So close, and yet so far away [ooc/interest thread]

Thanks to Yafor for giving me a couple of ideas for this. Much props.

What I wanted to do was find something to write about that wasn't on the scale of a world war—quite frankly, those bore me to tears and make me want to tear my hair out at the sheer wankerage factor—and I thought doing just the opposite—that is, focusing on characters, rather than huge troop movements—would be just the thing to get me away from the nuke-lobbing and missile spam.

It came to me that, since I play a country whose population is mostly composed of ethnic Adygeans, and Russian migrants and Soviet remnants (roughly half-and-half), it would make sense to play out some ethnic tension, perhaps spurred on by Adygea's president, Lyov Bacherikov (an ethnic Adygean), getting elected. Perhaps the Russian minority feels that the election was not fair, and believe that they were deliberately kept from a Russian president because the Adygeans want a return to an almost fully native state. Perhaps this could start on a smaller scale, with a representative to Parliament instead of the President, and the tension could begin in a region.

Are there any further thoughts on the basis? Perhaps something involving Chechen immigrants, as well?

For those interested:

I want this to be a fun thread, but one that is also full of epic win and god. To that end, there will be no statblocks for the characters. You tell the rest of the people involved whatever you can about your character in paragraph form. This (http://www.simegen.com/romance/charchart.html) page will help you in enhancing that description, if you should get stuck.

There will be little to no excuses accepted for improper or generally poor usage of the English language. If you do not consider yourself a savant in the field of communication, you are not up to my standards; but because I'm feeling like a nice guy, here (http://www.roleplaygateway.com/viewtopic.php?f=131&t=827) is a link repository to help get you there.

In addition, I'd like to see how this tension would play out in all walks of life, so please feel free to declare your character a member of the Adygean military or government. Basically, I just reserve for myself the ministerial characters, the commandant of the Internal Security force, the chief of the Intelligence Service, the President, Vice President and Prime Minister and the joint commanders of the Adygean military. Anything else is fair game, including aides to those characters.

Would any of those who are still willing to participate please indicate their opinion below?

[Yay, I was mentioned! Anyway, of course I'm interested. Most likely I'd be interested in playing Yaforite electoral observers, looking around to see how fair the election was, and maybe a journalist or two. Yaforites tend to take elections very seriously (one of their own in coming up), so this would be of great interest. Plus, as I said earlier, ethnic tension is always fun.

Of course, I'm available to play an Adygean or Russian if you want me to - just give me the go-ahead and I'll put the description of my character or characters down. Though I do like the idea of a Yaforite journalist. Might give me an excuse to shine some light into Yaforite journalism.]

Well, the only problem with foreigners, though I don't really have a problem with them, is that they won't have a natural grasp of the ebb and flow of the culture, and will thus probably be confused about why so-and-so is so upset. They'll have a basic idea, but the tension goes much deeper than just what one can observe on the surface, of course: there's a lot of mutual dislike that's half-known, and there's a fairly long history of discrimination by both groups.

[Of course, that's only natural, especially for a complex culture. The good thing about being a journalist (especially one from Yafor 2, a very tolerant and inoffensive country) is that my character would then be able to view to country from a third-party, unbiased point of view (especially if he is working for The Zarathion, the "international unbiased news magazine"), and yet manage to get a feel for the country. It would be an interesting plot device as well, since, as my character's knowledge about the country and the feud grows, so does the audience's knowledge about the country and the feud. I can be a national of the country, but I think that it might be more fun and interesting were I a journalist.]

All right—that sounds fine. I just wanted to make sure you were cool with accepting that drawback. Welcome to the RP. (:

I'm available to play one of the upset Russian migrants if you like.

Fyodor Beliniki, aged 26, is one of the former Russian citizens now living in Adygea. Besides the election of Lyov Bacherikov, I was thinking that Belinki could be angered by the fact that his cousin was beaten in a local election by an Adygean, despite living in a majority Russian neighbourhood. He feels that the results were unfair and could have been tampered with, and thus is also suspicious about the presidential election. He feels marginalised by the Adygean community because of this.

I think your character concept is really interesting, but from looking at your previous posts, I don't think you're the sort of writer I'm looking for. It's nothing personal, of course.

Uh, sure, it's your thread after all. I hope it turns out well.

[Moving this up so that others can see it - I really liked the idea and am hoping that it pans out.]
Kulikovia

I am highly interested in playing. It's a refreshing take on the whole rping genre. Kulikovia is a Russo-Germanic state and perhaps for rp sake, our two nations could border or something and I can play Kulikovian officals and citizens reacting to the rising tension. Does that sound good?

This sounds like one of the most interesting ideas in a long time. Since there very well might be some antagonistic feelings between the two major players, how about a character who is a member of a break-away group (tribe, clan, etc.) who reside in the virtually inaccessible mountainous regions of the nation that are sympathetic to the Russian minority. This group is largely comprised of elite commando/mercenaries trained in the art of stealth infiltration/assassination. The character I have in mind is a top-notch sniper, nick-name "Changer". As the thread unfolds, he can eventually find his way to a city where a primary (but expendable) target (diplomat, general) meets an untimely death, possibly resulting in a civil war.

This is just the random-thought outline. I can flesh it out as it goes along.
