A Growing Territory

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w107/Cookesland/Red20moon20desert.jpg

The small territory of Herema was an empty waste only a short time ago, now only six months after the Cookeslandic annexation the territory has become a fast growing place.

Harbor City, Herema - What it lacks in arable land the territory more than makes up in it’s mineral wealth, with ample amounts of iron ore, manganese, and gold. There is rainforest that grows in the far northwest of the territory that is under the process of being protected. Furthing the territory’s oddities a place for generation hydroelectricity is in the eastern part of the land.

Herema is bordered to the south by the territory of The Order of America, and across the Bay of Panagiotakis, land belonging to Dweladelfia. Unlike other parts of the Sawney Islands the territory has enjoyed relative peace. This peace however has not stopped the Cookeslandic government from establishing a new naval base and shipyard.

This has in turn created many new jobs such as mining and now ship building, on top of the prospect of cheap land has brought many people to the new land. “It’s a great time of growth and properity, I never would have thought it for such a desolate place.” Says Governor Mary Wu (http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/pix/wu_mary050729.jpg).

New Species Discovered

http://www.nsf.gov/news/mmg/media/images/guyana15_f.jpg

The Cloud Forests of Western Windonesia have held many secrets, and until just a few days ago they held another secret, the Blue Quetzal.

Sagitara City, Windonesia – Yesterday famous ornithologist, Jonathan Roterberg, discovered a new species previously unknown to Cookesland. “It just goes to show you that we in fact still don’t know everything to know here.” Said Roterberg. The bird originally was going to be named after the Orithologist himself, but insisted the bird not be given his name, instead has been named Pharomachrus Windonesiae after where it was discovered.

The Blue Quetzal lives in the cloud forests in western Windonesia, where it eats insects and fruit from trees. It is still unknown how many eggs it lays, what it's nest looks like, what a female of the species looks like or even it's status as a species. However, many orinthologist from Cookesland will be looking to find answers to these questions.

The Forest of Akashi, where the bird is found, is currently not protected from hunting by state or federal law, but this may very well soon be changing. The bird doesn't appear to be in harm's way for the time being, so there isn't a reason to fear that people in future years may enjoy this natural jewel.

Foxswift Slams Dolphin Hunters

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w107/Cookesland/0276.jpg

After a period of no official position, the Cookeslandic Government today announced it's official stance on the recent rise of International Dolphin Hunting.

Coricas, Federal Capital District – Today President Alan Foxswift strongly criticized nations engaging in commercial dolphin hunting, calling “an international stain”. “These aren’t some stupid fish that jump through hoops and swim around in the ocean, they can think, they’re intelligent. These animals aren’t too far from us. All this and there are so called “civilized” nations going around, driving them to the shore, hacking and bludgeoning them to death.”

The idea of legalizing both dolphin and whale hunting in the Cookesland and the cetacean rich waters of the Cooke Islands was recently put up to a vote, in which 91% of the people polled did not wish to make it a legal part of the fishing industry. Many proponents say that it could provide an excellent source of food and is a delicacy that could easily become part of Cookeslandic cuisine. Opponents greatly oppose the “barbaric ways demonstrated by these nations would be a stain on Cookesland.”

The President has said "My administration and i are vehemently opposed to any such legislation, and any bill set before me on such will be vetoed. With such steadfast positions, it is highly unlikely that Cookesland will be seeing any Dolphin Burgers soon.

New Industry Booming

http://www.propertymanagementbulgaria.com/pictures/lang1_vacation1_31019.jpg

After a massive discovery of Roses a new industry has popped up and found it’s little niche in Cookeslandic Business

Port Imbris, Pauanui – New shipments arrive here at the Port Imbris docks like many other imports, but these crates are handled with special care. The crates are full of rose petals from the aptly named Roseland where not long ago the Geographic & Survey Corps made their remarkable discovery.

The petals are then transported to the factories in Port Imbris, where they are crushed and liquidized. The sudden influx of roses has also sparked a demand for rose wine, tea, face creams, and many other products as well. “Did you ever know notice that if people have an excess of something they get creative with it? This is great!” says winery owner Max Hanover.

Not all the fields are being used for industry, some plants have been brought to Cookesland for testing and for cultivation. A fair portion of the fields are also being kept in their pristine form, and being untouched by workers in the area. The rose’s variety is known as a Scarlett Carson, this is thought to be the world’s largest collection of this type of rose. May be even of roses themselves...

Independence Granted!

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w107/Cookesland/FireWorks02.jpg

After almost a century after Cookesland purchased The Cooke Islands the nation has decided to grant them their independence.

Byheia, The Cooke Islands – The Cooke Islands officially became the newest country in the Sunrise Islands today, after representatives from Cookesland and The Cooke Islands signed documents granting the islands their independence. Other representatives from the other 7 nations of the region also recognized the islands independence at the meeting.

It was a long awaited day in the hearts of many natives, who for decades dremed of this day. “Finally we can live in our own country, with our own people. That’s all we’ve ever wanted.,” says octogenarian Ruth Stoorwald. The Cooke Islands have been an overseas territory of Cookesland ever since 1912. The decision came last May after the proposal for independence was ratified with 90% of the population FOR. However not everyone is happy with this. “So what happens now? We get another JaMina Lykras come in, and plunge us into anarchy? No thanks!,” says resident Harold Parker.

The Islands relations with Cookesland have been some what strained as of late, culminating with the January uprising five years ago, where radical JaMina Lykras rose against the local government and captured Governor Grover Telfi. Ms. Lykras is currently incarcerated in Cookesland. “That was then, this is us now.”, says Legiator Olivet Calpura, “We are trying to move into a brighter future by working with our neighbors, ending corruption, and encouraging more tourism.” The Cooke Islands has a pending membership with the Sunrise Union and is set to begin using the regional currency, the Yonàri, by next March. “We still have a lot to do, but just wait and see this country soar.” Was the closing sentence of the nation’s newly elected executive officer, the Legitor, Olivet Calpura.

Cookesland conducts Naval Exercises off Isolian coast
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w107/Cookesland/destroyer_2.jpg
The U.S.S. Mensa at sea

In recent months the Cookeslandic territory of Isolia has grown exponentially, and has been the site of a naval demostration.

Picosa City, Isolia - While exact cause of this sudden exercise is unknown, many today observed for their homes or Picosa beach the sudden arrival of 13 addition Cookeslandic naval vessels into the harbor. However, most of the spectacle occurred outside the harbor by the Alovand Islands father out to sea.

Afterwards when asked how they we were answered “The whole operation went, very well” When we inquired as to what the general purpose was, the answer was drastically different “That’s classified” the officer in question refused to give his name. While we don’t know their purpose, we can’t start jumping all over to conclusions. So far Isolia and it’s environs….well most of it’s environs have remained very stable.

The Isolians themselves had little to say other than it was certainly a change up in the daily routine, but none seemed very happy with the ships staying. Who knows what will happen with this certainly unexpected move by the Cookeslandic Government.

The Eagle’s wings spread farther

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w107/Cookesland/Flags/German_Flag-1.gif

In recent years Cookesland has encountered more and faster growth than ever before. In fact some of the areas that have been held longer and have grown greatly may soon apply for statehood.

Coricas, Cookesland – With the addition of the former Cazelian Cabelle, the newly claimed Cookeslandic Osmiu, and the newly extended “Protectorate status” on the Free Cities of Irada and Irshon, the diversity and area of the United States has grown greatly over the past few years. All of this new growth has done a lot both good and bad for the nation. While although you can now see Cazelian restaurants in borough of Wakecrest in Port Imbris, and Penguinoids promenading down Atene Street. in Coricas, racial strife and hate crimes have been the cause of tensions all over the nation. “They come in and think they just own the place, vandalizing buses and our homes. Their kids too, every Tuesday I have to go out and pick up my trash spread out all over the street by them!” said irate citizen L. Paul Jones of Fairview. We weren’t entirely sure about who the “them” was…

Others have not been as unhappy with this new period of growth. The territories of Herema, Isolia, Richland, and Soli’vil have made out very well. The Herema Territory before was only an untamed deserted…well, desert. Now it is one of the nerve centers of the Cookeslandic Military and a lucrative center of manufacturing and producing. Soli’vil has gone from an abandoned military under sea base to an underwater city/ research center. There are rumors spreading that these very four may soon apply for statehood, making them the first new states in almost 220 years.

As this era of expansion continues who knows what it will bring for the United States. We can only wait and see and leave the rest to the stars.

Fire at the Capitol

http://cache.virtualtourist.com/1499023-A_small_part_of_the_Pennsylvania_Capitol_Complex-Harrisburg.jpg

Today, U.S. Capitol Police are investigating a fire in an elevator shaft on the second floor of the capitol not far from the Senate Chambers.

Coricas, Federal Capital District – The Mall was an odd site today as fire trucks and fire crews stood close to restless Senators nearby. A small fire broke out in the Capitol today causing the entire building to be evacuated. No one was harmed or injured. The fire is believed to be caused by electrical wiring but the matter still remains under investigation.

“It started out like just a normal day, and then at about 10:15 the alarms went off.” recalls Senator Frank DiCicco (P-Pauanui), “Then we all filed out and the next thing we all know is there are fire trucks pulling up.” The fire was luckily small and was quickly put out reports Fire Commissioner Terrance Jones, “At least one good thing that has come out of this, now we know that the Capitol’s alarm system is working well if there was a much more serious event.”

The St. Valentine’s Day Fire, as it has been referred to as, will undoubtedly be go down as a close shave for the Capitol. An inspection of the rest of the Capitol is expected very soon, until then Congress has been adjourned.

STATEHOOD!

http://www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/senate/archives/assets/photos/2004/apr/78-23_04032004_GFD.jpg
Fomer Territorial Governor Mary Linnet is sworn is as the first Governor of the State of Herema

Foxswift says “You’re in Now.”, to the new states of Herema, NW Soli’vil, Isolia, and Richland

Aquarius, Richland – Today, cheers rang out in the streets of Aquarius as a parade leading through the city to the new State Capitol building. In Picosa City millions cheered as their flag was raised next to the Cookeslandic tricolor, not as a territorial flag, but as a state flag. Harbor City saluted their state’s new ascension by a 21-gun salute, utilizing the battleships of the base.

The road to statehood was a very rocky one, with the four of them referred to as “The Quadruplets”, meeting opposition on all sides. Main reasons for the oppositing cited that”these new regions are too far away to be an effective part of the union and too sparsely populated, they’ll be too dependant on the us to effectively function as states” says Senate minority leader Isabella Wu (G – Saria Island). The overwhelming desire t become states along with the great success as seen in the self-government of the territories swayed President Foxswift to sign into effect the Statehood Act of 2008. The new states will be included for the first time ever in these year’s presidential elections

Cookesland signs treaty with the Sercaan League

http://www.thevisitor.pl/Editor/assets/GDANSK/TRASA%20CENTRUM/ratusz.jpg
Irshon Town Hall dates back to the 14th Century

The new Treaty guarantees the sovereignty of the Free Cities of the Sercaan League, while also protecting their rights to trade and pass from the Acalian Empire.

3rd Disreig, Irshon – For the past two weeks, representatives have met in Irshon Town Hall to discuss the relationship between the Free Cities and the U.S.C. The cities, now calling themselves the Sercaan League, have since last September joined themselves in a loose political and economic alliance in order to serve as a stronger force against foreign powers, namely Acalia. This is the resulting aftermath of an attempted invasion of the Free Cities of Irada and Irshon on the part of the Acalian Empire last September, now the two formerly quarreling cities and their neighboring cities have made peace.

Key points of the meeting included discussing the League’s trade rights around the Perdllwor Sea, the training of the individual militias into an organized fighting force, and the construction of roads, railways, and infrastructure in Sercaania to promote the easier passage of citizens and goods between the cities. Another issue that was brought up was the fact that none of the cities have ports or are easily able to ship their goods out. The result will be the construction of a new port city to be built with the help of Cookesland and the other five cities. This newly built city will serve as the administrative and commercial hub of the region.

The process has been long and rocky, for the first time groups that have been at odds for ages are now sitting at the same table and of course, not everyone is happy. Many see the new move as a disaster, but the majority of people in the area see this as a step in the right direction. “Now we don’t have to worry about Acalia coming in and controlling things or some neighboring city attacking us. This is the beginning of a wonderful relationship between the cities of Sercaania” says Irshonian college student Meredith Folssom.

History

The city of Coricas started out as a muddy river field in between two rivers, the location was picked to be the new capital in the middle of the new Federal Capital District. Architect J. Pierre Chevalier So, on January 1, 1800 the city was officially founded. At first growth was slow, but soon because of it’s location on the rivers trade began to pick up and soon more people came to live in the still rural feeling city. As late as 1850 Coricas still was full of dirt roads and roaming farm animals.

By the time of the Cookeslandic Civil War broke out amoungst the States, Coricas was still a small town (pop est. 76,000). The city was heavily defended against the Separatist Forces. The southern part of the city was heavily damaged by Union and Separatist Forces during the Battle of Coricas in 1858. Scars from the shelling can still be seen in some of the older parts of the city

For a brief period after the war, Coricas had a territorial government but this was very soon abolished in favor of direct rule. Congressional governance of the District would continue for a century. In 1865 Congress passed the Incorporation Act which incorporated the towns of St. Maria and Libernall into the city of Coricas In 1878 Congress began to finish many of the cities boulevard’s which had been halted due to other priorities. Around this time many other parks and monuments were also contructed along with a new (and also the current) rotunda for the Capitol.

The capital was hit hard by the depression during the 1930’s the relief programs introduced under President N. William Midden brought a surge in the city’s population. Another surge in population occurred after the second Sunrise War. By 1940 Coricas was the second largest city in the United States. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s riots occurred the largest being after the assassination of Civil Rights Leader Bandar Al-Najal. President C. Grant Johnson ordered 14,000 Federal Troops into Coricas, the largest occupation of a U.S. city since the Civil War.

The city began it’s subway system during the late 60’s, in 1969 the first 5.8 miles of track were completed and on March 17, 1970 the Coricas Metro was officially opened. Today the city has 128 stations and over 200 miles of track

In 1973 Congress passed the 29th Amendment allowing the City to vote in the presidential elections, elect a mayor, and be represented in congress, later that year G. Adrian Booker was elected as the first mayor of Coricas.

In 1996 after almost 70 years without a team, Coricas was awarded a major league baseball team, The Nationals, and a new baseball field was constructed Sarien Memorial Field which is located with all of Cookesland’s other stadia in South Coricas.

Geography

Topography

Coricas is surrounded by the four states of (Counter-Clockwise) Pauanui, Saria Island, Windonesia, and Nicktenstein situated where the four states boundaries originally met. The city is has an area of 1,545 sq mi, the same size of the mythical land of Rhode Island, almost all of it being land area.

Coricas has three naturally flowing streams: the Wissinoming River, the Bellian River, and Fairview Creek. The Bellian River and Fairview Creek are both tributaries of the Wissinoming River. There are six manmade reservoirs in the city limits 5 are in North Coricas with the largest, Garobini Reservoir being located in West Coricas near the Bjornson Institute.
