The World of today still contains many mysteries. Strange lands, wrapped in fog and mist, untouched by industrial civilisation, still exist. They have remained untouched, and unknown to the world. They are resident not only to natives, but to great wealth, in the form of untapped reserves of minerals, flora and fauna.

One such land is Halako. Discovered not so long ago by a Weccanfelt junker, the land soon saw explorers at its icy shores. This land was very similar to the land we call Alaska, both in climate and wildlife. At first, these were friendly men with a desire simply to experience the new. But then came the people whose desire it was to exploit the riches.

They came in their ships, testing for offshore fossil fuels – they were not disappointed. Slowly, the map of these islands began to become complete. When faced with such riches, the Weccanfelt government formed the South East Halako Company, an expedition whose job was to plant the first seeds of Weccanfelt rule in these islands. The colonies of Leax Mountain, Gebróðra Valley and Cape Gelyndu were formed to lay claim to these islands. Soon followed Damirans, who formed the Protectorate of Northern Halako to the north of the Weccanfelt colonies. It was only a matter of time before yet more would follow...

Claims:

I don’t want a throng of nations on these islands. I am after 4-6 claims in total, including mine. I would prefer if you at least made an effort to use proper English, by using a spell checker, and I would also prefer if you didn’t just lodge your claims, and never come back. If this does indeed happen, I may consider just letting someone else more active take control of your colony.

Please submit your claims in this format:

Name of Nation:
Name of Colony:
Type of Government:
Resources: (see below)

The land you claim isn’t final, as you can still expand, as long as it is in reasonable amounts. Remember, there are plenty of natives on the islands, which won’t like it when foreigners come in and declare their homeland theirs. Its a first come first served policy.

Preferably I’d like a Utopian Commonwealth nation to claim, just to spice things up. So the a UC nation to claim gets priority, if they are interested.

Resources:

This being a colonisation rp, there are of course raw resources just begging to be exploited. These are shown on the map. You are able to choose what resources are in these areas. However, there are some things to take into consideration:

-For Low Quality Mining Areas, you can choose two resources to occupy that area. For Medium and High Quality areas however, you can only choose one resource, which cannot be changed once you declare what resource is there. Each area is separated by a line. If the pattern changes, so can the resources.
-If you invade and annex the lands of another colony, the resources stay the same as they were under the previous owner. If the area you are annexed is virgin land however, you can specify the resources.
-The HQM areas that are near rivers are placer areas. Therefore, they only produce HQM resources when you have gold, or to a lesser extent Platinum. Also, keep in mind that Uranium and Cinnabar deposits poison rivers.
-Areas that contain more than one type of grade of mining are basically two areas for the price of one.
-No matter what resource you choose, you will have the same net worth in resources. Therefore, you will produce more material if you choose gold over Platinum, but you will still make as much money as you would have if you had chosen Platinum. This applies to all resources, save the renewable ones.
-If you want a material which isn’t mentioned in the list (see below), send me a Telegram, unless it is a fictional material, in which case the answer is no.

Common Sea Resources: Seals, Whales, Salmon, Shellfish, Ice

Common Land Resources: Timber, Salmon (in rivers), Arable Land (under timber forests), Permafrost (on higher ground), Natives

Hydrocarbon Products (exp. Coal): Oil, Natural Gas, Peat (on land only)

Low Grade Mining: Iron, Copper, Nickel, Coal, Limestone, Building Quality Stone

Mid Grade Mining: Bauxite, Potassium, Opals, Silver, Cinnabar

High Grade Mining: Gold, Platinum, Gems, Tungsten, Uranium, Titanium

FAQ:

-Can I send in my entire army and take over the entire island chain?
In theory, yes, but even if you did take over the entire island, you’d have a number of nations on your tail, seeking blood.

-I’m not going to use my claim’s resources; do I still have to specify my resources?
Not really, you’ll probably specify them as the most useless resource you can think of anyway.

-Can I N00k the island?
No. Try to refrain from using strategic methods. If you want to drop small amount of nerve gas/anthrax on native villages, be my guest.

-Do I have to rp setting up industry?
Yes. It needn’t be a novel’s worth of words, a paragraph or two will do. Just keep logistics in mind.

-How big is the native population, and where are the villages?
I would say sizable. As for the villages, they’d tend to be on the coast. They live off the sea, you see.

-How advanced are they?
Basically, they are Intuits/Eskimos without rifles, or drugs, or anything like that. They are damned good at what they do though.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with fighting over someone's claim. It's just the period of peaceful colonisation of the islands is over.

Oh, and the common resources, your not just limited to one, you can have them all if it's feasable. Plus, if a resource area is separated from another area, you can designate different resources for that area.

Official Statement
Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy
To: Government of the Free Echo Islands

It has recently come to the attention of the Denomination that you are attempting to expand into a newly discovered group of islands. While normally this would be no cause for concern, the location and character of the islands has caused some further investigation in our records.

As it turns out, the area which you are attempting to claim is Manthian sovereign territory by right. An until-recently mysterious document left in Manthian archives by an eighteenth century explorer, Comte Francis of Alexandria, clearly indicates that his party landed on said territory and claimed it in the name of Manth. While until recently Manthian historians were puzzled by the record (not entirely lucid, as the Comte was a notoriously unstable individual), the recent rediscovery of the islands has allowed them to connect the dots and unequivocally identify the Far Echo Islands claim with this territory.

Due to the unexpected nature of this find, the Far Echo Islands is hereby given eight hours to acknowledge Manthian sovereignty over this portion of the islands, and subsequently a one-week period to remove any personnel and equipment. Failure to comply will find the colonists in breach of Manthian law and subject to all due penalties thereof.

Regards,

Port Said

"Easy.. Easy... Right just a little more."

The Nakil ground to a halt snugly up against its neatly loaded brethren in the belly of a Gabin-class tank lander. A soldier popped out of the turret.

"That good?"

"Yeah, now help me fasten it down. Where are these things going again?"

"Halako. Apparently someone we don't like has set up shop there."

The engineer supervising the loading chuckled.

"Someone we don't like... well that narrows it down a whole lot."

"Some place called the Far Echo Islands. Never heard of them myself either, but apparently they're friends with those Cazelian hicks."

"Really? Well can't really say I feel sorry for 'em, then."

The soldier shook his head.

"I know. Cazelia, hah, talk about living proof of survival of the fittest... or I guess in this case, the opposite, eh?"

"Hah! Yeah. Anyway, let's get the next one loaded..."

SIC:

It was at dawn, early in the colonisation of the islands, where the Weccanfelt colonists were embarking on the first steps toward subjugating the native peoples. The merchant vessel 'Gadrian' was one such colonist. It was the vessel of a fleet, meeting with the tribes and engaging relations with them. It was a day like any other, save for one incident.

Their first destination was a newly discovered village. As they dropped anchor, and sent boats out to the village to sell their wares, the everlasting sun bearing down on them, they brought the main goods that the Weccanfelts were selling to the islanders: Alcohol. And lots of it.

Once in the village, the head of the expedition gave the chief a sip of the drink, then gave them some kegs as a 'gift', then returning to the ship, ready to head towards their next destination.

The next village had been visited before. A stench of death lingered around the place, and as the Weccanfelts landed, a number of natives came and begged for more alcohol. After being told that this year the crops had failed, they gave them a couple of kegs for extortionate prices, as well as some food to keep them going. As the Weccanfelts left, they had finished the penultimate step in subjugation. All they needed now was the replace the chief and his shaman with a Weccanfelt station and a education centre.

The third destination was another recently discovered village. However, what the Weccanfelt merchants didn't know was that these had a myth that white demons will come to take their children and cause a famine (which in a way was true). Therefore, when the boats came in with the alcohol, they were greeted with a spear thrown, which impaled one of the landing crew.

They responded with three shots from a shotgun, then left to get the injured man to the infirmary. For the village, a deal of men had been wounded, and were likely to die. But despite that, they thought they had scared off the demons. But the Weccanfelts weren't going to take the death of one of it's people lightly.

A couple of hours later, four strange birds appeared, bringing with them a strange buzzing noise. They each were painted blue, with strange marking, and neither flapped its wings. They thought it was a sign from their ancestors, that this year's harvest was to be plentiful. And it was to be, though most of them wouldn't be around to harvest it.

Inside of the planes, there sat a Weccanfelt pilot, who commanded the other three. As they neared the village, their noses pointed down, and the wings began to fire bullets at the gathered party on the ground.

On the ground, a panic spread as clouds of red mist erupted from the villagers. They began to run away from the place where the people were getting hit, but the mysterious things followed them, clouds erupting from the soil as well as from the people. But as the noses of the planes began to lift again, and the people hid inside their houses, it seemed the onslaught was about to end...

Inside one of the huts, a large family hid inside, hoping to ride out the onslaught. As the rattling of the guns began to stop, however, they thought that it was all over...

Just then, a metal object similar to a fish fell through the roof. A strange noise could be heard, and a small trinket on the back of it was spinning quickly. The head of the household picked up a stick, and poked the object. nothing happened. He wondered what this object was.

But as his body decomposed into a red pile, he suddenly realised what it was...

As four explosions erupted around the village, and the planes buzzed off, some of the survivors emerged from the ruins, and began to curse the planes. But each of them still had one perfectly fine bomb left, as well as a couple of bursts worth left of bullets...

The planes suddenly lifted their noses up into the air, then did a loop, once again facing the village again. The bullets once again began to ricochet around the village, and as the noses once again lifted, four bombs were dropped, causing yet more death and destruction...

By the end of the attack, five sixes of the village had been slaughtered. The rest soon starved to death. This was the fate of any village who opposed Weccanfeld...

But as news of massacres spread across the isles, and the Damirans set up camp, exoduses began to begin in the northern reaches of the Weccanfelt holdings to the Damiran holdings, where they wouldn't be either drugged or shot. Some of these exoduses were found, and ended up on the bottom of the sea. But many of them made it. None of them could prove that the Weccanfelts had destroyed the villages, but they'd rather not take the chance of finding out for sure.

It came as a fluke some would say, just a strange encounter others would add and all of them would be wrong.

The lands of Halako. Discovered by a Weccanfeldian junker in the far north they were filled with minerals and various other resources. That mattered little though for a nation that prided itself on having everything it needed.

But there were other points that were taken into account.

This new land could provide wealth for Weccanfeld, wealth that could disrupt the fragile balance and beyond that, there was no doubt in the minds of many just what would happen with the people of Halako.

A decision was made.

Reluctant, but understanding that some things need to be done, The Principality readied itself. Colonial ventures had been a touchy subject after Alestra, but they left not that to discourage them. Lessons have been learned out of failure and they intended to make the best of them.

It did not take long for the navy to track down the mysterious islands. Some would even say that The Principality managed to establish a presence there first, but much of the subject is shrouded in doubt and question.

It went well.

In the frozen north they found and unblemished land and people who were frozen in time. First contact, of which they were wary, was easily made. The tribes in the north were suffering from famine and the tons of crates filled to the brim with food made much to the relations between natives and foreigners. Using natives to guide them and act as interprets much progress was made.

They rallied to the flag.

A major objective for The Principality was organizing the natives. It did not take long for the tribes to form a union of sorts and get introduced to just what The Principality stood for. With help from their friends they even started on building a city and schools and hospitals started appearing. The more daring ones found themselves learning the way of the warrior, for not all the land was under the protection of their friends.

The wails that reach their ears.

It did not take long for the fledging new state to hear news about the atrocities in the south. The tribes realized they had no hope of competing with the foreigners. There was only one option left and with all in agreement they offered the hand of friendship to their protectors. No longer a disparate organization they were now a protectorate under Damirez.

The wall of steel.

And news kept coming. The ‘others’ used guns and drugs trying to make the people submit. Thousands after thousands of refugees found their way to the north. And the army became an even higher priority.

To compensate, The Principality provided a fleet. A wall of steel to protect the natives from outsiders and escort the incoming refugees. Soon, after rigorous training, native piloted ships would see the seas. In these uncertain times they could only hope and work for a better future.

They planned.

The colonists arrived by a large steel hull sail boat which was equipped with solar generator electric motors. About 400 in number, they came either to simply go on an adventure or perhaps just find some place to live that was a little less crowded than the domestic cities, some came as prospectors, some as conservationist, some as students, all as Echo Islanders.

The ship set anchor out about a half kilometer, and the first people came ashore and raised an Echo Islands flag upon the beach. What was to become of them remained to be seen, as for now, they began setting up a temporary encampment and starting a fire.

Official Diplomatic Response

The Far Echo Islands does not recognize the Manthian claim. We do not see the validity of the document you have presented. We see no wording that would specify the particular island that we claim. While we believe the document is authentic and does refer to the Halako Islands we do not see that it is descriptive enough to specify which island your said explorer claimed. Due to the nature of this document and the fact that it should entitle you to some Haloko real estate, we would like to propose a joint colony or perhaps the sale of a small portion of ours for a as of yet undisclosed sum of money.

I am pleased to see that military action could be avoided in these pristine islands. War is a terrible destructive thing, and there is no need for it in this natural preserve. However, I must conclude that such a dramatic downsizing will adversely affect our colonists’ way of life. Therefore I ask for a light compensation of 10 billion USD is paid to the Far Echo Islands government as economic compensation for their loss.

Given that there are only four hundred TFEI colonists arriving, we find an amount of ten billion dollars (25 million per colonist) to be excessive for simply any 'disruption' that our presence may cause, especially in light of the fact that Manthian presence will likely be beneficial overall - no offense is intended, but Manthian industry and economy dwarfs anything the Far Echo Islands can offer, and as such can offer far greater opportunities. Nevertheless, in the spirit of cooperation, the UCPLC has authorized a one-time payment of twenty-five thousand Manthian markas (44,000 Universal Standard dollars, 182,824 TFEI ice diamonds) to any colonists who can prove they have been adversely affected by the Manthian presence.*

****

Meanwhile, the first Manthian ships were reaching the new lands. Instead of disgorging civilian colonists, solar generators, and other such gadgets, however, the Manthian ships unloaded soldiers and military engineers, as well as various pieces of military or heavy industrial equipment. And tanks.

Lots of tanks.

When the S.S. Raven IV landed it everyone was frightend and uncertian of this Kuronan Colony. People had come for new opportunties new resources. Mostly sticking to the basics and ease. Himeko Ito was the new ruling Princess of this colony. She splashed a bucket full of cold water on her as her method of bathing her self. The flag of Kurona flew high in the wind, bellow it a blue flag with a great raven on it. "A day for Kuronans. A day for pride." The sound of thunder made her end her bath quickly and run inside. "Mako?"

"Right here, my Hime." He kissed her with great pation.

*War Room, the Ice Box, New St. Petersburg, Arctica Province, the Far Echo Islands*

The Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as the Arch Military Advisor and the Grand Arbiter sat at a long oval table and scrutinized satellite images of the territory they had ceded to New Manth, they looked nervously upon the tanks and troops that moved in. This was very surprising. The recent rejection for compensation of losses had angered them somewhat, and this was really pushing the limits of what the high profile men and women considered acceptable. They had chartered a peaceful, conservative colony, and New Manth seemed to be setting up a military base. It was a most complicated situation: for one, the colonists whished to make a peaceful existence, on the other, it would show lack of sufficient government no to take action to protect its citizens.

“I propose that we send in a battalion of the army, maybe the first mechanized, that’d send those Manthians a message!” Exclaimed the two star General Lokar Topansii.

“No, no, the Manthians have no reason to attack, there is no need to alter these people’s way of life.” Said conservationist and Admiral Anne Wiko.

“Why not the 5th Covert operational tactical Marine group, it’s a large enough group to defend our claim, well trained, and they could take on a group twice their size. They can keep back and out of the colonists lives and not have too much impact on the land itself either. I believe it is the perfect compromise.” Said Four Star General Tom Logan, the other joint chiefs of staff and paused at this, and there was a general nod of heads around the room.

“All in favor of General Logan’s plan say ‘Aye’” the Grand Arbiter said breaking the silence.
“Aye!” Came the reply, unanimously.

*Near Luke Beach, New Harbor, Halako Islands*

The amphibious transport ships broke the waves against their hulls, and the tanks’ chains holding them in place were being tested. The giant fans struggled to keep the ships straight toward shore against the strong crosswind. But nonetheless the amphibious craft slammed ashore. The 5th rolled out onto the beachhead and began setting up base. A Roe Class battleship, which was essentially an Iowa class modified to hold the amphibious craft, stood 5 nautical miles offshore. The 200 men of the 5th Group moved out in groups of five, three armed with AKM’s and MP7A1’s, one with a SAW and an MP7A1, and one with a .50 caliber sniper rifle and an MP7A1. Behind them came SU-100 tanks, outdated, but still capable and then several jeeps with dual naval style Browning .50 cal double barreled machine guns. They towed trailers with everything from basic living provisions to pieces of portable runway that the soldiers planned to set up at the new base. A helicopter zoomed over head and dropped off a large package of supplies then left headed back towards the ship. The 5th also had backhoes and bulldozers to setup a semi-permanent fortress. They were 15 kilks north of the main colony, and ready to defend them if, though hopefully it would not be necessary.

*New Harbor colony, Halako Islands*

About 100 of the colonists filled out the Manthian form right away. They were all true claims, most of them miners and prospectors. The colony had been pretty well accepted by the natives who spoke an only slightly modified form of Arkik, the primary language of CFEI. By now the colonists had moved inland and began making log cabins to live in semi-permanently.

Cigar smoke and music floated through the air at the headquarters of the 288th Mechanized Infantry, recently erected. Both officers and men were celebrating - just the other day, word had come in of Manth's total victory against the Northern Baltic forces on the island of Cyprus. The enemy had finally been driven out of his last hiding-holes in the Mediterranean, and mainland Manth was safe from further attack. Soldiers, many of them veterans of the first Baltic invasion, cheered the news of dozens of Manthian fleets sallying forth to take the fight away from Manth and to the enemy's own doorstep.

Compared to that huge conflict, with millions of men and vehicles being thrown into battle on either side, the posting to a far-off colonial possession was tiny at best. Still, the deployment was nearly complete, and twenty thousand soldiers would soon be on the ground to complete the pacification of Manth's newest territory. First, the native population had to be dealt with. History had often shown that aboriginal people made poor mass workers, and that seemed to be the case here as well - no use trying to use primitive hunters to operate the heavy industrial equipment that was being shipped in en masse. Neither were the Manthians interested in anything the natives might have had to trade. Instead, the aboriginals were simply rounded up, taken from their homes and possessions, and shoved aboard one of the massive Pepperbox LSVs that had accompanied the force. The Manthians were going to no real lengths to explain to the natives why they had to leave their ancestral homes and be crammed aboard an increasingly jammed, miserably uncomfortable transport - they were simply being rounded up and forced aboard.

Individual resisters were simply manhandled onto the ship, but for any villages that chose as a whole to try to fight the newcomers - quite a few, given the Manthians' chosen method of 'resettlement' - were dealt with immediately and effectively. Heavy Nakil tanks fitted with flamethrowers rolled through the villages, roasting men, women and children alike alive in their homes. Helicopters followed the tanks, hunting down any natives who might have escaped and gunning them down. After the extermination, burial teams came in and cleaned up, while the military moved on to the next target.

With the natives rapidly ceasing to be a problem, construction in earnest was started up on airfields, port facilities, and roads to serve the mining and extraction industries that would soon set up shop in Overseas Economic Zone 6.

Meanwhile, the forms arriving at the Zone 6 office were being duly processed. Assuming everything checked out, and of course that war didn't break out in the intervening time, each colonist would soon receive a check for twenty-five thousand markas, tax-free, courtesy of the Union Bank.

Do not attempt to threaten the Greater Economic Union. We have been generous in dealing with your nation so far. Perhaps too generous. Know that the Union does not break its word nor go back on its agreements, and so long as you abide by them as well, relations can remain amicable between our territories.

Should you presume to take any 'retaliatory action', however, Manth will not hesitate to wipe your entire colony off the face of the world.

These people whom you are inquiring about have infringed upon sovereign Manthian territory - as such, we are taking measures to remove them. As you may have noticed, our intent is not to kill them, merely to relocate them. Only when they presume to attack Manthian forces are they destroyed, and rightly so.

We were planning to dump the remainder in Damirezan territory, since they seem to find some use for them. However, we will be more than happy to turn them over to you as well, so long as you can assure us that they will not violate our territory again.

We do ask that the Manthian government do ship the native to our colony instead of the Damirezans. We will surely give them a better life than them. They will stay in our territory, and they are nearly certain to stay there to avoid death by Manthian rifles. I must say though, your excessive military presence in these Islands is troubling. We maintain a peace keeping force, but your force is very large. We would like some reassurance that they will not be used for aggressive dealings with our colonists.

We do not agree with your relocation policy and your attitude towards the natives, however let it be known that we will welcome any refugees with open arms. They have a place here.

SIC:

From: Andrew Wallenstein,
To: The Far Echo Islands,

We would like proof that the natives will be treated better in what you call your colony. The Protectorate of North Halako is indeed under our protection and benefits of full membership in our Federation, but it retains a far greater degree of autonomy than a mere colony.

We have acknowledged them as our equals, what have you done? Instead of tending to more important matters, such as actually getting them out of the territory you so generously ceded to New Math, you involve yourself in political schemes that bring little benefit to the suffering natives.

---

The South was utterly compromised. On one hand two nations that had only profit and death in mind, on the other one that cared more about politics than anything else. There was some promise from the country of Angaor, but there was doubt about how much they could rely on them.

Action had to be taken and the already forming native army reinforced.

That is acceptable. Expect their arrival in anywhere from two to four days, once we have had time to round them all up.

***

True enough, two days later the ship cast off and began to steam towards the Far Echo Islands territory. Pulling up at any facilities available (or just on the beach if none had yet been constructed, as was probably the case), the vessel began disgorging its human cargo.

It was a rather ghastly site for any TFAE men present. Many of these people had been hustled onto the vessel days or sometimes up to a week ago. They had been given no time to gather food or belongings - most had only the clothes on their back, and some not even that. And then they had been packed into the ship like sardines, without even room to lie down in most cases, and simply left there until the ship was ready to sail. No food or warm clothing had been provided, and as the natives were forced out again it wasn't an uncommon sight to find a body packed in among them, dead for several days but still packed in with the surrounding live people. The remainder were starving, stank, were often sick, and in some cases were too weak to do much other than stagger off the ship and collapse on shore.

The Manthian military was known for its harshness and unquestioning discipline - at least, in the ideal - and didn't exactly drill respect for human rights into its men, but even the sailors were uncomfortable with what they were taking part in. A small group of men approached whoever was in charge of the FAE men at the landing. There was a small amount of fidgeting and worried looks back at the ship, before the first man worked up the nerves to speak up.

"Uh, just so you know," he said, "all this - we didn't know that this was what they were going to have us do, you know."

He gestured back to where the natives were being forced off the boat. A small stack of bodies lay to the side, those who had died in the miserable conditions along the way.

"We didn't have any extra food to give them." another explained. "I found out that they hadn't got any water either two days ago, and we all gave out what we could find... not really enough."

He sighed and closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry. I do want you guys to know, this isn't what any of us signed up for. Maybe the Army guys are okay with this, but we all agreed that we want out."

He snuck a nervous look at the ship behind him.

"We thought we might jump ship here, since it's probably the only chance we'll get in a while, and we heard you guys aren't exactly friendly anymore with the Manthian CDA. Um, if that's okay with you? There's a few more of us, but we didn't want to leave all at once."

No, sorry. Officially your ships will not have permission to enter Manthian waters - so far, only TFAE (& Maldorian if they get in) ships are allowed in. However, you could always send them in covertly. Short of being seen by soldiers or aircraft, there's not much in place yet that could reveal their presence (i.e. no wankradarz of doom have yet been built).

Very well. Thank you for the quick reply. Concerning the native issue, we have a few choices. A) We will use them for target practice. B) Ship them to neighboring colones unharmed. C) Shephard them into a small 'reservation' on the island. I believe option B is the best of the above. If you have a different idea, just tell me.

Regarding the price of the island, what would you say about one billion USD. I say that that is reasonable, but if you disagree, just state a different price.

Halako Waters, Undisclosed Location

The convoy stopped just short of entering what was now New Manth territorial waters. Recent reports has shown that numerous local tribes were fleeing from the region and it was painfully obvious what was the cause of all this.

So far only a handful of them made it to the safety of the Northern Halako Protectorate, but many more were coming and it was for this purpose that this fleet was here.

Every ship, every boat that belonged to the natives in the North was currently transporting people of the island. It was a carefully crafted plan made by the recently instated government of the Protectorate. If caught, there was no chance of proving their involvement and even then there were only a few miles the refugees needed to travel before getting to the safety of the fleet.

They knew that they would not be able to save them all, as some would never reach the shore while others would choose to stay and fight, but many, mostly women and children, had to be taken out at all cost.

There were however others working to get the natives out before it was too late. Fast boats belonging to The Principality fleet in conjuncture with helicopters worked relentlessly, carefully avoiding detection, but knowing that the risk was always present.

It was a viable solution for now, given the relative lack of detection means, but it was obvious that it would not last for ever and as such speed was of the essence.

Location: Aboard the Pacifica Oil Corporation ship Deep Blue,Southern Palona Oilfield

Captain Justin O'Leary, a tall, muscular man with a dark complexion that clashed with his Irish surname, stood on the bridge of the Deep Blue, an oil exploration ship owned by Pacifica Oil Corporation, one of the leading New Potomac oil and gas exploration and development corporations. A former New Potomac Navy man, O'Leary had left the service some years ago for what were billed as "personal reasons." The true story, known only to a few, was that O'Leary's various jobs after leaving the service had been arranged by New Potomac's shadowy External Intelligence Agency (EIA).

Standing next to O'Leary was a man with looks typical of New Potomac's melting pot society. A little shy of 6 feet tall, in athletic shape and with brown hair, brown eyes and skin color that would fit in pretty much anywhere other than maybe Sub-Saharan Africa or Iceland, the man went by the unlikely (and almost certainly false) name of John Odysseus. Though he didn't have a decoder ring or anything else to show he worked for EIA, O'Leary knew the young man (how old was he 25? 35?) was an EIA agent. Given his mission, he probably belonged to one of the EIA branches that did not exist, at least not officially.

"How goes the oil survey?" Asked the agent.

"Very well, actually. These are some pretty rich oil and gas fields. Our first rig will be arriving next week. The contracts for the other rigs are still being negotiated, but we think we should be able to win the bids for at least one more."

"Excellent. This looks like this could be quite a profitable venture for our country. And if we are able to find what we think is out here, this will be a really succesful project, indeed."

O'Leary knew enough not to ask what the younger man was looking for. In this line of work, a lot of times it was best not to know.

"So," he asked the agent, "Do you think we need to worry about any of the nations that have staked their claims to these islands?"

"I doubt it. They seem to have enough of their own grudges and disputes to occupy them. That's one of the good things about a country like New Potomac- no enemies, no international disputes, more interested in commerce than land grabs and beating our neighbors over the head over some stupid old conflict. Nobody really pays attention to us- we're just a bunch of greedy capitalists who only care about their pocketbooks."

They both laughed at that.

"So, now what?" O'Leary asked.

"Nothing for you now, Captain. I'm going to take a trip in with your cook when he next goes shopping for fresh food on one of these islands. I need to look around and get my bearings, as it were."

The young agent headed below. O'Leary turned back to his work, but he couldn't help wonder- just what was out here that was worth involving the EIA and an agent who, frankly, scared O'Leary more than a little bit?

"No need for the ride, Captain." Said one of the crew members.

"It'll take us a couple of days to buy everything we need. Plus, we want to take a little R&R and hit the bars and such in town. I also need to meet with company representatives to discuss how exploration in the oil field on the island is going.

The Deep Blue will be docking here in a few days, anyways, so we'll get on board then.

"If you're still around tonight, you'll probably find us hanging out at whatever the seediest bar is around here. We'll buy you a drink."

With that, John Odysseus and the other 3 crew members from the Deep Blue headed into the tropical din of Banu.

Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy
To Qadesh and Maldorians

While as always we recommend leaving adequate forces to defend your homeland against any threat, we would welcome Qadeshi presence here as well.

New Manth has made an arrangement with the Far Echo Islands, which we fully intend to honor on our end. So long as peace otherwise reigns on these islands, they have nothing to fear from us. However, we would consider them taking any hostile action against the Maldorians, or Qadeshi for that matter, as a breach of our trust... in which case we would be, ever so regretfully, forced to intervene.

In other words, we have your back.

David Edward, the Qadeshi Dictator, weighed his choices..."I heartily approve the sending of 100,000 men and 500 naval vessels to aid our allies." And with that, his will was done...of course his ally could either increase or decrease his wishes...

OOC: Since I promised to hold the fort, so to say, to Weccanfeld I'll be the one making annoying comments. Quadesh, I kinda doubt that you can support such a large force outside your borders. Plus it's a large number for a country that's not even at war.

SIC:

From: Protectorate of Northern Halako

Subject: Current situation

Greetings from the recently instated government of Northern Halako. Following the procedures of the Federation we have been allowed a free hand in dealing with local matters.

As such, at the suggestion of our Principality advisers, we would like to invite your nations to a conference that might decide the future of these islands. Although we have our reserve regarding your colonization attempts, we are forced to admit that the other alternative presented by several countries is much worse.

In short we would like to create an agreement between our nations, a Pact of Halako so to say, to insure mutual protection and stability in the region.

We eagerly await your reply.

---

News Report, Halako Radio Station Prime.

"... In a prestigious ceremony today, the council of elders has announced the inauguration of the Northern Halako Armed forces. Although currently limited in size, the army is expected to grow and become a worthy part of the Federation Armed Forces."

It wasn't exactly true. It was indeed true that now Northern Halako had an army, but the only major part the Halakiens had provided was the soldiers, many of the officers and equipment coming from other parts of the Federation, mostly from The Principality. It was however true that the small army was in fighting shape and soon it would be enough to protect the lands of Northern Halako.

OoC: 100,000 troops is not unacceptable, in my view. It is within my population's acceptable man-power strengths [assuming 75 Billion pop.] and I had a force of 55,000 on Cyprus when my population was basically 1/3 to 1/2 of that. Furthermore, my country is in a heightened state of readiness [at least mobilization-wise] seeing as Qadesh 'has' declared war, to end another conflict. I used the lowest end of the scale given, because400,000 in very much out of my countries reach, even with its current status. Honestly, We are supporting our allies in their territorial campaign.

I appreciate you holding the fort down.

OOC: The issue is not with you having forces that large, I have no issue with that. The problem is they're a long way from home and it's quite a huge effort to maintain those numbers on the field. A logistic, financial and planning nightmare. Plus, you take into account only the men you're dispatching, you also need to consider that those ships don't man themselves and that there's virtually no infrastructure in Southern Halako.

OoC: If I halved those numbers [50,000], and brought along the proper logistics and civilian settlers [say 10,000] to begin basic techniques to at least keep these men supplied [such as the camps arising around Roman border walls] In essence colonizing a small bit or the island for my soldiers to be supplied, possibly building a small port and staffing that to allow Qadeshi ships to re-supply my troops in the need should arise. Furthermore, do you suppose $5 Billion would be a good starting investment for this small of an operation? Do you suppose this may be within acceptable limits?

OOC: I tend to agree with Damirez here. Logistically, maintaining forces of this size in new colonies like these is pretty much impossible. Very simple things like disposing of human waste would swamp the primitive infrastructures present. Look at the problem the US, for example, has with keeping its troops supplied in Iraq, and that's with a fairly modern Iraqi infrastructure connected to mega-ports in Kuwait.

The general figure I have seen quoted is that it can cost up to $10,000 per day to maintain one soldier with the basics in an environment without the proper infrastructure.

The colonists watched in horror as the brutally transported natives. Some even drown on the way to the shore, some died of exhaustion once ashore, however, the majority made it ashore, alive, if starving and sick. The effects of New Manthian brutality were easily evident; bruises, oozing wounds, gashes, broken bones, like a horror movie, yet all too real. The native were well received, they spoke an only slightly modified version of Arkik, the language of the Far Echo Islands. Some of the natives had to stay at the main settlement, but most went and rejoined their own realities on this part of the island.

Manthian Territory

Industry was really starting to kick into high gear, now... prospectors and geologists moved across the land, identifying deposits and veins of various ores. In their wake, heavy mining machinery was moved in, stripping the earth to lay bare the valuable metals or boring massive pit mines to reach deeper resources.

From there, a network of roads and rails was slowly growing up, mostly leading to the de facto economic center of the new colony, the aptly named settlement at Pier One. From there, goods would be processed in the new factories springing up, or simply loaded directly onto vessels for transport to markets around the world.

And on a more military note, an airfield had been constructed and a wing of fighters was on its way to base at the island. A few Khan missile cars along the rail network would round out the defenses.

For reference, my forces comprise one mechanized division (~20,000 men), four antishipping missile batteries (16 Khan missiles, 40 Sledgehammer IIs), and ~90 aircraft. There are a few subs lurking around the area as well, but they are unlikely to figure in combat unless your battleship somehow survives.

We see that despite our ultimatum, the war against the Maldorians continues. Thus, with regrets, we must inform you that our two governments are now at war.

Precisely sixty-five seconds after the message was transmitted, the gears began to grind. Orders were transmitted by secure laser-based datalink across the Manthian lines, and tanks and APCs fired up their engines and began crossing the TFEI border. Shukusei jets began to roar off the concrete of the hastily constructed airstrip near the north end of the Manthian territory, while, circling above the Manthian territory, a Sariel stealth bomber released its ordnance... eight cruise missiles rocketed off towards the main barracks, any port or communications facilities, and any other inportant pieces infrastructure the FAE colonists had managed to construct.

Meanwhile, the lone TFEI battleship was a threat, but not one that could not be dealt with, since the Islanders had neglected to send any kind of escort or air defense vessels to accompany it... a crucial oversight in the age of missile warfare, but then, they probably weren't expecting a shooting war. It was no matter... they would learn the mistake soon enough.

At Shore Battery Number Four, one missile after another screamed into the air and towards the enemy battleship. They would accelerate to over Mach 4 before, hopefully, slamming into the vessel and turning it into a flaming hulk. Before all was done, twenty missiles targeted the lone vessel in what was probably overkill, but was nonetheless necessary... should the battleship survive, its guns would be a formidable foe indeed for shore-based infantry.

Fortunately, there was enough ordnance targeting the thing to make that distinctly unlikely.

IC:
The Echo Islanders moved around quickly and confused. Why on Earth were the New Mantians attacking them. The air forces that were present, a few harriers and a dozen Cobra class heliocopters took off and headed into the New Manthian colony, intent on destroying everything they could. They fired missiles at the shore batteries and a the bases, and at the industrial facilites.

Aboard the Roe class battleship, Derke, the CIWS put up a fight against the incoming missiles, but not enough, there were simply too many, the Derke was doomed. 11 missiles impacted the Derke at various places, it was soon capsized. It was in deep enough water to sink, but many of the sailors were able to swim ashore, but only by the hull that stuck out of the water slighlty at low tide could the Derke be seen.

The Kiravian flotilla hovered 80 miles offshore from New Harbor. It wasn't a warfleet, there were only 3 warships, 5 escort ships, 2 frigates, and a light cruiser. The rest of the fleet was large transport ships, carrying supplies, settlers, prefabricated buildings, and "contractor-settlers"; Imperial scientists, officials, contractors, and labourers who were assigned to evaluate and start up the colony, and then reside there. Industrial machinery and agricultural equipment was laid in the holds, next to large containers of grain, seed, beans, food, animal feed, and large bags of flour, all to feed the new settlers until they reached self-sufficiency

The launch of fighter planes and helicopters did not go unnoticed by Manthian radar operators, and soon a counter-strike was underway. The helicopters were soon bracketed in the sights of dozens of SPAA-1 AA guns, while the planes were targeted by Praetorian II SAM launchers spitting missiles into the sky. A hundred and twenty SAMS were fired in the first wave, and Manthian Shukusei fighters quickly dove on any survivors.

Still the planes had not been completely without effect, and a number of them found their targets in railroads, warehouses or the like. Similarly Shore Battery Number Four, which had revealed its position by firing, was obliterated by enemy missiles. Such had been expected.

The attacking tanks and APCs split up into three distinct groups as they entered Echoese territory. Several hundred tanks and APCs, along with all the typical escorts and auxiliary vehicles that accompanied a Manthian mechanized division into action - recon, EW vehicles, mobile AA... - formed the main strike force, which would advance along the southern coast with an eventual goal of reaching the Echoese colonial capital. Meanwhile, two smaller mechanized groups moved up the center and the northern shore respectively, to mop up any resistance which might flare up elsewhere.

Archer UAVs flying ahead scoured the countryside for enemy forces, sending any data they acquired back to artillery and rocket launchers behind the front lines, while Sparrow and Shukusei jets soared overhead providing heavy air support.

Official Government Response
We hereby cede all territory and resources of the area now known as the Confederate Colony of New Harbor to the Kiravian Empire. The Kiravian Empire has paid the Confederate States an undisclosed sum of money for the colony. It has been decided between our two governments that any Echoese citizens in the colony shall have dual citizenship in both nations. The Confederate States government shall no longer have any say in the governing, use, or people of the Halako Islands. We trust our long-time ally to take good care of the people and the land.

OOC: I should still rp the losses though...

The harriers were lost, there had been little they could do to escape the SAMs, but however, the Cobra Helicopters had been flying slow and low, under the radar. The fighters were a real threat, but it was one the Cobras would have to live with. They spread out to make harder targets for the fighters. They still had the intent of wreaking some havoc at the main Manthian base.

At the small and as of yet unnamed Echoese base the Marines braced for a defensive operation. The already strong barriers had been fortified, and tanks placed at choke points. This was the type of unbalanced training these Marines had been made for. They set up SAMs and other AAA to hopefully hold back an air attack, their biggest fear.
New Manth
16-09-2007, 05:25
The Manthian troops continued to press forward. In the air, three dozen Shukuseis descended on the helicopters, firing off a pair of AAMs and then showering them with cannon fire if the choppers survived. Even though the main Manthian base was mostly empty as the troops were invading Echoese territory, it was still a very valuable target and one that needed to be defended.

Echoese Territory

Colonel Ismail Hakim gazed at the video feed from a UAV flying over the main enemy base - quickly constructed fortifications, a few tanks... not a huge problem. He respected the enemy for his determination to fight, but he also firmly believed that the age of the heroic last stand had gone out with the invention of guided artillery. And he was about to demonstrate that fact to the Echoese.

The video flickered slightly as one UAV disintegrated in a ball of flames, victim of an extremely lucky enemy shot no doubt... still, there were plenty more where that came from. Flying high over the enemy base, tiny electric motors and sparse airframes giving off little by which to track them, the UAVs would provide detailed targeting information to Manthian artillery.

And what artillery! 16" Stormhammer heavy howitzers firing battleship-sized shells, joined by dozens of 155mm Corbulo field guns, would shower the enemy fortifications with armor and ground-piercing shells, the heavy guns especially designed to make short work of fortifications. The Colonel firmly expected that there would be nothing left alive by the time he arrived at the base, but there was no sense taking chances, and he had over a thousand heavily armored vehicles to finish the job if necessary.

He smiled grimly as he remembered an old quote, from the American Civil War. A more romantic time, perhaps, but it was still applicable. It is well that war is so terrible - otherwise we should grow too fond of it.

He tapped a few keys on his tanks' command computer, and, seventy kilometers back, the guns roared to life.

ooc: It is the War of Northern Aggression not the American Civil War!

There were only enough left alive to surrender. The Confederate States' flag was lowered to be replaced with a pure white one during a slight break in the fire. There seemed to be one underground fortification that the Manthian shells could not pierce, and that is where the dozen men left contemplated what may happen to them next.

The small contingent of Cobras had stood little chance of fighting off the massive Manthian attack, and soon fell to the ground one by one.

ooc: If you say so ;)

The Colonel smiled as he saw the white flag run up. A smashing success, with few casualties... almost none, but a few Manthian soldiers had died in enemy missile attacks. Still, though, a flawlessly executed attack all around.

Several dozen infantrymen moved into the remains of the Echoese base, and started accepting the surrenders of the few remaining Echoese, while three men began running up the Manthian flag over the ruins. It was picture perfect, and indeed a photographer snapped a few shots for later propaganda.

Meanwhile, the two secondary forces split up into smaller groups, moving to all parts of the Echoese colony to round up isolated settlers and show the Manthian flag.

Soon a soldier discovered that there might be a mostly intact bunker entrance concealed under a pile of rubble, its occupants most likely trapped...

Such a thing was most likely a command bunker, and its occupants might have valuable intelligence. He called for heavy machinery, though digging through the rubble might take several hours.

Aye, the New Harborers were a simple people; the general response to the New Manthians was something along the lines of 'That's nice, can I get back to what I'm doing now?' Even the Governor had pretty much the same thing to say as he was making soup at the time.

To which the general response went along the lines of "Sure, as long as you don't mind us searching your residence and confiscating any weapons, communications devices, fugitives, or other illegal materials as per Colonial Defense Authority Declaration 193."

Which was promptly carried out, even if the person in question did mind. Especially if they minded, in fact, because that probably meant they had something to hide.

Meanwhile, a heavy crane worked slowly to shift rubble out of the way. It wasn't clear whether these men had surrendered along with the rest of the enemy forces, and so no chances were taken - once the barrier was thin enough, tear gas was pumped inside and then the final pieces of rubble were cleared and several infantrymen in full armor stormed inside.

The Colony of New Harbor had been made to be peaceful and dry. The people didn't too much like the New Manthians coming in, but at the wave of a gun, most people gave in. The likely most questionable thing the inspectors would find would be a few hunting rifles, harpoons, and industrial mining explosives near the mines. The citizens were quite pissed at the unnecessary taking of their satellite phones and laptops, but again quivered at the gun; the only other question was if Marijuana was permissible.

There stood two Marines in the bunker, choked with tear gas, unable to fight or officially surrender and they looked to be officers, but regardless of training, they had been unprepared for a tear gas attack, and it had them immobilized.

Two infantrymen quickly disarmed the enemy commanders and pulled them out, where they were confronted by the Colonel, now dismounted from his tank and surveying the area.

"Ah, so you are our holdouts?" he queried as the two were brought before him. "I'm sure we will have much to talk about later, but for the moment I am interested in getting in direct contact with your government. You see, we wish to begin negotiations."

"I'm sure you have contact information? We will foot the phone bill, of course." he said, glancing at what looked like the twisted remains of a FEI broadcasting tower."

Meanwhile, the others rummaged through the bunker, looking for anything useful. The list of citizens was turned up and passed on - it would be used to make sure the soldiers didn't miss anyone in their sweep. The real prize, though, would be if they could find the machines used to encrypt communications, or perhaps codebooks.

Elsewhere

Marijuana was certainly not legal, and confiscated upon discovery. This was lenient treatment, the colonists were informed - further infractions would result in deportation to penal colonies.

Even as the New Manthians attacked the Echoese a different offensive was taking place.

In the far north in the lands of Northern Halako, the new Halakian army was mobilizing, who knew who the New Manthians will target next. In the New Manthian territory however, a different mobilization was taking place. The natives finally had their chance to strike at the enemy.

With the ongoing CFEI - New Manthian war, the focus of the 'invaders' was shifted towards the other foreigners. It was a chance they would not miss. They knew the ground and the enemy will be having difficulties in deploying due to the lack of infrastructure.

With numbers and terrain on their side, the Halakians hit back. The very same moment that the Manthians were celebrating the defeat of the Echoese settlement, the natives begun their offensive.

From prospector teams to military bases, nothing was forgotten.

OOC: Forgot about little ol' me?

Anyway, this is a typical worth vs loss struggle in my view. You're facing an enemy that has nothing to lose and with a deep and intimate knowledge of the terrain they're fighting on, similar to the Viet Cong in a way, but given the particularities a lot nastier. Plus, the infrastructure isn't as generous as the one in Vietnam (Read almost nill) so that adds to the problem.

As per an agreement between the CSFEI and the Empire,
The Kiravian Empire officially declares the Colony of Novaharboura a Province of the Empire.

As a result of the cession, several changes will be in place:

-Echoese nationals residing in the colony are hereby granted full dual citizenship in the Empire and the CFEI.

-With the colony now under KE control, and withdrawal of CFEI forces, the Empire declares this conflict over.

-Mattan claims to the Northeast portion of Echo Harbor Island are acknowledged. We invite New Manth to send a delegate to the temporary colonial capital to discuss either the creation of a joint colony, or complete cession of the Mattan claim.

-As we are allies with Quadesh, the Empire will not attempt any violation of their territory.

-We ask the Mattan forces to withdraw from the area of the colony that is OUTSIDE their claim. We have no problem with their forces intheir claimed territory.

-We declare nautrality towards the Maldorian colony.

-We declare neutrality towards the Brittonian colony

-Hunting of dolphins, whales, and seals is still banned in New Harbour's territorial waters and EEZ. Dolphins and whales are considered sentient by the Empire as well. Seals are not considered fully sentient, but are still a protected species.

-2,350 Kiravian settlers will be brought to New Harbour.

We must ask by what right the Echoese have presumed to sell you land that belongs not to them anymore, but to Manth by right of conquest? What would possibly make you think that we would accept such a sale?

Do you think the Allies in 1946 would have simply left Germany if the German government announced it was selling the place to Sweden? Certainly not. They would have ignored the farce and continued their occupation.

We are reasonable, and perfectly willing to negotiate over the status of our colony here, but we are not prepared to simply up and leave. Similarly, though we are preparing for peace negotiations with the Far Echo Islands government, we are not prepared to accept a third party simply waltzing in and declaring that the conflict is over. Such is solely the province of our two sovereign governments. If the Kiravian government would like to mediate peace talks, that could be arranged, but do not presume to simply dictate terms.

Regards.

Colonel Hakim blinked as he was handed a message by an aide.

"Direct from DFD, sir. They wanted you to know what you're looking at..."

The Colonel looked over the message, acquiring a scowl which slowly deepened as he read through it.

"They want to what? Assure us that they will 'return' our own land?"

"...sir, if you..."

"Why, I ought to fucking show them who's really in charge here!"

"...sir..."

"How many antishipping missiles do we have left?"

"Twenty Sledgehammers, sixteen Khans, but sir..."

"Redouble the beach defenses, have the Stormhammers resupplied..."

"...sir!"

Hakim blinked.

"Yes?"

"Orders are not to engage. The Kiravians are going to mediate a peace talk as soon as we get in touch with the Echoese government."

"Well what about our damn colony? They think they fucking own the place or something?"

"I assume it will be settled at the talks, sir... now, please. There are orders..."

"What?"

"We're to consolidate our presence in Echoese territory. In the words of the Denomination, make sure that we have the place in an iron grip. Sir."

"Well get to it. We have fifty soldiers for every enemy civilian, it shouldn't be hard."

Former Echoese Territory

Manthian military patrols soon became a ubiquitous sight for the colonists, as the Manthian soldiers seemed to be giving the impression that they weren't just about to vanish into thin air as soon as the Kiravians arrived. Meanwhile, the enemy prisoners of war were being herded into a large, sturdy concrete-block warehouse back in Manthian territory, originally meant to store rail-cars, where they would be held under guard until peace talks started up. They would soon be joined by the survivors from the Echoese battleship, as a Pepperbox LSV was even now on its way to pluck them from the freezing waters.

"Welcome to New Harbor, Officer. Hope your visit will prove fruitful for us both."

The Colonel sat back, nibbling on a pretzel.

"As I mentioned, our other man should be here any minute. I've just been informed his plane has landed."

Original Manthian Territory

Overseas Economic Zone 6 proper had been mostly stripped of men; only a few thousand soldiers remained to patrol the area, mostly concentrated around key areas such as the port, the airfields and major military installations. The returning natives found a number of tempting targets for their wrath, many unguarded by any human hand, simply watched over by cameras or sometimes not even that - railroad bridges arching over dizzying canyons, remote mining operations with only a few private security guards to watch over things, or fuel depots and junctions which had been established earlier, to facilitate further penetration into the untamed country.

Even as the plane carrying the Denomination's representative touched down, disgorging staffers and guards onto the runway, an alarm began to ring on the wall of Seargeant Jorge Materem.

"Emergency channel, CDA Central." he barked, flipping a bank of switches. On the map of Halako before him, a red dot began blinking in and out, signifying the location of the caller.

Sash Mencini here of 12th Section. Patrol under attack, heavy attack, we have taken casualties. We need a hand down here...

"Just one minute there 12th. Estimate attackers?"

20-30, maybe more. We're badly outnumbered here. Musta been an Echo surprise attack...

The speaker was briefly interrupted by the chatter of automatic gunfire, before another interrupted.

Ain't Echo, unless they started arming the locals. Someone gave a buncha tribesmen fuckin' assault rifles and grenades here!"

"Right, I'll have a chopper on its way there in just a second. Hold tight..."

Sgt. Materem trailed off as the harsh alarm sounded again. Another red dot began blinking, and then another, and another..."

"Shit." he murmured, laying down the radio receiver and reaching for his satellite phone.

"This is Sgt. Materem at station one." he said. "Priority two alert. Multiple contemporaneous attacks on our outposts in the west... yes, get them on."

He began flipping more switches, opening up a simultaneous line to the airfield as he waited for Divisional Command to come on the line.

"This is CDC Emergency. I need air support in sections F5 and A43 as soon as possible, transmitting coordinates..."

Materem worked several more switches.

"Got that CDC, we'll send a few birds over."

"Thanks boys. One second..."

Materem switched back to Divisional Command.

"Yes, General? I have..." his eyes flicked briefly back to the screen. "...eight current attacks, including one on a patrol group, four on contractors, three on unguarded locations with camera coverage..."

The Imperial fleet hovered on the horizon. They were eager to begin yet another Imperial colony, but also wary that if they were to land settlers, it would risk damaging the agree ments that would let them land in an unnoccupied colony, ready to be forged into the home of a new, mixed Echoese and Kiravian culture. Vexillographers in the Xirya Colony had designed a flag for the colony, 50 copies of which were laid in the hold, ready to be flown, if things went well.

Back in Valëka, Kirav's largest city, days went on as usual. The Tribunal announced the purchase of the colony, but the ordinary citizens of Vlëka cared little. It was just another province, a new country begun somwhere in this vast world by some entreprenauereal, or marginally insane Kiravians. Such things were announced weekly. But this was something new, not that anyone noticed. Not a colony were it could just be ceded, or conquered, or settled, but one cheived by diplomacy, of which the results were still unclear.

"Excellent, excellent."

Hakim frowned very slightly. That's one candidate out, unless he's lying... doubtful I think.

He sure as hell wasn't going to admit that there were partisan attacks going on, though, if the other side didn't seem to know about it. It would just weaken the Manthian negotiating position.

"So, as for our purpose here..."

He paused as the whirring of helicopter rotors became audible.

"Ah, I believe that's our final guest."

A minute later, the Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy representative stepped in - a tall black man in a white suit, wearing several golden rings and a colorful sash. He made an odd contrast to the shorter, slightly balding Colonel in his sparse military uniform.

"This is Halys Mattan III, he will be representing the Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy here."

"Colonel, Governor, Officer, good to see you. Now, we have two matters to resolve here; peace with the Far Echo Islands, and the status of New Harbor."

Mattan threw a positively glittering grin around the room.

"As for the first, let me assure you I am prepared to offer a full peace immediately, based on lines of de facto control at the moment. I do not intend to exact overly severe war reparations from the Echoese government, as Manth has little interest in pursuing a war any further now that it seems the conflict with the Maldorians has ended - and frankly, there is no need for crippling reparations over such a small conflict in any case. I also have authority to sign for release of prisoners of war once peace is concluded."

Mattan threw the last line in to remind the Echoese of their men sitting in Manthian custody. No doubt they probably weren't thrilled by the idea of reparations, and it would do with reminding them about the soldiers and sailors whose fates depended on an amicable peace.

"As for the second, the official position of the Denomination with regard to New Harbor is that it is sovereign Manthian territory by right of conquest, as demonstrated by the Echoese surrender and Manthian military administration of the area. However, I am fully prepared both to negotiate for joint development of the area with any Kiravian interests which wish to invest, and to allow for Kiravian citizens to take up residence freely in the area, though subject of course to National Law."

The Greater Economic Union of New Manth and the Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands do, in the spirit of bringing peace back to the island of Halako, affirm and pledge to implement the following terms of agreement:

I. A resumption of formal peacetime relations, and an immediate cessation of the state of war, takes effect between the Greater Economic Union of New Manth and the Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands immediately upon the signing of this document;

II. The Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands recognizes Manth as the sole holder, now and to perpetuity unless later disposed of by the Union, of New Harbor and its associated territories;

III: The Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands agrees to pay reparations to the sum of two billion markas yearly, for a period of five years counting immediately from the signing of this document;

IV. Upon signing of this document, measures will be taken to see to it that all prisoners of war are returned to their respective countries of origin speedily and without harm;

V: All citizens of Echoese nationality formerly residing in New Harbor will be free to remain on their land, in which case they will be issued a Denomination Card affirming their right to freely enter and exit Manthian territory with the same rights as a citizen, or else may depart back to the Far Echo Islands if they so choose, without hinderance from the Government of the Greater Economic Union of New Manth;

VI: The Greater Economic Union of New Manth and the Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands will pledge to work together to reinstate free trade and travel between each nation;

VII: The Greater Economic Union of New Manth pledges that any native peoples formerly under the protection of the Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands shall be allowed to peacefully depart whither they will;

VIII: The Confederacy of the Far Echo Islands agrees not to station military forces on or around the Islands of Halako.

New Manth

"As I mentioned earlier, Manth does not recognize the sale of territory because the Far Echo Islands no longer held authority in New Harbor at the time of the sale."

Mattan shrugged.

"However, I'd hate for your people to go home empty-handed. As such, I'm prepared to open the borders to Kiravian colonists, allowing any settlers who desire to to settle in New Harbor, and also to allow Kiravian companies to do business on the island free of the duties that would normally apply to foreigners. We'd keep formal sovereignty, but Kiravian citizens would be free to come and go as they wish.

Unofficially, I can also assure you that as long as we don't see any egregious violations of Citizens' Union Law, they wouldn't get any from our soldiers. Security would of course remain primarily Manth's concern, but we'd also be happy to work with your men on that."

"My good Governor! Let's not be difficult, now."

Mattan laughed.

"An examination of military logs will, I am sure, indicate that Manthian troops entered the territory well before the 'sale' was announced - Colonel, I presume your men can produce the documentation if necessary?"

"Of course." the Colonel quickly replied.

Mattan smiled. No matter how much the Echoese might protest, the Manthian takeover was fait accompli as far as Mattan was concerned. And the Echoese would be wise not to protest too much. He knew the Confederation's government was in an extremely vulnerable position right now, with hundreds of their military personnel in Manthian custody. Should the Governor prove intractable, there were plenty of options.

"Regardless, even if that were not so - and it is - the land would still rightfully belong to Manth under the principles of international law, unless I provide otherwise via treaty. And I assure you I have no intention of doing so. So let's lay that thought to rest. Now, Governor, I'm sure that the Echoese soldiers in Manthian custody are dying to return to the Confederacy, and I would hate to delay them, but we need your governments' affirmation of the peace treaty before that can happen."

Mattan slid one of the two copies of the treaty over to the Governor.

"The way I see it, the Empire gains very little from this, only the right for Kiravians to live here, and for Kiravian buisnesses to use the island's resources. That is not why we have come. The object of this colony was to create a new country in the Empire, and to mix the Echoese and Kiravian societies. Economic gain was second priority."

"Well, Officer, compromise is the soul of diplomacy, and I'm afraid one will be necessary on the Empire's part in this case. The problem with your plan is that you propose to create this new country on what is now Manthian territory, and that I cannot allow."

Mattan shrugged.

"Perhaps, if the Kiravian Empire must reject the generous terms of settlement I have offered, you might have some luck in buying territory from one of the other powers here? Though I'd advise you to make sure that the ownership is undisputed before doing so, this time around."

OOC: Hope you dont mind that I use fluid time.

IC: The former Kuronan colony, now christened(unceremoniously) 'Province-5438' by the TSRT, had been purchased for one reason: resources. Red Tide did not care about the natives in the area, as a matter of fact... they were viewed as a hinderance. So a Mechanized-Infantry Division(25,000 men) was being shipped there to 'sanitize'(IE: eradicate natives from) the new province. Two brigades and a regiment(12,500 men) would go on North of the channel that ran in the middle of the colony. Another two brigades and a regiment would go South of it.

To support the division, a Carrier Battlegroup would anchor in the channel, airsupport was also put on standby when an airfield could be built.

[b]South of the dividing channel...[/i]

It was a quiet native fishing village around late-morning. The villagers boats were out fishing when the six H/K-1 Surface Attack Aircraft swept low over the village. Natives stared in awe at the aircraft as they flew away, then banked and came back.

As the H/K-1s flew overhead, three of them released two thermobaric bombs each. The bombs descended, released their flammable gas all over the village, and then ignited. The few villagers that survived having the oxygen first sucked out of their lungs, then burnt, and then blown away lay maimed and moaning.

A few minutes later, the first landing craft came ashore and Red Tidean soldiers stormed out. The few survivors found were put out of their misery with gunshots to the head. The thermobaric bombs had obliterated all the structures within the village, it having been made out of straw.

It wasnt long before the heavy equipment came ashore, mostly combat and logistics vehicles, but there were a few engineering vehicles that immediatly got to work paving an airfield.

On the North side of the channel, another village had been selected for the same treatment.

The oppression had come to Halako.

Now I know what you're probably thinking, and no, you don't have to worry about being drawn into any wars of aggression. The provision would be purely defensive."

“This is our land and no matter what, we will fight for it.” – Halakian Native

Throughout the many years that they had spent on the land, the Halakians formed what some would call a bond with it. They knew what was safe to eat and how to deal with the changing weather. But above all else, they learned to hunt in this harsh environment. Perfected by generations upon generations of practice, they were the ultimate predators of Halako facing beasts and nature alike and always winning. Now, it was the Manthians that they would prey on.

---

Three days prior the attack.

“Now is the time to strike my brothers, the Manthians are busy with the Echoese, leaving themselves vulnerable here. They believe they have purged the lands and banished us all. They have no preparation for what is to follow,” a man, dressed in a military garb talked to others gathered around a fire.

“We shall strike then, but let us be cautious about them, we must not underestimate the ‘invaders’. I have received news from tribes in the Echoese land that they are fearsome enough,” another, dressed in furs, added to the topic.

“Indeed, but we must not hesitate now, we have a golden opportunity and we should exploit it. The gods of the land are with us,” another man spoke.

“Very well. Then I presume we stick to the plan?”

“Yes, White Wolf.”

The plan was remarkably similar to that used by the natives in their hunting expeditions. Diversion, hounding and then the final trap. With expertise coming in from sources familiar with the modern art of war, they knew exactly what they had to deal with. The main concern was the air force, as the mech abilities of the enemy made little difference in the harsh land of Halako.

---

Three days later. Day of the attack.

Things started as they were supposed to. Halakian ‘soldiers’ if one might call them so, initiated strikes against several Manthian targets. In the moments of confusion that were bound to follow, another strike was to be launched.

Armed with mortars, stinger missiles and plenty hand grenades, the Halakians used their natural ability at blending with the environment to get closer to the targets. After al, they were accustomed in dealing with wild animals and they usually had a much more enhanced perception than that of the humans.

Minutes after several smaller squads initiated phase one of the plan, other groups started making their move. The sound of mortars was going to plague the manthian ears for a long time now.

Near the Echoese border, there was another action taking place. Aware that the Manthians will make haste and return the bulk of their forces to what was now a battlefield, the Halakians took measures against it. There were only a handful of access routes available for the vehicles of the enemy and they made sure that each and everyone of them was going to provide a nasty surprise. After all, those mines had to go somewhere.

The war was on.

The new colony had begun.

The Kiravian fleet beached its prows on the shore of New Harbor, now renamed Novaharboura. 3 settlements were begun along the shoreline, Delphinica, Icemetal, and Coastport. The new government had been prefabricated before the ships were even loaded, and was enstated overnight.

Coscivian and Arkik were made co-official languages, and the Echoese towns in the colony were measured, recorded, and incorporated. In the coming days, more houses and buildings would be constructed, research would begin on the colony's land and resources, the natives would be contacted, and the Novaharbourian Colonial Military would be commissioned, and recruitment would begin.

Greysand was named the temporary capital of the province, and a new flag was raised overhead.

A border outpost

Musab Kadir was scared - no, to put it accurately, he was terrified. To go back to Manthian territory after deserting... if he was caught, that meant death if he was lucky. Still, he didn't regret his decision. Even if it cost him his life, his soul was a far more important thing. And to continue to associate with the Manthian army, after seeing what he'd seen... impossible if he hoped ever to face the angels, to undergo the judgment of Allah with a pure heart.

Musab had spent the last few weeks explaining to officials from Damirez, and to native leaders, just how Manthian security cameras, warning systems, and communications networks operated. As a noncombat technician, he had little of tactical or espionage value - his pass codes and encryption data were outdated and low-level - but he did have a wealth of technical information to pass on. But though it had been enough for some of his companions to provide information, Musab wasn't satisfied. After what he had seen, he was determined to strike a blow against Manth in person. The wrath of Allah would rain upon the infidels pretending to the true faith, the wolves in sheeps' clothing whom he had recently served alongside, whom he had called his companions and brothers in arms. The very thoughts filled him with righteous anger, and in the absence of any better individual, Musab had taken the role of Allah's judge upon himself.

And thus he found himself creeping slowly through enemy territory, surrounded by silent native warriors bearing guns and rocket-propelled grenades. Their mission was to overcome the guards at one of the border crossings and then plant land mines all along the road without being detected by camera. The first part was simple, with surprise and numbers the fight should be easy. The second part was why Musab was along.

The man in front of him raised a warning hand, and Musab halted. Peering over a ridge, he could see the checkpoint far below.

The native chief nodded, and Musab walked forward. He turned left, walking around the hill and approaching from Manthian territory, openly walking along the road to distract the men while the others waited above.

As he approached the barrier, a man stood, shining a flashlight in his face.

"Name?"

"Musab Kadir. Machinist's mate. They had a breakdown..."

"Yeah? They didn't tell us about anything. Show some ID, eh?"

Musab fished out his military card and handed it to the man, when all of a sudden a shout rang out from the cabin to the side of the road.

"Who's there?"

A soldier peered through infrared goggles up at the hillside, and Musab went tense. As the officer interrogating him looked back, he fumbled for his DAC-99, carefully scanning the area. Where was it...

There. He put an accurate round through the lens of the security camera, and dove for a ditch as the crackle of automatic weapons fire broke out. He watched as several soldiers were quickly cut down. Scattering, the remainder returned fire, and at least one native tumbled from the high position on top of the ridge before they, too, were silenced. The last man desperately reached for a radio, before Musab, taking careful aim, put a bullet through his hand.

Musab clambered out as the others climbed down, approaching the wounded man.

"The hell are you? Traitor!" the man gasped. It was the same officer as before.

"You are the traitor!" Musab hissed, angrier than he expected. "Now that I have seen how things really are done, I see that there was never any truth to what we're told back home. Fighting for Islam, for our families' safety, for Manth... hah!"

Musab stepped on the man's other hand as he reached for a fallen weapon.

"Who would believe me if I told them that you dogs have betrayed our country to devils and whores, fascists abroad and fascists at home?"

He ground on the officer's hand. The man writhed.

"The sentence for that is death. Make your peace with Eblis and his brood, dog, and tell them they will fail yet!"

Musab squeezed the trigger, emptying the remainder of his clip into the man's chest.

He turned as native soldiers ran up. There was still a lot of work to do, laying mines and cleaning the place up to not look suspicious, and not much time to do it before someone noticed a station no longer reporting in.

Checkpoint 5

Sure enough, a tank column soon rolled around the corner, seven Nakils forming the core of an armored group that also included several APCs and armored reconnaisance vehicles. With the victory over the Echoese coming bloodlessly, and more importantly, swiftly, Manthian forces had been freed up to return to Halako where they were badly needed, and thousands of men were moving back across the border into Manthian territory.

This particular column, however, was to be slightly delayed. As the lead tank rolled up to the checkpoint, the commander looked puzzled. Nobody was comign to meet them, and in fact, nobody seemed to be present at all...

That's when the explosion tore through the road, literally flinging the sixty-ton tank a foot or two in the air. The tank landed upright, and, testament to the vehicle's frightening durability, the turret was still traversing through the rolling smoke as the commander searched for some sign of an attacker, before realizing that the explosion had come from below. For all intents and purposes, however, the tank was dead... the treads were shredded by the blast and the vehicle could not be moved.

Infantrymen quickly dismounted from APCs and ran to check the hills, but to no use... Musab and his men were long gone. It didn't take them long, however, to find the bodies of the checkpoint guards, lying sprawled and stiff behind some bushes, stripped of weapons and ammunition.

Manthian Territory

All across the western half of the Manthian colony, nearest to Damirez and more sparsely populated than the centers of administration and industry in the northeast, Manthian outposts were being attacked and overrun or abandoned as soldiers withdrew to the east. For now, helicopters were busy flying rescue missions to retrieve isolated garrisons, with little time to strike at enemy troops except those that got in their way, though strike fighters lingered over the east, strafing or bombing any native soldiers who showed themselves and in general trying to clear the way for the much more vulnerable choppers.

In the northeast, in the port and the surrounding areas, soldiers and tanks were quickly being mustered. The Nakil tank was not ideal for the terrain, though it had more crosscountry maneuverability than the Damirezans had probably given it credit for, but there were also a variety of other vehicles available. In particular, the G11A tracked reconnaisance vehicle, though too lightly armed and armored to engage tanks and such, was ideal for operating in this rough terrain, and as many as could be gathered were being formed up to defend the northeastern sector. For now, though, there was little chance of striking back... with Manthian forces largely scattered still, and many not yet returned from Echoese territory, Manth was still firmly on the back foot.

Near the former Echo-Manthian border.

As expected, it didn’t take long for the Manthians to return from the Echoese territory and into the boiling lands of what they claimed as their colony. Some of them received a rude awakening at the hands of the mines planted for the Manthian tanks, but others were about to find another surprise.

Although not all of them, some of the fallen soldiers of the invaders were booby trapped. Some visible, while others carefully deceived the ones looking at them. So, as the Manthians made attempts to recover their dead, others joined the ranks of the heaven hitch hikers. It was a brutal, but effective tactic, and after what the Manthians did to their families, their wives and children, they deserved no mercy.

But this was not all they had planned. As the enemy columns were being slowed down by the constant threat of mines and other traps somewhat larger groups prepared to strike. Armed with hand held anti tank missiles, they intended to do as much damage as possible to the enemy. The main targets for these fighters were not the tanks, but the much more vulnerable enemy infantry transporters. Without infantry, the tanks were like fish on land.

---

Near the evacuating Manthian outposts the natives barely managed to contain their excitements. This was their first victory. Even so, they were aware that things were not as simple as this operation made it be. This was but a part of their country and they could not rest until they managed to release it all.

In this battle, the helicopters were the main targets. Using Stinger missiles, they hunted down the choppers, especially when the vessels were most vulnerable, at take off and take down. But this tactic had its drawbacks, as the enemy jets attacked the teams that dared open fire on the evacuation teams. But while this was bound to cause casualties among the attackers, it also exposed the jets to fire from supporting units. If they wanted to make the enemy bleed, then they had to be prepared for it to bite back.

With this temporary victory, the path for supplies and help was open. Without an active network keeping an eye on the border, there was little to stop brave men from doing vital deliveries to the fighting force.

---

In the North - East, the mobilization of the Manthian forces wasn’t unnoticed. Quick strikes were launched against the assembling men in an attempt to cause disorder and as much damage as possible. Lowering moral and the fighting ability of the enemy was the objective, but it didn’t hurt that many of the natives finally felt they were taking revenge against the pillagers.

Also, using a tactic similar to that used on the other end of the Manthian land, they hunted down the returning helicopters. This would be a blow indeed as troops heading for safety were going to be shot down moments before reaching base.

For now, the offensive was still in full throttle.

Port Mansura (Zone 6 capitol)

Colonel Ismail Hakim swore as reports poured in - for every aircraft that made it back to base after a sortie, it seemed there was another that didn't. Infrared-guided Stingers were an old system, but one that had proven a workhorse and a reliable system in many conflicts across the world. Halako was so far proving no different.

It wasn't that the Denomination of the Air Force didn't have aircraft to meet the challenge of infrared-guided weapons - the Sariel, for example, possessed in addition to its formidable radar stealth an extremely low infrared signature, and the Shukusei and Aquila jets as well as the Corvus attack helicopters, all mainstay aircraft in the Denomination, had been designed with extensive and expensive measures to reduce infrared, radar, and even ladar returns. The problem, one Hakim knew all too well but was powerless to affect, was that those weren't the aircraft in question here. The strike fighters and transport helicopters were older designs, victims of political decisions which sent all the funding to super-capable, and also super-expensive flashy air superiority fighters and stealth bombers, while neglecting the less glamorous workhorses such as close air support craft. Win or lose, he could only hope that the conflict would open the eyes of Air Force commanders to what the Army had been complaining about for years.

Still spreading blame around might have been satisfying on a gut level, but it would not win a battle. Hakim's first priority was regrouping Manthian forces in the northeast, which were numerically strong but disorganized due to the rapid influx of troops retreating from the West and other areas.

Fortunately, the colonial capital at Mansura was as good a place as any to draw the line. It was surrounded by a number of hills which, though they could offer good positions to bombard the harbor and airport, would first need to be cleared of the troops he had sent to establish a firm defensive cordon. What trees and brush cover had survived being used to construct buildings in the town had swiftly been cut down or set ablaze, offering a good field of fire for the defenders with few places to hide. Hakim was fairly familiar with the principles of guerrila war, and he hoped that by offering a tempting target - the port - but forcing the natives to engage in an open attack to secure it, the natives could be forced to fight on Manthian terms. In such a fight, the Colonel was confident that the organized and professional army could beat back the native militia. After all, good hunters though they might be, there was only so much you could teach a primitive tribesman about the incredibly complex demands of modern warfare in a crash course of a couple months.

And if they didn't take the bait? Hakim felt that if the Manthians could just get some time to organize, and to bring in the supplies and men to retake and firmly hold the land, perhaps the battle could be turned around anyway. He had asked for, and received assurances that he would get, reinforcements in the form of a mountain division, so in that case it would just be a matter of waiting until they arrived and then beginning a counteroffensive. And perhaps interrogating a few of the natives to find out just where they had been getting their fancy toys, though Hakim had a pretty good guess anyway.

Elsewhere

Vicious fights continued to break out at regular intervals between retreating Manthian soldiers and native ambushers, pitting native stealthiness and hunting techniques against night vision goggles and heavy armor. Natives attacking armored personnel carriers and armored convoys expecting easy targets would be dismayed to find that the Shalmanesar APCs were more than capable of standing up to fire, being relatively well-armed and armored for an APC and possessing better maneuverability in the countryside than the Ejiard IFV also operated by Manth - one of the reasons the Shalmanesar, not the Eijard, had been sent to Halako. Still surprise rocket attacks left their tolls in burned-out Shalmanesars and G11s as the troops fought their way towards Mansura.

Across the colony, the picture was the same - troops falling back, fighting hard whenever there was an opponent showing himself to fight, but taking every opportunity otherwise to withdraw towards the northeast. In a few days there would only be scattered outposts remaining in the west, men holed up in mine shafts, rugged mountain areas or other easily defensible locations.

Natives who ventured too near to Mansura, however, risked much stiffer resistance. In addition to the relatively stationary, but well-established pickets guarding the approaches to the town, large patrols of G11A vehicles and infantrymen swept the nearby countryside at irregular intervals, looking to make the area a dangerous place to linger for any insurgents, and to keep the lines of retreat safe for returning soldiers.

High Seas Force 12

Moussad al-Shazli frowned as he read the latest report from the command in Halako.

"Well I can see they are in some trouble, but I don't exactly see what they expect me to do about it. A battlecruiser is not exactly a specialized counterinsurgency tool..." he murmured.

He shrugged.

"I suppose our presence could help discourage the neighbors from any ill-advised opportunism, but really. Rather a waste of four capital ships."

The captain of the Al Hadi remained tactfully silent. An Admiral criticizing Denomination strategy was one thing, but if he joined in, and word went back to the Denomination...

al-Shazli sighed.

"Well, send for me when we enter territorial waters, Captain. Until then."

Manthian Colony. Freedom Peak.

Gathered around a fire, carefully concealed by years of experience, the main leaders of the army fighting for the liberation of this part of Halako from the foreign invaders met to discuss the current situation. So far the results were looking good, but they knew better than counting the birds up in the tree before they managed to gold them in their arms. Many hunts had been spoiled by rashness and everyone remembered the famine that a bad hunt could bring in a poor year. Only this time they weren’t talking about a hunt, they were talking about their very lands. The stakes were high, high indeed.

“The spears the north provided us with are mighty indeed!” one of the chieftains, obviously less knowledgeable with the modern world exclaimed as his companion slowly whispered something in his ear.

“Indeed,” another, equally impressed spoke, “Many of their iron birds fell out of the sky as our warriors unleashed our furry upon them.”

It was not as if all the leaders of the movement were at this level, but some of them made for their lack of modern knowledge with years of experience and with an overwhelming desire to see the enemies away from their lands. Furthermore, they all but admitted that they were not fit to lead, but, in respect to their abilities, their advices were carefully listened.

“So far we were able to make them bleed,” a younger leader, obviously with the benefit of intensive military training behind him, spoke, “Their planes were susceptible to our tactics due to their need to cover for the evacuating personnel, but now it seems that our foe is retreating towards Mansura.”

“Then we should take Mansura!” an overzealous Halakian loudly stated.

“We’re not ready yet,” another, quiet man cut that statement down. He was looking at a map, taking short notes in a notebook. “So far the Manthians bled, true, but we have nothing to strike at their fleet and in open ground we would be prey to their air force."

His assessment was shared by most of the ones present. They knew that despite their rather intense preparations, they didn’t have yet the ability to hunt the head of the beast. But they also knew that you never stop a hunt and allow for the prey to get away, returning stronger.

“Then what do we do?” came the obvious question, although their instincts already told them the path they should take.

“We harass them, strike at their guards and run, sabotage their machines and hide. We will not engage them openly, but we slowly bleed them. Any patrols or missions they send out, we’ll be ready for them until we can act openly and strike them off our lands.”

The conversation lasted well into the night but, for all scopes and purposes that was the main idea of the plan. Hit and run was the new game.

---

The battlefields were littered with wreckages and bodies, many Manthians, but also a fair share of Halakians. It wasn’t easy, but then again nothing in those lands was. Retreating Manthian convoys were hit, slowed down and then hit again. Traps were springing up all around the place aiming to prevent the Manthian escape.

There were still however enemy troops resisting in various locations. Great care had to be taken to remove them without taking too much casualties, but even so it was not bloodless. Mine shafts were smoked, choking anyone inside, while using tricky and difficult paths, the natives attacked the well positioned troops of the enemy.

The west was witness to a slow and methodical process, but, as many could attest it, it was a needed quest.

---

In the waters of Northern Halako, Principality vessels received a warning from the Satellite Network, showing ships heading towards the area. It was clear just why those ships were arriving, but it didn’t make the Narth Halako officials happy. They quickly requested reassurance and they were received it swiftly.

“Naval batteries will be installed here and another naval contingent will reinforce the already existing fleet,” the local fleet commander read his classified documents. “Well, after what happened around these parts it’s no wonder they’re spooked.”

"Well, if there's one good thing about the numbers, they do seem to have shocked old Zami into action..." a junior officer observed, breaking the silence around the conference table after the message had been delivered."

More like out of his senility. Took two thousand dead or MIA to do that, though, and more wounded... Colonel Hakim reflected sourly. At least his instinct for covering his ass is still perfectly healthy

He shook his head.

"Well, we have our tools then, people. You've heard the Commander. Mj. Mabaru, please contact the Navy and inform me when the first shipments will arrive. The rest of you, we have work to do."

Port Mansura

By this point it seemed that most of the troops who were going to make it to the town, had. Barracks were filled to overstuffing, and a fair number of wounded soldiers crowded the military hospital, a grim concrete blockhouse which had been hurriedly converted from its original purpose as a canned foods factory. Meanwhile, the streets were crowded with trucks full of supplies headed back and forth from the docks, as well as soldiers unloading vehicles and munitions from shipboard. The civilian population of the town were being loaded on the ships as they were emptied of war materiel, later to be transported offshore to ensure their safety.

The battlecruisers and support ships of Force 12 were hardly the only, or even the most important vessels en route to Mansura. The Iron Rainbow, a Kriegzimmer-designed troop carrier, was even now nosing its way up to the newly built concrete piers. Within its belly were vast quantities of fuel and munitions. Along with the tons of napalm, drums of fuel and countless cases of ammunition, however, were a few special packages. Deep in the bowels of the ship were nestled dozens of canisters of sarin, cyclosarin, and VX nerve agents, neatly sealed and wrapped together in large crates. Bioweaponry was present as well... weaponized anthrax, ebola, and smallpox among others were all nestled in neat rows behind locked doors.

Weaponry was not the only thing being shipped into Mansura, however, and if biochemistry would be providing some extra firepower for this battle, it would be the men of the 529th Light Infantry (Mountain) Division who would be called upon to provide the extra bodies. Ferried in by brigade aboard several General Marsden-class troop transports, the men of the 529th were quickly replacing the bloodied forces which had fought the initial skirmishes. Mechanized infantry was, after all, an amazing and powerful tool of modern warfare, but was ill-suited to counterinsurgency operations in such difficult terrain.

In the meantime, air power was being withdrawn from high-risk operations and kept closer to the capital and friendly ground. With guerilla fighters continuing to harass the outer defense lines, extensive measures were being taken to reduce any available cover and hiding spots as well as to restrict the mobility that was the natives' main advantage. Any trees or brush which had grown within a dozen miles of the city and had escaped being hacked down was now being burned, preferably with large quantities of napalm administered from a safe distance. With no meaningul places to hide, hit and run attacks against the capital would hopefully become much more difficult.

The final measure to shore up defenses while a counteroffensive force was built up were land mines, and they were being deployed in large numbers. Since it was far too inefficient, not to mention risky, to venture out and deploy them by hand, concentrated artillery was picking up the slack. Thousands of Macabean-designed 155mm shells scattered antipersonnel submunitions over the approaches to Mansura, leaving little bomblets buried in the earth that were designed to would, not kill, approaching soldiers. After all, the first rule of mine warfare was that a dead soldier was a clean loss, but a maimed one not only lost his fighting capability but took up resources to evacuate and treat.

“Meanwhile in the arctic region of Halako things are getting quite hot a local insurgence in the New Manthian colony increasing tensions in the area, with further details on the subject, reporter Dan Hawkings. Dan?

Thank you Andrea, as you were saying a bit earlier, things are getting a bit heated in the area. The increasing naval presence of the Manthians in this region making many uneasy and as you can see behind me, there’s an increased presence from the Damiran Navy, as a deterrent from further escalations.

It is unknown just what is happening south of the Northern Halako Protectorate, but rumors have it that a native uprising has driven back the New Manthian forces and established a strong hold over several parts of the region. At this moment further details are unavailable, but I have to ask myself just where did the natives got all the weapons they needed for this operation. Dan Hawkings reporting live for DNN.

Thank you Dan, we expect further notes from you regarding the situation.”

In the background of the image showing the DNN reporter, the sleek silhouettes of several Damiran destroyers could be seen, joined by carriers and, perhaps the most intriguing piece of hardware, a Super Dreadnought. The ship, christened Narval was the property of the Halakian military forces, but even so it was manned mostly by Damiran personnel. Even though the naval doctrine of the Principality revolved around carriers and less around cannons, the crews were not unaccustomed with the operations involving the giant cannons of the ship.

On one of those ships, the commander of the fleet received some interesting information.

”Sir, permission to enter,” an ensign knocked at the commander’s door, politely awaiting for a reply.

The commander, already awake was quick to answer the ensign allowing him acces in his quarters, ”Enter,”

Once inside the room of his superior, the soldier reported the reason of his visit, ”Incoming orders from home sir, regarding the current situation.”

Handling the orders to the commander, the ensign was quick to excuse himself and depart from the room as the other man ripped the envelope in which his orders were contained and read the words inside with a focused expression on his face.

”Well, that’s not hard to do, would have been more troublesome if they asked me to do that myself.”

---

It is not to say that the news report was the only warning flag coming from the Halakian colony back home and it was with great distress that this latest bit of news was received by the officials. It was becoming clear that the situation was threatening to escalate amd this was in no way of interest to The Principality.

”Well gentlemen, this matter has gone a bit too far,” the voice of Liviu Librescu could be heard in the chamber even though he was thousands of miles away. ”It’s quite clear that we don’t need this on our heads now so I’m charging you to get it solved. NOW!
The tone of the president was something new to the staff gathered here, but, given the increased amount of stress the man had been subjected lately and the various affairs that the country had to face, it was only natural for him to avoid another crisis at his hands.

”We’ll start diplomatic approaches to the problem Liviu,” Emilian Davout was the first to reply, the familiarity between the two men showing, ”It’s quite possible we’ll find a way to stop all this and provide a satisfactory solution to all involved.”

”Yes… and I trust them to do it,” the president added as he took a sip of water and sat back in his chair.

Once the heated tele-conference ended, the staff at home started a brainstorming session to find possible solutions for the matter.

”We could try buying the land from the Manthians,” a voice suggested triggering a light bulb above someone’s head.

”Why not, it’s worth giving it a shot,” came the reply and soon gears started working in that direction, a short letter being drafted for the government of New Manth.

Diplomatic Communiqué to the nation of New Manth,

Greetings from the Principality, our nation wishes to initiate diplomatic talks about the possibility of acquiring your possessions in Halako and about further cooperation between our nations.

We hope to receive a response swiftly and decide upon details regarding a possible agreement.

---

In the meantime the Halakian soldiers weren’t idle. The earlier successes against the New Manthians had come at a relatively low cost, but it was not to say that the loss of life in those operations had been light and now, even though most of the territory in the colony was in their possession the highest hurdle was yet to come, Mansura.

The city, as already predicted, was receiving various reinforcements and scouting missions had shown that an extensive minefield was being deployed whilst in addition to that the forests, so vital until then for the native successes, were being burned using napalm and other means. This would have placed the locals at a severe disadvantage, making hit and run tactics difficult, but not impossible. The problem was however that the risk of soldiers getting wounded in the operation was extremely high and the retrieval was difficult to say the least.

However even as the situation at Mansura presented a whole new challenge for the rebels, a steady flow of weaponry and ammunition was coming from the east. Liberated from the Manthians this side of the land allowed them now to gather enough strength to prepare for either the unavoidable Manthian retaliation or for the eventual offensive against Mansura.

Realizing that a direct attack or even the normal hit and run tactics were not going to garner the results desired, other options were debated by the natives. Eventually, it was decided to use the Manthian tactic against them. If they wanted to prevent the natives from attacking the city using mines, then why not use mines to keep them in?
With that in mind, the natives, after careful scouting and planning, started planting mines at the cover of night, doing the same with the main routes going out of Mansura, effectively creating and explosive belt around the city. In the same time, slow advances were made by scouts, seeking paths through the minefield. Another action involved using the intimate knowledge of the natives of the local waters and currents using them to search for a possible way in the city, even though the Manthian ships were vigilent.

And whilst all this was being said and done, the frozen soil of Halako was struggling with the rebels as they attempted to dig up tunnels through it. It was a hard manoeuvre, but it served as a backup despite the challenges it presented. And if you were not digging, scouting or planting mines, then you were being instructed in using various equipments many of them aimed at protecting from the horrors of chemical warfare. It was not by far a full preparation, but it was being done, the schooled Halakians learning the importance of preparations.

Port Mansura

Colonel Hakim sighed and rubbed his eyes. Over two sleepless days had been spent in planning and preparing for the Manthian counteroffensive. It had been dubbed Operation Apollo after the god who had brought plague and death to the Greeks, and who could strike from any direction and at any time with his poisonous arrows. The concept bore some resemblance to the counterattack Hakim and his staff had devised.

A breakout from Mansura was the obvious move, and though it would have to be done anyway there was no use in playing completely into the enemy's expectations. A bold plan was required, and Hakim felt that he had one that just might work.

Rather than simply emanating from Mansura, the advance would come from three separate directions. The second front would be provided by the Kiravians - Hakim had asked the Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy to call in its treaty obligations with the Kiravians and ask for their assistance. That alone could well double the forces arrayed against the natives, as well as providing a much larger front to advance across. Hakim believed that he was facing a fairly small, if well-armed, insurgency - their reluctance to attack Mansura had convinced him that they did not have lives to throw away - and he felt they would be hard-pressed to repel the Kiravians on such a broad front while simultaneously battling his own forces.

That was all fairly mundane, though. The third front was where things got interesting. Where they got bold.

At about one o'clock the previous morning, one of his lieutenants had pointed out that they were unnecessarily handicapping themselves by reinforcing Mansura alone. They were building up forces right where the enemy would expect an attack, and for what reason? The Union Navy could certainly go where it wished without fear of the natives, who had no meaningful warships of their own, and as the natives had themselves proven in their first assault, the Halakan coastline was much too long to guard effectively with ground troops, even if the natives were trying. Why not make an amphibious landing, completely bypassing the bulk of the native forces which were believed to be outside Mansura?

Of course, things were never that simple. The Damirezans had moved a large number of naval forces to the area, and since Hakim was almost positive that Damirez was behind the influx of modern weapons and training to the native insurgents, they were not a factor to be discounted. The Damirezans probably expected the presence of their navy to intimidate the Union Navy away from attempting any major operations of its own. However, he also had reasoned that if they wanted a hot war, they would have started one by now. Just this morning he had been notified that they were sending out diplomatic feelers regarding a mediated end to the conflict, which further convinced him. And they would have to start a hot war if they wanted to stop his next move.

Forty Manthian warships were sailing in broad daylight towards the channel separating Manthian and Damirezan territory without even attempting to be stealthy about it. All four battlecruisers were present, as well as a number of escorts. Amidst the ships were troop transports and landing vessels, filled to the brim with soldiers. They were going to conduct a full-scale amphibious landing right under the noses of the gathered Damirezan fleet, right on the shores closest to Damirezan territory - in essence, right in the natives' rear. And, since the waters through which they were sailing were legally Manthian, they were effectively daring the Damirezan navy to do squat about it.

And even as they sailed, the assault from Mansura was swinging into motion.

A direct ground attack out of Mansura had been ruled out even before it was discovered that the Halakans were planting mines themselves, for a simple reason - for the large part, the Manthians didn't know where their own mines were. They had been laid hastily and none too carefully in order to slow down the Halakan advance, and the fact that they were deployed by explosive scattering from artillery shells was not conducive to pinpoint accuracy in any case. The fact that the Manthians were as likely to step on their own mines as the enemy's ruled out a major ground offensive, and with pressure soon to come from the other two fronts, there was no need for a huge number of ground troops to pour out of Mansura. What was needed was a mobile and high-firepower force to pin the Halakans down in front of the city.

This was where the Union Army Aerospace Force, bloodied once before in Halako, had a chance for revenge.

While HARM-equipped fighters sortied to suppress enemy radars and air defenses, UAAF fighter-bombers were the weapon of choice to deliver cruise missiles tipped with sarin warheads to targets outside Mansura, offering a chemical welcome to the Halakan soldiers which could kill not only with an incautious breath, but with the barest touch to skin or a tiny amount contaminating clothing. Larger ground-launched missiles delivered warheads stuffed with VX to the Halakan rear, the persistent nerve agent offering a longterm area-denial capability which would help pin Halakan forces in a killing zone outside the city - between bullets on one side and convulsive death on the other.

And finally, helicopters came, some hunting down Halakan troops with nose-mounted machine guns and IR and radar-seeking missiles, while others ferried troops right over the mine belt and into the rear and middle of Halakan lines, where the Manthian soldiers could perhaps finally get the kind of fight that they wanted - a close-quarters, ugly, bloody brawl that would be decided by numbers and firepower. Exactly the kind of fight that insurgencies hated.

And meanwhile, with more helicopters deploying troops to the rear anywhere that VX gas wasn't, the enemy troops around Halako would hopefully be forced to stay and fight it out.

OOC: I have little time to post, so this is going too be quick.

IC: The Red Tidean forces first built up their base camps and had aircraft flown in from the Red Tidean mainland. After that, they built prison camps and headed out too the villages that had already been mapped from the air. Those that could not be reached were destroyed with thermobaric bombs.

The villages that could be reached, the soldiers went in, executed the women and children, torched the village huts, and took the men back to the prison camps. These new Zheks (as prisoners of the Red Tidean Gulag system were called) were then put too work on constructing the harbor. They would work ten hour days, with extremely little food and water.

It was calculated in the unfeeling minds of the bureaucrats and computers of the Totalitarian State of Red Tide Goverment, that in five days, all the natives captured would be dead. When that happened, the Red Tidean troops would go to more villages and repeat the process. It was estimated, again by the unfeeling bureaucrats and computers, that the entire native population under Red Tidean control would be dead within a month at the minimum, two months at the most.

Foreign Office, 1 Belowe Road

“Well that seems to wrap it all up. Gentlemen thank you, a satisfactory deal all around I think you’ll agree.”

The Foreign Secretary stood and reached for the hand of his Weccanfeld opposite number across the table. They still needed to sign the documents, which were even now being prepared, but the deal was done. For the inconsiderable sum of $500million the Principality now ‘owned’ part of Halako that had previously belonged to Weccanfeld

The delegates all shook each other hands before the Foreign Secretary motioned towards the next room. The doors were flung open and several waiters carrying trays of Champagne and nibbles moved towards the diplomats as they entered the lavishly decorated banqueting room. But the Foreign Secretary and the Colonial Secretary, who had been in attendance but not negotiating, left to go into another room.
The Foreign Secretary pulled out his mobile phone and hit speed dial #1. After two rings the phone was picked up on the other end.

“The deal is done. Begin moving the package.”

A muffled reply came on the other end and the Foreign Secretary hit the end button on his phone. Meanwhile the Colonial Secretary had picked up the phone on the desk in the room and was speaking with the Prime Minister to inform him of the success. When both men had ended their calls they shook hands and congratulated one another. With the self elation over they discussed their plans briefly before heading out to the party.

The Prince’s Ship, Lord Rothmore, Fifty Miles from The Northern peninsular owned by Weccanfeld in Halako

A biting wind blew across the open deck of the transport-cum-troopship. On deck Captain Lord Horth shivered. Despite wearing four layers of clothes and a thick winter coat with woolly hood the biting cold still seemed to penetrate through to his skin. The officer fumbled in his pocket for his cigarettes, pulling the packet out with a gloved hand he tapped the lighter out of the compartment and took the cigarette that came with it. Pressing the button down on the lighter with the cigarette now in his mouth he swore audibly as the wind blew out the flame before it caught. Turning his back to the wind he tried again, getting just enough heat to set fire to the cancer stick. The first drag was the best as he breathed in deeply, drawing the smoke into his lungs before letting it out into the cold air. Even as he moved to the rail to lean on and look over the edge he heard the sound of a hatch opening and then the familiar voice of a fellow officer.

“Hey there’s a fag on the end of that cigarette.”

“Good morning Captain Champion.”

“Good morning to you Captain Horth, or have you made Colonel yet?”

“No Captain, still very much the same rank as you. Perhaps you’d like to explain your interruption though.”

“Just thought I’d tell you that the Colonel wants all officers to report to the briefing room. The diplomats got the deal done, we got ourselves a mission finally.”

“Babysitting a bunch of colonists in a frozen wasteland isn’t what I’d call a mission Champion.

“Five minutes, the briefing room.”

Champion retired back through the watertight hatch, locking it into position as he did so. Horth remained outside, taking drags on his cigarette until the butt was virtually singing his fingers. His gloved right hand flicked the butt out to sea and with a wry look out to sea he made his way back into the superstructure of the ship. It was typical for a military vessel, bland and minimalistic.

Horth made his way up two narrow ladders to the briefing room, or the Captains mess room as it had formerly been known. Opening the hatch to the room, Horth was hit by a blast of heat that came from the space heater inside. Seeing most of the other officers already there he moved in quickly and removed the thick jacket, placing it on the back of the chair that he sat on. He moved his thigh holster slightly to stop the butt of his USP compact scraping the chair during the briefing. Even as he did so the Battalion commander and intelligence officer entered the room and with the rest of the assembled officers he stood.

Colonel Jacob Haldane was not an old man, but nor was he particularly young. He hadn’t fought any wars, making his way up through command thanks to his connections rather than talent. The Battalion I-3, or Intelligence Officer, was quite different and had earnt his Major rank through hard work and natural talent. It was he who would lead the briefing, using the maps on the walls.

“Good morning gentlemen. Nice to see you all here so early in the day. Now you’ve all been given an outline of our task here, but its time to go into some more details with regards the situation in the region. We have several power blocs vying for control over the island group. New Manth are currently engaged with a native rebellion in their territory, the Damirians are suspected to be funding that although we have no proof of anything just hearsay. Redtide2 are to be considered the greatest threat to the security of our new territory, their reputation of out and out conquest for the sake of it is well documented and they have a sizeable force in the region.

Our primary mission is to establish our colony in the area currently held by Weccani settlers. Most are relocating but some are staying on as well. To that end we have prefabricated buildings in the hold to house us and the colonists until the proper buildings are established for the garrison and settlers. Initial settlements will be started here and here, alongside native villages. Our main garrison will be constructed on the slight high ground away from the coast whilst an early warning radar will be positioned near this mine here on top of the mountain. Secondary objectives are the establishment of a port facility to handle large ships to export the raw materials and a Military Intelligence station to monitor the area. Marines will be landing to ensure coastal security in the coming days.

Initial landings will be done by helicopters from the Amphibious Carrier Stanmore. They will land on deck and embark D Company from 1250 hours today. D Company will then secure the native village codenamed ‘Victor-Four’ in accordance with the current occupiers. F Company will embark at 1340hours and land at 1400 on the high ground codename ‘Hill 460’ where you will establish an observation post and remain in place overnight to provide top cover. 1st and 2nd Platoons from E Company will embark at 1500hours and will secure the small fishing quay by 1500 in ‘Victor-Two’ here. 3rd Platoon will remain embarked as a mobile reserve.

Rules of Engagement are to not fire unless you are fired at. Radio reports every fifteen minutes for the three hours after your respective landings. Every half hour after that. We expect a smooth transition; there is no reason to expect hostilities. The natives will know of our arrival as will the local administration. The Colonel would like to say a few words.”

”It’s a simple mission. Be wary but don’t go trigger happy. This isn’t the Casiale colony alright. Ok lads, unless there are any questions go and brief your men. The armouries will be open from 1130 for ammunition issues. Lets not fuck this up.”

.....1400 hours, the sky above Halako

Twelve Merlin helicopters were flying in a rough V formation. Head winds meant that they were a couple of minutes late approaching their objective, Hill 460. Inside the lead helicopter, Captain Horth sat near the rear ramp on a terribly uncomfortable fold down chair. The personal radio in his left ear was speaking constantly as he was hooked into the command net, Captain Champion and D Company had arrived in the main village and linked up with the former owners. Sitting next to Horth was one of the Heavy Weapons squad carrying a shortened GPMG instead of the standard issue R-2 Rifle. Until a minute before that man had been sitting on the ramp of the helicopter watching the ocean go by below him, the machine gun pointed out the rear like a stubby tail.

The loadmaster on the aircraft was in the seat opposite Horth and stuck up a single finger at him. At the same time the helicopter seemed to take a jerk downwards as it began its descent towards the LZ. In the cockpit the co-pilot looked right to see a pair of Merlin’s equipped as gunships coming down with him, four transports came on the left.

Horth unstrapped himself from the seatbelt and motioned for his men to do similar. Those in the first five choppers carried no rucksacks or excess equipment just in case. They would be ferried in later. As those onboard Horth’s helicopter stood they shifted their weapons from the resting sling position so that they were in their hands, most also brought their goggles down from their helmets and fixed them over their eyes. The ramp started coming down to its position before the helicopter had even passed a hundred feet, flaring as it did so.

Hovering only a foot above the air the loadmaster motioned for the men to start disembarking, jumping the distance to the ground and then moving swiftly off in all directions. Horth was the first out, holding his CR-2 Carbine tightly, and he broke left, going down on a knee and looking through his reflex red dot sight. After half a dozen men ran past him he stood again and ran towards the new line his men had established twenty feet from the helicopter. Even as he got there the tremendous down blast from the helicopter nearly blew him off his feet as it powered back into the sky and the second one came in. Looking up he saw a gunship variant with its stubby wings pass over the LZ, taking a circular orbit to provide cover and reconnaissance.

With the third helicopter letting off its troops there was a full platoon on the ground. Horth sent it to secure a further perimeter whilst he waited with his radioman at the LZ for the seven others to come in. The men moved slowly in their thickly padded clothes, their rifles were all held in gloved hands and most were covered in white cloth or rag to camoflauge them and keep them slightly warmer.

The Bridge of the Amphibious Carrier Stanmore

“F Company reports that they are established and digging in. E Company is deploying fully now and D Company reports its down in full strength and securing the position. All clear for settlers and heavy equipment to begin moving in Admiral.” the ensign reported.

“Very well. Signal the Galaxy to begin heavy lift operations. Bring the formation nearer to the coastline. All merchant ships go to anchor according to plan two.” The Admiral turned to the ships Captain. “A successful operation Captain.”

The younger, more cynical, man looked at him managing to conceal his disbelief that the Admiral was declaring it a success barely two hours into the mission. Success could only be measured over a much longer period of time, economic gains from mines yet undug, a friendly populace who didn’t attempt open rebellion and a variety of other mitigating factors.

But one thing was for sure; Neo-colonialism was alive and well in the world.

The informational flux between the New Manthians and the Kiravian Empire was not missed by intel officers in Northern Halako. It didn’t take them much to do the simple math and realize what it was all about.

”Seems that the Kiravians want to play ball too,” one of the officers in charge of the situation conversed with a colleague.

”Not exactly the best of circumstance I’d say, they’re allied to us and quite close, any misunderstandings here could lead to some rather unpleasant conclusions.” the other man replied, leaning a support pillar and looking at the falling snow.

“Well, if they play with fire they might as well prepare to get burned. Come on, let’s get inside, it’s too cold here.”

This conversation was not the only one waged regarding the theme. It was hoped that the Kiravians would not act on the pact they had signed with the Manthians, but, given the facts this was doubtable unless some odds were reworked. There were some rather sensitive treaties that were placed in danger by any hostilities in the region and in the end it all came up to the cost versus benefit debate, but this was all a matter of diplomacy.

Soon after the first report regarding the issue was placed on the table of the foreign department, reactions appeared.

From: Foreign Department of The Principality Protectorate of Northern Halako
To: Kiravian Empire
Subject: Diplomatic visit

In order to further our relations with our regional neighbours and add to regional stability, we would like to announce out our desire for a formal visit to the Kiravian colony in Halako.

Foreign Department of Northern Halako.

In the same time, albeit in a much more subtle manner, The Principality sent various signs to the Kiravian officials. It was all a matter of how they were to be interpreted now.

---

In the Manthian holdings, the rebels were finally getting over the euphoria of their initial success. Information provided by a third part placed a rather gloomy outlook for the incoming winter months. The possibility of a whole new enemy joining the fight was disconcerting and they didn’t like the thought at all, but they realized that unless they adapted the battle was already lost.

The vast reserves of Halakian soldiers just miles away in Northern Halako were inaccessible, the locals unwilling to disturb the goodwill shown by the Damirans so far by sending significant amounts of troops to their aid, but even so, small trickles of soldiers made their way to the region. It was a welcome boost, but nowhere near enough to represent a decisive factor in the struggle.

With more and more information relayed to them, the intention of the enemy became partially clear. It was only after the snow started falling that a gathering took place and a new strategy was prepared.

”Odds are they’ll attempt to overrun our forces at Mansura and, in the eventuality they manage to convince the Kiravians to assist them punch through the southern borders pinning us in a few resistance points,” the officer, now acknowledged as the de facto leader of the rebellion pointed out to those present.

”Then we’ll fight like a cornered animal,” an older man spoke, his face betraying his anger at the news.

”That would place us exactly where they want us, is it not the hunted animal that loses its life once it is cornered?” the officer retorted.

”The what would you have us do?” another elder asked.

”We deny them a fight and prepare a welcoming party for them. We’ll litter the country with traps and prepare to resume a guerilla style of warfare. We’ll be outnumbered, but it won’t matter if they can’t bring their numbers to the fore.”

Shortly afterwards the operation commenced, the natives eager to prepare trap after trap.

---

”That’s not good,” an officer aboard the Damiran fleet in the area whispered as he read the radar signatures on his display. The Manthians were making yet another move as the blips were showing.

”A dare ey?” his superior remarked, leaning over his chair and looking at the display. ”They’re testing us,” came the statement from the admiral in charge of the fleet. ”If only…” the man whispered with a hint of regret.

Unfortunately for the Manthians, while this manoeuvre had the benefit of setting some clear limits and showing one up to the Damirans, it also revealed their battle plan to the officers aboard the ships. Unlike the natives, these soldiers were well versed in the art of warfare and recognized the move for what it was. Short messages departed from the fleet and the natives received a warning via secure means.

With the urgent message in mind, they knew exactly how to greet their guests. They didn’t knew where the Manthians were going to drop, but once they did, they would enter a true roller coaster ride, booby trapped at all corners.

---

”Shit!” a rebel swore as he dodged another round from a helicopter flying over his head. He was among the last ones retreating from Mansura. The outskirts of the city being witness to a blood bath as the Manthians used VX gas against the rebels.

”Hang on brother,” he talked to a man carried on a stretcher. They had been warned about these weapons, but the damage they did was beyond anything they had encountered.

”Faster,” he yelled at the other natives with him. Perhaps the Manthians hoped to rat them out with this move, but there were plenty of weapons able to take out helicopters in their ranks, and only a fool would miss the planes dropping their deadly charge behind their lines.

”Just a bit more!” he yelled, signalling another to provide cover. It was perhaps fortunate that the effective in this area were relatively limited as losses could have been much higher if the head count was greater.

”Made it,” exhausted he collapsed in a tunnel before starting to move again. There was no time. They had certainly received a heavy blow, but the Manthians were not going to come out of it cheaply either, traps providing a nasty surprise whilst tunnels denied them a major advantage in limiting the rebel’s movement.

Even so, two hundred and fifteen men died that day on the rebel’s side and the fires of revenge were burning brighter than ever.

News of this action did cause reaction though and, using means as stealthy as possible in the light of the increasing Manthian Naval presence, means to combat this threat were provided, in white.

But given the double edged nature of the VX gas, the natives made sure that the Manthians were to have a taste of their own medicine should they attempt to use the same tactic again. After all the gas does not recognize friend from foe and one tear in the suit could be devastating.

---

But while the New Manth colony situation was heating, another affair was brewing; Red Tide. Even though the natives in the territory they acquired from Kurona were evicted as fast as possible there were still some that could not be convinced to abandon the territory.

There were no disillusions as to what the Red Tideans intended to do with the land, but given the political implications any actions could have in the context, The Principality encouraged an evacuation. There would be time for other action to be taken, but for now other affairs had the eyes of the nation.

As usually the natives were well received in Northern Halako and the numbers bolstered once more.

”Do contact the new comers,” words flew in the office of the Foreign Department head. Besides Red Tide yet another nation appeared on the scene, James-. Diplomatic approaches were to be made in order to garner their intention for the region.

From: Foreign Department of The Principality Protectorate of Northern Halako

Subject: Diplomatic Visit

In light of your recent acquisition in Halako, our governments would like to welcome you to the region and invite a representative of your fair nation for a visit in the recently established capital of our nation.

Across the waters of Halako, a helicopter travelled towards the ships of New Manth. The diplomats onboard were to try and settle the affair before it reached new, undesired conclusions.

IC: The unfamiliar sound of helicopter turbines twisted the head of the village farmer. He had never seen a TC-2, or any machine for that matter, in his life and stared in awe as the small armada of transport helicopters roared overhead. This village was one of the more isolated ones, positioned on the lower side of the mountain.

The farmer stood rooted in both fear and amazement as the transport helicopter's lowered themselves on to a corn field the farmer had worked so hard on. Then the sliding door on the side of the monstrous helicopter slid open and the farmer thought that he was seeing demons... when in fact he was only seeing State Guardsmen...

Although perhaps demons would have been slightly more merciful.

^The standard combat uniform of the State Guard*

The farmer turned to run only to find more TC-2 Helicopters hovering above the village, more Guardsmen rappelling down the ropes hanging from the side.

It was the last thing the farmer consciously saw as the butt of the M-100 Assualt Rifle descended on the back of his head. The Guardsmen, as they had done so far, executed the women and children, and seized the men. The men were loaded onto spare helicopters and taken away to the almost-completed Port Facility/Military Base.

Any evidence of the village was obliterated by Fuel-Air Explosives dropped from H/K-1 Attack Aircraft.

It was the last village to die in Province-5438.

However, a few young girls managed to escape the slaughter and were simply trying to get away from the 'demons' who had killed their families.

A few days later

With the port facility completed, the few suviving Zheks were executed and info dispatched back to the Red Tidean Mainland. Numerous transports, loaded down with surveying, mining, engineering, and other equipment left Red Tide and set sail for Halako. Behind them, a military transport convoy was preparing to leave, in order to bring in a Army Corps(175,000 men) and secure the colony for good.

Mansura

"Casualty reports are still coming in, but by the numbers we have we can safely call it a victory. At least two hundred confirmed kills, and an unknown but likely large number of enemy wounded. The ones who have escaped got out throught tunnels and such things. They are trying to bring their wounded along for the most part."

Hakim nodded, rubbing his days-old stubble contemplatively.

"All the better for us then. They can't fight and will slow down the rest. Have you got the final casualty reports for us?"

"Moderate, sir. Twenty-one killed, fifty-eight wounded. A lot of the killed were in the helicopter that went down, we're still not sure whether it was enemy fire or mechanical failure. Went down over a minefield, so I'm afraid that information will be a while coming. But for the most part the natives retreated as soon as we started hitting them with VX. There were no aircraft losses besides the one, though that's more due to the enemy not sticking around to fight than to IR countermeasures."

"Hmm. Doubtless that will change eventually, if only when they run out of places to hide. Or when they figure out that no matter how hard they try, a foot soldier can't outrun a missile or a helicopter... Still, a good day for us. You may pass on the casualty reports to NTC as soon as a better count of enemy dead is available."

"Sir."

The lieutenant left the room with a snapped salute, leaving Hakim and his officers to oversee the next phase of the attack. With the recent victory, and the message from the Kiravians confirming that they would honor their promises, things were looking up.

*****

Outside Mansura, the first phase of the attack was over, but the pressure would only be increased over the coming days. The time when the Halakan natives had had easy pickings, preying on tankers and mechanized infantrymen who were used to open country and conventional battles, was over. Mountain infantry specialized in operating in the rough Halakan terrain would be much more difficult to run circles around, and more alert to potential traps and ambushes. In addition, where high technology had failed older and surer methods were being used, and native warriors emerging from tunnels would hear not only the clatter of pursuing helicopters but the baying of bloodhounds snapping at their heels. The Manthians had no intentions of allowing the insurgents, tired by battle and burdened with wounded companions, to simply melt away into the countryside. They would be hunted down and run into the ground.

Inner Halakan Sea

"Not a peep out of them. They're lighting us up all right, and plenty of radio chatter, but no aggressive moves."

"Very good, lieutenant."

The Damirezan fleet was remaining passive, just as al-Shazli had expected. He knew that men back in Zone 2 were working on Damirezan codes, and that they hadn't made any progress yet in cracking them, but he didn't think he needed cryptographers to tell him the gist of the Damirezan communications. It was pretty obvious what they would be thinking given the situation they were in.

al-Shazli was sure that the insurgents would be warned of an impending landing, one way or the other, but if they hoped to do anything about it anytime soon they would realize that destroying the Manthian-built rail lines had been a mistake. Without the benefit of sea transport, and with the skies a realm of certain death even if the natives had any aircraft, any troops responding to his landing would have to do so on foot, from possibly hundreds of miles away. As the natives had themselves demonstrated in their initial invasion, the country was far too big and the coastline far too long to defend with just a few thousand troops. By the time any significant native force could arrive, his men would doubtless be well ashore and driving inland, and in addition to all the normal benefits of opening a third front, they would be in good position to cut off the arrival of any more reinforcements from Damirezan-owned lands.

In less than an hour soldiers would begin hitting the beaches in the designated landing zone. Already helicopters were lifting off to carry advance troops to secure the area, and dozens of UAVs were scoping out the surrounding area for any signs of enemy presence, trusting in thin airframes and tiny, largely emission-free electric motors to evade detection themselves.

Meanwhile, a single heavy cruiser had been detached from the force to receive the Damirezan diplomats. White-uniformed sailors stood in neat ranks on the aft deck of the Massaua, and as the helicopter touched down a band struck up the Damirezan anthem. A week or two ago this meeting might have been a hurried backroom deal conducted to get the Union out of an embarrassing war as quickly as possible, but not anymore. With the recent military successes, and the anticipation of more to come, the red carpet was being rolled out - so much as is possible on a ship designed first and foremost for war - and the meeting would proceed as slowly and conspicuously as the Manthian diplomats pleased. There was a strong feeling both among the diplomats and officers present that Manthian soldiers were rebounding from the back foot and that in the coming negotiations they would be bargaining from a position not of weakness, but of strength.

In front of the sailors, accompanied by a small group of the ships' senior officers, was a tall black man in a white suit, the same diplomat who had negotiated the Echoese surrender in fact. His grin revealed a momentary glint of gold as he stepped forward to greet the Damirezan delegation.

The Inner Sea of Halako was quiet, calm setting above the waves and underneath them. In a strange display ships of two nations stood motionless, watching, waiting for the other to do a move. The Damirans knew that the Manthians weren’t going to make a move and the Manthians probably knew that the Damirans were going to keep silent, but the pressure was nonetheless the same.

On board the flagship of the Damiran fleet in the area, Admiral Jonathan Wallace watched at the tactical display, his hands tense as he took in all the details offered by the various instruments of detection.

”One hour, thirteen minutes and twenty seconds,” he finally proclaimed, lifting his eyes from the hologram and looking at everyone in the room.

”Sir?” one of those present dared to ask, ”If I may…”

”That’s how long a naval battle here would take if we were not to take into account the missile batteries we have installed on the islands,” swiftly the man lifted from his chair and smiled at his officers, ”But then again it’s better that we don’t get to test my theory.”

The men and women chuckled at this but nonetheless the tension remained. It was not a pleasant tension as the higher ups made it clear that no conflict was desired in the area, but all ships of the fleet were prepared for engagement at a moments notice. Chances were however that The Principality will win a victory on paper whilst seemingly losing a battle on land. This was perfectly fine with the men and women serving on the ship and in the fleet. This way there was no blood spilt in conflict and both parties got something out of the deal.

There was however a dark cloud looming at the horizon, the actions of Red Tide not to the liking of those protecting The Principality from threat. At least the Manthians had the decency of giving the natives a chance, however slim that was. But that was not the concern for now. First a resolution had to be reached with the Manthians and only afterwards other actions could be decided upon.

”All Manthian ships accounted for, submarines continuing operations…” all went ahead as normal with the fleet.

---

”We’ll be reaching the Massaua in a moment gentlemen,” the helicopter pilot informed the officials carried by the metallic bird. This meeting had been carefully planned and now the the Damiran Diplomats had to safely reach a conclusion with their Manthian counterparts, many awaiting the result of this encounter.

”Intel collected on the Manthians shows that they prefer to bargain from a position of strength, and as a result a change of the situation in the field would make them delay any progress until they regain control over the situation. Now…” the diplomats recollected the words from their briefing. Knowledge about those that were their partners at this conference was definitely important and it was going to be put to good use.

The reception was quite warm confirming the intel relayed to them and the face of the lead Manthian negotiator familiar, the same man that concluded the deal regarding the Far Echo Islands. This was definitely going to be interesting, but if there was one thing the men were sure about that was their ability in cutting out a deal, that and the fact that the coffers of Damirez were always overflowing with money, the country being literally obsessed with work, but surprisingly enough not with profits. True, the cash gathered, but they were reinvested, thus leading to more and more profits, which were in turn reinvested. A never ending circle that allowed the unique style of life the Damirans had and the richness that supported their mostly non –aggressive policies.

After all the pleasantries were said and done, the two parties set at the table and an offer was made.

”Two hundred fifteen billions.

That was the price offered by the country for the Manthian colony, a way to end the conflict before it escalated, insuring a friendly relation with New Manth afterwards. The moment for the true dance had come.

---

”So many…” one of the survivors of the Mansura battle repeated over and over again the same words. It had been a surprise they had not expected, but now, now they begun to regroup and prepare for retaliation.

”We can’t outrun bullets,” another survivor spoke in a refuge, ”For now we rest.” They were well hidden from the enemy a safe heaven of sorts. They knew it wouldn’t last, but for a few moments they had some peace.

Far to the east, near the closest point to the Damiran Protectorate the Manthians were coming, but the natives knew. Whilst an exchange was deemed as being risky, some of the best troops were stationed nearby, only recently arrived from the North, their numbers were not large, but were the negotiations to fail, they were poised to deliver a surprise to the enemy.

In the south, insurgent units hid and prepared. If the Kiravians came they would find nothing. Until they were hit that is.

Unknown to those in Halako at the highest levels a conversation was taking place. The president himself chatting freely with the leader of New Manth on a secure line.

ooc: under construction

Whilst natives rested in one hideout, safe for the moment from pursuing forces, another redoubt not to far away was not so secure. Here, the natives had stayed just a little too long, and been just a little too careless in covering their trail.

Not that they could be blamed, really. Exhausted from their flight and carrying wounded, they had simply grown sloppy. Now as they panted for breath under the shelter of a shallow cave, they were about to pay the price of, after all, just being human.

It started with the crack of a single rifle outside, then the thud of a body hitting the earth - the sentry had been alert, but not alert enough to spot a sniper almost a kilometer away - but by the time the few insurgents in fighting shape had scrambled for their guns, three grenades had sailed through the cave entrance and with a series of bright flashes the fight was over before it began. All that was left was the screaming of a few wounded survivors, and, after a minute's wait, the Manthians moved in to finish the job.

The enemy who snipes from afar and never shows his face is among the most hated by the average infantrymen, and the surviving natives were lucky to receive just a double tap from these. One man, however, received a different welcome.

"Well what do we have here..." a soldier muttered, looking down at the bleeding form.

Musab Kadir had not had a good day.

*****

In northeastern Halako the hunt continued apace. Now that the fight had broken out of static lines and into the open countryside once more, it was an imperative goal of the campaign that he not be allowed to regroup or stop to set more traps. Any native moving by daylight ran the chance of being spotted by pursuers, helicopters, or UAVs - which, running near-silently on sparse electric engines, were providing detailed coverage of the whole theater of battle from only a few hundred to a few thousand feet in the air. And of course, those who stayed in one place were merely exchanging an uncertain death for a certain one.

The insurgents in Halako were better trained and better armed than most, but they lacked the most valuable weapon an insurgency wielded over most modern armies - the ability to absorb losses and replace them cheaply and quickly. Without that, inflict enough casualties and they would, sooner or later, simply collapse.

******

The commander of the Manthian flotilla had reached a somewhat different conclusion than his Damiran counterpart - in an open battle his fleet would be lucky to last ten minutes. Of course, there were a few surprises that could be pulled on the Damirans, and ten minutes was time to do quite a lot of damage, but he rather preferred not to die. There were to be no unexpected moves from the Manthian side of the channel.

Aircraft were already scouring the near shores for signs of opposition, however, and troop-laden helicopters would begin to touch down any minute. How much fighting they would have to do would, of course, be determined by the outcome of the negotiations being conducted even as the fleets stared each other down...

*****

Halys Mattan smiled as the Damiran diplomats filed in, introduced themselves, and perhaps helped themselves to the bowl of pretzels that had been provided for casual or thoughtful munching. He fiddled with a ring idly as pleasantries were exchanged and small talk made, mainly between his staffers and the Damirans. They had been instructed to move the proceedings along at a leisurely pace, after all, and they made a good effort at it. Not that the talk wasn't laced with certain undertones, as all good diplomatic talk is. Or seems. He chuckled...

Still though the talk eventually came to hard business. Mattan sat back as the Damirans made their offer, and smiled.

"Allow me to present our counter-offer. Now, you may not be aware, but I have in my folder here..."

He gestured casually towards a folder lying open on the table. He'd left it upside down, of course, because you couldn't make things too obvious, but what self-respecting diplomat couldn't read small print upside down without looking like it?

"...certain information pertaining to the sale of Kuronan lands to Red Tide, and I must note that in that case the sum came to six hundred billion."

Mattan smiled, gold glinting once again.

"Now I am sure you will point out that our portion of Halako is somewhat smaller than the Kuronan lands were, but then of course we have gone to some small trouble to keep them. I'm sure that you have heard news of the insurgency which cropped up there some time ago, and indeed I must note that were it not for the efforts of Manthian troops, you no doubt would have a difficult and time-consuming task in suppressing it. Fortunately, Union troops have made a substantial dent in that task for you, but at significant expense! Certainly the work which will make Halako much safer for your men deserves some compensation?"

Mattan watched the Damirans carefully.

"Three hundred and twenty billion is my counter-offer. A cheap price to pay for the blood we have shed."

Southern Waters off ofNew Manthian Halako

As instructed by Manthian tacticians, the New Harbour Provincial Forces were moving in for an assault.

The engagement was to take place at a Halakan-held shipping depot on the southeastern coast of Manthian territory. The goal was to gain leverage for the Manthians at the bargaining table. The reason the Kiravians were doing it was to preserve New Harbour's existance. The target was in range.

The counter proposal was a bit ‘expensive’ for the like of the Damiran diplomats, but, upon consultation with the data folders and confirmation of various issues, a conclusion was reached.

”It’s obvious that there are indeed expenses that your country had to endure in maintaining control over the territory that represents the subject of this negotiation and in making it safe from the small issues at hand, this is why upon consideration we have decided to accept your offer, even though we consider the price to be… a bit steep.”

The general opinion in Damirez regarding this affair was that it had to stop as soon as possible. There were other events that captured the attention of the nation and a prolonged ‘situation’ in this area was not considered acceptable.

It was however quite clear that the sum of money required by the Manthians was quite excessive for the amount of land in their possession, or at least that was what the diplomats considered it to be, but with several companies eager to throw in exchange for a piece of the action finances were not exactly hard to find. North Halako showed a lot of promise and already some of the initial expenses were being recovered and with the local government willing to do some concessions in exchange for the various services done by The Principality the deal was to be turned eventually in quite a lucrative endeavor.

On the other hand, high level negotiations between the two nations were taking place and this was a small price in many opinions to pay for what was to come.

”So am I safe to assume that we have a deal?” the Damiran diplomat asked looking at his counterpart.

---

”Nice and easy,” one of the natives whispered as a helicopter enter his sights. ”Let’s see how you like this!” he exclaimed as he unleashed a missile at the gunship that was until recently involved in the hunt of the retreating Halakian forces. So far it had been a success for the Manthians, the evacuation of the wounded and the general retreat from around Mansura providing them with many opportunities, but as they went deeper in the countryside the number of traps already in place was staggering and no longer were they able to hound the tired and weakened soldiers that fled Mansura, but rested and prepared rebels.

It was not a major counter offensive so to say, but instead a very nasty reminder to the Manthians that they had yet to rule the land. In the overall scenario it would look as if the Manthians had obtained an important victory and indeed, the loss of many warriors was a grave loss for the Halakians, given their limited numbers, but it was not by far a decisive engagement.

”They’re coming, behind those rocks!” one of the men in a cave ordered his comrades. ”Use the tunnel! We’re not hanging around here any more,” upon realizing the numbers of the enemy he reached a new conclusion, ”And pull that wire!”

Only seconds after the location was abandoned, several grenades exploded in the closed space, almost certain to kill anyone in should the natives chose to remain. But once the Manthians entered a grim surprise presented itself to them. In a flash, charges around the entrance tunnel and in the cave detonated, catching all who had ventured inside it under the resulting debris.

War was never a nice sight.

”Low intensity fighting according to intel, several explosions in the countryside, a move made by the Kiravians, nothing major otherwise.”

”I’m sure those involved in those fights don’t think they’re in a low intensity engagement now. Thank you for the report,” the Admiral thanked his intel officer as he took in the new data about the battle field.

”If this continues any longer it’s going to have a messy result,” he concluded. The entire fleet was repositioning itself and his submarines were changing approach vectors towards the enemy ships, or at least he thought they were, total silence being of extreme importance in underwater operations.

On the Northern Halako territory, various actions were taking place. It was quite obvious that the government there hoped for a successful deal, but certain contingencies were in place for any ‘misfortunate’ events that could happen.

---

As the Kiravians poured in Halakian territory there was no move made to oppose them. They were left alone, to advance under the fake semblance of peace, so that they were to believe that there was no opposition waiting for them.

But when they ventured past a certain point, the fun started. Already experienced with tactics that needed to be used in this certain area the Halakians prepared quite a surprise for the Kiravians. Not by far as many resources that were being allocated to the fight to the Manthians made their way to the south, but unlike the Manthians the Kiravians had yet to engage the natives so far and as a result, the traps and ambushes were less known to their soldiers. They too will pay a price for venturing in foreign territory.

OOC: So, no resistance at the shipping depot? Anyways, I still need some numeric data on the native forces.

IC:

New Manthian Halako

The Novaharbouran forces had taken the shipping depot easily, and commenced advancement further inland. They'd occasionally detonate something, capture a village here or there, but didn't meet much intensive combat. What had happened to the fierce, anticolonialist freedom-fighters that had caused so much damage elsewhere in new Manth's colony? The Kiravian commanders were, though not overly, wary. Things were quiet.

Too quiet.

The rebellion in the New Manth colony had been noted with some concern by the Red Tideans. It was obvious where the support for them was coming from, but in the twisted game of international diplomacy, nothing could be done about it.

So, even as equipment and personnel began to exploit the Red Tidean colony and lay infrastructure, the Red Tidean Government continued to worry.

And then it reached a decision...

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM TSRT GOVERNMENT
"Due to the recent revolts in the New Manthian colony in Halako, the Totalitarian State has reached the decision to prevent any uprisings in its own territory in the region. A regiment of Kruschev missiles are to be shipped to Halako, along with their warheads. In addition, a large stockpile of chemical agents and tactical nuclear weapons is to be established in the region."
End Message

OOC: Info on the Kruschev here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=208&hl=
1 Regiment=50 missiles and launchers. In this event, the launchers are of the A-version. Meaning one hundred-fifty, 150 kiliton warheads are to be deployed.

ooc: going to move on a bit in time here

Also, this post is still somewhat in progress, but I will have to finish it later;

"I do wish to make it clear that as part of this sale Damirez and its satellite states will agree to honor current arrangements regarding the distribution of territory and borders between what have been Manthian lands and our neighbors to the west, the Kiravian Empire. The Kiravians have fulfilled their obligations to us, and in return the Union has an obligation to ensure that they do not suffer any disadvantage or loss through our departure. Similarly, I must convey my government's desire that conditional to our arrangement the current insurgency be kept out of Kiravian lands, by whatever means you prefer."

Mattan leaned back in his chair.

"Granted that, I believe that this arrangement of ours will be most successful. I will arrange for our soldiers to cease offensive operations and begin withdrawing as of tomorrow morning. Of course, they will have to defend themselves against any insurgent attacks, but I am most hopeful that that will not prove to be a problem. Officers will be available to help smooth the process of transition as your men take over."

He stood, gathering up his folder.

"It is nearly dark now, and while the hospitality of the ship is yours for the asking, I suspect you may want to return and confer with your government. In any case I must confer with mine, so I hope you'll excuse me. If everything remains satisfactory, I will be ready to make this official tomorrow."

"Contact front!" came the harsh bellow, as the explosion blossomed out of the cave mouth. The first two over-eager soldiers were caught full-on, one going down clearly for good, the other screaming and thrashing with a shrapnel-lacerated face and steel fragments deep in both legs. They had been newly rotated in to replace exhausted men, but the remainder of the squad, though worn, had learned from prior experience in Halako not to rush ahead incautiously.

A few tried shots into the tunnel mouth even as rocks tumbled down, though the odds of hitting much were small. As the dust settled, two men ran to the aid of their wounded fellow, while most of the rest of the squad fanned out to cover the medics while they were in the open.

"Bastards got away. We won't clear that entrance in any time, even if that's the only trap." a private said, spitting in disgust. But his sargeant, standing nearby, shook his head.

"Tunnels don't go far. When they come out, and it'll be nearby, we'll find them from above. Even if they wait 'till dark."

He surveyed the landscape coolly from behind his DR-83, before motioning to a third man a little way off, who made his way over.

"Let Brigade know that our fox here has gone to ground. We'll need a few eyes monitoring the area for when he comes back out."

The other man nodded, and was on the radio in a few moments. The hunt was on.

The GF-11 Archer had been flying over Halako for six hours on its battery, and during that time its impersonal sensors had sent two retreating groups of natives to their deaths - men who had been careful to hide their trails on land, but had not realized that the quiet, open sky they had known all their lives was now an enemy. No chattering of helicopter blades nor roar of jet engines would alert to its presence as it circled the hill like a vulture on sparse electric engines, cameras and IR sensors recording the movements of the Manthian soldiers, the wounded man, a flash of movement as some small forest creature fled the scene far below...

There, a small dark spot on the far side of a ridge, and figures detaching from the shadow one by one, more evident as heat blobs than in visible light. These ones had been more careful than the others, but not careful enough. For the machine there was no satisfaction in a job well done, just data to be captured and sent on, but in Mansura a man monitoring several screens gave a quick grin. Information flitted over the radio waves once more, and down in the forest glade, the sargeant smiled a joyless grin as the radioman relayed his message.

His second soldier had died during the interval, the screams dying down to occasional, drug-deadened groans, and finally being replaced by a heavy stillness. It had been an ugly death, and the sight had put the others in no mood for mercy. When they caught up with their quarry again - and they were no more than a few minutes behind - it would not be a pretty fight, nothing for the cameras circling above or for the Union's incessant propagandists to trumpet. The men who filed out of the glade, clutching rifles with white-knuckled grips, would leave those moments buried anonymously, in the darkness of the deep Halakan wilderness.

In the morning they would leave the continent forever, but this night, while the long hunted was still the hunter and their tormentors were still in front of them, there would be no rest. Wars are after all not fought by states or statistics but by men, and a wounded man will take an eye for an eye. This night, there would be blood.

******

About four hours later, as dawn crept into the sky once more, the radio waves crackled to life once more, and across Halako the offensives slowed and came to a halt, soldiers leaving off the chase after a long night. There had been no official contact with the natives, just with the Damirans, and though there was an unofficial and very circumspect understanding that the Damirans would see to their side of the ceasefire, it was still a watchful and wary army which gathered its dead in the morning, bringing them back to the seaside and the massive transports that would bring flag-draped coffins back to Manth.

The enemy dead were left where they lay, mostly untouched, but some had been mutilated while they had still been alive, and others after they had died. Despite diplomatic visits, treaties, and even backroom discussions at the very pinnacle of each nations' government, on the ground, the Manthians ended the fight as the Halakans had begun it: bitterly.
