Office of the Praetor of Vetalia

As previously stated, the former Praetor of Vetalia, Ivan Melnikov, has retired from office and his successor Valerian Kosyachenko will be assuming power at the start of next year. We plan to host an inaugural ball in order for interested nations to learn more about our new leader and to witness the first change of power in 12 years.

We wish to cordially invite nations from around the world to attend this event and celebrate this change in power. This will be a valuable opportunity to showcase our country to the world, build up ties with other nations, and give the world a view of our new leader. Specifics of the events will be provided as they are planned, and we welcome commentary from attending nations as to their specific needs and suggestions. Security will be provided for this event and foreign guards are required to remain outside of the Palace for the duration of the ceremony.

You may RSVP here, and details regarding the event will be provided as they are planned. In addition, we will provide helpful information regarding travel, health, and culture in Vetalia to ensure this is as pleasant an event as possible.

The dress code for this event is white tie. Obviously, attendees can dress as they wish prior to and after the event, but the ball itself is strictly white tie. However, exceptions can be made for religious and cultural reasons as we wish for all attendees to be as comfortable as possible during this event. Any exceptions to the dress code and etiquette for this event must be negotiated beforehand to ensure that, to prevent any potential problems, all of our security staff are notified of these changes.

Imperial Message From: His Imminence Harold the Cardinal Thousis Cenobiarch of the Holy Waldenburg Church
To: Office of His Excellency the Praetor of Vetalia

We first wish to begin by offering our Congratulations to Ivan Melnikov, we understand he has done great things for the Vetalia and the world. We wish to present his with an estate inside Waldenburg, a villa in the Allumna islands. There is no pressure and he may do with it what he wishes, but it seems the least we can do. At any rate it would be my very great honor to attend the ball myself, as head of government of The Most Divine and Illustrious Empire of Waldenburg I shall also hold Sovereign autonomy, we may discuss any matters of state that should mark such an event. I greatly look forward to the day of my arrival, it seems like an excellent chance to exchange diplomatic greetings.

With Regard:

In addition, we welcome His Immenence to this event and look forward to developing closer ties between our nations.

A Primer on Vetalian Culture and Etiquette from 'Orlov's Guides: Greater Vetalia'

Vetalian culture is the product of centuries, even millenia of slow evolution combined with decades of rapid change. As a result, it is a mix of old and new that can seem unusual to an outsider.

-Arguments and hostility are never openly fought, and shouting is considered boorish and inappropriate in any public situation no matter the situation. In fact, many people will lower their voices as an argument grows more intense.

-Drinking is a common activity, although public drunkeness is frowned upon. Wine is the most popular social drink, with knowledge of wines a major status symbol. A wide variety of liquors and beers are consumed by the lower classes and for more informal occasions.

-Wealth and status are generally shown through the quality of goods rather than their extravagance, although elaborate architecture and design are common. Vetalians respect self-reliance and hard-earned wealth, and do enjoy hearing stories of individual business success or attained fortunes, although this necessarily entails a similar tale from the listener. Business clothing tends to be more professional, and the knowledge of formal clothing and behavior is a must for entering the highest social circles.

-Gifts are traditionally given when visiting the home of a friend. This does not necessarily apply to state dinners, although personal friends of the Praetor and allied nations are welcome to do so as a show of friendship.

-Never, never, never use a royal title or nobility as an excuse for rudeness or condescention. The overthrow of the imperial family in 1951-1955 and centuries of noble rule have ingrained a strong disdain for authority via bloodline and many Vetalians are angered by the use of said titles to look down on others.

-Unfortunately, many Vetalian citizens have a sense of cultural supremacy that goes above patriotism. Avoid denigrating or criticising our culture without justification. However, Vetalians are also very open-minded and will hear both sides of an issue before making a decision.

-The country's hot climate and rainy monsoon season are the source of many jokes and idioms. Be prepared to hear them and hear them, no matter how irritating or unintelligible they seem.

-Russian is the native language and Cyrillic the native alphabet. Foreign visitors who can speak and read them fluently, especially the Vetalian dialect, will be warmly received and given special insight in to Vetalian culture. However, most Vetalians know another language, English the most common, and there are multilingual staff available at government facilities should they be needed.

We hope this aids you in your dealings with Vetalian citizens before, during and after the ball.

I would of course be honored and obliged to attend this ball, in celebration of the Vetalian people's transition from an old government to a new. May the achievements of Praetor Melnikov be remembered, and his mistakes corrected in the government of Praetor Kosyachenko to come. I need only some time to coordinate with any potential Vetakan delegation, and then I can arrive with all due speed.

OOC: No, because I'll be moving back in to my dorm this Sunday, so my schedule is iffy during most of this week. I'd prefer to have everyone know about it now and then start it when I'm certain I'll have time to keep an eye on it and keep it moving.

However, late RSVPs are accepted.

The Armed Republic will be sending a small delegation to pay our respects to the new Praetor. Due to pending hostilities between The Armed Republic and other nations, we are sad to report that neither the Arch Arsonist nor senior members of his cabinent are able to attend. In their stead, we will be sending the commanding officer of the Death's Head unit; two colonels from the Death's Head, an intelligence officer for protocol purposes, and one staff member. We hope this is accecptable.
