I would like to discuss another type of furry, one that is not so cute. This little monstrosity comes from changing animals into men and turns out some very nasty critters. Of course, it all started with the Island of Dr. Moreau, and spun off all kinds of wonderful things like Planet of the Apes and other such things. Dr. Moreau appears in some wonderful illustrations in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
One of my favorite variants comes from a series by S. Andrew Swann, Forests of the Night. http://www.sff.net/people/SASwann/books/fotn.htm
I used this partially as a template, however instead of fighting other humans, they were fighting rage zombies, and alien plague viruses. The basic template was the loyal canid-- immune to the alien virus and warped into a kind of frontline soldier.
It started with the first viral plague wars with selectively bred zombie hunting dogs and pointers. When the second war erupted with newer more deadly variants, it introduced the next generation of almost human dog soldiers immune to the plagues... and trained to fight with human supersoldiers and hunter killer teams...
