History

While the rest of America was slugging through the economic troubles caused by Black Thursday, a former Canadian politician, Mackenzie Bennet, was trying to spark the fire of secession in the normally sleepy states of Dakota. Funded by several farming businesses, Mackenzie Bennet began a campaign for state secession, preaching secession as the only way the Dakotas could retain any of their former economic power. The people of the Dakotas soon agreed, and on April 19th, 1930, the Dakota Confederation was created, with a surprised Canadian politician at its head.

Mackenzie Bennet, now the Commissioner of the Dakotas, quickly tried to consolidate the economic power of his nation. As one of the major cattle ranching and wheat farming regions in the former United States, Bennet used this to his advantage, and began several trade initiatives with Canada and, as Canada was still a part of her, Great Britain. During this time of economic consolidation, Bennet negotiated the Wheat and Cattle Act of 1930, which gave the British Empire (and later the British Commonwealth) advantageous trade rights involving Dakotan wheat and cattle in return for shipments of military goods.

As an agrarian nation that didn’t stand-out among its competitors, Bennet sought something that would give the Confederacy an edge over her neighbors. Thusly, Bennet began negotiating trade rights with the Kingdom of Hawaii. After several months of heated discussion, Bennet came out victorious. The Kingdom of Hawaii had agreed to become a semi-autonomous territory inside of the Confederacy, obliging the Kingdom to follow all laws set by the Dakotas, while giving it autonomy in regards to local affairs.

The Dakota Confederacy was now one of America’s main sources of sugarcane, and had control over a major refueling point on the Far East Trade Route. Thanks to all of this, the Dakota Confederacy was now a major agricultural powerhouse. Unfortunately, thanks to its economic prosperity, it became a target of something it was completely unprepared for, Sky Pirates.

On January 3rd, 1931, several days after the first sugarcane convoy entered Dakotan airspace, the Confederacy faced its first major pirate attack. On that date, a squadron of pirates attacked the convoy as it entered North Dakota from Canada. The squadron quickly downed the reconnaissance planes that acted as an early warning system for the airships, leaving the airships undefended, save for the crewmembers on board. Using Lee-Enfield rifles, the crews of the airship mounted a defense, killing several pirates before eventually capitulating.

Nearby wheat farmers, seeing the capture of the airship from below, organized a rescue attempt. Climbing into their Hawker Hart crop dusters, the farmers sped towards the pirate squadron, hoping to overcome the pirates using overwhelming numbers. Unfortunately, the farmers had inadequate ant-aircraft weaponry, and were easily dispatched by the pirates. However, the farmers sacrifice wasted much of the pirates’ precious fuel, forcing them to leave their prize and allowing the airship to finish the last leg of the journey to Bismarck. In memory of the farmers, Commissioner Bennet organized the best pilots in the Dakotas to form Confederacy’s first air force, the Dakotan Air Corp, best known for the elite Eleventh Squadron, also known as the “Crop Dusters”.

Unlike the agricultural sector, the industrial sector of the Dakota Confederacy is severely lacking. With industry almost entirely lacking (With the small amount of factories located in the eastern portions the Dakotas.), the Confederacy relies mostly on outside help for its industrial needs.

Military

Total Enlisted (Non-wartime): 100,000

Branches

Dakotan Air Corp (DAC): This military branch is in charge of defending shipping lanes from sky pirates. The DAC typically uses the Stearman Mk. II Stratofighter, but the more experimental Douglass Flying Wing can be seen in the skies above the Dakotas.

Autogyro Air Wing (AAW): This sub-branch operates under the DAC, but operates solely to defend airships. The autogyros (typically the N-4 “Centurion” Autogryo) and their pilots are loaded on to cargo airships, and then use the airships as base of operations.

Dakotan Maritime Corp (DMC): As a nation with relatively little water-borne possessions, the DMC simply operates to protect the Hawaiian Islands. The fleet is mostly made up of former pleasure yachts retrofitted with British made QF 2-pounder Mark VIII naval guns.

Dakotan Defense Force (DDF): The DDF is the branch of the Dakotan military based on the ground. In addition to the typical infantry, the DDF employs the Vickers Breda Mk. II, and Studebakers retrofitted with Swedish Nordenfelts.

List of Equipment

Dakotan Defense Force

Infantry Weapons:

P-14 Lee-Enfield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-14)
- The P41 is the standard bolt-action Dakotan rifle. It uses a special .303 British cartridge, and may be modified to work as a sniper rifle or grenade launcher.

Webley Mark V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webley_Revolver)
- The light-weight side arm of the Dakotan military. The Webley Mark V, using .445 Webley ammunition, has the greatest stopping power of any pistol employed in the United States.

Madsen Light Machine Gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madsen_machine_gun)
- The Madsen Light Machine Gun is the Confederacy’s Danish designed light machine gun. The Madsen has shown many problems during training sessions, such as jamming when firing blanks, leaving many skeptical about its ability to perform. However, during what little combat experience the gun has had in the Dakotas, it has performed exceptionally well.

Vehicles:

Vickers Breda Mk. II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:BredaPanzerI.jpg)
- The Breda, built using plans stolen from Germany in 1934, is a truly fearsome monster on the battlefield. With 15 mm of armor, it can withstand a fair amount of punishment from infantry, and, with its two top mounted flamethrowers, it can deal that punishment right back out.
