President Apperouth looked down around the table, the Supreme Council was around him, and a few faces he recognized were David Brown, head of the Vuhifellian Protection Agency; and Amanda Seppulchar, Chief of Capitol Security.
"Mr. President, since President Daniels's assassination, the VIC and the VPA have been hard at work trying to find out as much as we could about the assassin. Ms. Seppulchar has some important clues you might want to know about."
They all turned to her, the newly instated 27 year old, who was barely out of college; and yet, the federal government entrusted her with the protection of the capital city.
"Ballistics testing has showed that the bullet fired at Mr. Daniels was fired out of a silenced gun, which is why no one heard a gunshot. The type of bullet was a standard 5.56 NATO round and we can tell from the angle of the bullet hole it made in the capitol steps that it was fired from the Steven Daniels Memorial Obelisk. Police in Dinsmark recently found a rifle with a home-made silencer on it but until we can test it, we don't know if it's the same rifle used to kill the President or if the fingerprints on it belong to the assassin.
"However, I think we have an important lead as to the identity of the assassin."
"Oh?" asked the president, "and who would he be?"
"It could be a citizen of the People's Republic of Burlovia."
"And how would you know this? We don't have diplomatic ties with the country. Most Vuhifellians don't even know about it. And the last time I checked, it isn't on the Vuhifellian customs roster. So how would the assassin be Burlovian?"
"About three days after the assassination, the VIC received an alert after a few key words were said in a phone conversation. The words were president, kill, and bounty. The conversation didn't last long enough for us to actually trace the call to it's exact location, but the call was made within the country of Burlovia."
"With that much intel it may just have been a teenager talking about his newest video game."
"Yes, but protocol states that we investigate each possible lead to the fullest extent."
"Fine, fine. I'm putting the VPA in charge of the investigation, all operations are to be headed by Mr. Brown. This is to be kept at Code One secrecy. All documents are to be presided over by the Presidential Guard. And the VIC will send it's intel directly to me. And...David?"
"Yes sir?!"
"Seeing as we don't actually have diplomatic relations with this country, I don't want an international incident if an entire team of VPA agents ends up getting beheaded. I want you to let the field work get done by Section 66. Single man. Now, I want the eyewitness reports given to me immediately, Councillor Davis, you may deliver today's reports from the Council of Internal Affairs...."
