The Mark I Eyeball has been the most versatile tool at the disposal of the soldier in any time period. Its adaptability, sensitivity, and capabilities have only been recently matched by equipment. Even these pieces of equipment have yet to match the Eyeball's durability. As with any warfare system it is a target of war.

We present a series of LASER Dazzlers designed to disorient, confuse, and blind your enemies without resorting to nasty chemicals or biological weapons.

The first result of PROJECT ORCHID is the the ZM-06 Man Portable LASER Dazzler.

The ZM-06 MAN Portable LAser Dazzler (MANPLAD) is the the individual soldier's option for rapid disruption of enemy eyesight, photo-electric systems, and possibly even guided missiles. Designed around the overall shape of a heavy machine gun, the ZM-06 is a solid state laser, using an artificial crystal.

The ZM-06 can output 4 simultaneous beams, 2 in the visible spectrum, one in the infrared spectrum, and one in the ultraviolet spectrum. The 2 in the visible spectrum first cause the immediate blindness, rendering the target blinded. The infrared laser heats the eyeball, causing immediate pain and forcing the subject to retreat and causing immense pain. The subtle heating for soldiers nearby can even harm their eyes over a long period of time. Finally the ultraviolet laser causes fluorescence in the eye, resulting in a powerful glare coming from the eye itself. The advantage of the ultraviolet laser is that it is invisible to the naked eye, has a large radius of action, and saves power.

The ZM-06 also includes 4 separate tuning knobs that modulate the wavelength of the laser diodes being used allowing the user to defeat glasses tuned to defeat certain wavelengths of light. Each diode can be used separately or together in any combination, set by a series of switches on the side of the ZM-06. Ultraviolet only for a power saving mode, infrared for the disruption of guidance systems, and visible for blinding people. Combinations can be used and frequently are to depending on the circumstances.

The ZM-06 requires a fairly large rechargeable lithium ion battery pack that is attached by a cable to a fairly heavy 20kg backpack. The battery pack can be removed in the field for rapid switching. It is also capable of using a simple plug in charger and a solar field charger.

Otherwise the ZM-06 is mostly made of polymers to reduce its weight, has a bipod, and a 3x red-dot scope that can be switched out for different optical systems.

While we understand superior products are possible, and easily developed, they do not fit within PROJECT ORCHID's specifications. Your product, while more advanced, requires more than just a laser diode and far more advanced equipment.

The adaptive optics set and the multicore processor were considered for the ZM-06, but that would require upping the battery pack's capacity and the result would be an extremely poor battery life. The ZM-06 uses almost no power when powered down, and it has a long life of about 4-10 hours depending on battlefield usage.

The mirrors and lenses, while special, aren't milspec, and cannot survive the rigors of combat.

We also cannot justify such a large range for the standard infantryman, he would barely be able to see without a massive telescopic lens, and would only be able to laze large targets at range.

This renders the product far too expensive and to make a profit would bleed customers dry.

We are afraid we must reject your product and continue refining the ZM-06 design, perhaps releasing an adaptive optics set in due time to increase its range.

Does this permanently blind who it is used upon? It can possibly fill a niche that flash bangs can't because of range and its delivery is different. It' might be game for use in Thon law enforcement. I'm looking into fielding it into a police role, and experimenting to use its effect on a modified differently built but around the same principle naval based missile countermeasure/defensive system or technology.

The ZM-06 can and has permanently blinded people at the ranges between 2 to 3 kilometers. However you can turn down the settings so it can only permanently blind people at extremely close ranges for extended periods at time.

However to build an effective LASER countermeasure/defensive system you can use the CLM-01 Common Laser Module.
