Hi im a newbie and i want to know how many people to enlist

Well, usually it's around 1.5% peacetime from what I recall, and up to a maximum 5% draft in wartime before your economy suffers.

It really depends on your nation and style of government. For a modern 1st world western style democracy you should be looking at 0.5% or less of your population being in the military.

Generally speaking the worse off your poulation/economy the larger the percentage you can afford to have in the military.

thats is the basic straight forward method, if you want to make a bit more complicated you start looking at actual budgets and exciting things like personnel spending ;)

having compulsory military service can change it abit as well

You'll need to think about other branches too, like, take that delightful little 1.5%, then subdivide what you want in your navy air force and marine corps. Then you'll wanna start to save up for various supergreat happyglee vehicles, ships, jets, etc.

My nation has a standing military of 3% regardless, as we are surrounded by similarly sized, and ultra-modern dictatorial nations. Of course, this figure is admittedly a bit excessive.

Basically, you can max out at 5% before everything hits the fan, of course the higher your percent, then theoretically the worse your people are paid, which could have all manner of effects, if you're willing to use your imagination.
