HISTORY

When the breakup of the Union began in 1930, New York was one of the first to go. Believing that a split from the Dying Eagle would help bring about economic stability, the newly elected mayor of New York City, Antonio Andollinni, pleaded with the NYS Senate to secede from the United States. After several weeks of debates, they agreed to do so, and renamed New York City as the capital of their new nation.

The large Italian population of New York City took control of much of the new New York nation. In response to this, the ethnic arrangements began to shift. Northern and Western Europeans, such as the Irish and Germans, fled from the area, whilst Mediterranean descendants such as the Spanish and the Greeks stayed with their Italian cousins. Due to this, Antonio proposed that the new nation be renamed Nueve Italia, in honor of its people's heritage.

A majority of Southern and Eastern Europeans had also settled in New Jersey, and upon learning of the Nueve Italian nation, asked to join them. The official annexation of New Jersey into Nueve Italia occured in July of 1931, giving the new country complete control over New York Harbor, and thereby protecting its most crucial trade port.

By this time, Sky Piracy was running rampant in the United States, and the Mid-Atlantic region was hit as hard as any other. The new nation, now known as the Atlantic Republic of Nueve Italia, was struck badly as raids on New York City, Buffalo, Albany, Rochester, Trenton, Elizabeth, Atlantic City, and Newark became a daily occurence. The Atlantic Republic, so recently formed, was on the verge of being torn apart once more.

The New York State Senate, the governing body of the new nation, immediately formed a militia regiment to combat the pirates and restore order to the Atlantic Republic until a regular military force could be mustered. The New York Air Militia, known as the "Sons of Sicily", were immediately put into action and outfitted with the newest plane by a relatively (at that time) unknown manufacturer known as Gervasio Air Works.

The Militia got off to a rocky start, losing several engagements over the skies of New York City itself, but eventually several decent pilots joined the Squadron, along with instructors who fought in the Great War. These men and women, including famed privateer Ciro Aerinaio, turned the tides on the pirates, and struck back at their bases in Upstate New York, along the Great Lakes, and on the New Jersey Shoreline.

Seeing this display of power, the state of Connecticut immediately requested to become a part of the Atlantic Republic. Antonio Andollinni, who had been elected as Head Senator of the Republic, knew that such an annexation would secure the Eastern Atlantic Coast, and also provide a semi-buffer from the New England states, so he agreed, forming the boundaries that now exist in the Atlantic Republic of Nueve Italia.

After the victory over the pirates, New York City was renamed Nueve Italia City, and the country immediately got the ball rolling: industry skyrocketed to unprecedented levels due to the leadership of High Senator Andollinni, exports were up, imports were down (which was vital as a majority of Nueve Italia's income and prosperity is from trade), and the Colonial Breadbasket, blessed with good, fertile soil and the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes abundant with seafood, began to feed the new nation, with help from recent Agricultural Assistance Legislation passed by Antonio Andollinni.

Militarily, Nueve Italia benefitted from a large population, abundant natural resources, strategic placement in the United States, and one of the largest Commercial Trading Ports in the World (N.I.C.), supplying the nation with materials and manpower to create an Air Armada that could patrol the Atlantic Republic from the Ocean coastlines to the shores of the Great Lakes.

In terms of Industry, the addition of Connecticut was a major step forward, as one of its major industrial outputs is transportation equipment, including aircraft parts, heavy industrial machinery and electrical equipment. New Jersey is absolutely infamous for the number of oil refineries in the state, but these same refineries provide cheap fuel for the people and military of the Atlantic Republic, not to mention the fact that New Jersey is also a major agricultural producer. Finally, New York in itself is an economic diety: aside from Tourism, the state is a huge agricultural producer and exporter, and leads the divided nation in the industrial output of printing and publishing, scientific instruments, electric equipment, machinery, and chemical products. New York also is a leading exporter of foodstuffs, commodities, minerals, manufactured goods, cut diamonds, and aircraft parts, not to mention a Cultural and Economic center for banking, finance, and communications. All of these things combined make for a powerhouse economically, and economic power translates directly into politcal and military power.

Though the Atlantic Republic is relatively new (the official annexation of Connecticut being near the end of 1932), no one can doubt its up-and-coming power. Whether through peaceful trading as a neutral bystander or long-term ally, or locked in battle with the Power that stretches from Lake Erie to the Atlantic ocean, many of the other new nations find the Atlantic Republic to be, if nothing else, intriguing.

MILITARY

Total Enlisted Personnel (Non-Wartime): 366,260 People

Branches:

Aviazione Repubblica: Nitalian Air Force

Esercito Repubblica: Nitalian Army

Marina Repubblica: Nitalian Navy

Separation of Power:

The Aviazione Repubblica controls all of the lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air craft in use by the Atlantic Republic. This means that there are no Ground or Naval Fighter Squadrons, although the Aviazione Repubblica will frequently "lend" squadrons to the Esercito or Marina for Air Support.

Likewise, the Esercito Repubblica has total control over all ground forces, including infantry, vehicles (including tanks, half-tracks, transports, and military trains), artillery, and all ground defenses (such as Flak Towers or Shore Batteries).

Lastly, the Marina Repubblica controls all Nitalian water vessels, from transports to Battleships that operate within the Great Lakes and all 7 oceans.

Esercito Repubblica

Infantry Weapons:

The R-3 Collera Bolt-Action Rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcano)
- The Collera is the basic bolt-action rifle currently in service with the Nitalian Army. It's unusual cartridge (6.5 x 52mm and 7.35 x 51mm) make it a truly Nitalian-specific weapon. It can be fitted with a bayonet attachment for CQC, and a telescopic sight for increased accuracy at long range. It is available in the rifle version and also the compact, carbine version, which is frequently used by the Air Force and Navy.

The SM-21 Spazzada Sub-Machine Gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thompson_submachine_gun)
- The SM-21 is a .45 ACP-spewing weapon that is slowly becoming a main-stay of the Esercito due to its incredible rate of fire and pure stopping-power. The name Spazzada is actually a contraction of the phrase spazzatore di strada, literally translating to "Street Sweeper". Indeed, the SM-21 has found its way into criminal elements, as well as the officers of the law who try and stay one step ahead of the gangs. Smaller than the R-3 and far more powerful, the SM-21 is actually in service with all branches of the Nitalian military, and is frequently seen within naval vessels, onboard airships, and even carried by pilots in secret compartments in their planes.
