((OOC- Ant, I assume you can RP the Indian princes for me currently?))

SIC

In the midst of the night, one messenger and a guard of four Imperial Persian horsemen made their way to the courts of Indian princes all over the sub-continent of India. The messenger had one principle goal- to call the rulers of India to a meeting In Delhi to discuss the obvious mobilization of Alversian troops in Southern India. Most Indians would undoubtly feel more secure if the Europeans were off of the sub-continent, but Persia was willing to let France keep it's colonies and the Alversians were the only ones mobilizing such a large force of men.

These men had been chosen by the emperor of Persia himself, Cyrus. They were trusted servants whom he knew would be willing to die for the cause that he had aspired in them. Serve blindly. The horses they rode were the finest around. Black arabian horses, noted all around the world for their feats of speed agility and reliability. Too soon would they been nearing their targets with this message in their hands:

To the Great Princes of India,

I write this note to you in due haste, and must skip all due formalities in which you deserve. As you undoubtly know the tyrannical Europeans from the far north are enslaving our people to the south.. and forcing an army out of them to attack one of our brother, Hyperdad. Because of this I must call a conclave between you, the emperor of Persia, and I in Delhi to discuss this horrible camality that has befallen our beloved homeland.

Sincerely

Kashatri Monalt
Prince of Delhi

The Persians were not the only ones who were busy in the night. Beyond the borders of Alversian India, horsemen travelled up and down between the various city states and princedoms that dominated this area. Meanwhile a message was also sent to the Emperor of Persia

Official Memo from the office of the Govenor-General of India

To: His most esteemed Emperor

We have become aware that you are attempting to rally the Princes of India behind the scum of Hyderbad. I cannot pretend to be pleased with this development as you may find you have backed the wrong side in this conflict.

I will explain. Two weeks ago, a town within Alversian borders was attacked by a large mob of Hyderbad horsemen. The town's garrison and populace were unprepared for the attack and suffered accordingly. Although only four native Alversians were killed and decapitated in the attack, hundred of Indian men, women and children were murdered and mutilated. This war has been demanded by the populace of Alversian India.

Therefore, that is why we mobilise against Hyderbad. We have no desire to conquer India and certainly no wish to collide with any other Princedoms. This is a war of honour and decentcy against an immoral and corrupt enemy. We hope you understand these reasons and can come to the negoitiating table about the issues

Yours Sincerly
Govenor-General of India
Kennith Barlow

In the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty and in the sixth year of our reign

Jida, the prince of Hyderbad, had been recieving letters for over a week from the other princes of India.

"We must unite!"

"Set our differences aside!"

"For greater India!"

"We're at your back!"

"Keep the Europeans where they belong!"

Was their general tone. Jida yelled to a servant standing by the door.

"Take this down! Noble Emperor of Persia, we graciouslly accept your offer to meet in Dehli, you clearly have the interests of greater India in mind. I have recieved letters from nearly every other prince of India showing their support for our cause. I anxiously await our meeting in Dehli which I will personally be attending. Hail the Exhaulted Protector of India. Hail the Emperor of Persia."

General Cavourna stared out at the marching troops below his window and sighed. It seemed all of India was mobilising to fight for the Hyderbad scum. Still what did he expect? One nation to be removed for a dozen others to take it's place. It made no difference. 200,000 Alversian and blood thirsty Indian troops were ready. Hyderbad was the enemy of the people and would be crushed underfoot.

Persia was his only real worry. If the Indian states fought as well as each other then it would be Persia who would bear the brunt of this battle. How much would the Persian people be prepared to lose in pursuit of a war that didn't involve them in the slightest?

He shrugged at looked at the clock, his ultimatium to the Hyderbad Army would soon run out. From then, it would be war. Wiether it be against Hyderbad alone or the entire continent he didn't care, there was work to be done.

----------------

The lone horseman galloped through the night, sweating and panting as much as his horse. Eventually he reached the capital of Hyderbad. Without even attempting to enter he threw a package at the guard who had come to challenge him. The letter read

To: The Nizam of Hyderbad

Within a few hours, a dreadful and most horrific slaughter will be inflicted upon both our nations. We stand at a brink into which India might fall and burn. However, you have the power to prevent this slaughter. Over 30 million Indians beg for the blood of the murderers from Malegaon and we shall, by the will of the people, march through all of India until they are found. However, if you hand over the murderers of this act, then the people will be satisfied and we shall stand down. I give you until midnight. If I recieve no reply then consider us at war.

Jida, the twenty-seven year old prince of Hyderbad, sat nervously on his throne. This seat was not for him he thought. It was for his father. Where was his father now? He needed him so dearly. Jida gestured to a nearby servant.

"You dispatched the messanger to find my father?" He asked.

"Yes, my lord." Replied the servant. After seeing the prince had no more business for him, he bowed and retreated into the darkness of the hardly lit room.

Jida sat, deep in thought.

"It seems my father must end his hunting trip short." He said to no one in paticular. The prince once again gestured to his servant and once again he appeared from the blackness.

"Fetch a scribe." He said, not looking at the man who crouched infront of him. The man left the room quietly, but in a haste. Propping his head in his hands, chewing on his ringed index finger a bit, he said to the darkness,
"Hyderbad shall not submit to threats or imperialism. Hyberdad shall not surrender India."

((OOC- I suppose we can assume they have arrived?))

The Persian emperor welcomed the princes of the many principalities and kingdoms of India into one of his palaces situated in Delhi. The people of India were blood-thirsty to end Alverisan rule in Southern India and Persia was only too happy to oblige. The place where a meeting would take place would be in a war room in one of the palace's secret chambers. Only generals and those high ranking in the court knew of the room.

Guards were already all around the palace as the prince(s) of India arrived. They would be transported to the war room immidetly and given knews of the current happenings in Southern India through the emperor's various spy networks. The emperor greeted all of them, skipping the formallities due to the seriousness of the matter.

"Welcome my friends, but I should hope you see the urgency in this matter and the reason why we must get down to business immidetly. In order to feed the allied army we will need the food-stuffs from around the Ganges river. We will also need the man power that you all can provide for the army. I will be able to provide 300,000 troops to the cause, and some semi-modern equipment that can be mass produced and distributed quickly to our allied army. We must make this mobilisation hasty if Hyperdad is to survive the onslaught of the European menance."

Prince Kashatri Monalt,

I recently recieved an ultimatum from the Hizam of the south. He has readied his forces and we have gathered reports from farmers and other ruralists that they have seen his forces on the outskirts of my kingdom. I'm sorry but we have I have no time to attend this meeting in Dehli. I am in Hyderbad, rallying and arming my troops. The time for action is now. I have written the other Indian princedoms requesting aid. We do not have long. We cannot hold forever here. Please send whatever help you can spare, it is direly needed. For greater India.

My emperor has ordered me to send 30,000 Cavalry to help secure your territory until argreements can be made upon how many troops and logsitical supplies can be sent to Hyperdad to defend it. Along with the advance force, we are sending you two wagons of weapons[Outdate, but probably more advanced then what they have right now] to help the cause of India.

"3...2...1...zero!" Cavourna, staring at the mantle clock, paused for a moment as it struck midnight "-1...-2...-3..."
"Sir!" it was his deputy who broke the awkward silence
"Ah yes...give the order...it's time"

--------------------------
Campsite, 4th Highland Regiment

The blaring trumpets and beating drums brought the Highlanders scurring from their tents, equipment and weapons ready for combat. The Regimental colours flew high as the Battalions formed up and prepared for the long hard march ahead. Several shivered for it was early in the morning and the Highlanders wore kilts. They were tough and batle-hardened soldiers who would fight like devils once the enemy was in sight.

Lieutenant-General Ernie MacIntyre passed by the columns on his horse before looking to the trumpeter beside him. Upon one nod from the Lieutenant-General the Trumpeter, a young Ensign, inhaled deeply and gave a loud blast. A small pause was broken by the bellowing of every Seargeant in the Regiment "COMPANY!!...QUICK MARCH!!" the Regiment began to move off swiftly, equipment banging off the thighs and backs of the men as they marched. They were some of the 150,000 who had begun the advance at midnight.

The Alversians were coming...

It seemed as if the city of Hyderbad was in a frantic scurry. Mothers were shepherding the children alongside wagons, leaving the city for the safer north.

Prince Jida stood watching from his palace balcony.

"Sir," came a voice from behind, "should I close the city gates to keep the people in?"

"No, no. Let them go." Said Jida absent mindedly without even looking back to see which of his many viziers it had been.

He looked down at his battalions of musketeers and riflemen. He had tried to place them in a European style formation but anyone could tell with just one glance they were certainly no army of Europe. Meanwhile some of his other viziers were overseeing the equiping of several troops of men who were to be armed with... more traditional weapons. Spears, swords, axes, bows and arrows, sabres, whatever they could lay their hands on. Their cavalry had already been equiped, they waited by the east gate into the city, awaiting further instructions. Once again, without looking behind him the prince said,

"Tell the men to begin to move the artillery into position." The prince watched from his balcony as orders were passed around and slowly, the outdated cannons they had bought from European merchants began to creak into motion toward the south gate.

"Vizier," called Jida, "still no word from my father?"

"No, my lord." Responded a voice.

He had dispatched a messanger to the north about a week ago to find his father. Where was he?

"My lord!" Shouted a voice from behind. This caused Jida to turn finally. "Look!" Yelled the vizier. The cavalry reinforcements the Persians had promised we slowly filing over the hills from the north-east. For the first time in days the young prince grinned.

"Have the musketeer and rifle regiments move into position alongside the cannons." He called back to his vizier. They were not going to lose the city without a fight.

Prince Jida could see the Alversian troops approaching. He had ordered his artillery take the high ground a top a hill not far outside of the city walls. His men, roughly 42,000 in number, were told to fire the moment their foes came into range. To his left, near the bottom of the hill, the famed cavalry of Hyderbad had been merged with 30,000 Persian cavalry who had been sent to reinforce his position. On top of the prince's 32,000 mounted warriors, this made a formidable foe for the Alversians. The two wagons of weapons and supplies sent by the Persians had proved very vital for the seriously under armed city-state.

The young prince gripped his traditional Hyderbadan sabre in one hand and with his other he reached for the holster around his waist. For his birthday his father had purchased a new weapon for him, a type of pistols, what the Europeans were calling a "revolver." The grip was encrusted with jewels and emrelds.

"Sire," said a servant from behind Jida, "would you like me to remove your jewelry and ceremonial clothes now that you have given your speech to the troops. You will make an easy target for an Alversian rifleman in that attire."

"No, no, that's alright. Thank you though. I won't be too close to the actual combat, at least not near enough for any rifle to hit me." Said Jida.

Where was his father thought Jida. This was not his place. Could war have been prevented if his father had been home? The battlefield was no more the place for him than was the throne room. His speech had been decent, if not stock and generic, but certainly not awe inspiring. Jida could not help but think that this was not his place. He almost asked the servant if there had been any word from his father yet but he held back. He would have been informed by now if his father had sent word. And what did it matter now? It was him and him alone now. All up to him. The Alversians were getting closer.

The Alversian Army marched hard through the night, chasing off several bands of marauding Cavalry which attempted to either storm the supply trains or the frontline regiments. Neither attempts were successful as the Dragoons chased off the cavalry raiders. It arrived a few days later at the capital. The enemy had chosen to fight behind the walls. So be it.

General Cavourna watched the enemy walls through his telescope. He surveyed it from the entrenchments being built to house the breeching and siege batteries. The Indian crew, sweating and stripped to the waist, worked to load the 28 pounders which would pound the Indian walls. The Sergeant of a nearby 24 pounder adjusted his aim until he was sure that he was accurate. He looked to Cavourna still fixed on his telescope. From where he was standing, the Hyderbad troops looked disorganised and undisciplined. He also noticed their weapons looked rather old and worn. Smiling sadly, he nodded.

The great gun gave a mighty and thundering roar as it jumped back in it's carriage while covering the nearest men in earth as it was churned up.

Cavoura looked through his telescope in time to see the impact of the shell. It had exploded slightly below the main battlements, sending masses of stomework tumbling to the ground. He nodded to the gun crews

"Well done Sergeant. Sapping Batteries commence bombardment"

The grinning crew began to reload as it's companions added their fire to the marker. Cavourna watched as smoke and dust began to fill the air from the walls. He hoped they would be enough although he very much doubted it.

OOC: Haha, excuse me, reread my last post. I chose to defend a hill OUTSIDE the city.

OOC: Damn, my mistake

IC:
The Alversian Army reached the city within a few days of marching. Although the troops were tired, morale was high and they were looking forward to battle.

Cavourna stood on the plains in front of the city peering through his telescope. It was not the city itself that interested him but rather, the mass of Indian Infantry and cavalry on the hill next to it 'what's defending the city then?' he wondered.

He continued to peer at the Hyderbad Troops lined up on the hill. They looked scruffy, unorganised and with poor weapons maintenance. Their position was strong on the peak of the hill but he was sure he could cancel that out. He watched the 24 pounder field guns being loaded just behind where he stood. Their crews, stripped to the waist and sweating in the heat, worked to align the guns with their targets.

The nearest was being moved continiously, to the commands of a rather burly Sergeant. Once he was satisfied, he looked at Cavourna who gave a small nod. The gun gave a tremendious crash and was thrown back and up into the air as the limber bit into the ground. The gun beside it fired as well making the sound of an echo across the plains

Cavourna watched the first shell crash into the ground just short of the Indian Infantry while the second landed behind the assembled cavalry. "Well done Sergeants" he said to the two men "You have your markers. Fire at will"

The other entrenched guns began to fire as well up the hill using the two shots as target markers. Cavourna watched the dirt being thrown up by each shell as it exploded in the ground. His attention was diverted momentarily as his ten Regiments began to move forwards slowly in front of him, bayonets fixed and cavalry at either flank. Battle would soon be joined.

Shells of artillary were bursting in the midst of his army.

"Return fire!" Shouted Jida to his artillary regiments. Several loud bangs and then he saw several expolosions in and around the Alversian lines. Another enemy shell burst dangerously close to his Persian and native cavalry.

"Have the cavalry fall back behind the hill." He said to one of his viziers over the artillary fire. "We'll deploy them when the time is ready, right now they're just targets. And tell the musket and rifle regiments prepare, those advancing lines we'll be within shooting distance soon. We have the height advantage, we'll be able to hit them long before they can return fire."

The Alversian lines drew closer.

"Wait," said Jida, "wait." They came closer. "FIRE!" Shouted Jida. The first volley fell straight into the advancing ranks.

4th Highland Regiment

Men twisted and fell in the Highlander's ranks. One man was hit between the eyes and thrown back in a cloud of red mist. Another soldier was hit by three musket balls similtaneously and thrown backwards down the hill. Men marched over the bodies of their dead and dying comrades to the fearsome wail of the bagpipes. Corporals moved amongst the formation closing the gaps in the line. Just ahead, the light Company was already taking pot shots at the Indian Troops as they struggled to reload the older muskets.

"Regiment!...HALT!!" the troops stopped as did the Regiments on either side of them "Present...ARMS!!" the troops shouldered their weapons and the entire line took a half-turn to the right as each shoulder calmly put the butt of the musket in his shoulder "FIRE!!" the entire line fired as one just 150 yards from the Indian line. At that range, the rifled muskets were dead. "HIGHLANDERS!!...ADVANCE!!" The Scotsmen began to walk forward, bayonets straight out in front while the 24 pounders ceased their bombardment.

The Scots were coming. So was the rest of the Army.

Troops hit the ground all around Jida. He wondered what it would be like to fall down and never stand up again. This was no time for that sort of thought though.

"Return fire, give um more volleys!" A few moments passed as the frantic musketeers and rifleman struggled to reload. They were not used to this kind of warfare. After an awkward pause in the battle, the Indian troops raised their guns again and fired on the advancing highlanders, those men wearing silly skirts.

The lines of Alversian gunmen stood strong and the highlanders tredged on on their uphill march. They were still a good distance from the Indian lines, but too close for comfort.

"Reload, reload!" Shouted Jida. A few of his men began to throw grenades down at the lines of musketeers and riflemen firing back at them. The grenades rolled downhill and stopped at the feet of the enemy lines. God Jida was thankful for those Persian supplies.

((OOC- My cav are already there. Hm, I think I have a way around this.))

The carnage of the first day was immense. Men were falling all around and the Alversians did not seem to be letting up their assault. General Jubal Henyt was having trouble fathoming the distance between Delhi and Hyperdad. He knew that the Persian infantry would take time to mass and get to Hyperdad. In short he knew that Persia would never get an army massed and delivered to Hyperdad in time.

Persia could get an army to the province north of Hyperdad before the Alversians could do anything to stop them. It was perhaps the best choice of action for the times to come.

The general walked towards the prince with a grave look on his face
"Prince Jida, we'll never be able to hold out in the city until large amounts of Persians can arrive. Being able to mass 30,000 of my men was a strain on the Persian war time funds in itself. The massing of 200,000 or more men will take time. The only solution can be to retreat your forces to the province north of us and await the emperor and his army."

"Ah, now I see you Persians in your true colors. 'Save Hyderbad, Protect India' one day and the next it is about your own safety. You may flee if you wish, my men will not stop you, but while my men still hold this hill, and still have our families inside that city, we will never run."

Trumpets sounded from the enemy camp. They had failed to take the hill yesterday, the Indians had not even needed to deploy their cavalry or for that matter the Persian horsemen either. Surely they could hold a second day. Surely they could keep the city safe long enough for reinforcements to arrive from Persia and from the other Indian principalities. He had recieved word in the night that troops, both on foot and mounted, had been spotted making their way to Hyderbad and that at this moment only a few dozen miles seperated them from their position to the hill on which he now stood. These men came from Nagpur. They were here for greater India as well. Surely they would bring word that other Indian states were close behind. Surely they would.

The grenades exploded at the feet of the Alversian troops. As they exploded several troops fell backwards, holding shredded stomachs or limbs. The hill became wet with blood. The rest continued forward under the deafening bagpipes and drums. After a while the call came "HIGHLANDERS!!...CHARGE!!" the Scotsmen, taken off the leash at last, roared their fury and charged at full sprint into the ranks of the now panicking Indians. Screaming challenges and curses the scots and nearby Regiments fought with musket butts, bayonets, headbutts, teeth and fists. They were enjoying the fight and butchered mercilessly throats hoarse from shouting. One Scotsman ran towards a group of Hyderbad Infantry. Panicking, one of the soldiers fired his musket at him. He was just able to dodge the ramrod as it flew from the barrel.

He drew closer until he was in striking distance. He grabbed his bayonet and quickly ran it through the throat of one Indian before turning and ramming it into the eye of another. His bayonet lodged in the socket and so he grabbed the next Indian by the uniform and threw his face forward in a headbutt which sent blood flying from both men but the Indian crashed to the ground. The officers too swung their heavy claymore swords and dislodged bone from bone. Almost every soldier was carpeted in blood.

This was the sort of fighting the Scots lived for. The kilts of Aberdeen were at home here on this blood soaked hill.

"Send in the warriors!" Shouted Jida as we watched his first row of musketeers and riflemen fall one by one to the vicious highlanders. His command was echoed back through the ranks. Then, from several hills away, a roar came up. The "traditional" warriors were coming. Brandishing spears, swords, axes, sabres and whatever else they could get their hands on, they charged into the frey. Heads turned to see the men running over the hills towards them chanting and screaming. These were the most vicious and bloodthirsty men Hyderbad had to offer. From the east, similar roars sprung up from behind another set of hills. More "traditionals" were coming. Thousands would soon descend into the madness.

"Get the musketeers and riflemen to fall back to the city!" Shouted Jida. "I'll fall back a bit but I'm staying out here. Tell them to take up position in the city and prepare to defend. Get the artillery out of here as well, have some of the cavalry cover their retreat. The 'traditionals' can take it from here." Jida climbed onto his horse and rode back to a safer distance. This would be some battle he thought.

24-08-2007, 22:18
The Highlanders watched the Traditionals charge with their old spears and bows and instantly knew what to do. In fact, they were already doing it before the order had been given "HIGHLANDERS!!...BACK!! RESERVES!!...FORWARD!!" The Highlanders and four other Regiments who had charged into the enemy heart now withdrew behind the 5 Regiments held in reserve. Well rested and reloaded. Several 6 pounder galloper guns had also been brought forward by fast horse teams and now these and the reloaded Infantry waited for the reckless enemy to approach. "Present!...ARMS!!" The troops all took a half turn as theiy brought muskets to shoulders. The tribesmen were well over the hill now and getting closer. 200 yards, 150 yards, 100 yards. Men hit with arrows and rocks from slings collapsed in the line, their places taken by the ranks behind. 75 yards "FIRE!!!" the bulk of 8,000 muskets and 10 cannon loads of shrapnel were fired similtaneously at the advancing tribesmen at just 70 yards. Not even a smoothbore musket could miss at that range.

24-08-2007, 23:07
Jida had feared this might happen. He had ruined them all, the battle was over, they had lost he thought. He looked up at the flying dust, tinted red with blood as it began to settle again. Then he hurt screams. Not screams of pain though, war screams. The dust settled. A pile of bloodied dead lay on the ground but the "traditionals" were still charging. Many of them too were wounded but still they went head long into the fray. They were within fifty yards of the enemy ranks now. He could see the Alversian frontline shaking from here as the clammered to reload. Others, throwing orders to the wind, had skipped reloading all together and stood, bayonets pointing at the oncoming warriors. Bayonets would do them little now.

"Sir," came a vizier, "what shall I have the cavalry do?"

Jida thought for a moment, then said,

"Tell them to wait just outside of firing range. Send some of them to escort the riflemen, musketeers, and artillery back to the city but the second they get there, tell them to come back return to formation." Then he heard the warriors clash with the Alversian regulars from a distance.

The battle was not over yet.

Cavourna watched with interest as the Traditionals cut into his frontline "Fall back order two please Ensign and bring up the 44th" The 5 Regiments in the frontline began to flee down the slope of the hill slightly, only as far as the reformed and bloodsoaked Scots Regiments screaming their challenge and brandishing claymores bayonets and anything else they could get their hands on. They were still for a while as the batteries of 28 pounders let rip into the exposed Traditionals on the brink of the hill. The Scotsmen waited until the Traditonals, half choked by the dust churned up from the bombardment stumbled to within 100 yards "FIRE!!"

Again it was too close to miss. The 6 pounders added their shrapnel to the choas and through the smoke Cavourna could see Traditionals twisting and collapsing in large numbers. Then he played his elite, the 44th Irish Rangers. They came pounding up the slope, discipline tight but loose enough to allow them to spread out. They added their numbers to the Scots and Indians once the 28 pounders had given them another volley. On the flanks, the light companies continued to pick off one Traditional after the other. The combined Scots and Irish came pounding forward screaming and bellowing as loudly as their lungs would allow.

The Traditionals may have had an advantage over the Indian troops and over the English troops. Against the Scots and the Irish. It was an even playing field.

The smell of blood hung heavy on the air as the dust began to clear again. Bullets sprayed everywhere. There was hardly room to walk amongst the dead bodies. The dust cleared. Now lines of Scots and Irishmen were advancing on the scattered and wounded traditionals.

"Hold!" Yelled one of the warriors. "Reform, reform the line!"

Wounded troops staggered together, dust and blood in their eyes, to remake the line. Some of the fresher soldiers in the rear moved toward the front to relieve some of the injured men. Spearmen in front with their weapons sticking out at the oncoming Alversians, the rest of the troops waiting behind, ready to fight, ready to avenge their fallen comrades.

Then the enemies clashed with their frontlines of spearmen. Driven on by their urge to avenge their dead, their vicious bloodlust, their sense of duty, and most of all, the need to defend their city and their families. The oncoming enemies were halted by the traditionals. Then, slowly they began to push their foes backwards down the slope, made wet and slippery with blood and that morning's dew.

Jida stood atop the hill watching the battle become more and more heated.

"My lord," said one of Jida's viziers, "we have word that troops, both on foot and mounted, are within three or four miles from the north gate of the city. They come from Nagpur, they are here to show their support. They say they have no need for delegation and talk in Dehli and want to fight now. They number roughly 7,600. Some of them have guns and they have brought a few pieces of artillery."

"Excellent!" Said Jida, grinning widely. "Anymore news?" Asked the prince.

"Yes, your father has arrived. He is waiting in the palace. He has given orders to arm every able bodied man in the city in case the Alversians get inside our walls, as a last defense."

Jida was shocked. His father was home. Finally, the burden of ruling was off of him. Surely his father could handle this mess, surely he would make everything right. Jida looked back at the fight. His troops were still pushing the enemy slowly downhill.

One of the warriors in the fray yelled,

"If they try to retreat and have another company fire on us when we're exposed don't let um! Stay close to the enemies so they can't shoot us. If they fall back, follow um!" The others grunted in agreement.

The fighting was getting more and more bloody but the traditionals were the ones taking ground now and it was a rewarding feeling.

The Irish roared and surged forward again, snatched spears out of hand if need be. They fought with teeth with fists and with a courage unlike anything these troops would have encountered.

One Irishman watched a Traditional lunged at him with a spear. He avoided it and swung hard with his own musket butt, crushing the man's skull. Another came from behind and he just simply picked him up and sent him crashing to the ground, kicking him in the head as he went.

At the flanks of the attack, the five regiments which had withdrawn were now brought up. They fired a volley and 100 yards. 7,000 musket balls thudded into the Traditional ranks as the troops on either flank charged. The Traditionals were now surrounded by 17,000 men all of them screaming and slowly forcing the Traditionals into the centre and away from any reinforcements.

Meanwhile, a small group of Skirmishers hiding in the grass, noticed a man sitting on a horse, surrounded by what seemed to be aids and escorts. The men crept through the grass. Their Khaki uniforms keeping them from view. They pointed their rifles at the group and fired. They saw the jewel-encrusted man's horse fall. They saw escorts twist in saddles or simply slide off. They reloaded and fired into those still mounted. Powderless smoke and the breech-loading rifles assured that they couldn't be detected.

Jida watched in horror as his traditionals were surrounded by Alversian troops. Then, from out of the corner of his eye, he saw several khaki colored objects movie.

"Down!" Yelled Jida. The prince's horse bucked and the musketball that was intended for him, struck his horse in her exposed chest. The horse toppled to the ground and Jida along with it. He struck the ground hard. Instinctively he grasped his revolver and pulled it from his holster. Around him his viziers were falling, shrieking, or fleeing. His surviving companions were aiming their weapons but having trouble spotting their attackers.

"Down there," panted Jida, "in the khaki, near the bottom of the hill." His guards took aim, apparently having seen their enemies and began firing. He heard returning gunfire but many of his men were shielded by the prince's horse. The gun battle continued. Jida popped his head out from behind his heaving horse. His revolver cocked and aimed. Bang! Bang! Two bullets flew into the midst. The first missed. The second struck one of the Alversian men in his chest. The man fell backwards and did not move. Jida had fired many guns before but never killed a man. Shock gripped him but he was yanked back into reality after one of his guards grabbed him from behind and pulled back to cover. Gunfire continued and then ceased. Jida looked up, a pile of dead regulars were lying at the base of the hill.

His hand shacking, he replaced his two fired bullets into his revolver.

"Sir, we must retreat to the city. This is a lost fight." Said one of the prince's guards. Jida looked down at the fight. The traditionals were surrounded by still fighting hard. A few had managed to fight their way out of the fight and were running back up to safety on the hill. The Alversians didn't seem to care that a few had gotten away. Jida glanced to his left. One cannon sat there, one of the army's more modern ones.

"I thought I said to get the cannons out of here." Said Jida.

"Yes, my lord, we must have forgotten one." Said the guard.

"Prepare it to fire." Said the prince.

"My lord, we must get out of here." Said one of Jida's viziers.

"Do as I say!" Shouted the prince. A group of men ran over to the cannon and began to prepare it. "You, blow the retreat horn to the traditionals." Said the prince.

"But my lord," said a man holding a horn, "their trapped, encircled."

"Yes, I hope this will motivate them to fight their way out." Said the prince.

The man looked shocked, then blew the horn twice. A general look of suprise came from the group of surviving traditionals, then the turned and began to fight, pushing their way back to the hill. The Alversian troops were least behind them, as long as they watched their backs and flanks they had a chance of escaping alive.

"You," said Jida, "tell the cavalry to get ready for a charge." A man bowed, then ran off in the direction of where the cavalry were stationed.

"The cannon is ready, my lord." Said one man.

"Good, wait for my signal." Said the prince. Some of the Alversians seperating the traditionals from the prince began to part. These vicious warriors were actually pushing their way back out. The Alversians would be unable to fire on the survivors, they'd have just as good a chance at hitting some of their own men in that jumble, they had lost all formation. Some traditionals began to burst out, then more and more. Although the Alversians had the numbers, their riflebutts and bayonets were no match for the hard weapons of these hardened veterens. The Alversians had taken most of the traditionals this day, but a good number of them were staggering uphill towards the prince, many of them wounded. Some had survived.

"Fire the cannon! Right in the middle of the Alversian troops, not where our surviving men our still fighting." Said Jida.

"But sir, we're bound to hit some of our troops." Said one of the men manning the cannon.

"Do it!" Yelled the prince.

A loud roar and a massive cannonball landed in the midst of the Alversian troops, bodies scattered everywhere.

"Bring the cavalry up, make sure they are still out of range of fire. The cavalry will be useless in defending the city. We need to give the troops from Nagpur time to get set up and time for my father to arm the men of the city. Besides, there are no horses on earth stronger than ours and no better riders. 62,000 cavalry are too much for even the Alversians to handle. They will not win this one." The prince paused and watched the battle. Then said, "Prepare the cannon again, we may be able to get two or three more shots off before the traditionals are fully evacuated or dead, we also need time to bring up the horsemen."

Cavourna watched the Traditionals break away from the hilltop encirclement and escape towards the city. It didn't matter, he's torn the heart out of the unit today and that was the real victory. He heard the troops at the top, under fire again, begin to reform quickly and easily, six pounders behind loaded with shrapnel should the enemy be foolish enough to mount a cavalry attack up a hill with rough terrain. His own Alversian and Indian Cavalry, numbering 30,000 were ready as well to jump in if need be.

One of the 6 pounders noticed an enemy cannon firing into the Alversian ranks as they reformed. The gun Sergeant aligned his weapon carefully, aiming for the horizon beyond the gun, knowing that the height would give him an advantage as it had given the enemy. He fired, the gun kicked back and he watched a funnel of sand being thrown up just to the left of the gun.

The Alversians were reloaded and in three ranks. The first knelt with their musket butts jammed into the ground and the other two stood ready to pour fire into the massing Cavalry. The sea of Bayonets would prevent a frontal charge while his own Cavalry and artillery would prevent a flanking attack. The only way was straight up.

Jida ordered the cannon to fire one last time into the reforming Alversian ranks.

"After you fire it again bring the cannon back to the city with the rest. Tell the traditionals they can retreat back to the city. If they are too wounded to fight any longer, give their weapons to other able bodied men." The young prince paused, "Are the cavalry ready?"

One Jida's viziers nodded.

"Good, keep them out of sight and out of firing range. These Alversians are no match for 62,000 of the greatest cavalry the world has every seen." Said Jida.

Wide ranging scouting Units reported a build of Cavalry to Cavourna as he stood at the foot of the hill. The Battle was won and now his troops were fortifying the top to use as a gun platform. The Cavalry were rumoured to be over 50,000 but a realistic number wasn't possible. Regardless. His troops stayed on the hill and so long as they were there in square formation, even all the Cavalry of India would be powerless to break through. Already, the first 24 pounders were being brought labouriously up the hill to their newly dug positions. The city wasn't far away now. And his own Cavalry had yet to be brought into the fray.

The cry of "CHARGE!" sprung up from behind the hill, the much feared calvary troops stormed the position atop the hill killing any who had been trying to set up artillery there. The cavalry came thundering down the other side of the hill straight at the Alversian infantry who they encircled and began to slaughter. 15,000 more cavalry had still been held back, behind the hill, out of sight and out of range.

"My lord," came a voice, "now we must leave. The cavarly will do their job."

Jida turned and then shook his head then said, "We will stay until every last Alversian pig is dead."

He looked back at the battle, the cavarly were killing every soldier in their path. Even the exhausted yet vicious highlanders could not stand up to their might. Surely this was the greatest cavalry in the world. Brandishing sabres and one shot pistols, the horsemen were killing all in their paths.

The Alversian/Indian Cavalry unit was caught by the Hyderbad charge although it was able to order a withdrawal with minimal losses. The Alversians and Indians were riding strong European horses, far superior to the Indian breeds and so they were able to open a small gap. The Cavalry retreated towards the advancing Squares of the Infantry, hoping to seek safety behind the Bayonets.

The 24 pounders began to fire again into the massed ranks of cavalry, added to the sniper fire they began to take their toll of the charging horses. Added to the smoke and fire of the shells, it could only be a matter of time before the horses, if not their riders, fled from the unfamiliar noise.

The Persian and Hyderbadian (correct adj.?) cavarly rampaged straight into the Alversian infantry. Despite their bayonets the cavalry managed to break their lines and charge nearly straight into the center. Ontop of the 15,000 cavalry who had been left out of sight behind the hill, another 5,000 broke off just after the first charge and joined them behind the hill. The cavalry slowly encircled the infantry square and decimated any in their path. The infantry square was crumbling. Many of the Alversian infantry fled where they could. Even the feared higlanders couldnt't stand up to the cavarly. All of the cavalry watched the Alversian horseman nervously to mkae sure they didn't try to charge them from behind. The enemy cannons wouldn't dare fire at their horsemen now, they were too close to the Alversian infrantry. Things were looking good.

OOC: I have 20,000 troops in Infantry Square (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_%28formation%29) formation. Do you know that you have just Godmodded my response to that attack:
1. Unless your Horses are steel proof, they can't just waltz through three ranks of sharpened bayonets like they aren't there
2. 20,000 against 40,000 means that in square formation I have the advantage
3. Highlanders were trained not to flee from enemy attacks even IF they broke through the square
4. Due to a VERY close range volley from the square Indian Horses, which were not historically trained to withstand fire, would panic and at the very least check their advance. Same for the shrapnel fired
5. Due the the fact that there are Bayonets on all sides, they can't just be flanked like that.
6. I thought Persia had withdrawn her cavalry north
