolds, obviously upset. "I mean, if they fire at us, there's nothing we can do. All we'd be able to do is sit and watch ourselves die, in burning flames," he said. He had just destroyed all the crew's morale. Reynolds looked around, and noticed what he had just said, and what effect it had on his troops.

"Someone make contact with them, tell them we mean no arm, and we have no weapons," ordered the Corporal, the crew did exactly as he said. A crew member rushed over to the radio, and the Corporal cuffed his ears to hear what the young man was saying.

"This is Thompson McNeal, do you read us," the young man said into the radio.

"Tell them we're not armed, and we need help quick," said Reynolds. He looked around the fire was spreading quickly. He cursed under his breath again.

"This is McNeal, we are not armed, and we need your assistance. Land a helicopter on board if you can. We have suffered over 10 causlaties, and counting, we need your help quickly," said Thompson. The ship shuddered to another minor explosion.

The pilot of the X02-Wryvern slid his hands over the cold metal of the control console. He was running relatively dark, just out on another routine scouting run. Radio silence was not currently in effect. He punched the open COM button.

"Hey Jack, see anything?" asked the pilot. So far it had been a fairly boring night. He and his wingman, Jack "The Ripper" Johnson had flown this stretch of sea for three months now. Word had it there was some kind of incident there a few years back, but no one can seem to remember what happened.

"Just the same old boring water Cap." came the mans reply. The Wryven pilot's name was Justin "The Sidewinder" Harper. He was an Ace Pilot and had more then 1452 flight hours clocked. He scanned the controls again, he had a funny feeling tonight was not just the "same old" as his friend had suggested.

He flipped through the COM channels, looking for any signs of a problem. He didn't find any at first, but kept trying. Then all of a sudden, a wall of water exploded beside a ship about 24 yards from them. A moment later, his systems all failed simultaneously, his craft started to plumit. Moments after that, his systems came back to life and he regained his air speed. He saw that Johnson had done the same.

"What in the Holy Hell was that!?" Came the voice of his friend over his Com.
"Must have been some kind of Emp...wait, I'm picking something up on the E-Band." Harper tuned his radio to a high signal strength on the E-Band of the Com Network. What he heard disturbed him.

"This is Corporal Reynold Thompson of the Shiloban 6-84 Cruise Tamaha Oil Scout, we have encountered problems and need assistance! I do not know our coordinates, we need assistance evacuating the ship," he said into the radio.

"You get that?" asked Harper?
"Yeah...I did." Came Johnson's cool reply.
"Good. I need you to get in touch with Admiral Whitcomb, tell him to send some of our evac vessels out."
"Got it."

Harper accelerated his speed towards the ship that was broadcasting th S.O.S. He sent a reply. "This is Capitan Justin Harper of the Hell Rouge Air Force, I've sent for some of our evac cruisers. Is there anything else I can be of assistance with?" as the broadcast this message, he made a fly by of the ship. He was picking up high levels of radiation emminateing from the sea below it. He radioed to Johnson. "Johnson, advise base that there are high radiation levels around the ship, suggest hazmat teams." He waited for the ships reply.

It was normal as usual of the bridge of the firehelper command battleship Yong Heng de Guang. However soon a minor comm officer spoke up saying
"There is a minor increase in water radiation on a bearing of 23 degrees west." As soon as he finished another monitoring officer spoke up saying "There is a distress call on the same bearing."
The admiral proceeded to tell the helmsman to change course. However, seeing as the small fleet would not arrive for another hour or so a command went out to the battlegroup carrier to send out several aircraft and helicopters to assist and assess the situation.

Two fighters flew overhead taking pictures that were being sent back to comm battleship on several spectrums. Soon after several helicopters approached the ship.

"Sir there's more ships! I think they're here to help," said Thompson McNeal. He looked around. Suddenly he wasn't so happy anymore. 7 more crew members had died, they're smoking corpses lay just several yards from him. He looked to make sure the Corporal was alright, for now at least, he was in mild shock.

"Yeah, the're here to help us alright," said Reynolds "all we need is a helicopter, but I doubt that's gonna happen there's no where for 'em to land," he said. He looked up, and saw a hatch, then a lightbulb turned on in his head. He remembered there's a firehose up in the ceiling.

"Get up Thompson," said Reynolds firmly. He did, and quickly.

"What is it sir," he asked. Reynolds pointed. "Oh my god! I can't believe we didn't think of that. The ship shuddered and threw them off balance. Then an explosion came, and the glass in the cockpit around them shattered loudly.

"Sir the flames are coming in, we've got to get that firehose out of there," said McNeal.

"Alright you boost me up, and I'll open the hatch and retrieve the ladder," said Reynolds. McNeal nodded, and Reynolds stepped onto his hands, and pushed up to open the hatch. It was then that he heard screaming, and a small shudder. He looked down, McNeal was in flames. The bottom of his legs were no more.

"Sir! Oh my dear god sir help me," he screamed in agony "ahh, I'm dieing sir, I'm going to die," McNeal's torso was beginning to burn now, the flames were now in the small cockpit. Reynolds knew there was nothing he could do, and he couldn't get himself killed now. He pulled his legs up, and away from his burning comrade, and opened the hatch, he pulled out the firehose, and turned it on.

He sprayed wildly at the fire, and managed to beat it out of the cockpit after 5 minutes. He was chasing the fire back, when the ship trembled, threw Reynolds off his feet, then he smacked his head on a control panel. He felt lightheded for a moment, then he felt extreme pain. He touched the back of his head, then quickly pulled his hand back. Blood.

Captain Chong settled into his shiny new faux-leather CO's chair, slightly annoyed at the squeaking sound it made. But then, this was a new ship. A new Super Dreadnaught. Purchaced by the OPDF from DMG military industries as the fleet's flagship. As it was on its trial run, having just been refurbished by OPDF engineers, there was no escort with it.
"Clarkson, run the radio test." Chong ordered, chewing on his unlit cigar.
"Aye,sir. The blonde radio operator started the radio scan, then patched it through to the entire CnC.
All was calm and dreary, until a burst of static caused everyone in the room to shudder with fright.
"This is Corporal Reynold Thompson of the Shiloban 6-84 Cruise Tamaha Oil Scout, we have ancountered problems and need assistance! I do not know our coordinates, we need assistance evacuating the ship.
"What the hell?" Chong sweared."Pinpoint that."
"Aye sir." The seaman uploaded the location of the distress signal to the main viewer, and Chong studied it.
"All right,if an oil scout's out there there has to be oil,and I want some. But first,we need to rescue the people stuck there. Flank speed to location!" He shouted through the intercom to engineering.
Pushing the nuclear reactors into overdrive, the ship was capable of a sizzling 36 knots, which made the trip to the disaster area only half an hour. But would it be soon enough?

"Yes, we detected other ships nearby, apparently they heard the distress call."said the radar Operator.

"Tell everyone do not fire at any nearby ships unless they are hostile to our ship."said the captain looking at the radar screen.

The helicopter dropped a rope ladder onto the burning ship's deck so the crew could climb unto it.

"Thank you so much...umm are you from Greal," he asked. He was happy to be off the ship, the helicopter took off, he looked down at the ship, he started at it, and then in one last, a final blast, the ship blew into multiple millions of peaces. If the Corporal had been on the ship for just 45 more seconds, he would not be sitting in a helicopter.

He was a happy man.

"Sir we've just received a telegram from Greal," said Julian Roberts, the President's Personal Assistant, or PPA. She looked at him, waiting for orders.

"From Greal? What do they want from us," he asked. Julian was confused, she was asked a question, not given an order.

"Uh, they rescued a commander from an Oil Scout, he's in Greal, he was the man you talked to about a week ago sir," she reminded him. He nodded.

"Oh yes, he was a friendly chap. Well what do you suggest we do," asked the President. Another question, not good on Julie's part.

"Well sir," she began "I thought we should retrieve him from Greal," she ended. The President nodded as ususal, but she knew he wasn't listening to her, he was thinking his own ideas.

"Yeah, we'll do that, but that's it? Maybe we should have the leader of Greal over for a state dinner," he said with excitement. Julian wasn't happy. State dinners meant she didn't go home that night, she'd be up 'till 3 planning.

"Yes sir," she said.
