De Socialistisch Unie Republik van Saartie wishes to open the gates of its thus far diplomatic isolationism and offers to present several buildings located in Saartiestad as Diplomatic Embassies, full protection is offered in the form of the Rapier Wachtheren but we will allow nations to deploy their own security teams (see below) and we have the hopes that this will create a friendly appearance of Saartie.
Saartiestad
from the Saartian Factbook (in production)
Saartiestad is the central location of Saartian politics, economy, education and military, it houses the most recognised architecture in all of Saartie and has been torn to the ground and rebuilt during many disasters and military conquests, it is the oldest Saartian City having had a small Pastoralist society forming a farming village in the general location over 3000 years ago.
History:
Saartiestad was established as Saartiestad in the year 962AD by Alexander Saartie I to house the Crusading Knights of Saartie, the territory itself was purchased from the natives by the Abascalanian born Knight, the territory was very quickly built up from a farming town to make use of the nearby quarries, the Motte and Bailey being upgraded to a Stone Castle in 996AD (See Saartiestad Castle) the Town later became the spot of the Confederacy van Hertogen founded in 1116 which unified the territories of Ostend, Albrecht, Kediz and Sanders.
After the 1346 War of Saartie in which in the Duchal Confederacy was abolished by the recently crowned King Alexander Saartie III the City became a hub of activity having been declared the capitol of Saartie, during this time the City underwent a massive change in architecture known as the Kingdom Period, during this time the Cathedral (See St Albus Cathedral) was constructed and the people heavily converted from remaining Pagan beliefs to Christianity.
This rise in culture was reinforced by several advancements in science and technology, solidifying Saartiestad's place as the culture capitol of not only Saartie but the world, Artists and Writers flocked to the city, mostly during the 1600's which made Saartie a rather debatorial mecca, the University (See Saartiestad Unie) was founded by rich merchants and the Castle abandoned for a more modern center of goverment (See De Ridderhaus) and a more modern goverment system.
As the culture boom dwindled (during the end of the 1700's) Saartie refound its focus in engineering and industry becoming a place of smoke and steam, the nearby Iron Quarry providing a huge surplus in jobs producing famous Saartian Knives and the monumental Tower of Gallus (See Tower of Gallus) in the former center square recognising the former center of culture.
Recently Saartiestad came under much military aggression having been captured by SURS forces who changed little to the city and shortly therafter being taken by the Philans who caused much damage to the city, during the occupation many soup kitchens opened across the city creating a sort of counter culture movement which celebrated the history of Saartie.
Architecture:
Saartiestad Castle:
Saartiestad Castle was founded in 996 in order to defend against the rather barabaric nomads to the East, it also housed the Crusading Knights of Saartie prior to the construction of the Ridderhaus, in 1116 it became somewhat of a political center playing host to the regular meetings of the Five Dukes and the eventual preperation of Crusades before moving onwards to Sanders in the West.
The Castle was later semi demolished sometime in the 1600's oweing to its increasing uselessness, the Ridderhaus had removed its need for Duchal meetings, housing the King or planning Crusades, that and the decreasing need for crusades and the Saartie Oorlog 300 years previous had removed the competition of a Duchal system, the stone reclaimed from the Castle went into more needed projects such as the construction of Castles in the South to defend against the Philans.
During the 1800's the Castle was finally realised as a historical location and became the first building in Saartie to be recognised as a Historical Security Site protecting it from further modification or destruction, nowerdays it serves as a tourist site but has had some modification in restoration in order to stop further natural erosion.
De Ridderhaus:
The Ridderhaus was constructed in 1542 under the rule of King Derek Saartie I designing it to be the largest and most glorious palace in the world, when it was constructed it cost approximatly 70,000 Gulden (Modern; 14,000,000 USD) and caused much unrest in a time when the average citizen could barely afford a single roomed hovel.
Only two years later the Eastern wing of the main building was destroyed in a freak lightning storm, the land on which East Wing formerly stood was sold to a rich noble in order to make up for some of the costs of the Ridderhaus construction, the people criticised this decision saying that the whole building should be torn down, in order to release the pressure of a possible civil war the King allowed for an independent civil advisory board to be formed, the King felt it best to keep them close and so had an extension built to the rear allowing the mostly nobleman parliment to discuss matters of state importance.
During the Ondergang of Saartie in which Socialist support had risen up in distaste of the ruling form of goverment the Ridderhaus parliment was closed and all power directed under the King, the Ridderhaus was the first location to be assulted by the Socialists who continued in its use under the Socialistisch Unie Republik van Saartie.
When the Philans came and occupied the country the Ridderhaus became the center of the Federal Republik goverment but was restricted in size oweing to battle damage taken to the Rear Wing, after having removed the Phillans the building was repaired and still functions today.
St Albus Cathedral:
Originally intended to be constructed in the province of Albrecht who worship St Albus as a Patron Saint, unfortunantly Duke Marcus Albrecht XI was unable to provide the funds to purchase land and sold the construction materials accquired to Grand Duke Alexander Saartie II who decided to build the cathedral, but in Alexanders home city of Saartiestad, the project was not finished until 100 years later in 1372 under the newly crowned King of Saartie, Alexander III.
The Cathedral had a rudimentary Hospital and Learning center (not matched until the opening of Saartiestad Unie) which kept the largely pagan people both happy and slowly more accepting of Christianity, the Cathedral also temporarily became a home for the Crusading Knights of Saartie after they had been kicked out of the Castle by the King for suspected treason.
The Cathedral went somewhat into disrepair in the 1600's when the University opened granting people a far more open and liberated education, of course Education gave rise to somewhat heretical beliefs and the Cathedrals many attempts to stop this apparent heresy just prompted others to turn away from the Cathedral which eventually lost its tithe and closed its gates before being sold to the University in 1976.
Saartiestad Unie:
When Saartiestad became reknowned as a mecca for culture and free thought it prompted the arrival of the more richer Traders, Explorers and Merchants who bought into the educated phillosophy and began to fund a private project to construct a University near the edge of the City next to the newly constructed Ridderhaus.
When it opened in 1622 it became somewhat of a forum for debate, trading ethics and tales from foreign lands by Explorers, this was not education as such but it was a start, real progress did not begin until the library opened taking advantage of the Printing presses introduction amongst regular life which allowed for a far more orderly system of work prompting prospectus papers, textbooks and, a world first, personal examination.
Saartiestad Unie kept its title as a center of education and free thought right until modern days, if there is a new piece of technology from Saartie then in all likelyhood it came from Saartiestad Unie, both the SURS and the Falkons have taken a very supportive role in the Universities progress by funding it heavily and supporting scholarships to those too poor to afford education.
Tower of Gallus:
A Collossal construction built in the town center for the 1867 Saartiestad Engineering Fair, originally intended as a one off construction to be torn down at the end of the year it became quite popular amongst the locals who had their Town center moved further south, in 1877 a cafe was constructed on the 10th floor and the first light show began in 1911, there were fears of it being torn down in 1972 in order to lower the fears of economic depression from the Pig Iron shortage.
