The phone rang, piercing the low drum of the office heater. Ryan Collins sighed and wheeled around in his chair away from the computer screen. The phone rang again as his hand hovered over the reciever. He looked up and saw that the hands were moving slower, the mind playing tricks with a burnt out journalist, he determined. Reluctantly, he finally picked up the reciever.
"Ryan Collins" he said in an attemptive professional tone "Yeah...I'm working on it right now, I'll send it up in about ten minutes, I understand...yeah...alright" and with that, he nearly slammed the phone down but decided against it. His editor, Stan Lebenski continued to dog him about the esignation of Commissioner O'Shea of the NYPD. It was a follow-up to a story he himself broke three months ago, all stemming from one incident.
Tom Brooks, a black male from Brooklyn, an honest man with a family and a job in construction was walking home late one night when in the same area, a convenience store was robbed and the store owner, beat severly. A police car stopped Brooks; who, in a moment of panic ran from the police and after a short lived pursuit stopped and threw his hands in the air. The two officers called for back-up using their cellphones and two more officers arrived on scene. They began to beat Mr.Brooks with their batons and upon him falling to the ground, they kicked him in the ribs. Mr.Brooks was eventually taken to a hospital and processed by the department. He suffered major injuries and nearly died as a result but pulled through and began to point the finger at the department. One of the officers,a junior patrolman by the name of Jose Vargas, refused to take part in the beating and was threatened by fellow officers as well as Commissioner O'Shea to remain silent. Ryan interviewed Brooks and Vargas and discovered the cover-up and broke the story and was on the front cover of The New York Times. The three other officers went to trial and pled guilty to avoid a lengthy sentence and O'Shea came under heat as a result. Two weeks ago, O'Shea announced he intended to step down as a result of the scandal. Ryan recieved praise for his work and now was finishing the follow-up story which he would email his editor.
After a few more spellchecks and adding a sentence or two, he emailed and saved the story and wearily turned off the computer and sat back, exhausted. For the past three months, he slept little and worked always. Everyone began to leave while he stayed to tie up some loose ends, Ryan was a sort of workoholic. As he contemplated his next move, he looked out the office door to see everyone was gone, he was the last one. SIghing he rolled down his sleeves and began to pack his things to go home. Suddenly, the lights went out in the office. Dammit! Just my luck. He knew that the janitor was probably asleep and against his better judgement, decided to check the circuit breaker himself. luckily, he had a flashlight in his desk from the last time the power went out. He navigated the hallways and down the eerily silent and dark stairwells to the basement which always gave him the creeps wether or not they were lite. Upon entering the basement he swept the beem of light from side to side, checking for the electrical room. Finally, he dicovered the room and entered, seeing the breaker. He opened the lid and searched for the switch, fumbling with the light all the while. He gripped the switch and flipped it up...all went black as a jolt of energy surged through his body, exploding the bulb in the flashlight and tightening every muscle in his body. Sparks flew from the breaker and a wave of electricity coursed through his veins. Finally, after the horrible and painful ordeal, the current stopped and Ryan collapsed to the ground, smoke rising from his body...his heart still pumped life.
(OOC: The basic concept is similar the the show Heroes as well as X-Men to a degree. A mysterious light appears in the sky and spreads throughout the atmosphere, plunging the entire world into darkness for 24hrs. Astrologers and scientists wave it off as a freak electrical storm brought on by a meteror that disintegrated in the atmosphere. Of course, something far more complex ensues afterwards. Ordinary people become extraordinary. As these people discover their new traits and talents, they must come to terms with the reality of their new found powers and the possibly lethal consequences if misused. Some will use their powers for good while others for evil. An unseen force begins to plot and rally these children of the next stage of evolution to a more sinister cause while the government attempts to track and subdue all those affected by the anomaly.)
