A Rising Crescent (Open/Sign up/Interest)

It's been a long while since I started an rp...

Those of you who roleplay with me regularly may be aware of my slightly backward and very unruly southern province of Surdun. For those that don't, my map and factbook are available in my signature.

With the establishment of a local government in the semi-autonomous country, and representation in the Naashan Assembly, law and order has been returned to all but the furthest reaches of the desert land. But the era of peace and influx of new migrants has brought the first seeds of a new problem.

The arrival of Islam and the foundation of mosques and religious communities was at first hailed as yet another victory for a new and multi-cultural Surdun, the newcomers found plenty of converts amongst the poorly-educated peoples of the countryside and desert and gave hospitality to the poor in the cities. But the problem with recruiting the poor and marginalised in society is that they are many and easily radicalised.

The thread will start as events begin to spiral out of control, an upsurge in violence as the muslim communities clash with traditional Surdunni ones is soon made worse by the formation of several militia groups, all with the same demand: that Surdun becomes an Islamic state.

I'm particularly interested in participation by other Islamic nations, either trying to defuse the situation and help maintain order or taking action to destabilise the country further, gaining a foothold for radical Islam on Nova Europa. Anyone else is of course welcome to join with declarations, advice and support or direct deployment of peacekeepers (once cleared with me, no 'I send 10,000 men to your country to kill the terrorists' please...).

OOC: Sorry, but is your country capitalist or what? Just want to know so I can tell where Kulikovia may fit in, I'm interested.

Aye, western style capitalist although the southern province where this takes place is large, arid and in some parts desert. Many of the populace are poor and not brilliantly educated.

OOC: Cool, I suppose Kulikovian agents could be sent to the province to train, arm, and supply these militias similar to what Iran is supposively doing in Iraq.

OOC: Are you going to make the opening IC post?

I'll be making it later this afternoon probably, aye.

I'll help you kick their asses, and it'll also help me try my new "methods".

Alright, this is a prelude to the fall of my fairly left (for Naasha anyway) government, so the response isn't going to be tough until it things get seriously... serious.

Btw, expect opening IC post this afternoon/evening. I'm working like mad on a bigger, better map of all of the Naashan territories along with a wiki article for now.

I'd like to send people in...but on which side, I'm not sure yet.

I'd be glad to have you aboard, AB.

For those of you interested in background material, I have my new map (http://s79.photobucket.com/albums/j157/Caliyen/Nationstates/?action=view&current=Naashapoliticalmap-1.jpg) right here and I am working on a wiki article (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Naasha) which already contains information on the history between Naasha and Surdun.

Hm. Well, since you were so kind to help Trivalvia out in its time of need, I'd like to pitch in if possible. Given my own nation's general stance, we'd be contributing peacekeepers rather than supporting any particular side within Surdun (and the Trivalvian forces could use an exercise to help them restore some confidence and honour among their ranks).

I've noticed that the starting point is August 2009 - just a few months after the Green Revolution. Guess none of my new home-designed hardware will be present, but I've got enough off-the-shelf equipment to deploy three or four national regiments easily enough.

Goodo, thanks for the interest Trivalvia.

The IC thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=536994) is now open and things will continue to heat up for a while yet before peacekeepers are required. Until then you can send condolences, diplomatic statements, covert aid (and incitement) to either side and so on.

@Kulikovia, I was about to suggest you target a police station! Muslims in the city may well feel that the police are mistreating them now as they are beginning to break up gatherings and demonstrations and enforce a curfew.

The city has five major police stations. The police HQ is a four storey building located in the city centre, is bustling with activity and reasonably secure. However, the four district stations are still reasonably busy and far easier to penetrate. I would suggest targeting either the north district station, which was the place of work of LC Guilligan, the policewoman killed by the crowd, or the east district station, which serves the district encompassing the burned down Sakal mosque.

Is there oil in the region? I've RP'ed New Potomac as having some aggresive oil companies. I could have a storyline involving oil workers, and their Blackwater-esque security contractors, caught in the middle of the situation.

Ummm... yes there is, somewhere. I'll get back to you with the location but the oil is refined and used domestically currently. That means your workers would have to have been contracted to work for a Naashan company I guess. Let me know if this works.

I think so- I'd like to keep them as working for one of my oil companies. I think the way to make it work is to have the New Potomac oil company as a subcontractor for whatever one of your companies is refining the oil. Sort of like a Haliburton or one of the other RL contractors who are hired for their expertise, but don't actually control the oil field.

The Gaskr oilfield is located in the desert to the north of Viir, effectively between it and the rest of the country. Oil is piped south-east to a refinery near the edge of the city and the resulting products are distributed via even more pipes to Surdun and Naasha. Oil workers may also be found in the city, as tankers are used to transport the oil to Naashan cities on Nova Crete and Tretton island.

Regarding my latest post, in order to move the thread along I assumed that the two hostiles in the dunes had been eliminated and the first hostage freed. The other insurgents made a clean escape and are likely to be hiding somewhere in the city, although going door to door at this point is going to be difficult.

Sure thing, the city has an airport that is as yet unaffected and the port is also open.
