Cazelian Border

At 3:00 AM on June 22, 2030, it happened. The commanders of the armed forces in Vetalia sent word to the units in the field that they were authorized to begin movement across the Cazelian border with the intent of defeating and occupying the remaining portions of the country. A blitzkrieg offensive from Cazia would rush towards the capitol, attempting to knock out remaining resistance and cripple the country's leadership.

At 3:05 AM, all 14,700 AS 90 Braveheart Self-Propelled Artillery Pieces in the invasion force began opening fire at all known Cazelian military and economic sites within 30 kilometers of the front line, which stretched roughly 200 kilometers from the coast to a position directly south of Caze City.

At 3:16 AM, 3,060 combat aircraft from the Southern Naval Command carriers based off of the coast took off on a search-and-destroy trajectory that

would bring them up to the defenses of Caze City with orders to destroy any potential hostile targets in the area around the capitol.

At 3:29 AM, six of the seven armies of the Vetalian forces positioned on the border were ordered to move out under the cover of artillery fire. The 4th Army, comprised entirely of infantry and defensive equipment would stay behind to protect Cazia and aid the Vetalian Occupation Force in defending the border. 6.4 million troops crossed the border and began moving towards Caze City at a rate of 5 miles per hour. Units of the Vetalian Air Force were on hand to protect them as well, but were ordered to remain at their bases until needed.

At 3:40 AM, a communique was dispatched to the Cazelias offering immediate peace negotiations in exchange for the surrender of all hostile forces and the withdrawal of any and all foreign forces aiding their defense. All forces were ordered to continue their advance until the high command received word of Cazelian surrender.

Reconnaissance reports showed that the Cazelians had fortified themselves and were primarily infantry based in the areas around the city, and so the high command decided to keep the armor in front and follow up with infantry. Artillery and aircraft would focus on aerial bombardment to soften up defenses while the mechanized units dealt with organized resistance. The infantry would have the dangerous task of street-to-street fighting.

Within a few hours, the Vetalian artillery were within range of Caze City and began to deploy for firing. The first wave of 14,700 shells from the mobile artillery were targeted at the city and fired at the units entrenched around the city. Since there was some concern about enemy naval units interfering with the air forces deployed from Southern Naval command, the planes were temporarily pulled back and the attack would rely primarily on ground based artillery.

The armor and mechanized infantry pressed forward towards Caze City while the infantry approached behind them in their URAL transports. Based on the rate of advance, the capitol would be under attack within a few hours. The first units to arrive would be the 30 armored divisions of the 2nd Army, led by the elite 39th Armored Division.

The Dunerian forces en route to Cazelia were not unnoticed. The planes that had been called back to their ships took off and patrolled the skies, while the artillery closely watched for their advance. Mobile anti-aircraft systems were also engaged to aid the planes in the defense of Vetalian forces moving in to Cazelia.

Once the Dunerians were within range, they would come under fire from over 14,000 artillery units while the planes would work to destroy enemy air support and strafe ground units. Although their commitment was far from minor, their forces were outnumbered almost 7 to 1 on the ground and even more in the air and sea.

OOC: Duneria, check the new OOC thread. It's updated there.

IC:

The Vetalian Southern Naval Command fleet, some 3,500 ships strong, had arranged itself in combat formation prior to the invasion. The area around them was constantly monitored for enemy ships approaching, and the Neustrashimy ASW and Overlord AA cruisers held the outermost positions, ready to attack any planes or submarines that came within range of their radar. Behind them stood the Sovremenny, Indomitable, and Slava missile cruisers, while groups of heavier cruisers and battleships held closest to the carriers. The 360 Amur 1850 submarines, organized in to groups of 10 each, moved in to positions at the extreme ends of the fleet in order to flank enemy attackers and strike at the slower battleships. The superdreadnoughts and heavy battleships, the command core of the fleet, stood at the very center with their powerful guns ready to unleash hell on anything that came too close.

The carrier based aircraft held position, patrolling over the Vetalian troops as they pushed deeper in to Cazelia and watching the approaching Dunerians closely. Whether on land or on sea, the Dunerians were severely outnumbered and outgunned, but it was hard not to be impressed by their dedication to their nation and their allies in the face of terrible odds. It would be a valiant fight on both sides.

Dropped behind the cover of night, Dunerian Red Hand elites crept foward Vetalian position's. It had been easy to take care of the four outpost's near Caze' city, this however was going to be interesting. Before them was a Vatalian Arms Depot. Taking it out meant, major shortages of ammo for Duneria's enemies.

Already the enemy knew the hard-to-ignore fact of Dunerian resilency. Even though they were "Outgunned" and "Outmanned", Dunerian forces were pushing back forces much greater than their own. Dunerian Mig's had clashed with Vatalian fighter's and there was a clear stalemate in the sky.
What was even more interesting was the formation of two front's.
On one front was the Vatalian advance into Cazelian territory, and on the other front, was skirmishes with Dunerian forces.

However, more suprises were yet to come for both sides.

OOC: It's Vetalia. With a Ve. ;)
OOC2: Also, please don't RP my losses. You haven't taken out any depots yet because we haven't RPed you doing so.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The situation in the air was hardly optimal due to the relative parity of the two air forces, so to aid the swift resolution of the conflict the AA missile cruisers began unloading their weaponry in to the skies. Hundreds of guided missiles and unguided flak fire began emptying in to the enemy aircraft while the Vetalian aircraft regrouped and unloaded their own salvos against enemy planes in a simultaneous strike. Some 300 ground-based and 3,000 ATA missiles from the MiG and Berkut fighters screamed towards the enemy planes while flak fire unloaded on them from behind, attempting to cut off retreat.

The Vetalian forces had already lost roughly 300 aircraft in the engagement with the Dunerians but still had a massive amount of firepower on reserve. With 3,300 missiles en route and thousands more on tap, the firepower would keep coming until the aerial assault was resolved.

Vetalian Arms Depot 322, Cazia

It was quiet at the arms depot, which had been mostly emptied now that the troops were on the march. It mostly held equipment for the Occupation Force and a large shipment of damaged and broken AK-74U rifles for repair and refitting. Like most depots, it held a platoon of 40 VOF infantry equipped with standard weaponry and was guarded by watchtowers and security fencing. The depots themselves were heavily locked and kept under constant watch, while spotlights illuminated the base

Most of the men were dismissed and were idly listening to the radio or playing cards, while 20 of them were on patrol around the facility or stationed behind the machine guns and spotlights in the watchtowers.

The Mig's fled on cue, seeing the Vetalian fighter's trailing them. From the Scrub's, Dunerian soldier's fired hundred's of Stinger's towards the enemy planes. Behind the salvo, fresh Mig's arrived to reinforce the old ones.

Meanwhile..............................

Stein, leader of the Red Hand squads, opened his intercom.
"Darsham, Flash get down here!" he ordered.
The two soldier's brought a duffle bag toward's the other men.
Stein opened the bag. Dozen's of RPG's lay within the canvas.
Taking them out, Stein and his men holstered their SMG's and chainsword's, and pointed the RPG's toward the towers and gun emplacement's.
"what do we do know sir?" questioned a soldier.
"We attack."
Stein pulled the trigger, and other Red Hand's around the base fired a salvo at the designated target's.

OOC: How many of your planes did I shoot down?

Incoming enemy missiles were partially intercepted by the ships below, but they still managed to take out another 59 planes. The Vetalian planes regrouped again, coming in for another attack against the fresh reinforcements, while ground forces redoubled their fire against the enemy. Another salvo of missiles, 4,300 in total, were unloaded on the enemy planes from every AA cruiser and plane in the fleet.

Meanwhile, the ASW cruisers began to move out along with the Amur 1850 subs, ready to destroy the enemy ships under the cover of heavy cruiser and battleship fire.

Depot 322

The guards didn't even hear the missiles coming until it was too late, only to see two watchtowers explode, killing 12 guards, while other missiles destroyed outbuildings and other parts of the depot. Flames and smoke arced in to the sky as the fires spread amidst the loud explosions.

Alarms ringing, the Sergeant in command sent a frenzied call to Cazia for reinforcements while the remaining troops hurried to prepare for combat. Donning night-vision and infrared scanning lenses, the Sergeant had the lights turned off...the Vetalian troops, clad in dark grey, would be nearly invisible to anyone unequipped with excellent night-vision capabilities. The light from burning watchtowers and equipment cast an eerie glow as the squads of infantry melted in to the darkness to hunt their attackers.

"Switch to Heat Vision, and someone call up MI-28 support!" Stein commanded.
The Red Hand's display turned to an erie blue, as they saw heat pattern's coming at them.

Smiling, Stein and his forces cocked their gun's and thumbed their Chainswords.
This was going to be interesting.

30 km from Caze City

The advance units of the 2nd army were now only 30 km from Caze City, close enough for the artillery, currently engaging Dunerian forces to the north, to unload a huge salvo on the city and its defenses. They held their position for the moment as infantry and artillery began to move in to place behind them. Once this was done, they would begin moving closer to the city, ideally drawing the Dunerians in to the spearhead of the invasion force. For now, they were far enough away not to be a concern, at least on the ground.

Behind Vetalian Lines

"Sir, we've got reports of a C-130 behind our lines, not too far from one of the 4th Army's FOBs."
"Yeah, and? I think we have bigger issues than a single plane, like that damn depot under attack right outside Cazia."
"Yeah, but...I don't have any logs of a flight scheduled near that position."
"What? This could be bad. Send a battalion of 4th Army troops with APCs and fighting vehicles to check the area out. That should stop any problem in its tracks."
"Yes sir."

With that order, 300 infantry from the 4th Army set out towards the base to supplement the soldiers guarding the facility and shore up its defenses in the event of an attack.

OOC: Duneria, I've got 3,060, now 2,699.

The battle formations continued off the coast, as the air and naval forces continued to pound at any enemy planes left with STA/ATA missiles and flak fire. They were not ordered to pursue outside of the fleet's position for fear of removing key air support in the face of continued Cazelian resistance. Dunerian forces were still a good distance away and could be dealt with when they were closer in range.

At the Depot

Chainswords, while a grisly and powerful weapon, were still noisy, and it would not escape the men from the base trying to hold out as long as possible until reinforcements arrived. The dead man had provided a key asset in helping reveal their position, although it was little help when the garrison had no idea what kind of forces they were up against.

"How long till those reinforcements get here?"
"Lieutenant said 20 minutes, tops, Sarge."
"Fuck...that means just us for now. We've only got a platoon of regular infantry against SpecOps. Goddamn, I thought this would be easy."
"Yeah, me t-...hold on, did you hear that?" The Corporal switched on thermal vision and could see, vaguely, movement in the distance and the sound of guns and something else.
"I see something out there. Can't be ours because they're too few in number and aren't signaling."
"Great...Corporal, tell the other two squads to regroup with us and send the last one with the PP-19s out to check that disturbance. We'll flank 'em and try and drive them towards us."
"Yes sir."

The other two squads moved towards the Sergeant and his squad while the last one moved towards the disturbance. They watched the six men move out towards the enemy cautiously while they took aim with their AK-74s, Saiga-12 shotguns, three SV-98 sniper rifles and one KPV heavy machine gun. The second they heard fire, they'd unload on the enemy targets.

The APCs continued to patrol the area but none of the troops noticed the Ghosts moving in the distance. A squad of Ka-50 attack helicopters left for Depot 322 to aid the ground forces against their enemy attackers, while another squad scouted the area around the APCs for signs of enemy movement.

30km outside of Caze City

"FIRE!" The artillery unloaded their first salvo of fire on Caze City in a deafening enfilade that was audible as far south as Kaztania. 14,700 shells aimed at the trenches and defenses around the city rained down towards the defenders while the armor began to move forward again. The salvos would continue until the 2nd and 5th armies were within a mile of the capitol. The 3rd army took a position along the artillery, prepared to defend against potential counterattack from the Dunerian forces.

He stopped, then slammed his fist on the wall. "THIS MUST NOT BE ALLOWED!" A few people flinched, others ignored it, and others simply smirked. The 3rd army took a position along the artillery, prepared to defend against potential counterattack from the Dunerian forces.

the shells rained down on the outer defenses, but due to Cazelian ingenuety, the marines had dug decoy trenches filled with explosives, witch tunneled underground about 4 miles in fron of the enemy artillery. as soon as the sheels hit, the sun was blotted out by the dirt flung into the air.
the Cazelians then retaliated with surface to surface missiles and artillery, but it was very innacuratw, since their targeting satilittes were unable to see due to the dirt that was flung out into the cloud level. the bombardment was to pin the enemy forces and hold them out as long as possible...

the Ghosts were firmly in position around the FOB now, and needed to wait for the enemy to fall off guard, lulling them into a false sense of security. they waited one hour before they made thier attack, qietly moving past the guards, then they planted their charges and melting back into the darkness.
one hour later, the charges detonated...
Vetalia
09-08-2007, 02:43
The Vetalian artillery crews were trained well and could recognize the explosions as detonated explosives and not destroyed equipment. Upon confirmation from the high command, they returned to mobile form and advanced closer towards the city. However, it also made the advancing armor unable to see many missiles, and it caused serious damage to the 2nd army, knocking five divisions temporarily out of combat and killing at least 1,500 soldiers in addition to crippling several hundred tanks and wounding thousands more.

However, the artillery were soon in place again and began bombarding the city proper with a second round of explosives. The enemy explosives severely damaged the main roads, slowing the advance of trucks and light vehicles, but the tanks and URAL transports were designed for off-road and rough conditions and did not slow the advance appreciably. The troops were cautious, however, and sent out reconnaissance vehicles to scout for additional caches of explosives.

Another round of 15,000 shells were unloaded, this time aimed for the city proper. It would ideally cause massive damage to the capitol and slow or destroy any enemy forces in the city, reducing their ability to use the city for defense and keeping them in the open.

1st Army FOB

The patrols had found nothing, but the 300 additional troops were not removed having been ordered to hold their position until daybreak. However, as a precaution, they remained spread out to avoid a potential attack by explosives or RPGs.

An hour later, the charges exploding, crippling the base and disrupting radio and satellite communications with the 1st army for several hours. 75 soldiers were also wounded, but since the majority had taken positions around the base rather than in it, the main damage was to the actual facility.
Steel and Fire
09-08-2007, 03:13
Pacifica was a lovely glacial island slightly off the continental coast. It consisted of a mountainous plateau which sloped away sharply on all sides down to the sea; trackless virgin forests and the summer homes of Steelian wealthy occupied that plateau, including at least one small town complete with post office, general store, and several other amenities. From springs on the island, streams poured down its sides in high waterfalls; whereas on its mountainous slopes roamed all kinds of wild and endangered animals.

It was, of course, a massive concealed military base. The unfortunates who lived on it would soon find that out to their peril; they had been placed there merely as decoys. From inside huge caves on the northern coast, the island had been literally hollowed out; within resided thousands of military personnel, as well as a small submarine force and the hangars for hundreds of advanced fighter planes.

The first hints that Pacifica was not what it seemed were far from subtle: a stretch of forest abruptly fell in to reveal a large airfield—large enough to launch five fighter planes at once. Within minutes a massive number of aircraft of all types had lifted off from the hitherto concealed airfield; within hours, those aircraft—including at least a hundred large transport planes—were depositing the 33rd Rough and Ready on the Dunerian border.

A word of explanation here. The 33rd Rough and Ready, named for Teddy Roosevelt, is a full Battalion including infantry, armoured, and aerial elements. (As a Battalion, it is expected to be the smallest and most versatile complete unit around.) Consisting of no fewer than a hundred and fifty thousand men, along with three thousand tanks and a wide variety of artillery, over two hundred air superiority fighters and at least three hundred strike fighters, the 33rd was a respectable force on its own; but a second force of similar size, the 27th Spearheads, was en route to back it up in case it really needed it. The 33rd was also backed up by the 141st Strategic Bomber Wing, operating out of Pacifica itself, which meant: lots of shiny explosions for the Dunerians to chew on.

The first thing the Dunerians would notice would be a particularly low-flying civilian plane. Out of its cargo bay dropped an object; it was dropped in an area close enough to the capital, but far enough away that no-one would be hurt. It was a massive sign, reading in huge letters:
Just so you know, you are at war with the Republic of Steel and Fire as of now. Thank you; we hope you have a nice day. -- The Triumvirate

Four minutes and thirty-six seconds later, seventy-two B-133 Strategic Bombers, on a loop in from Pacifica, hit 200km range and launched the fifty AGM-38 missiles each one carried. Thirty-six hundred vehicles of high explosive destruction careened at supersonic velocities (and growing) towards virtually all military bases in northern Duneria. Targets included harbours, airfields (both military and civilian), and anything that looked like it could possibly be a military base. By the time the Dunerians could retaliate, the bombers were on their way back to Pacifica, and land-based SSM-71V missile launchers were powering up, each one with enough range to strike targets deep within Duneria itself.

A little under an hour later the 33rd was hitting the Dunerian border with full firepower, the air support seeking out targets and relaying information about the surroundings while the men and vehicles cussed and snarled their way through thick forests en route to their destination: War.

Whatever else one might say about Steel and Fire, one must admit that they don't do things by halves.

Troops were trained, men were brought, planes were readied, pilots prepped, engines fed with fuel. C-47's were packed with troops, Chinooks were back with light vehicles, Hercules were being loaded with tanks, hundred upon hundreds of MiG-29's were being geared up to be a practical metal blanket against any sort of missiles that headed towards the convoy. Troops were trained efficiently, not the best, not the worst.

Now it began, the airel Armada began it's flight over its continent to face it's enemy, Cazelia, taking and fortifying the towns of Kaztania, New Riverport and Orlock. Their they would create a military triad of quickly made barracks and defenses. An underground system would be constructed, reinforcements and ammunition with supplies would be flown in, logistics had been prepped, readied, and waiting.

Cazia

It was a pleasantly warm morning in Cazia, and the Praetor was taking the opportunity to have lunch on the palace veranda with his Executive Consul, the head of the bureaucracy in Vetalian Cazelia. The streets were busy, filled with people and cars...even if their compatriots across the border were at war, the Cazelians in the region still needed to feed their families and keep the economy going. A Vetalian waiter came in, bearing a light breakfast and a pot of tea, and set it down at the wrought iron and glass table where the two men were sitting.

"Sir, it appears that our allies have moved out against the Cazelians and their Dunerian help. Our forces are now closing in on all sides and we feel it won't be long before they completely capitulate. Shall I send word to the Praetor? He wants to take a tour of Caze City once we capture it."

"Of course. I imagine he will be pleased to hear this turn of events has occurred so quickly...although those terrorist attacks might be a bit of a problem." The Viceroyal Praetor was in a sublime mood, lifted by success on the front lines and political victory back home as the people lauded him as one of the heroes of the war in Cazelia.

"I'm not concerned. We'll be taking care of that situation soon enough. The General Government has been given the power necessary to deal with any kind of insurgency, and we will push that power to its limit. I doubt the rebels will keep fighting when we have their families rebuilding the things they destroy..."

Fortunately, Dunerian Forces were alerted by radar, and managed to get into underground bunker's before the missiles landed. Only a few hundred soldier's were cought in the crossfire.
When the survivor's emerged from their shelter's it was not fear that was in their eyes.
Rather, [I]hate.[I]
Dunerian commander's initiated Objective zero. On that command, Duneria was transformed into a warrior nation.
Million's of soldier's dug into position's around the land, SAM system's emerged from the ground, Airplanes were launched to intercept all target's above the ground, and ordinary citizen's manned machinegun's or AA system's.
From several lab's across the country came the Warrior/2 Mech's. Primitive, lightly armored, and slow but deadly adddition's to Duneria's army.

Steel and Fire troop's emerged out of the forest.
And met death.

First, three airborne divisions had been dropped at Kaztania, along with a single armored division, plus other light vehicles. They rushed the city, quickly overwhelming any police forces that were station their, quickly fortifying it and putting the citizens of the town to work, building defenses and the like. Then New Riverport, it would be an reserve section, and thus one airborne division had been dropped, along with an independent brigade of engineers to set up work on barracks and last-ditch defenses. Lastly, Orlock, the remainder of the troops, four airborne divisions, two armored divisions, two independent engineering brigades, along with a large array of light vehicles, APCs and IFVs.

+-+

Lance Corporal James Texton, 19th Airborne Division, he had been dropped off at Kaztania, clearing the city was no problem, but his commander and immeditately put him to work on creating a massive trench line connecting from Kaztania to Orlock. The work was grueling, demeaning, something he had joined to get away from. But it was his duty, and he knew that these trenches could save many lives.

Seeing Dunerian forces mobilize towards the advancing Steel and Fire troops, the Vetalian navy began to unload fire on their positions. Thousands of missiles and long-range shell fire began to pound every Dunerian military target within range while the 2,900 planes still left in the carrier force took off to unload their own strikes on the enemy.

A total of 1,500 STS cruise missiles, 900 high-yield explosive shells, and untold thousands of rounds of gunfire laid in to the Dunerians with savage force in the span of three minutes. They would continue firing until on-board supplies of ammunition, which totaled in the hundreds of thousands of shells and tens of thousands of missiles, were exhausted and the ships would have to be resupplied at the port of Orlock prior to returning to the fray.

Dunerian Forces once again fled to the safety of their bunker's. Built into their position's, the bunker's helped shelter the forces of Duneria against missiles and other projectiles, whilst still being able to fire upon the Enemy. The Steel and Fire forces found this fact most painful.

Meanwhile............

More than 1000 Red hand operative's swam beneath Vetalian ship's. Concentrating on blowing up Dunerian Battle formation's, They didn't notice the Troop formation coming at them from under the sea.

The Red Hands carefully placed charges on dozen's of enemy ships.
Swimming away, the Red Hand's thumbed the activation button.
And watched their handiwork.

OOC: Bunkers couldn't protect against missiles and shells. They'd bust through and destroy at least some of them, and shells will tear a gigantic hole in anything built in the blast radius.

OOC: Also, that naval attack is not possible. We have advanced radar, sonar and infrared scanning capable of detecting any ships, vehicles, aircraft and personnel approaching, and our submarines are crawling the waters around on the extreme edge of our fleet a good distance from the heavy battleships, carriers, and heavy cruisers. You'd have to not only sneak past several hundred Amur 1850 submarines equipped with advanced sonar and radar detection but also the ASW cruisers, helicopters, light cruisers, and everything else in the fleet specifically designed to monitor the waters in order to even approach the ships bombarding your coast.

You have to RP them trying to approach the ships before even trying to blow them up. An undetected 1,000 ship attack is impossible even against a 19th-century fleet of wooden battleships. They'd be slaughtered before they were a mile from the submarines, let alone the rest of the fleet.

IC: 2,000 Cruise missiles launched from Dunerian silo's. Their mission, cause as much damage to Vetalian ship's as possible, an additional 500 scatterbang missiles were launched from Dunerian submarines near the coast (pretty far away from your guy's).
Artillery near the Steel and Fire forces started to fire thousand's of round's at the enemy position's and Dunerian aircraft airstriked enemy forces with napalm.
Meanwhile....

1000 Red hand operative's swam toward's the naval column. armed with charges and miniature torpedoes.

::: Somewhere in North Duneria :::

"THEY'RE DRIVING US BACK! GET BEHIND THE BARRICADES, GIVE THOSE BASTARDS ALL YOU GOT! MOW THEM DOWN!"

The 1789th Company of the 33rd Battalion was in rather dire straits. Forced down from a hill, they were under attack by what seemed like thousands (although were probably mere hundreds) of enemy soldiers. To be more specific, the 1789th Company had been reduced to Staff Sergeant Martin O'Brien and about twenty-five remaining men from the Company's three squads, all of their officers slain.

O'Brien fell silent briefly as he realised that further yelling was unnecessary. Crouching behind piles of sandbags, dead bodies and anything else that came to hand, the 1789th was giving as good as it got; rifle and machinegun fire was exchanged, and on all sides but behind him O'Brien heard the screams and moans of the dead and wounded. He was surprised by the ferocity of the Dunerian assault; evidently they had been preparing for war for quite some time.

Between yelling orders, O'Brien was talking into his radio; the result sounded something like "KEEP GIVIN' EM WHAT FOR, YOU WORTHLESS CLODS-- Captain, I need your armoured support, where are those clusters-- MEDIC, ANYONE GOT A MEDIC? --We're stuck, sir.... can't move forwards, too many of the bastards, and can't move back 'cause there are too many behind us-- AIM FOR THE HEAD, THOSE MECHS AIN'T PERFECT YET!--"

Around O'Brien's tenacious position were thousands more Steelian troops, forming a rough line in the thinning forest; even more were ranged with more powerful weapons on the high ground within the forest itself, machineguns and sniper rifles chattering away. Rumbling along the ground came tanks and APCs; field guns had been set up within range as well, and self-propelled guns were moving closer by the minute. Every now and then one might hear the explosion of an ATGM; but the whistles of shells falling from the sky was omnipresent, as cluster munitions were used to wipe out entire companies at a blow and enemy armour and artillery were targeted before they could enter the melée.

O'Brien took stock of the situation between orders. 1789th had been one of the hardest hit; most companies in the vanguard had lost far fewer men, and those in the rearguard and middle had yet to see combat. An earth-shaking explosion behind him told him that another company had suffered a hard hit; and the sounds of a fusillade of shells blowing themselves to bits in front of him indicated retribution.

In the air, the battle was no less fierce. The air superiority fighters carried eight medium-range air-to-air missiles apiece; hundreds of these at a time were used to target enemy fighters as the two air groups approached each other at supersonic speeds. It was a matter of minutes, perhaps even seconds, before the inevitable furball began. Meanwhile, the majority of strike fighters were ranging over enemy territory, targeting SAM sites, ground-based radar installations, and anything else they chose to.

Elsewhere along the line, the 33rd was beginning to push deeper into Dunerian territory, meeting stiff resistance with its own discipline and equipment; after all, the Dunerians had been caught by surprise, and many of the troops to be deployed to the northern border could not have arrived yet. Not that the Steelians were looking forward to that part, of course; then again, they had plenty of artillery and plenty of air support, at least for the time being.

::: Pacifica :::

Pacifica was built to defend itself against large fleets. Being far from Steel and Fire proper, and not hosting harbours deep enough to hold a large fleet, it could not fight ships with ships; instead it fought them with missiles. The land-based missile batteries were buried deep underground. The launchers extended through the beaches and the sea itself; invisible until they were used. And at this point, they would not be used. The attack would come from somewhere else on the island.

Along the seaward sides of the island were guns. Big guns; 25"/L62 guns, the kind they put on superdreadnaughts. There were also smaller, 12" guns; and while there were even smaller artillery ranging from 3" to 6", most of that had been deployed to Duneria with the 33rd. Today it is only the 25" guns that concern us. Buried underground, they began to rise to the surface, like primeval monsters surfacing out of the deeps. They faced the sea, for now. But slowly, agonisingly slowly, they turned.

Sixty guns, each one now facing Duneria. And as one, they fired. Rocket-assisted shells screamed above Pacifica and the gulf in between, and struck down on solid ground. Aimed carefully away from the Steelian advance to avoid friendly fire, they targeted missile silos, bunkers, bridges, power stations, ports, airfields; infrastructure in general, along with any military infrastructure that survived. The aim was to avoid civilian casualties while doing maximum damage to the nation, although if the Steelians had known about "Objective Zero" they wouldn't have bothered.

Back on Pacifica, another shell clacked into the breech.

The bombardment would continue like this for the rest of the day.
Vetalia
09-08-2007, 04:22
The missiles screamed towards the fleet but were detected on the fleet's radar systems and all available air defenses were mobilized towards the incoming fire. The majority of the cruise missiles and scatterbangs were intercepted with no damage, but one of the problems of MIRV warheads was that they could still cause collateral damage even if intercepted. 155 ships, mostly cruisers and destroyers on the edges of the fleet, were either sunk or put out of commission while another 240 suffered various degrees of damage. It was a devastating strike even if the majority of the fire was countered. Nonetheless, the bombardment continued apace, and another salvo of 1,500 missiles and 1,400 cannon shells screamed towards the coast, targeting anything of potential military value.

The seas were choppy from the battle but it did not stop the submarines and Neustrashimy cruisers from noticing the enemy targets moving towards the fleet. They relayed messages to the rest of the fleet, and within minutes a swarm of 300 Ka-27 and Mi-8 helicopters were en route to the site to begin picking them off. Once in range, they began unloading thousands of rounds of bullets, light rockets, and small arms fire from troops in the copters at the men trying to swim towards the fleet.

The ships further back also helped, targeting light cannon fire and thousands of rounds from their deck guns on the special forces swimming towards the fleet. Over 1,000,000 rounds per minute of fire and several hundred rockets and shells from the fleet were concentrated on the troops swimming towards the fleet.

Seeing the invasion into Cazelia, President Kilo has officially ordered a full military mobilization. The small forces around Cazelia have been ordered to prepare for conflict, while there has been orders passed down for 50 large transport ships to launch towards Cazelia - their goal is simple: to evacuate civilians and the government from Cazelia.

While no public word has been made, soon President Kilo would be issuing a stern warning to Vetalia and her allies.

Hello good ally,

We are aware of the situation currently arising in Cazelia, and we note that this is to close to you for comfort. We would like to organize with you, as well as Duneria, should this situation spill to far outside the border of Cazelia.

Seeing that Vetalia has some allies in this war, and seeing their recent turn towards aggression and imperialism, we are worried they will attempt to move on elsewhere should their Cazelian campaign be a success. We also ask that you assist us in the emergency evacuation of Cazelian civilians and their government to safeguard their future.

ViZion has begun an immediate mobilization, knowing that Vetalia and her allies are turning very imperialistic, and our recent decline in friendship with them being a bit of a worry to us. We highly suggest you follow suit for your protection.

Thank you, and let us form an alliance with other nations in and around the America's for all of our protection, begining with Duneria. We are also contacting Aztec National League - a long time ally of ours - with the same request.

Thank you,

President Kilo

Hello,

We see that you have entered the conflict on behalf of Cazelia. We thank you, as the actions taken by the imperialistic nation of Vetalia and her allies cannot go unpunished. At this time, ViZion is mobilizing. We have also ordered 50 large transport ships to head to Cazelia to begin the emergency evacuation of Cazelian civilians. If the war spills into your land, we are also willing to do the same for your people.

I regret to say that we do not a large enough force in the area to have a large, widespread impact. However, the forces we will have will be landing and heading straight for the Cazelian capital to help protect it, and their government. We are particularly concerned with the young Ingram, son of their President, and someone we view as extremely vital to their nations future - rather he becomes President or not at some point, he is very much a rally figure, someone all Cazelians can look to for inspiration and will to fight back and live on.

We also request that you allow us to use your nation as a staging point for our forces to enter Cazelia. Along with that, we are looking to form an alliance with nations across the America's for protection against this clear imperialism. The Lone Alliance and the Aztec National League are both long-time allies of ViZion's, and they are being contacted about this as well. Mondoth would be another nation which we need to contact as well.

We also wish to contact you about two other related things. For one, we would like to ask that you allow us to setup a rally point for our forces heading to Cazelia, and that you assist us in the evacuation of Cazelian civilians.

The second is that we wish to form an alliance with nations across America. We feel this is a must for the protection of nations across the America's from this imperialism going wild. We have contacted Duneria and The Lone Alliance about this, and will also be contacting Mondoth as well.

Hello,

It has been a long time since our nations have had any sort of contact. I believe the last time we had relationships, we were dubbed a 'Responsible Nation' by you.

I wish to come to you about the recent events in Cazelia. This concerns us gravely. Vetalia and her allies seem hell-bent on taking more land at whatever cost necessary. We feel this will put all of the America's in danger. We also fear that this could spread elsewhere - the ViZo-Veta relations have taken a steep decline, and we feel this may be a momentum gainer for a strike against us, among other nations.

As such, we have contacted The Lone Alliance, Duneria, and the Aztec National League with the following request. We wish to form an alliance with all nations in the America's for protection against this recent spur of imperialism. We deem this a very important and needed step to preserve peace outside Cazelia.

Aztec National League

3:20 AM, Tenochitilán (Mexico City),

A three car light rail train drove down the meridian of one of the major streets of the large, modern metropolis of Tenochitilán. A passenger who was returning to her home after a long graveyard shift looked out the window, looking over the city she had lived in for a long time. Not too far off in the distance was the yellow glow of lights illuminating the exterior walls of the old Grand Union Chambers – although formerly the permanent (and very rarely, still occasional) meeting place for all three houses of the nation’s legislature, this building had largely been taken over by the administrative branch of government. The building stood out, like a candle in a void of darkness in the late hour…Everybody knew that something major was about to take place.

The Tlatoani of the Aztec National League, Quetzalcoatl Nochtli, was by now an very experienced leader. This experience told him that he was entering déjà vu all over again – he and the nation had been down this path before. Exhausted, Quetzalcoatl put his hand on his forehead, wishing he was still in bed, next to his wife. Quickly, he snapped out of his state and asked “What has been the response from our circle?”

Circle was a code-word for “allies” – or more specifically in this case, ViZion. Dr. Darius Wellington, the cockney medical doctor-turned-politician stated, “We received a top classified communiqué from ViZion only a few hours ago.” He handed it too him, “I suggest an immediate response.”

Quetzalcoatl read over the communiqué…“I think a response is in order…”

The Minister of War, Chief Warrior-General Tlanextic Zazanilli interrupted, “Sir, we have already begun mobilization and will be at full military readiness in only a short amount of time. As for ViZion wanting a rallying point here, you must remember our policy.”

Nochtli leaned back, “Ah yes, the policy. A lovely thing back from 2005…I remember signing that into law. We’ll have to make sure we don’t violate it. As for the alliance between states…” Quetzalcoatl chuckled lightly, “Well, I’ve been an strong advocate of pan-Americanism since 2000, why is it only now that others are thinking it’s a good idea?”

O F F I C I A L ~ P R O C L O M A T I O N

The Aztec National League has put great effort into maintaining a peaceful, stable role in the western hemisphere – something we have accomplished, despite the various challenges we have faced. However, the current crisis in Cazlia, a bordering nation, is too volatile to ignore. This imperialist invasion poses a significant threat to the long-term future of the Aztec National League, and poses a serious economic and humanitarian crisis to the Americas. Undoubtedly, economic and war refugees will be forced to search for a country, a land that will give them a fighting chance to succeed. These refugees will be faced with many of the same hardships we faced during the revolution – human rights violations, poverty, sickness and other intolerable conditions. Furthermore, this invasion opens the possibility of a direct military threat to the Aztec National League – a fully mobilized military force of nation hostile to our ally of ViZion would be quite literally a stone’s throw away from us. We can not stand idly by and not prepare for any potential scenario. At this moment, the government of Aztlán will be fully mobilizing the military; the entire military. We will be deploying millions of troops, armed with our best and latest weaponry to our borders. Furthermore, we will be conducting extensive naval patrols, monitoring our waters. Both sides of our nations will be protected by thousands of warships, carriers and submarines. No hostile force will get in.

This is not to say that we will go out of our way to engage in any conflict. The Aztec National League’s policy on the military has always been somewhat akin to ‘armed neutrality.’ Although we are not neutral in this situation, we will not provoke the invading forces. There are only three conditions that will drag us into this war – if we are attacked, we will fight. If our ally of ViZion is attacked, including their land in Cazlia, we will fight. Finally, if there are human rights violations committed against the people of Cazlia, we will fight.

With these conditions spelled out, we demand that all hostilities on both sides are halted and peace talks begin immediately. If these steps are not taken, hundreds of thousands, if not millions will be doomed. Is power worth that many lives and resources? The only sensible and logical answer would be no. All we demand is peace and quiet in this hemisphere, and if it comes to it, we will ensure that there will be peace and quiet, one way or the other.

Finally, the Aztec National League will actively attempt to minimize the impact of this war. Starting immediately, we will begin drawing up an evacuation plan – we will ensure that these refugees, these survivors of war, will have a place to go during this turmoil. If they wish to leave after the war and reclaim what they can of their lives, we will help them. If some wish to reestablish their lives within our nation, we will gladly accept them and ensure that their life in the ANL will be no different than anyone else’s life in the ANL. We wish we didn’t have to meddle in the affairs of our neighbors to the north, but as responsible neighbors in this global community, we must.”

Signed,
Quetzalcoatl Nochtli,

From: Quetzalcoatl Nochtli, Tlatoani of the Aztec National League

President Kilo,

With this invasion’s proximity to Aztec lands, it would be foolish not to mobilize. Although our military is permanently partially mobilized at all times, we will be mobilizing our entire military before anything happens.

As for the issue of establishing a rally point for your forces, this may prove tricky. The ANL has long had a prohibition on allowing the establishment of permanent foreign military bases on Aztec soil. However, since this is only going to be a temporary situation, I doubt that it is ViZion’s intent on having permanent bases in this area. Please elaborate more on your plan in some fashion, as this must be done right. As for the evacuation, this is more than acceptable.

As for a alliance across the Americas, you know that the ANL has long been a promoter of such a policy. As such, we will strongly support any policy of the sort, so as long as the policy is fair to all nations. Knowing you, I feel fully confident that we have no need to worry about fairness.

With luck, this situation will settle down. However, should this issue escalate, you have the Aztec people’s full support.

President Kilo of ViZion has brought up the proposal that we form an alliance of states in this portion of the world. The ANL has long supported such plan, but do to various reasons, including ideology, economics and whatnot, this has never taken shape. Seeing how such an alliance is needed in situations such as the invasion of Cazlia, I highly recommend that we discuss the issue as soon as possible.

I am willing to host a meeting between our leaders to discuss this issue at any time. Furthermore, if your respective nations wish to hold the meeting instead, I would be more than willing to discuss it there. Ships began moving immediately, a Staging point had been established, but most naval units would bypass it, electing to go straight into supporting positions. Prepositioned ships and Mobile Off-Shore base platforms converged on Staging Point Alice, an unassuming patch of ocean that would quickly be an active piece of Mondothian Sovereignty, supplying ships and aircraft with supplies while rallying troops to the combat zone.

Ministry of State

We are willing to agree to peace in Cazelia in exchange for the following:

Allowing Vetalia and its allies to occupy all lands in Cazelia, including Caze City, with the exception of a strip 50 miles wide between the country and ANL. That zone will be sovereign territory of ViZion and its allies and will be administered by forces under their control. They can do with their territory what they wish, and we will be able to do the same with ours.

If you agree to this, we will move to take possession of our territory and you can relocate anything you wish without interdiction for one month.

This has not gone un-noticed, the invasion of Duneria is much too close for comfort for our nation and we fear they might decide to expand to seize the Alaskian Oil Reserves. We may be forced into this war sooner than anyone thought, if they do reach our southern border we will have no choice but to attack. An alliance is greatly needed.

Steel and Fire

::: In some Northern Dunerian hellhole :::

The Dunerians were showing good tactics for what seemed to Major Tybalt "Kitty" Malone's jaundiced eye the first time. The Steelians were advancing from the forest, so they burned down the forest: simple and effective, if a bit crude. Of course, the 33rd hadn't been planning on using the forest as cover forever, and the next stage of the Steelian "Master Plan" was about to be put into effect, but they didn't have to know that.... yet.

Malone cast aforesaid jaundiced eye over the flames once again. Sergeant O'Brien and his Company, along with a hundred other good men and true, had been annihilated by the sudden assault; and it looked awfully like the enemy was receiving Reinforcements. That was no obstacle to the 33rd, of course; even as Malone gave the order artillery were beginning to fire upon the newcomers, first in small clumps and then in unified, co-ordinated waves of high explosive death. All along the Steelian line, the troops were pulling back; the artillery were resuming with a vengeance, however, ensuring that the enemy would have no time to take a breather.

On the Major's orders the entire battalion had split into three columns upon arrival; and on his orders, now, they would converge once again in a pincer movement, Malone's own column assaulting the enemy from the front while the others hit it from the left and right. He had only to give the word; no, that is inaccurate. "The word" had been given several minutes ago, and now all that was left was for the crews to scramble into position and begin the assault.

There was a sudden crescendo of artillery shells as the main attack began. Coming from seemingly all directions at once, it would bewilder the enemy, or at least surprise 'em. A hurried last shipment from Pacifica brought the grand finale in about now; meanwhile, the returning strike fighters began coating the enemy positions in thermobaric bombs, sucking the oxygen out of the air and crushing people into fundamental particles. As yet the Steelian troops were not in melée range; but a few crews out of each column crept within mortar and ATGM range and abruptly even more explosions started going up. A solid line of Steelian tanks, still a fair distance out of visual range, added its own barrage of shells. The aim was simple: soften up the enemy position, then overrun it from all sides.

It was necessary. The Dunerians had been delaying the Steelian troops for too long; there was a war to be won, and the Steelians were going to win it. Perhaps.

::: Pacifica :::

The guns thundered. It was likely that they could be heard on the Dunerian coast, perhaps mistaken by unwary civilians for yet another Pacific Northwest thunderstorm rolling in. Every minute, sixty shells flew straight and true towards an almost randomly selected group of targets in Duneria; the gunners were having way too much fun today. Until they ran out of ammunition -- and Pacifica had a good deal of ammunition left -- or until orders changed, they would keep reducing assorted areas of Duneria to rubble.

Then they saw the helicopters.

'Saw' isn't exactly the right word; the OTH radar array sitting on top of Pacifica's Mount Boreas reported their positions as they left Duneria for Pacifica itself, and the radar blips—while vague—looked a lot like helicopters. Of course, they were stealthy helicopters, so most radars wouldn't have so much luck; but Mount Boreas was three thousand feet above sea level and the OTH array was another fifty, giving it full sweep over a much wider horizon than a sea level radar, and detecting nearer objects with that much more accuracy.

The personnel at Pacifica held a hushed conference. If they really were helicopters, they were probably military helos, and thus needed to be terminated. Surface-to-air missiles could take care of that. On the other hand, if they were civilian helicopters traveling in formation.... unlikely but possible.... who cares? Civilians just help fuel the war effort, anyway. The conference lasted about a minute; then the shores around Pacifica burst open and hundreds of SAMs emerged, hitting Mach 4 as they screeched through the sky to target the helicopters. There were about three missiles for each helicopter, so even if they managed to evade one or two of them they wouldn't be out of hot water; nonetheless, just in case a few survived, AA guns on Pacifica were beginning to open their metaphorical eyes.

::: Arcadia, Steel and Fire :::

"Again?" Louis Silbane looked more asleep than awake. His eyes were open, but as they stared across the table at Triumvirate and Co12 member Chalabi Jones, Jones sensed that they were on autopilot: the man himself was cozy in bed back at the Maison Arcadien.

"Well, Lou, I'd told you from the start that we couldn't forge a lasting peace with them.... as long as we were on opposite sides of international politics, we'd end up facing off someday," Jones said.

The President of Steel and Fire sighed. "Well, we knew it'd be coming someday.... the Big War, so to speak. And we're virtually the only significant power on the continent that isn't aligned with them, so...."

Jones nodded significantly. "Intel's brought us their latest reports.... while we don't know exactly what they're talking about, we've seen them talking. Lone Alliance, Mondoth, Ay-en-ell, Cazelia.... it's looking a whole lot like we're about to end up on the wrong side of a continental alliance."

"What'll this do for public opinion?"

"Depends on how we play it. War's an excellent political tool if you use it right.... use it wrong and you get another 'Nam. As it is, I think this situation has potential."

"How so?"

"We're surrounded by the enemy on all sides.... yet we continue to battle on for freedom, against communists and Indians and any other slurs we can think of. Et cetera."

"Won't it go badly if we end up losing?"

"First off, we won't lose. Second, even if we come close, we'll make alliances with the other folk fighting in Cazelia -- Vetalia for instance; and with other folk on whose side we've fought before, like Red Tide. Hell, even our southern neighbour, Buddha C or whatever they're called, we could see whose side they're on with some well-placed diplomacy."

"Steel and Fire has sucked at diplomacy for time immemorial, though."

"Well, we can make an extra-special effort.... the circumstances demand it."

President Silbane's shoulders slumped. With effort he raised his head again. "And how goes the western front?"

"Absolutely lovely, Lou. We have the smallest force in the region, it seems, and we're making excellent use of it. Between us and the Vetalians, I won't say it'll be ours, but it'll at least be weakened enough to be brought to the surrender table."

"Good... good." Silbane was silent for a moment. "Mobilise the entire military, the reserves too. Deploy about half of all available forces to Avalon, reinforce the Black Isle and keep backups on Alyrion.... Send that message. It's time to start collecting our own allies."

And it was done.

Official Message to Buddha C and Vetalia [Encrypted]

Reports brought to our eyes indicate that just about every other significant nation on the North American continent, barring us three, has been exchanging secret messages and mobilising forces. In short, they're planning a party, and we haven't been invited. Shame!

We also notice that your nations have become involved in Cazelia, while we have become involved in neighbouring Duneria, which is allied to Cazelia.

These two situations have led us to extend a hand of friendship, solidarity, and potentially mutual defence to you. While arranging a physical conference may be unfeasible, due to the potential dangers of travel in such a time, as well as the limited amount of time available to us all, we would be amenable to discussion of trade agreements, embassy construction and so on at some future date when our sovereignty is no longer threatened.

Secret IC:

As the various commanders scrambled about, trying to implement orders that, to the untrained eye, would seem vague at best, the military insiders knew exactly what was going on. Within a few hours, the Vanguard Missile Defense Network, a massive collection of networked supercomputers, satellites and communications arrays would be monitoring every square inch of Aztec land, sea and airspace, making sure that no ICBM or other unwanted intrusion would have a good chance of unloading its deadly payload upon the cities, large and small of the Aztec National League. Of course, this didn’t mean that nothing could hit it, and while there was no indication that such a system would need to be used, it was well worth the cost to have this bit of insurance.

Within a day, every SAM site, from the traditional, easy to recognize launchers in the southern regions of the ANL to the more advanced central and northern bunkers, located deep underground, would be active. Linked to the Vanguard system, and the more conventionally focused Aerial Defense Grid, this system was to ensure that any encroachment by an aircraft or even a stray missile was met with total force. Although it would take several weeks to ensure that everything was in place, due to the socialist government’s constant demand on being partially mobilized at all times, what would take years to plan and execute would only take a scant amount of time.

State Dacha, Ariga, Totalitarian State of Red Tide

Foreign Minister Gromkyo nodded to the butler who answered the door into the antechamber that led to the General-Secrateries Officer. Though the butler was a low level functionary, it was essential to ones health to be polite to him. After all, the butler had his masters ear.

The antechamber was rather modest for the Dacha. There was some plush chairs, a nice-looking coffee table, a secretaries desk(with a pretty secretary), and all the usual amenities one would expect. It was currently 2:00 AM in the morning in Red Tide. The General-Secretary had a habit for summoning people at awkward times.

About 10 minutes later, the door opened and Defense Minister Murmansk walked out of the office. A associate(nobody this high up in the TSRT had any friends) of Gromkyo, Murmansk gave a polite nod before leaving.

"The General-Secretary will see you now, comrade." The secretary sitting behind the computer(one of the few modern variants in the country) said.

Gromkyo nodded and entered the office.

Narmonov was sitting, bent over some reports and scribbling away. Gromkyo would have bet those reports were liquidation(a euphamism for execution) orders for some of the second-in-command positions of the various ministers. Those second-in-commands had recently displeased Narmonov in some way, exactly what way... it was better not to find out.

Narmonov, without looking up, said, "Please, sit comrade, sit."

Gromkyo did, only then did Narmonov straighten up, he pointed to the papers.

"The engineers on the sub-orbital bomber project are running behind schedule, I am giving them a week to get back on schedule." He said, chuckling a little. Gromkyo chuckled too, only because it was in his best interest to chuckle along with Narmonov.

"Anyways, a bunch of high foreheads is not why I called you here. You do know of the Vetelians invasion of Cazelia?" Narmonov continued.

Gromkyo nodded, wondering where this was going.

"I want you to draft this message to them. Inform them that we are preparing to mobilize incase of any attempts of intervention by, say, the Lona Alliance." Narmonov finished, sliding a piece of paper across the table.

Gromkyo took it, looked it over, and then gave a thoughtful nod. Narmonov then bent back over his reports.

'Thats all?' Gromkyo thought as he stood up. "Thank you for inviting me, comrade General-Secretary."

Narmonov simply grunted. Narmonov could afford to be impolite, Gromkyo couldnt. Gromkyo didnt say anything more until he was back in his personal car, even then he only gave the driver the instructions to take him home.

'Another day.' Gromkyo mused.

2:23 PM, Tenochitilán, Grand Union Chambers, 6th Floor, Office of the Tlatoani

Although the sixth floor no longer had the grand view it used to have, it was still a good part of the complex that housed the Administrative Branch. Quetzalcoatl Nochtli didn’t mind the office, though with things around the ANL heating up, spending almost sixteen hours a day every day stuck in that office was starting to wear on him. He knew that he needed to continue to read over reports, sign off on orders and do a myriad of other things that require his stamped signature, but he needed a few minutes to stare out of the window…Project Urquidez on the otherhand is war time foreign espionage, something that may play an important role in the future.

His break would not be long-lived, as expected. The Minister of Intelligence and State Security, Victor Tonahuac walked in. He had no appointment set up, nor was his appearance expected. However, no one would try to stop Tonahuac – although he was not the most well known official in the Aztec government, he was clearly one of the most powerful. Although a member of the Soviet Republican Party, the hardliner counterpart of Quetzalcoatl Nochtli’s “more moderate” Socialist Labor Party, Tonhuac was an ardent loyalist to Nochtli. It was because of Tonhuac that the Socialist Labor Party and the Soviet Republican Party put aside their differences and formed the coalition which assured both parties’ dominance over the entire Aztec government. Still, despite this symbiotic relationship, some differences remained.

Quetzalcoatl turned around, noticing who it was, “Victor, good to see you. What’s on your mind?”

Victor, always the stoic, seemingly unemotional official, seemed a bit more serious that usual today. Quetzalcoatl knew that couldn’t mean anything good.

“Sir,” Victor began, “I request that I be authorized to begin intelligence gathering operations in regards to the Cazelian conflict. I am proposing we use remote surveillance until we are in a position to install more localized intelligence gathering units.”

Quetzalcoatl looked at his intelligence minister – he knew something that no one else in the government knew. In essence, the minister was saying that war was inevitable. “You really think we’ll be in a position to install agents? I haven’t heard anything from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about this assessment.”

Victor nodded, “Statistically and historically, a direct conflict is inevitable. The Ministry of Intelligence has always had better information than our friends at Foreign Affairs. More so, Dr. Wellington has his office ran optimistically – they want peace, and they’ll try to obtain it up to a point. It’s an honorable goal, but we know, along with the military, that liberalism doesn’t always work. We are realists, and sometimes, you have to put aside what you want to see the clear picture.”

Quetzalcoatl nodded and asked, “Let me review your proposal.”

Victor handed it to him, “I think you will agree that this plan is actually quite good…”

Secret IC:

Garza and Uetzcayotl would understand what all of this meant. Project Veracruz, although seemingly benign, could be carried out to an unconstitutional extreme. It was basically counter-espionage; trying to ensure that no foreign spy was in the nation. Although citizens in good standing wouldn’t have to worry much, extreme dissidents and all foreigners, regardless of where they came from would be placed under much more scrutiny.

As for Project Puerto Barrios, that was the center piece of the Aztec spy satellite network. Like most things in the ANL, the state owned the entire satellite network and thus, what could be a simple weather satellite or public communication system could also house espionage technology. Of course, it was devious and if knowledge of such program became public, would cause a firestorm of controversy. However, it was a lot more secret than having full time dedicated spy satellites.

By the time the last platform of the Sea-Base was assembled, aircraft were already landing on it, mostly VC-210 cargo aircraft and VC-229 naval support transports with a small number of massive VC-205 cargo aircraft. The aircraft alternately loaded an unloaded various cargo, troops and vehicles were off loaded and transferred to ships, a patrol of VC-229's provided in-air refueling for VC-205's waiting for one on the base to take off so it could have room to land, as well as for aircraft not landing on the base at all.

Inside the command base one of the numerous low ranking officers approched
"Sir the Steelian created Forest fires are spreading, if they continue this tactic, the fire will inevitablity spread into our nation."
"Destroying untolds amount of lumber, mills, and villages." Came the answer.
"How much time?"
"At least 3 more days,"
"Get the rest of the armored at the border, then we launch."

"God dammit!" swore Colonel Brom.
"What is it Colonel?" asked Flight Commander Rykov
"That napalm we used......"
"What about it?"
"Well it's burning out of control, and according the Lone Alliance, it's heading toward's their territory."
"Shit!, do we have any planes that could put the fires out?"
"Some, but all the pilot's are trainees that just graduated from the Firefighter academy."
"They'll do," replied Rykov. "Telegram our allies in The Lone Alliance and explain our situation."

..................................................................................................

As of 14 hour's ago, Duneria had finally mobilized the last of it's forces. Setting up bunker's and other protective structures, the army was proud to report that all preperation's were made to hold out against the invader's. Over 50 Million soldier's were ready to defend Duneria with their lives. Most of them, grizzled vetran's from dozen's of battles. Other's, had just been drafted.

Rather than defend the blasted position's of the first 30 km of Northern Duneria, the 500 defending soldier's retreated under the cover of Air Support and Artellery. However, this was not before the soldiers booby trapped the area with powerful explosives. Retreating troops caught glimpse of huge explosion's coming from trap's that had been triggered by the invader's. The area's were then given doses of mortar bombardment by unknown "insurgent's".

Meawhile, Duneria's navy had finally been restored to full strength. Rolling out from Tenguska harbor, they consisted of 380 Submarines and 500 other classes of ship's.

In the lab's below Duneria, the Warrior/2 mech's were inspected by scientist's. They had done so much damage, and yet, they were still weak. The bullet's that had riddled the mech's armor, seemed to an armor piercing quality to it. The round's had gone right through the armor and had killed the pilots.
This had to be taken care of.

The Red Hand platoon dived further into the sea, as bullet's and tracer round's scattered throughout the water. 250 out the 1000 died, as bullet's ripped through them. Soon the water began to turn bloody, giving the SpecOp's some cover. Aiming toward's the ship's and submarines, The Red Hand's fire a volley of 750 mini torpedoes. At the edges of the coast, the 10 hidden submarines fired a volley of 300 cruise missiles at the Vetalian fleet.

::: North Duneria :::

"No! You idiots!"

Major Malone's yells came in vain. The explosions drowned out any further comment as he sunk his forehead in his palms; it was the first breach of Steelian discipline so far, and the war was only just beginning. A few of the younger and more eager soldiers had advanced straight into enemy positions; their bodies had been immediately been engulfed in huge fireballs, as they hadn't paid attention to the radar/IR reports of mines strewn liberally around abandoned fortifications.

Calling his men to him, Malone broadcast an announcement in true drill-sergeant fashion. "You guys all saw that, right? Now let that be a lesson to you. Disobey my orders, or act independently of them, and you could get your butts blown up. Now, we aren't stopping here; we're advancing into Duneria proper. Reports indicate that civilians may be armed and prepared to resist; I'm instructing Pacifica to liberally coat any and all cities we find with missiles to soften up resistance. But remember this.

"The Dunerians are our enemies. If they show signs of resisting us, shoot them. If they continue to resist, shoot them again. If we get into urban warfare scenarios, avoid house-to-house fighting; burn down the houses, then go in. Above all, when I tell you to stop, stop. When I tell you to attack, attack; even if they look harmless. I'm sure y'all know the drill. And don't do anything stupid; out here we're far enough from the Mainland that we can't waste men or equipment. I'm counting on you!"

As the columns of the 33rd Rough and Ready began to move south into Duneria, fully mechanised and preceded by minesweeper/destroyer units to take care of any nasty surprises the Dunerians had left behind, Malone called an aide-de-camp to him. "Subaltern, how many did we lose?"

"A few hundred killed and about twice as many wounded, sir."

"How many enemy troops were we facing?"

"Hard to say, sir. They were in fortified positions, so they could have been defended by as few as a thousand or as many as a hundred thousand; whatever the number, they were able to retreat pretty quickly, so I'm guessing it's closer to the thousands range."

"And how many survived?"

"Satellite images showed a little under five hundred retreating, but we're not sure how accurate they are.... some of those five hundred could have been big barrels or any number of other things. And there could have been well over five hundred retreating. All the smoke and dust from the bombardment got in the way, sir."

"Well, I guess it'll do. But we'll have to do better next time."

"Yes, sir."

The mechanised columns moved on, while along the flanks through the undergrowth moved HARE units in Hunter mode; camouflaged clothing and expert training kept their motion almost silent, and even their guns and weapons were dulled so as not to show in the woods. They were hunting for ambushes; and the HAREs were perhaps the highest and most élite of Steelian special forces (with the possible exception of the Arcadian Guard). Nothing could escape their notice, unless it ran away well in advance of their arrival.

Even further in advance and around the Steelian formation was its air support. Strike fighters, air superiority fighters, and UAVs dominated the skies; flying low to keep under the radar, but ranging out far enough to report enemy formations and, if needed, engage enemy units. The Steelian war machine was on the move.

::: Pacifica :::

The gunners were torn. On the one hand, there was the Dunerian Navy sailing out of port, just asking to get blown up. On the other, there was Duneria itself, full of relatively intact cities, roads, military bases and the like. Their orders were indefinite; as long as they worked together with Missile Command and didn't blow up Pacifica's airfields, they were fine, or so they gathered.

In the end forty of the sixty 25" guns turned themselves on the Dunerian Navy. There were at least five hundred surface ships to choose from, and the gunners started with the largest ones: carriers, battleships, cruisers. With subsequent volleys, as a target was eliminated, they moved on to the next one. It was almost fun.

Of course, this wasn't all. Missile command took their orders as well and began launching volleys of SSM-45 missiles towards the Dunerian fleet. Billed an anti-submarine weapon, SSM-45s are just as effective against surface ships; at 80 km from their targets, they shed a stage and dropped under the waves, becoming torpedoes. While the primary target of the torpedoes was the submarines, dozens more continued to seek out surface ships. Volley after volley of 500 missiles erupted into the atmosphere, skimmed across the sea, then sank beneath it to hunt their prey; the game was on.

Meanwhile, the other twenty 25" guns kept their focus on the intact infrastructure of Duneria, coming down from random angles according to the whim of the gunners who fired them. Shells whistled down and struck savagely, hurling rubble through the sky and leaving craters; the purpose? Demoralisation. No-one can be kept awake through the night hours by explosions, suffer power outages and water shortages, and live in constant fear of getting blown up, and still keep one's will to fight and morale. Well, all right, a few people can, but they're the exception.

Every now and then bombers would drop leaflets urging Dunerians to surrender to Steel and Fire. They wouldn't be mistreated—Steel and Fire was a liberal democracy and didn't officially use torture—and, provided they joined the military or did something else to serve their new homeland, they could become full citizens and enjoy all the rights and privileges thereof.

Steelian Command wasn't expecting very many to follow this advice; nonetheless, it couldn't hurt to let the Dunerians know what they were missing.

"Duneria has apologized for the fires, but we have told them that they only did this because of the invasions by Steel and Fire." Said another officer.
"Steel and fire has started bombardment of their ships, as well as advancing inland, they should be nearing our borders shortly.

"That's it, we're not going to take this anymore." The commander said standing up. "Commander Garrett?" He paused as another officer spoke up,
"Message from Defense Minister Morrow, she says that you are cleared."
"Excellent we march to war!"

Awaiting orders!
"I want 3 F-117s to do a probe mission towards their islands, if they can get close enough I want them to attempt to take out their radars. If they get detected they are to RTB.

"The next thing is to, Contact Viktor and tell him his men are at a go, and that I wish him happy hunting."

"Anything else?"

"Mobilize the beach defenses and tell the border troops to prepare for operations."

IC:
ViZion has ordered the full mobilization of ViZion. While at this time, it has no plans to intervene in the Cazelian situation, it seems very clear their next step will be towards another nation.

As such, ViZion is arming its defenses, and is preparing to launch to the aid of her allies, should the hostile forces strike at those in the America's.

This has also created quite a buzz within ViZion's thousands of paramilitaries. These paramilitaries are groups of militants who's single objective is that, should ViZion be invaded, they can quickly react to defend their family, friends, neighbors, homes, and country. Some of these are small, some are massive, some are more basic, and some appear as well equipped and trained as the ViZionarian military itself. And many of them are networked together so they make assist eachother throughout the nation.

Some days earlier.

A knock at the door.

"Come in," called Anton Malustar, the new Imperator, looking up from his computer. He had spent the whole morning arguing with bankers about when exactly the Armed Forces could draw the newly appropriated money for them, but if this message was what he thought it was, he was about to have much more important business on his hands.

The doors of his spacious office opened to reveal a young officer, carrying two pieces of paper. He strode through, saluted the Imperator, and opened his mouth; however, before he could speak, Malustar simply held out his hand for the papers, and after a moment's hesitation, the young man handed them over and left without a word.

Looking at them briefly, he saw the reports were exactly what the Imperator had expected them to be. Satellite imaging revealed the construction of defenses on the Cazelian border with Vetalia, as well as an assembly of troops in the same area. While the Imperium had no real way of knowing if Vetalia was ready for war, this was a good indication that Vetalia was about to invade, and soon: they intended it anyway, and it would obviously be better to get it over with before more defenses and reinforcements were made available to the Cazelians. And so, knowing both that the war was imminent and what it meant, Sacred Emperor Ishamael had issued the mobilization orders days ago. Millions of personnel and thousands of ships, floating in the reconstructed harbors of Korronis, awaited only the consecration to leave for the area...and this was the signal. Smiling to himself, Imperator Malustar reached for his telephone and dialed General Yataghan.

***

Several days later, in international waters off the Cazelian coast.

"It's a hell of a sight, isn't it, General?"

Yataghan spared the young idiot a glare before returning to the new satellite images. The Steelians were invading Duneria, apparently to take pressure off the Vetalians attacking Cazelia, and were currently blasting the hell out of it; perhaps most amusing of all, ViZion had mobilized, and while Ishamael might be taking a less friendly approach to relations with the Imperium Doomanum, it was very difficult to imagine ViZionarians as anything but vermin. It would be entertaining to face them in combat.

A cleared throat brought Yataghan standing straight up and glaring at his borderline-insolent second-in-command. High Admiral Ludo Anor was regarded as something of a prodigy, having led an Imperial fleet to victory in practically every engagement of Sacred Emperor Lucifer's reign; unfortunately, this had given the former commoner something of an ego, and while Ishamael and Lord Rahvin had been able to inspire obedience in him, Ludo regarded Yataghan as something of an amateur compared to those he had worked with in the past: an attitude Yataghan had no intention of tolerating.

"Yes, High Admiral? You have something to say?" If anything, Ludo smiled wider at Yataghan's acid tone. "Yes, actually, General. Have you received any communication from the Vetalians?"

"No." Yataghan scowled. "No, we have not. They have not yet acknowledged us. So I have ordered a message sent to the Vetalian government, asking for any additional information and politely inquiring where they want us to go. Millions of crack soldiers, tens of thousands of tanks, and several thousand warships shouldn't go amiss...but I don't want to engage too heavily. We're here for ViZion, like the Sacred Emperor said, and I have no intention of being bogged down too far away from them when they get here."

OFFICIAL DIPLOMATIC COMMUNIQUE

To whom it may concern, Vetalian Government

Greetings! My name is Lord General Yataghan, and I am in command of a sizable Kregaian invasion force located in international waters, off the Cazelian coast. We sympathize with your cause and are here to assist you; however, for political reasons, we have one condition: we must be in a position where in the event of ViZionarian intervention, we will be instrumental in defeating them. In the meantime, however, we are willing to assist you however we can. A detailed description of the size and nature of my force is attached; we request that you similarly provide any necessary information concerning enemy defenses, allied forces, etc, that you believe necessary for optimal battlefield performance. "Are the preperation's made?"
"Yes sir," drawled Commissar Tibelt. "All forces are ready to attack, and my mech's are ready to ki-i-k-k-ll, hehehehehe hahaha!!!!!

Colonel Stein frowned, Tibelt was really enjoying his job way too much

Stein looked out towards the advancing Steelian's. Bulldozing the forest before them, they looked like a grey cancer spreading towards the city of Artenzzi. Soldier's, tanks, and aircraft moved toward's the Dunerian position's.

Stein raised his hand.
"Ready!" he shouted.

The 5000 soldier's hidden in the forest, loaded their rocket laucher's with Burret rounds. Burret rounds were rocket's that penetrated APC and tank armor. The round would then detonate, killing the crew in a buzz of lethal shrapnel.

In the air, the new Mig 51's stayed above cloud cover, ready to drop upon the Steelian aircraft.

Hidden also in the undergrowth, were 400 T-90 tank's, all with armor piercing explosive rounds.

Additionaly, sniper's were positioned in the treetop's and Tibelt's mech's were ready to unleash hell on the advancing enemy.

Soon the Steelian's were in range.

Stein opened his intercom.

"ATTACK!" he roared.

The soldier's armed with the Burret round's opened fire on their target's, achieving sucess when the viechles skidded to a sickening halt. Troop's with heavy-machinegun's started to fire upon the troop's.

Clanking out of the forest came the improved Warrior/2 mechs. Cackling maniacally, Commissar Tibelt and his Mech's sythed through the enemy with their chaingun's and rocket's.

In the air, the Mig's dived on the enemy, firing barrages of guided rocket'sat enemy planes .
Soon fireball's lit up the sky.

The T-90's began their grusome task of turning Steelian tank's into scrap metal and Troop's into slab's of meat.

The sniper's did their part too. They picked off fleeing soldier's and Officer's that were rallying men.

The battle for Artenzzi had begun.

::: North Duneria :::

Several hours ago

"Major, we've received our orders. Free rein, but don't get too entangled," the aide-de-camp yelled in Major Malone's ear.

"Thank you, Subaltern," Malone yelled back. The yelling was necessary because the sound of fifty thousand throats proudly belting out an old Steelian battle song was otherwise overwhelming. It was the leftmost column of the three; as the Steelian march was heading southwest towards the Cazelian border and friendly Vetalian troops, it was the eastern-most column of the three, and it was attracting attention for a reason. Namely, because to its west, and in a much better line of fire to hit the city of Artenzzi, were two more columns of fifty thousand men and assorted vehicles that were perfectly silent and much stealthier. The other two columns had rubbed down their equipment and uniforms with camo paint in order to blend in with the landscape from above; tanks and artillery guns were kept under the cover of trees and forests. The third, or "bait", column openly made use of roads when it was convenient for their direction of travel; they traveled in APCs and IFVs, main battle tank turrets reflecting the glint of sunlight, and they sang openly. Overhead was the ubiquitous air support; the Steelians knew well that air superiority was one of the most important aspects of winning a war.

Malone himself was commanding the "bait" column. It improved morale; while it was technically allowed for Steelian commanders to direct operations from a bunker somewhere, it was looked down upon as cowardly and officers who did command this way were generally more disliked by their troops. Malone, who was eyeing a generalship, was aware that officers who failed to curry favour with their subordinates tended to be passed over for promotion. Hence, he put his life on the limb along with everyone else.

The day passed on as the Steelians continued on their southward march through the first thirty or forty kilometres of Duneria. Then the subaltern struck again.

Forty-five minutes ago

"Air support is reporting a furball, sir."

"Thank you, Subaltern. All units! Halt!"

The Steelians froze, as though someone had hit a pause button. Malone watched as Column Three ground to a halt; a moment later adjutants reported that Columns One and Two had also stopped their forward motion. Malone smiled and nodded in approval.

"All right. Columns One and Two, Earthshaker is a go. Column Three, let's hit that Piñata."

A succession of hushed "Yessirs", and the 33rd Rough and Ready prepared to do what it did best.

In the sky

Dunerian radar officers would be confronted with a magnificent sight as, abruptly, fighter planes began to appear, seemingly out of nowhere.

Emerging from a double cover of clouds and radar jamming planes, a dozen squadrons [240 planes] of ASF-71 fighters in a wide formation entered the brilliant light of the sun. The setting sun in its dying glories was behind them; in front of them, Dunerian MiG-51 fighters. They knew well what to do. Starting off with medium-range AAMs, four apiece, they accelerated to hit dogfighting range, then decelerated once more to ensure greater maneuverability. Two more MRAAMs and twelve SRAAMs were the complement of each remaining fighter, and their 24mm cannons would come into play as well.

Still within the cloudbank were eight squadrons of SF-9 fighters, each one carrying eight thousand kilograms of bombs and missiles. These were hastily unloaded on the Dunerian positions below -- the pilots wasted no time checking for kills, as the place was crawling with Dunerians and something had better die -- and then the strike fighters turned and fled. There were more en route, along with the 141st Strategic Bomber Wing out of Pacifica, but first the air had to be cleared of "bogies". And just in case the Dunerians hadn't gotten the message yet, another dozen squadrons of ASFs were on the way.

T-Zero, The Ground

The earth was shaking.

The ambushers found themselves ambushed. Dunerians who had been lying in wait for Steelians suddenly found themselves the victims of a massive artillery bombardment coming from seemingly all sides at once. The napalm bombs from the strike fighters were used unsparingly on the forests; the aim was to burn down any little bit of cover the enemy could use. UAVs had reported only a small, perhaps token, force -- five thousand troops, a few hundred tanks, some of those ridiculous "mechs" -- and Malone suspected that most of the enemy troops to be countering him at Artenzzi would be within the city itself.

As Column Three marched on, appearing to bypass the city altogether, Malone gave the curt order to anybody else listening: "Torch Artenzzi."

Pacifica was the first to respond. "We're doing our best, sir, but there are some boats in the way. We'll train a few guns on it."

Columns One and Two responded similarly. "Most of our firepower is devoted to cleaning up the mess at the gates right now, Major."

"We outnumber and outgun the idiots. Devote one column to the defenders and one to the city itself," Malone ordered.

"Yes sir."

As yet the Steelian troops were not within melée weapon range -- guns were out of the question, and mortars were indefinite. Rocket launchers were less so; dozens of smaller rockets began to slam into Dunerian positions, while the larger rockets -- MLRS -- had their own target. Artenzzi itself. With a whoosh and a mighty bang, six rockets crashed into the outskirts of the city; it was almost a signal, as dozens more began to follow, leaving craters in roads, blowing up houses and bridges, and generally smashing things.

It was only a prelude to the destruction that would be unleashed once the bombers arrived.

::: Pacifica :::

Most of the missiles never hit land. Steelian Missile Command had only to load in the SAMs and fire them in the right direction, and missiles and shells fell out of the sky or exploded in large fireballs. The large artillery guns were also protected with THELs and, well, being underground. But nothing is 100% effective.

Several missiles slammed into assorted areas of Pacifica, leaving craters. A Dunerian commander got lucky; several battleship shells (the only types of shells with sufficient range to hit Pacifica, anyway) struck one of the guns, taking it and its gunner out. A few missiles struck home at a pair of smaller 12" artillery guns, removing both from commission. But Pacifica did not go down in a blaze of fire.

It stood its ground.

Lurking near the seafloor, attack submarines waited for the enemy fleet to get too close; meanwhile, the gunners and missile commanders kept up their relentless bombardment of both Dunerian fleet and Duneria itself. Cities and ships alike would burn today, although whose was another question. Meanwhile, on airfields on the opposite side of the island, strategic bombers were beginning to take off for their first night raid. Artenzzi was doomed; the days of every intact building were numbered, at least in the high-n-mighty opinion of Air Command.

OOC: Cazelia, if your forces don't RP resistance to my attack on Caze City, I'll have to assume they are not going to and will take it without a fight.

Command Ship Sumerki, Vetalian Fleet

The Kriegan communique was brought to the attention of Fleet Admiral Gordunov, who promptly sent a reply to Lord General Yataghan:

"We are currently facing a Dunerian incursion to the north as well as entrenched Cazelian resistance around the capitol. Our allies are pushing in on all sides, but we still face the possibility of intervention by The Lone Alliance's Alaskan forces or a southern strike by the Aztec National League. However, we have massed a huge quantity of firepower to deal with any potential threats and we outnumber the Cazelians significantly. If need be, we can bring up further reinforcements from Vetalia within a few weeks.

When the time comes to act against the ViZonians, your forces will be alongside ours in battle. Your men will have a prime opportunity to strike at their forces."

Vetalian Fleet

The incoming cruise missiles streaked towards the Vetalian fleet but were halted by the deployment of missiles, jamming devices, and short-range CIWS fire, resulting in only 50 missiles finding targets. They did moderate damage to the Neustrashimy cruisers, crippling 7 and damaging 23 more. However, the ships counterfired, unloading a salvo of 700 guided SS-25 ASW missiles at the 10 submarines while simultaneously targeting them with mounted guns. A squad of 30 Amur 1850 submarines also closed in on the enemy subs, unloading their own salvo of 900 guided torpedoes at them while the ASW ships continued fire on them from afar.

The mini-torpedoes were somewhat more effective, crippling 17 ships and damaging another 39, but the majority were intercepted by defensive fire as well as the overall limitations of targeting them at the ships, primarily due to the abundant visual, acoustic, infrared and radar signals that created massive interference with targeting. The ships rebounded quickly and continued withering fire on the specops troops, including hundreds of targeted shots from troops equipped with sniper rifles on board the ships.

Within a few minutes, the remaining Red Hand troops were completely surrounded by patrol boats and light cruisers, and helicopters circled them, demanding surrender. If they could not find a way out, they would be forced to either surrender or be likely annihilated by the circle of ships.

Outside Caze City

The commanding officers in charge of the ground troops drafted their demand for the city's surrender, offering amnesty and freedom of movement within the occupied regions in exchange for laying down their arms and allowing the army to take control of the capitol. They gave them 4 hours to mull it over before deciding their fate. The 7 million troops and several hundred thousand tanks and vehicles were now less than 10 miles from the capitol, and artillery were poised to continue their bombardment of the city if they did not surrender.

"So we have permission to fire, then?" There was no disguising the relieved look on High Admiral Anor's face as he said the words. Yataghan suppressed a sigh and replied curtly, "Yes. Get your firing solutions ready; Standard Pattern bombardment, directed towards the Seattle and Tacoma areas, and any military installations in the path of the landing. Oh, and cut Route 101; I don't want anything moving up or down it to challenge us. Scramble the fighters, put all ships to full alert, ready the troops, all the normal preparations. Then you can open fire on my mark. Don't be premature, High Admiral." Anor saluted sharply and turned away, already issuing orders.

Across the vast fleet, the preparations went out. In the vast bellies of the transport ships, Legionaries woke up, prayed, checked their equipment, and prepared for combat. On the ships, missiles and guns were readied, and aircraft swarmed into the air from the carriers, a cloud to darken the sky like the stain of a god's rage. On the bridges of the titanic Apophis-class supercapitals, captains and commodores and admirals finalized the plans for bombardment, and if necessary, invasion. Duneria was about to face the terrifying, brutal force of a gale of war.

Minutes later, with all the preparations complete and millions of Imperial soldiers waiting on his word, Lord General Yataghan gave the order to open fire.

Immediately the air thickened with tens of thousands of missiles; some capable of tearing through bunkers and mountainsides to detonate with awful force, others 'normal' missiles capable of blasting apart a squad or two; they were joined by over eighteen thousand Pandemonium II missiles, a cruise missile packing an incendiary warhead capable of flattening everything in a forty-foot radius and setting fire to anything outside that circle. Following at a slightly slower pace came the shells, ranging from the huge, 32-inch guns of the supercapitals to the 6-inch shells of the smaller ships. They streaked with deadly speed towards their targets, the Dunerian military installations on the Northwest Pacific Coast, with enough power to turn the sands to glass for miles, while beyond, the thousands of Imperial vessels sailed into Dunerian waters, the aircraft above blocking the sunlight so that it shone down in sparse rays on the green, glassy sea. The war had begun.

OFFICIAL MILITARY COMMUNIQUE

To: Major Tybalt Malone

Certainly. Our next wave will include roughly nine-thousand Pandemonium IIs directed at your target, easily capable of laying waste to the city of Artenzzi entire. We currently plan to land between Port Angeles and Aberdeen, Washington (OOC: I used Google Maps as a reference, if that helps), smashing all enemy resistance in the area and capturing Seattle, from which we will direct attacks north in support of your men. And regarding excess, we have more than enough supplies to fire continuously for longer than this battle is expected to last; however, your concern is appreciated. Blood and Honor.

Signed,
Lord General Yataghan

Southern Duneria, 2:34 AM

four Cazelian C-130 transports full of Loyalist Marines and G.H.O.S.T operatives soared over New Leningrad. eight minutes later, the doors opened, and the troops jumped...

Outer Artenzzi city, 2:57 AM

it was quiet at first, until the roar of helicopters sounded in the distance. 129 UH-60Gs and CH-47s filled with Loyalist Marines began thier landing. several of them were destroyed by Steelian anti air systems, but the rest began unloading the troops and supplies.

The 7 million troops and several hundred thousand tanks and vehicles were now less than 10 miles from the capitol, and artillery were poised to continue their bombardment of the city if they did not surrender.

a two words was sent to the Vetalians

Reading the response from the Cazelians, the Colonel General angrily crumpled it and threw it to the ground. "If they want a fight, we'll give them a goddamn fight. Order your corps to continue advancing on the city and have the artillery resume bombardment...we'll take this city one way or another."

The armies continued their advance, the 7 million strong force moving closer and closer to the capitol with each passing minute. The artillery began to launch another salvo, raining tens of thousands of rounds down upon anything and everything they could target in the area of Caze City. Each round carried sufficient firepower to damage and destroy several buildings in its blast radius or devastate a position of soldiers in the open. The artillery fired without concern for civilians, focusing solely on destroying whatever they could within the capitol.

Why aren't I doing much damage to you Steel and Fire?

A) You haven't taken much damage from repeated bombardments and strikes -- I've attacked your military bases several times, shelled your cities, and bombarded your navy, yet you seem to have ignored all of those. I assumed that if a smaller and much less military powerful nation, like Duneria, could shrug off such bombardments, a large nation that has focused almost exclusively on the military since its foundation should do pretty well, too.

B) Your post was not detailed enough. I had no idea what exactly you were attacking, with how many missiles and shells, and of what types.

::: High above Artenzzi :::

Helicopters.

A squadron of ASF-71s was the first to notice them. The ASF-71s were serving as part of Column Three's air support; accompanying them were plenty of strike fighters. A score of radars turned their unblinking eyes on the helos. The helicopters were coming in from the south, and were apparently not Kregaian or Vetalian; which meant they were enemy helicopters. This is going to be easy.

Medium-range air-to-air missiles targeted the helicopters as they approached; eighty of them in all. Immediately afterwards, a hundred and sixty SRAAMs hurtled in, heralding the more maneuverable ASF-71s' arrival in visual range. The air superiority fighters could fly rings around the larger and slower helicopters; arranging in a traditional dogfighting formation, they began downing as many helicopters as they could before they landed.

In the minds of the pilots, this was a turkey shoot.

the Cazelians fired back with their MRLS systems and their heavy artillery. the Cazelians had also set weak tunnels underground, which would collapse when tanks or vehciles drover over them. the Cazelians had also set upautomated defense systems, such as motion mines, EMP mines and anti infantry mines

-Just inside Dunerian Waters-
As the ships of The Warmaster entered the waters of Duneria they floated right over a TLA Ambush, while the trap orginally was planned for others, the Submariners just couldn't pass up a chance to damage some superships.
So as the ships entered the waters, 40 sucide subs activated their systems and swarmed upwards towards the surface vessels, 12 heading for the rudder and screws of the "Superships" and the rest targeting transports and Air Defense ships.

-Alaskan\Duneria Border-
With a loud roar 47 FROG-7 missiles HE were launched into the air towards the Steel and Fire Landing group 30 miles south, at the exact same time, A flood of TLA Vehicles and Armour flooded across the border, Infantry following rapidly behind. Nearby a TLA Camera crew snapped photos.

-Near Pacifica-
The 3 Stealths approched from the north while the Defenses were distracted by the attack from the Dunerian fleet.

-Alaskan Coast-
Soldiers and officers quickly moved up to begin manning the numerous defenses that lay scattered across the Alaskan shoreline, With such a large number of hostiles in the area, they could not afford to take chances. Nearby in a nearby Military Base, TLA Planes prepared to take flight. The war was on, and speed was of the essence.

OOC: And the odd thing is, I've only deployed about 1-2% of my armed forces.... :P

I suspect that we'd be about evenly matched if your defenders used better tactics. As it is, I've seen mainly ambush, which has a much slimmer chance of working due to the nature of military intelligence these days. Our air support can spot your guys lying in wait; our special forces can find your positions and report back to base. Anyway, the element of surprise is useless because we're prepared for Dunerians to drop out of the trees at any moment. Here are a few suggestions instead.

- Divide and conquer.
- Pincer movement.
- Create a diversion.
- Shadow war/guerilla war.
- Gain air superiority.
- Gain numerical superiority (probably inadvisable, but it could work).
- Scorched earth (if all else fails).

OOC: I can't find the OOC thread so I'll just put this here...TLA, you can't just have subs spring out of nowhere. Furthermore, with almost a thousand of my subs in the area as well as hundreds of patrolling helicopters, it would've been almost impossible for them to stay hidden. I won't ignore it, but keep it in mind.

IC: Remarkable, sometimes, how disaster comes and goes without incident.

As the massive armada crossed into Dunerian waters, several dozen unidentified submarines suddenly powered on, beneath the fleet, and headed towards the supercapitals and the transports. Seconds to impact and with little, if any, time for human intervention. Thank the gods for the BattleNet.

The sonar systems of the fleet lit up as soon as the enemy subs activated, and in a blaze of calculation, the ships' computers analyzed the number and nature of enemy contacts, quickly enacting the protocol for defense in such a situation. From their launchers beneath the hulls of the ships, torpedoes streaked out towards the suicide subs, whose inertia was too great for them to dodge. All but two exploded in a cloud of superheated steam and bubbles, but the pair of survivors plowed into the armored hulls of the Apophis-class flagships. Damage was minimal; the Betrayer of Hope suffered a hit that interfered with one of the ship's internal waterjets, slowing it down somewhat; repairs began immediately. The other merely slammed into the armor of the supercapital's hull, causing only cosmetic damage.

more tips for Duneria-

-improvise, try to win with what you have at your disposal
-set hard to see traps, such as tunnels filled with explosives
-scare the enemy, make them fear you
-use roadside bombs, induces fear and shock
-Propoganda, make the enemy homesick and demoralised
-use artillery, pin the enemy, allowing more time to prepare
-intimidate them, lure them into ambushes
-wait for the enemy to make mistakes, it will come to your advantage

"Oi. What's that?"

"What's what?"

"Couple little blips on radar coming from Alaska."

"Eh. Ignore 'em. We're under attack from the other direction."

"The Kregaian Navy's in the other direction."

"Well, good for them. They can kill off the Dunerians for us, what?"

The young officer sighed. No use talking to his superiors. And those looked awfully like stealth planes. He picked up a satphone to missile command, an idea immediately springing into his head.

"Surface to air missile launchers."

"Yes sir?"

"Look at your radar. Do you see a few blips heading towards us from Alaska?"

"Yes sir. You want us to kill them?"

"No, not yet. Wait for them to get within fifty nautical miles. Inform them that if they do not turn around within the next five nm they will be shot down unconditionally. If they don't turn around, shoot 'em."

"Roger."

A very short time later a radio transmission reached the three F-117s -- the first indication that they were being tracked. It was a simple one, but hopefully, it got the Steelians' message across: Turn around or die. Almost immediately, nine SAM launchers on Pacifica began powering up, missiles sliding into the launch slots in case the TLAians didn't listen.

::: Duneria :::

"Wait, who's coming in behind us again?" Malone asked languidly as outside, his forces bombarded Artenzzi.

"The Lone Alliance.... we're not sure who they are, but they've apparently decided to attack us, sir. Should we bother with them?"

"Well, they're in MLRS range," Malone mused. "So, why not."

An instant later a panicked series of shouts arose from immediately outside. "Missiles inbound!" "Estimated forty inbound, perhaps fifty. Deploying anti-air artillery..." "....Machineguns...." "Strike fighters firing...." "Impact in seven seconds, five, four—"

Then it was all lost in the sounds of mighty explosions. Malone peered outside; the wreckage of a forest and some of its contents were buffeted everywhere, with even the vehicle next to his—a supply truck—turned on its side. Out of it, bleeding in four places and with a rapidly swelling black eye, the young subalt who had made the last shout grinned sheepishly. "I miscalculated, sir."

Malone was no longer paying much attention. "MLRS units, return fire. Keep our heavy artillery on standby, we're going to need it. Pacifica!..... Damn it! Pacifica!"

As the Lone Alliance army began to move south towards Steelian positions, the MLRS opened thunderous fire. The first rocket to hit had a big sign hung around it, reading, "The Republic of Steel and Fire hereby declares war on you. That is all.". Following a first volley, the launchers fired a second volley, this one thermobaric. And fast approaching now were strike fighters preparing to unload a lot of nasty stuff on the newcomers.

"Small change of plans," Malone radioed. "All units fall back from Artenzzi. Column One, maintain bombardment of city; Columns Two and Three, prepare to engage Lone Alliance forces."

OOC: They've been sitting on the bottom since before you arrived, deactivated and basicly dead to everything, Think a sub around the size of the Alvin Deep sea sub designed to sit below the normal Crush depth until activated. When activated it floods it's tanks with Air and activates either Water jets or several propellers, Water jet ones are mainly designed for speed, but while slower the propellers have an ingenius design, they have motors on all sides of the sub. I've launched the water jets and you basicly blew them out of the water, I haven't deployed the propellers and they aren't going to be as easy, Pudu and Parthia learned that the hard way when I blew the heck out of their fleets. They DO have the ability to 'dodge' torpedoes.
PS: And dreadnaught\Supership Rudders would have to be more lightly armed or it would be near impossible to move them effectively.

With the break off of the other two craft the third stealth flew in closer at around 46 miles it fired off the single Tomahawk in it's heavily modified Missile bay.
Of course detecting the launch the SAM systems quickly prepared to fire, and at around 35 miles they were prepared to hit the missile that is until the missile began to turn away from the island and drop one side of it's covering. With that radars were hit with the missle's effects. The missile lit up the radar screen with an untold amount of signals, thermal, Radio, the whole thing was a giant Neon Sign, swarming all detection systems.
Sure they could fire on it, but it would risk causing whatever it is to remain in the area.

The forces advanced at a rapid speed, with the majority of the force going a good 45mpr the whole trip and as they fell Vulcans covered the sky with shells. Partly because of this most of the Rockets that hit actually fell behind the main thrust of the attack, however what it did take out or disable the slower and heavier weaponry, as well as igniting their points of retreat.

::: North Duneria :::

The Lone Alliance's forces were moving far too quickly for Malone's tastes. The dense forests in the area had been largely torched, allowing them to travel faster than the Steelian forces that had gone through the area earlier; if they got too close, he could have a minor problem on his hands. His mind worked quickly. Confuse them.... draw them into a trap.

Then he smiled. Night was falling; the darkness would make the Steelians slightly more difficult to detect. He was counting on the Lone Alliance troops using night-vision goggles to navigate by darkness; after all, virtually everyone did. First, of course, there was the matter of slowing them down a bit. A quick message to Artillery Command dealt with that.

An instant later, 10" rocket-assisted shells began slamming down at a position calculated to be right in front of the Lone Alliance forces. Rockets from the MLRS units pounded the flanks; if a few troops or vehicles died, so much the better. Then, the nearby strike fighters let loose with a hundred or so thermobaric ASMs, distributed throughout the vanguard of the formation. While the explosives might not necessarily destroy tanks or other large vehicles, they would almost certainly kill the crews, rendering the vehicles quite useless. Small groups of special forces were also deployed out to the extreme end of sniping range, and upon arrival would begin taking potshots at nearby vehicles with handheld ATGMs or RPGs. (The special forces were transported there in a wide arc, staying well out of range of the enemy until they arrived.)

Meanwhile, back at the smoking ruins of Artenzzi -- which Malone had ordered turned into a fortified military camp for the Steelian forces -- a warm reception was being prepared for the Lone Alliance forces once they arrived. Very warm.

::: Pacifica :::

"They're trying to overload our sensors!"

"Shit! Shut 'em down!"

"But.... we'll be vulnerable to...."

"Shut 'em down!"

Half a dozen SAMs continued to fly heedlessly towards the modified Tomahawk, unerring in their course; Steelian SAMs are laser guided. A few more SAMs had been already targeted on the F-117, and they tracked it as best they could; but Steelian Command was not concerned with the bomber itself.

Meanwhile, under the sea, the thirty-two Steelian Hunter-Killer submarines waited. Occasionally moving a short distance on perfectly silent engines, angling to get into position to hit an enemy sub; but mostly, they watched and waited. Command knew well that the Lone Alliance was bound to deploy submarines wherever it fought. But no submarine would get close enough to Pacifica to do anything special. For the Hunters lay awake.

"Lieutenant, report."

"High Admiral, sir, the initial wave seems to have been a complete success. We have received no return fire and the target areas have been completely razed."

High Admiral Anor turned and glanced at Lord General Yataghan, who was gazing idly out the Betrayer of Hope's bridge window. "Very well, Lieutenant. Return to your post." The young officer saluted and hurried away, while Anor strode over to Yataghan. "Lord General, the enemy defenses in the area have been immobilized. Permission to begin the second phase of the bombardment?" Yataghan regarded him before answering crisply, "Granted. I want the area flattened, High Admiral. No mistakes. However, it looks like the Steelians are up to something in the Artenzzi area; hold fire there and ask them for confirmation. I don't want to attack our own allies." Anor nodded impatiently and turned away, issuing the necessary orders.

***

Again a volley of destruction tore out from the guns and launchers of the fleet; however, this one differed from the first. The warheads on roughly a third of the submarine-launched missiles had been changed, turning them from Pandemonium IIs into the Imperial trademark, the graphite missile. Six thousand of them, targeting Seattle, that when detonated would release a cloud of graphite filaments capable of knocking out the power across the entire city. The rest of the bombardment still targeted anything tagged as a military installation, or indeed anything remotely threatening nearby the projected landing areas.

Overhead, about 150 Lawgiver VTOL transports began ferrying Legionaries to the Dunerian coast, escorted by a pair of AH-166 gunships each and a formation of 960 F/A-104 Balefires. Under cover of a relentless bombardment of the enemy shore, the massive troop transports began lumbering forward to deposit the machines and warriors within onto Dunerian soil. The war was beginning in earnest, and the Kregaian war machine was drawing closer to its intended victim, jaws of steel opened wide.

::: The North Side of Pacifica :::

::: Duneria :::

Three 15 man team's of Dune Demolitions squad split up. Heading towards the artellery positions. They came across a machine of destruction heading towards the Lone Alliance.

"Looks like we have a chance." whispered Gersham.
"Yeah, let's hope we can do some damage.." replied Dark.

Flanking the artellery positions. The men crouched low and readied their smoke grenades. On their belts were Tsuka Bomb's. Tsuka bomb's were highly destructive devices that, when detonated, could turn a city block into a fireball.

The team's seperated into a pincer movement, and threw their grenades at the target's. The confused guards started firing rapidly into the smoke cloud that was enveloping the position. 10 soldier's armed with snipers began picking off guards while the rest deployed their charges. The Steel and Fire guards however had luck on their side, and by the time the Demolition teams finished their job, almost 2/3'ds of the team were killed. Escaping the Tracer fire, coming after them, Gersham noticed that of the 45 that had attacked the artellery, only five were remaining

Including him.

"What do we do know?" asked a soldier.

Gersham grabbed the detonator and pushed the button.

"We run."

Most of the Missiles never made it to the shore, In area's around Seattle,
SFZ6 Anti-Missile system's locked onto the incoming missiles, and blew them out of the sky. Some EMP missiles however, managed to hit some area's of the city. Blacking out only a few military installation's, the Warmaster's army soon found itself facing a formidable and deadly foe.

Soon, enemy forces found themselves being fired upon by Heavy Machinegun and rocket fire, entrenched in pillboxes and trenches. Armed with M60's, Dunerian P453 Rocket launcher's, Chainswords, and AK-110's, the soldier's roared at the enemy.

From afar, massive artillery formations, lobbed death at The Warmaster's forces with suprising accuracy. Most of the artillery was MLBRS system's, but some were 30 inch artillery pieces, capable of throwing projectiles great distances.

Approaching the beach and coming into contact with enemy forces, were 14 companies of Tanks (T-90 and T-100), 29 companies of infantry, and 39 companies of the dreaded Red Sword shocktroopers. The shocktroopers, were armed with a auto-pistol, a chainsword, and dozens of tsuka bombs.
Flying as aircover, were 200 MIG 51's and 1000 MI-28's.

The Mig 51's, were armed with the most high-tech of Air-Air weapon system's and an unrivaled speed and agility advantage.

In the city itself, were over 6 Million defenders and 50 Warrior2/mech platoons, armed with both long distance and close combat gear.

In the water, the Dunerian 3,4,6, and 10th Submarine Dragoons, began firing guided torpedoes toward Warmaster ships, submarines and landing craft.

For both sides, this battle was going to be a bloodbath

::: An Example of Steelian Military Conversation :::

"Who's that?"

"Some idiots.... Hoi! You there! Get your sorry asses back where you came from, this is a military installaaaaaaaaaahhhhwhump." (dies)

(shocked) "They killed Jim! FIRE AT WILL!"

"What the fuck, I can't see three inches in front of my nose!"

"Smoke grenades, the dirty bastards. Quick, keep a tight cordon around the arty pieces!"

"Yes sir! On the double sir! Aaagh, one of the fuckers shot me, I need a medic!"

"Got one! Take that, and that!"

"Keep your guns in play, you worthless cocktards! Maintain a constant rain of bullets, it's the only way to get them to avoid the area. Corporal Samson, execute a pincer. Milt, we need tracers!"

"How can they see and we can't?"

"They were more prepared, I guess.... Hey! Looks like they're planting something!"

"Mines?"

"Bombs of some kind, looks like.... I'll just start tossing them away, we don't have time for a bomb control squad."

"They've gone. Did we get 'em all?"

"Don't think so. Keep looking for bombs, they were trying to plant them."

(Around then, the Dunerian special forces hit the Big Red Button.)

A little under half the bombs had been tossed back into the trees towards the Dunerians (and their Cazelian allies) themselves. But the remainder was quite enough. A mighty boom, a series of fireballs, and five more 6" howitzers—plus their crews—were no more. The Dunerians and Cazelians would run into more trouble, however; at least, those who escaped their own bombs would. Patrolling the area were HARE units, perhaps the deadliest and best-trained in the Steelian military; and a fireteam of eight HAREs—almost indistinguishable from the undergrowth in which they hid—had encountered, and was stalking, the survivors.

Every now and then a sniper rifle shot would come from an unpredictable angle, picking off one of the running soldiers neatly. They were almost invariably headshots; occasionally they pierced the neck or shoulders. Once or twice sniper shots came from in front, striking the stomach or forehead; the fireteam was doing its own job, to lead the enemy back towards Artenzzi where it would be caught in the open between two divisions of the Steelian Army. Preferably, they would be taken prisoner, and made an example of.

Technically, torture was illegal in Steel and Fire. But this was Duneria....

2. The reason for so much resistance is because at the moment, Seattle is one of the most heavily defended areas in the country
3. My submarines are armed with advance countermeasures and cruise missiles

OOC: OOC stuff first. The Warmaster is a name I made up for this nation a few years ago because I couldn't think of a better one. It's the title of the first ruler of my nation, Typhon the Warmaster. Secondly, makes sense; I wish you'd let me know beforehand (I assumed the defenses in the area were nonexistent or had been destroyed), but I'll take what you gave me. Thirdly, okay. But my ground forces have NOT landed yet, and the graphite missiles were targeting the civilian areas of Seattle. Has it been evacuated?

IC: "Fuck! Contacts!"

The shout brought both the High Admiral and Lord General Yataghan running over to the tactical display. Dunerian forces were finally deploying; hundreds of planes, supporting a sizable contingent of troops on the ground. Artillery was coming into play as well, from 30-inch guns on down.

"Sir! Torpedoes!" High Admiral Anor saw them as soon as they appeared on the tactical display: a series of torpedoes headed towards the Imperial fleet. Wasting no time, he shouted, "Countermeasures, now! Take them out, then the submarines!"

***

Across the fleet, decoys to draw off the torpedoes were launched, followed by a blistering array of counter-torpedoes, blowing almost all of the Dunerian contacts out of the water. However, a few slipped through, destroying three frigates and a destroyer. The rest of the ships concentrated on blasting apart the enemy artillery shells; given the thousands of planes helping to augment the ships' own CIWS systems, it was not very surprising that only one slipped through, causing crippling damage to a cruiser. And then the fleet responded.

First, hundreds of supercavitating torpedoes, moving blisteringly fast compared to normal torpedoes, streaked from their launchers towards the Dunerian subs. Despite the Dunerian stealth systems, it was quite obvious where the subs were, given that the Kregaians knew where the torpedoes had launched from. At the same time, over a hundred helicopters converged on the area were the subs were, dropping depth charges in a wide spread, in case the subs had moved from their original positions.

Next, the Kregaian aircraft radioed for reinforcements, given that they were now outnumbered. The VTOL transports landed on the beaches, disgorging heavily armed Legionaries while laying cover fire with their 12.7mm chainguns. After dropping off the troops, they soared away, while above them, their Balefire escorts hurled themselves at the enemy. Launching a withering salvo of AAMs, totaling almost eight thousand missiles, and following up by accelerating to maximum speed (almost Mach 3), while blazing away with 30mm chainguns, hurling bullets at the enemy planes. Back over the fleet, an additional 1,200 Balefires followed the same tactic, launching missiles at the enemy as soon as they were in range (making well over sixteen thousand Kregaian missiles targeting the Dunerian aircraft), then immediately accelerating while opening fire with chainguns. Finally, two hundred Behemoth heavy bombers, each escorted by a dozen Balefires, soared at fifty thousand feet over the Dunerian anti-air emplacements, releasing a total of four hundred MOABs and no less than two thousand HARM missiles which streaked with deadly purpose towards the enemy air defenses.

The fleet continued its bombardment, hurling thousands of shells and tens of thousands of missiles towards the enemy artillery positions and entrenchments, showering the Dunerian troops with a storm of deadly firepower. On the ground, the Legionaries advanced under cover of the thunderous bombardment, already having lost hundreds of men to the Dunerian defenders, but still dispassionately advancing, firing away, while above the AH-166 gunships launched a total of six hundred missiles at the enemy entrenchments, using their chainguns to attack any armored vehicles in range. And all the while the lumbering troop transports drew closer...

"Mother Fucker! I've had it with these goddamn bombardments. Dunerian's, Fight HARDER!!!!!!!!" roared Captain Richards.
All around him, the Warmaster's bombardment blasted into the Dunerian lines. Crater's were created in a dust of dirt and body parts, a cascade of brown and red.
In the air, the MI-28's, engaged the Troop carrier's. The helicopter's fired thousand's of armor piercing rounds and hundred's of explosive rocket's into the troop carrier's bodies.

Also engaing enemy forces were the Quad Platforms. Finally reaching their destination, the trucks fired hundreds of armor piercing flak rounds into the metalic bodies of the Warmater's gunship's.

Richards intercom picked up.

"P- ou- wer- s- in- red- sw-------"

Looking behind him, Richards understood.

Marching towards the enemy, were the 39 companies of the Red Swords. Armed with there usual weaponry, the Red Swords were additionaly armed with Small-Arms-Detterent shields. Their march began to turn into a charge and their quiet faces into a roar.
Enemy fire punched holes in their ranks, but still they came.
Soon the lines met, and then came the arcs of blood from chainswords and explosions from Tsuka bombs.
Soon the roar of chainswords became louder than the noise of war.

The Submarines retreated to safer territory (after losing a dozen of their number) , there they lauched 500 cruise missiles( high damage type) at the warmaster's fleet.

High overhead, 75 heavy-class bombers dropped hundreds of high explosive bombs on the enemy fleet.

Hell had come, and it wasn't going to be friendly for The Warmaster.

The Advance scout force, led by Master Sergent James T Johnson, had made good progress. With the Bikes and buggies designed to go over rough ground like it was smooth pavement, they were making excellent time. Still they were still at least 14 miles from the Steel and Fire forces, and night was falling. Johnson wasn't afraid however, the night was their times to shine.

"Bike 7 Tighten up then move to point 12 on Formation delta." Johnson said, speaking through a microphone over the roar of the Buggy he was riding in." As his pilot jerked past a large tree stump he continued, "Divide into 3 groups, I want the Rockets to the left, Bikes 3 and 5 and Buggies 2 and 5, you are to escort them to Point 11N 8E of Checkpoint Bravo." He looked over a map of deployments, "Two platoons will meet up with you there, providing that they survived the previous attack." The previous attack, everyone saw it, they saw both of them infact, The first that leveled out their rear guard, and the second that would have hit them had they remained on their orginal course. Luckly for Johnson and his group the enemy had forgotten that in the mountains you cannot go in a straight line. The explosives fell upon empty land, the guns themselves soon fell silent as the Duneria special force troops attacked and severely damaged the artillery site.

-Alaska-
A wing of around 30 F-23s and 20 F-22s were arleady in the air by the time the last planes launched. This was soon followed by around 15 A-10s and 2 F-15s. On board the F-22\23s were AA weaponry, While the F-15 was prepared to drop flechette bombs over the enemy positions.

"Come on you scum, You want the Lone Alliance to get to the fight first!" roared Comissar Tibelt."
The Soldier's around the commissar roared their approval, as they continued northward towards the Steelian positions.
The Commissar sat back down into his tank, leering at the several driver's of his Dune super-heavy tank.

"Well," he hissed, "What the hell are you looking at!"

The driver's looked away, shuddering.
Shuddering at a nightmare.
The Commissar was not the man he once was. Instead of his normal attire, the Commissar was adorned with tubes, running from his spine into his head and chest. His face was a leering mask of flesh, stripped of skin his face was crissed crossed with scars and inserted with stitches.
The most horrifying was his hands.
Cut off, they seemed to be infected with a foreign germ, leaking a infected green substance every few seconds. His hands, which were replaced with metal claws, seemed to be the only thing stopping the flow of the putrid material.

Under the Comissar's command, were 3 million of Duneria's evil. Convict's, killers, and just plain psychotic wierdo's. All mounted on Speeder-bikes.
The Bikes were armed with rocket lauchers and Anti-personel machineguns.

“I am the scourge of God. Had you not created great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.”
-Genghis Khan

The gunships, circling and striking like vultures above the Dunerians, suddenly came under fire from enemy AA vehicles; however, taking evasive maneuvers even as dozens of their friends and fellow pilots dropped in flaming wrecks from the sky, they gave as good as they got, launching air-to-surface missiles to take out the enemy Quad Platforms and opening fire with their 30mm chainguns.

As the Dunerians charged, the Legionaries ceased their advance; spreading out, the thousands of troops opened fire with their assault rifles, sending short bursts of armor-piercing rounds tearing into the enemy as they charged, followed up by 40mm grenades from the grenade launchers mounted on the Legionaries’ guns. However, they kept coming, and eventually the Legionaries were forced to draw combat knives; a toy compared to the chainswords of the Dunerians, and soon the roar of the enemy weapons marked the slashes that tore through limbs and necks and bodies, buzzing horribly through bone…the Legionaries fought like tigers, but the enemy was frenzied and kept on coming, driving them back.

The fleet, meanwhile, was continuing its deadly barrage of missiles and shells, when suddenly, hundreds of missiles erupted from beneath the surface of the ocean. At once, the defense systems on the fleet’s ships roared into action, sending first waves of powerful mass-interception missiles, followed by a storm of flak, and finally, for those missiles surviving, a solid wall of bullets, courtesy of the Imperial CIWS systems. The planes nearby helped as well, using guns and missiles to intercept some of the enemy cruise missiles; however, a small percentage still got through, sinking several ships, including two battleships. However, the Imperial fleet responded viciously, launching hundreds of torpedoes into the area where the missiles originated from, and sending helicopters (carrying magnetic sensors to find the submarines) into the area, which launched more torpedoes as soon as a sub showed up on their sensors. Finally, a detachment of twelve attack submarines were sent to patrol and hunt down any survivors.

The troop carriers, on the other hand, were largely on their own at first. Being lightly armed, they were mostly unable to intercept the enemy missiles, and had a very limited ability to strike back at the MI-28s. However, the ships were far too big for helicopter-mounted missiles to do serious damage; only when multiple missiles hit the same spot could the armor be breached. Unfortunately, the Dunerians rapidly figured this out, and several of the massive transports began taking on water, holes having been blasted in their hulls. However, in response, no less than 3,600 Balefires were sent to take out the enemy helicopters; locking on with MRAAMs, they attacked ferociously, sending over twenty thousand missiles rocketing towards the Dunerian MI-28s, followed up with a deadly storm of 30mm fire.

Below, the first few transports reached their destinations. Doors swinging open wide into the shallows, squads of Legionaries sprinted out, wading through the waters of the Pacific to shore, as Despoiler MBTs followed, laying down covering fire with their 125mm main cannons and 25mm chainguns. The armies of the Imperium drove towards their target beaches while the fleet's missiles screamed by overhead. The war had truly begun.

"SNIPERS!" Johnson shouted as they fell into the midists of the Steel and Fire flanking unit. He had called it seconds after a sniper bullet had shot past him to slam into the driver of another buggy, flipping the vehicle, gunner and all. ATGMs began to try and shoot down the vehicles as the S&F special forces began their ambush. "TAKE THOSE MFERS DOWN!" Johnson shouted as he began to lay supressing fire upon a RPG position. The Attack bikes turned rapidly, using their speed to dodge some of the missile and attempt to fire missiles of their own, still the amount of explosives flying through the area still managed to hit one or two, one causing a massive explosion when it hit the Rocket storage of the bike. Still, with heavy supressing fire from the 7.62 and .50 machineguns, and shrapnel raining down from rockets, the S&F forces were to find out that they were being surrounded.

-Main Force-
"INCOMING FIGHTERS!" came the cry as the Steelian Fighters approached from the southwest. Like the scouting group, the main force had to divert their course as well, and while this meant they dodged most of the MLRS fire, it still meant that the fighters could simply change their course once they spotted the group. "Defensive positions, AA units get yourself together!" General Paul Morrow shouted, "We have 3 minutes to hold them off until our air support Arrives, I want everyone ready!" Of course by the time he was finished the 40mm Bofors were already manned, and the Avenger APCs had their Stingers already ready for firing. The M42s had already pulled into a circle around the supply vehicles, and Hand Held SAM missiles were being rapidly unpacked.

-Over North Duneria Border-
# Base to Nitro Wing, we've confirmed Bandits preparing a bombardment upon our attacking force, search and destroy.#
#Roger that, this is Nitro wing, we are ready to engage.#
#Good luck Nitro.#
With that the wing of 30 F-23s headed south towards the enemy.

-Middle of Alaska-
His name was Sergeyev Mikhailov, but everyone called him General Winter. He sighed as he looked over his forces, disappointed that he was ordered to wait. However the commands he was given had allowed him to at least give the enemy a little gift. From the center of a nearby field 2 dozen Scud missile launchers were deployed in firing position, in the past a rogue terrorist group had realized that the weakness of scuds was that many could be interecepted by enemy missile defenses, the best way this could be countered was to simply swarm the defenses with so many scuds that they could not shoot all of them down. This "Scud Storm" was a useful idea, but placing it as a structure design simply made it a large target for enemy attack.

Mikhailov had a different way, By combining his Scud force by link up he could achieve the same effect, and it was with a push of a button. Missile after missile lifted off towards the S&F base camp, their cargo was something that only one obsessed with cold could have dreampt up, the missiles would carry no heat signal... Because they were all filled with Liquid Nitrogen.

-TLA Military Command-
"Things are grim Ladies and gentlemen," came the briefer, "The Dunerian front is collapsing, and Cazelia... is all but lost, however, our allies have not given up yet, we still survive. I fear that it had come the time to escalate the stakes though."
"Activate the Templars," came a voice from one side. "Yes sir, we have a battlion stored up there at this moment, it shouldn't take more than a hour and a half."

BEACH BETA 5678/ AREA 9:
"Shit, they're coming towards our positions!"
"Artillery, commence bombardment, NOW!"
"Where's our ground support?!?!"
"AFGGGHHH! I'm hit!"
"Johnny? Oh Jesus Christ JOHNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!"
Those were the sounds coming from the trenches, as the Warmaster's forces, which came fresh from the landing craft, came En-Masse towards the Dunerian Positions. Officer's and soldier's alike went scrambling for their weapons as the horde drew nearer.
As the Warmaster's forces drew nearer, the Dunerian's entrenched themselves along the trenches line. Over a hundred soldier's were armed with M60's and other heavy machineguns, while hundreds more were armed with Armor piercing RPG's

An Officer, with binoculers sighted the enemy.
As soon as the Legionaries and their support came into range, the Officer dropped his hand.
The entire line roared as the heavy machine gun teams opened fire upon the advancing troops, while the RPG teams fired rounds into the weak points of the Despoiler MBT's.*
Even with that sort of punishment, the Warmaster's forces still continued on. The Officer gave another signal. Soon 300 Soldiers with XP-40 Flamethrower's advanced to the trenches.
Occasionally, fire from the advancing enemy, killed off some Dunerian's that were exposed to fire.
As soon as the advancing enemy was 20 paces from the positions the officer, opened his intercom.
"Alright Boy's! Nail em!'"
300 tongues of fire decended upon the Legionaries, filling the pit before the trench with charred bodies and screaming enemies.* even the MBT's were consumed, before being attacked by RPG units.*
The remaining Horde closed on the trenches with a roar, and the Dunerian units armed with Chainswords and close comat weapons rushed to meet them.
Soon the air stank of the dead and the wounded.

IN THE AIR
Across stations in Duneria, SAM sites launched over a thousand missiles at the Warmaster's air force.* 30 seconds after the volley, 2000 fighter/interceptors with 400 bomber's entered seattle airspace. The fighter's consisted of MIG 51's and MIG 21VE/45's, some of the Best fighter's in the airforce. The Bomber's were assorted, but had Automatic-Chaingun retrofits (as defence and countermeasure) and were individually armed with hundreds of high-explosive bombs.
All this and a nasty suprise too.

*Warmaster, you calculate the damage and RP it.

With the soldiers and other personnel in such tight quarters, rumors spread faster than orders. By the time the fleet was officially ordered to sea, it was already on it's way.

Despite being of the ostensible purpose of landing troops to held Duneria, the fleet was balanced to fighting the war at sea, ready to punch throught The Warmasterian[sic] sea-lines.

Twelve squadrons of Mojave class stealth cruisers had been on constant patrol around the staging point and would be the first ships to the combat area, arriving almost a full day before the main force of the fleet. With any luck, the vessels stealthy profile would allow them to arrive unseen to carry out harassing, using decoys and other tricks to force the enemy fleet to chase shadows while carrying out hit and run missile attacks.

"Just die already!" Johnson shouted towards where the Steelians were STILL shooting from as he grabbed something from behind his seat. "Let's see how you like this." He muttered hefting the M202A1 Flash from the storage compartment. "Suck it down!" He shouted, 4 Huge flashes of fire appeared as he fired 4 rockets into some of the suspected sniper positions. With a temperature of over 1400 degrees whoever is behind those positions is going to be melting soon, and hopefully the remaining will retreat rather than face the same fate.

40 More sucide subs rose to proceed to attack the Prophet-class carriers.

These sucide subs were different than the previous, aside from having higher evasive movement with multiple engines on all sides of it. Their explosive was a large quanity of C12 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11784861&postcount=491). Whatever ship this hit wouldn't stand a chance, even a miss could cause a shockwave large enough to inflict damage. Warmaster was about to find out that there is more than one way to master a war, in more than one way...

"Units 1 to 600 are green." A scientist said going over the huge screen.
"So are 600 to 1200, wait we have 2 showing errors," Pull them out and deploy the rest." Came a voice. "Yes Sir." She said pressing a button.

-Storage Hanger-
With a low beep the lights of a pair of large hanger like rooms turned on and the doors to the outside slowly opened... and they stepped out sliently, one after another, eyes ahead unblinking, one normal, the other a glowing red, an Army of none. The templars had been activated, and there was going to be hell to pay.

5:30 am

The horde of evil attacked.
The 3 million under Tibelt's command split into 40 different attack groups, each with enough firepower to secure locations that even the Dunerian Red Hands would find difficult to capture.
Whooping and roaring, the convict's raced towards the Steelian positions on their bikes.

Steelian sentries, suddenly spotting the Biker's, fired withering salvo's of small arms fire at the approaching Dunerian's. Hundreds of convicts died, as Steelian sharpshooter's picked them off. The Dunerian's closed the gap however, and began the horrifying slaughter.
Armor piercing rounds penetrated the tents of sleeping soldier's (The ones who hadn't been already woken up by alarms and gunfire), convicts with chainswords slied open Steelian's, and Tsuka bombs were thrown at Ammo depots and fuel dumps.

Overseeing the destruction was Tibelt, watching via satellite feed.
"heeheheheheheehe!!!" he cackled, "those Steelian fucks are learning the first thing about my army, they don't care about money or their country...."
"All they want is what I want......Fresh blooooooood! HAHAHAHAAHA!!!!!"

A worried soldier walked over to Tibelt.
"What.... IS IT!" Tibelt roared.
The soldier yelped.
"um...um...ahhh... sir.... um.. we have just recieved reports that the Lone Alliance has deployed a new unit...."

Although Tibelt's face was a mask, the soldier could still detect a smile forming under the Commissar's grizzled features.
"WELL, WELL!" the Commissar roared jubilantly. Lets see what our allies have..."
Thumbing the activation button on the sattelite feed, Tibelt watched the screen of the computer, as it fizzled with static.
Watching the screen, he saw a video montage of some sort of wierd super soldier.
"What the hell...." Tibelt breathed.

In all of warfare, there is nothing quite so murderous as an assault on a fortified beach. It's nothing less than a meatgrinder on a terrific scale, and the best the attacker can do to prevent slaughter among his troops is blast the enemy to pieces from afar, in a hail of explosions that hurl intestines and limbs and shredded corpses across the beach. Maybe this is why the Imperial Legions enjoy it so much: amongst the blood of the dead and the roar of gunfire, a murderer is always at home.

The Legionaries advanced, crouching to minimize their profile and running across the open sands. Raising their assault rifles to their shoulders, they took aim at any Dunerian foolish enough to pop his head up from the trenches and opened fire, spraying bursts of armor-piercing rounds at the infidels, punctuating the bullets with volleys of 40mm grenades fired from the launchers mounted beneath their gun barrels.

However, the enemy was far from defenseless. Counter-fire streamed from the trenches, tearing through armor and flesh as the Legionaries charged. Before long, artillery rounds began to land too, hurling sand into the air as they detonated, spraying Kregaian blood across the beach. Howls of rage tore from the throats of their comrades, screaming prayers to the Seven True Gods as they drew yet nearer. The tanks attacked viciously, storms of 25mm chaingun fire erupting from their turrets, punctuated every few seconds by the roar of another 125mm shell rocketing towards the entrenched enemy. However, despite the tanks' advanced defense systems, a number of RPGs got through, coming up against the Despoilers' thick armor. Practically all of the frontal attacks failed, but those directed at the sides were more successful, taking out more than a dozen of the machines in an eruption of fire. The ships, meanwhile, continued to disgorge tanks and warriors, like bloated beasts vomiting filth onto the Dunerian shores.

At last the Legionaries reached the trenches; however, they were met by streams of ignited gas, courtesy of hundreds of enemy flamethrowers among their ranks. Agonized screams rent the air as the comrades of those burnt and burning responded by opening fire on a massive scale on those who had dared to wield such weapons against the warriors of the Imperium. But shortly afterward, the front lines of the charging Kregaians reached the Dunerian trenches, and the battle was joined.

However, the attackers weren't foolish enough to jump into the trenches and start fighting hand-to-hand; they'd heard the radio traffic from down the beach, where the Legionaries were being carved apart by chainswords. No, instead, they dropped frag grenades into the trenches and followed up with bursts of 6.7mm AP rounds and more 40mm grenades. Whenever a Dunerian tried to raise his chainsword and charge, he was met with a hail of gunfire, and the Dunerians' position in the trenches now left them vulnerable, faced with foes who rained fire down on them from above and sent grenades and tank shells streaking amongst them.

In the air, the battle continued. Swarms of Balefires screamed through the air, twisting through maneuvers that few other aircraft were capable of; however, a new threat was arriving in the form of a thousand Dunerian SAMs. Those who were targeted were informed of it by their craft's sensors, and immediately took action. Those who could turned while it was still more than ten seconds away and launched missiles to counter it; however, some pilots were too hard-pressed by the Dunerian defenders to disengage, and so were forced to simply continue their maneuvering, releasing chaff and flares as well as activating their ECM packages to scramble the enemy targeting system. However, despite these measures, more than 80 planes were shot down. And meanwhile, miles away over Seattle, a Dunerian air armada was assembling for an attack...

***

The Imperial ships' sensors lit up as more of the enemy suicide subs deployed. Making the most of precious seconds before the impact, the Stalker-class attack subs in the area, as well as the torpedo systems on the other nearby HVUs, launched a withering barrage of guided torpedoes to take out the enemy.

A lone weather satellite passed in low orbit, soon to be overheard of the ongoing battle. Although unseen, an encrypted radio transmission emanating from a bunker, neatly hidden amongst the industrial outskirts of Veracruz. Upon receiving the instructions, a small protrusion poked out of a hole – a secondary camera. Though this camera was not for tracking hurricanes or cloud patterns, but rather looking over whatever the Ministry of Intelligence wanted…

Outside Veracruz, México, ANL

A large flat screen buzzed to life as the first bits of data began pour through from the satellite. A series of high-resolution pictures flashed on the screen as the satellite began to test its abilities and reset its focus. Although the ANL didn’t want to get in the middle of the war, it was well worth the risk. Information was amongst the more important commodities in any situation. Victor Tonhuac, the Minister of Intelligence and State Security looked at the screen, although seemingly emotionless, he felt rather tense about the situation.

An aide walked into the artificially lit room and noticed Tonhuac. He interrupted Tonhuac’s train of thought, something he didn’t want to do. Sharply, Victor asked, “What do you need?”

The aide said quickly, “There are some new orders directly from Tenochitilán and a communiqué from Nochtli.”

Quickly, Tonhuac snatched it and read it. Although he understood that his orders were to be expected, he always hated intelligence sharing. But as usual, the movers and shakers of the ANL were never slow to get involved in a war…

The subs diverted their course, while the majority headed for the carriers, some tried to head for transports and destroyers, still a handful attempted to become bait for the incoming torpedoes the goal of a Sucide sub is not to sink a ship, but to disable or make it helpless. In the case of the carriers, the destruction of their engine rooms or power, as well as a large enough hole to cause a list, would make it useless in battle. Useless ships caused logistic problems as they had to be either guarded against further attack, repaired and towed, which took up useful ships, or scuttled, which took time and hurt morale.

::: Artenzzi, North Duneria. Some six days and four hours after start of Operation: Muskrat. :::

The Steelians were under siege.

Malone knew it and he was quite irritated by it. The 33rd had taken the city, fair and square; it had left a trail of blazing destruction in its wake, leaving most of North Duneria devoid of anything useful. Now it was holed up here; while it was technically possible for Malone to lead his forces southwards towards the Kregaian breach, it was undesirable and probably unnecessary. And while it was technically possible for Malone to go north and invade Lone Alliance Alaska, there was this pesky contingent of Lone Alliance forces making its way towards his position. Every few hours brought a new report from the front.

"Losing contact with northernmost positions."

"Snipers report lack of deterrence to Lone Alliance advance."

"Bogeys engaged at 30 km from Alpha Base."

"Missiles incoming, no recogniseable IR signature, launching surface to air missiles to intercept."

And so on. Even now Malone was reading over the most worrying report, of a Dunerian army massing to his south. His face was gaunt and unkempt as he turned it to the aide who had brought in the report. "Numerically, how strong is this army, subaltern?" Malone asked.

"Preliminary estimates indicate two or three million men, sir."

"How about vehicles?"

"Pardon? Uh.... we've picked out one definite...."

"One?"

"Affirmative, sir. It looks to be a heavy battle tank."

"And the rest are foot soldiers?"

"Well, not exactly, sir. Take a look at these satellite photos."

Malone looked. "If I didn't know better, I'd say they were riding motorbikes," he commented. "They're definitely moving too fast to be walking.... are those horses, perhaps?"

The subaltern stifled the urge to say, "Well, knowing Duneria, I wouldn't be surprised." He also stifled the urge to say anything else and as a result was silent.

Malone looked up sharply at the subaltern. "They're irregulars!" he said. "Civilians with guns. This isn't a 'real' army."

"Sir?"

"Get me comms to Marshal Lubeck."

"Yes, sir."

Half an hour later the seventy-two strategic bombers of the 141st Strategic Bomber Wing, escorted by two hundred ASF-31 Air Superiority Fighters, were swiftly slowing to just under Mach .4 as about sixteen thousand metric tons of assorted anti-personnel ordnance dropped smoothly from their bomb bays onto the advancing "horde". Meanwhile, adrenaline racing through their veins, hundreds of Steelian soldiers began to take their positions at pillboxes, barricades, machine gun nests and the like; several lines of defence faced the wildly charging army, or whatever was left of it after the bombers had done their work.

First, the fences. Ten feet high, electrified and topped with barbed wire and spikes, they were a good reason to have brought more tanks along. Any bikers who got the foolish idea of running right over the fence would be fried to a crisp; a large number of holes would need to be blasted in the fence to allow the bikers to pass through in numbers sufficient to avoid being picked off one by one by the heavy machinegunners and mortars, whose range they had just entered.

From there on the horde would barrel through "no man's land". The liquidated wreckage of southern Artenzzi had formed a fine pulverised dust that covered everything; there were still quantities of smoke in the air, or maybe the Steelians had planted smoke grenades, but either way it was difficult to see. The first line on no man's land was a minefield; second, the trench of fire; third, the outermost Steelian positions themselves. Therefore, throughout the horde's charge through the smoke-filled and fiery no man's land they would be inundated by bullets and mortar rounds; and it was deemed unlikely that very many of the horde would survive the trench of fire, which was about fifteen feet deep and fifteen wide and filled with burning oil. Flames danced ten feet into the air; anyone who attempted to clear it would be instantly immolated. The horde would only have margins of success at the ends of the trench, and on either side they would enter completely unrelated areas; the horde would enter trackless forest a mile or more from the intended location, and be guided away from Artenzzi thanks to Steelian fireteams deployed to snipe at them.

Even as the battle raged on the south side of Artenzzi, Malone was setting up similar defences on the north -- facing the Lone Alliance forces. He was employing an age-old favourite principle of Sun Tzu. Defend, then attack.

::: Arcadia, Steel and Fire :::

"So..... the Lone Alliance is attacking us too..... interesting." Chalabi Jones sounded extremely bored. He stared at the Council of Twelve and they stared back, apart from General Milena La Grenouille, who was leading the presentation.

"As you can see," La Grenouille said, "so far we have yet to engage them on a major level. Apart from a few aerial furballs and the odd encounter with scouting squads, and due exchange of missiles and artillery, we have not yet moved to destroy them."

Jones stared hard at General Romulus A. Hauptmann, oldest and most senior member of the Council. "Major Malone is under your command, General, is he not?"

"That 'e is, me boy," Hauptmann rasped. "Says 'e's gonna defend what 'e's got, then once the Lonies are KO'd 'e's gonna march right in thar, apply boot to (cough) posteerer end, in 'is own words."

"General. You think we should soften the Lone Alliance's 'posteerer end' up for Malone's boot?" Jones asked, watching the older man's face carefully.

"Yup, that's igzacktly what I was thinkin'," Hauptmann said. "Wars these days ain't fought by men, they're fought by computers, an' I knows a few folks what like as jump to it if we offer 'em a fat 'nuff check. Plus, I got a couple subs out in the Ar'tic Sea what wouldn't mind a spot of action oncet in a spell."

"Quite so!" Jones smiled. "Let's show the world how to really annihilate a nation."

La Grenouille was the first to react. "Annihilate? Mr. Jones, is that really necessary?"

Jones pondered for a moment, then sighed regretfully. "Well.... no, not really. But we can teach them a good lesson they won't be likely to forget!" His face brightened again.

"Well, if y'all would excuse me, I've got a few phone calls t'make," Hauptmann said, standing with a suppressed groan (like many old men he suffered from arthritis and weakened bones).

Jones smiled almost benevolently. "Thank you, General. I knew we could depend on you. Now, about the Lone Alliance's anti-ballistic missile shield...."

::: Bridgetown, Steel and Fire :::

Juan Aldorigo's apartment was not the picture of opulence. He had little furniture, almost no wall ornaments, and what he did have was generally spartan and uncolourful. The only indications of his wealth, on the outside, were the, not one, but two war surplus M1A1 Nakíls in his garage, purchased from a rather questionable dealer in Allanea, and the secondhand ACI-73 Aquila he kept down at the local airfield -- which even secondhand came to a significant sum, probably worth more than the apartment building in which he lived.

Three years ago, Aldorigo had been just another penniless unemployed bum, a dropout from Bridgetown Tech. Then he had been approached by a nondescript young man who offered him the chance to do some computer work for the government. He complied readily and found that his line of work produced money beyond his wildest dreams -- a single job could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, or millions. With the money he had bought a small grocery store and rented an apartment upstairs. Now, he was rich.

His private pager was beeping. He picked it from his belt and looked at it, and he smiled. Another job. Logging onto his email, he indicated his agreement and began to prepare for what he had to do. It was technically illegal; but if Aldorigo or his cronies were ever arrested for it, the government would find some reason to release them. He was valuable to Arcadia and he knew it.

::: Lone Alliance Alaska :::

At 4:25 AM Alaska time -- 8:25 in Steel and Fire -- every major government and military installation was suddenly attacked by unknown invaders.

Aldorigo's botnet included literally billions of computers scattered everywhere across the planet, a significant portion of which were from within The Lone Alliance itself. His legions of 'script kiddies' were doing just that, running their simple automated scripts, which acted the same way as the zombies in the botnet: they bombarded the Lone Alliance servers with lots of useless information.

The first wave increased bandwidth traffic almost 170-fold. The second wave tripled that. By the third wave, most servers were down altogether, and even the most stalwart military installations were hovering on the critical red line. The giant bunched its muscles, heaving aloft a fourth wave; at this point, even the military servers would be down. Which meant no satellite information, no detection, and no defense: the ABM system would be incapable of functioning until the warheads came into visual range, with no computers available to target them.

By now the Steelian plan should have been obvious: A pair of SSBNs deployed sixty medium-yield nuclear missiles from the Arctic Ocean, then vanished once more beneath the waves. Rather than touching down on Alaskan territory, however, the missiles exploded in the air, creating a powerful electromagnetic pulse that would cripple almost any electronics within the borders of Alaska. Subsequently, with no further computers to attack, Juan Aldorigo laid off the assault and found himself eight million dollars wealthier; he smiled, as he had always wanted his own powered armour suit.

One of the reasons Steel and Fire preferred the distributed denial of service attack was because it was one of the few weapons against which it is almost impossible to defend. One can kill soldiers, shoot down missiles and shells, fire sonic bursts to deflect orbital projectiles; but short of cutting off the nation's computer system from the rest of the world's, one cannot prevent DDoS. And if the enemy can be taken by surprise, there is almost no means by which the attack can be completely countered, short of cutting off all outside traffic to a server; which would leave the Lone Alliance just as defenceless, as military installations would still have no access to their satellites.

In short, Malone was now free to apply boot to posterior end without meeting any nasty surprises, or so the Council thought. Nonetheless, Malone was more cautious about it. No matter how many vehicles and aeroplanes had been incapacitated by electrical fires, he had a feeling that the Lone Alliance was keeping something up its sleeve.

Meanwhile, back in the depths of a bunker in Arcadia, Intel was working hard at making sure TLA -- or its allies -- didn't contract out a hacker to attack S&F the same way Alaska had suffered. Already the great firewalls of Steel and Fire were being activated, cutting the nation -- and its satellites -- off from outside connections. DDoS is a double-edged sword.

OOC: Ah ah ah, you under estimate TLA and their computers.

-Lone Alliance Alaska-
TLA wasn't a nation that would be defeated by mere hackers, The counterstrike was quick against the DDOS, as soon as traffic began high enough to shutdown the bait server TLA severed connections with all outside influences. Communication satelites shutdown, Net connections were severed, and even towers deactivated. With this done they instuted a loopback command to stall against further attacks. The military began the long process to reactivate the Satelites in what was known as Tactical isolation mode. The ones in Alaska reactivated just before the EMP blast hit. But it was enough time so just before the EMP hit... Alaska turned off. Completely, and utterly, Vehicles and un hardened targets as well as some things with internal batteries were damaged, but the TLA powergrid was spared the worst. Alaska was a cold nation, Many lines were buried deep. Of course Alaskian command, and the weapons located within were located deep within a hardened location, it wasn't affected in the slightest.

-TLA Command-
"Our forces have been isolated, we were able to prevent most of the damage, however we're offline to the rest of the world."
"Give you 3 guesses on who did it."

"I used a rotor phone on the old lines, I managed to get something going, I will have some people ready for some revenge in about... Now."

-Arcadia, Steel and Fire-
The phone call routed to Russia, then on to Japan, then Red Tide, ViZion, South America, Hawaii, India, Bosnia, Paris, London, then Arcadia. The messages arrived mere seconds before Steel and Fire shutdown their communications network. One person who recieved the message was a young wild looking man that, soon after recieving the message, put on his coat and left his apartment and into the street. After walking on down he ended up in the crowds that appear in almost every city in the world. A few more minutes he entered the center of the crowd. Looking around the man paused then standing in the middle of the large group of pedestrians, he opened his coat... and exploded.

The ships, for the most part, had enough time for a second wave of torpedoes, before the enemy suicide vehicles struck. Four destroyers suffered heavy damage to their propulsion systems, as well as two carriers and an Arsenal-class supply ship. However, damage control teams soon went to work. Closing armored torpedo bulkheads through the ship, systems went to work pumping the water not only out, but actually into the compartment directly across from the flooded one, reducing list to practically nothing by evening out the ship. Damage-control teams moved through the flooded areas, checking that everything was properly sealed-off and, using diving apparatus, working to seal the holes in the ship exterior. The carriers' power systems were undamaged (the reactors are sealed within an armored box), but their propulsion was damaged, and the destroyers were left practically unable to move. Vulcan-class repair ships were dispatched to fix the damage. Meanwhile, a task force of thirty Stalker-class subs was assigned to sweep the ocean floor, destroying any additional suicide subs dormant there. The fleet would not be surprised again.

OOC: I'm not sure if I already RP'd the attack sub part...I'm tired and too lazy to check.

OOC : finally! a chance to post.

"Oh, the Dunerian's? Scare the hell out of me. You never know what they're planning..... A few years ago, me and my platoon, where heading towards Point 678, when we ran into some Dunerian "Revolutionaries". That's what the troops are called, mind you. Anyways, we had them on the run, when all of a sudden I heard a thump, and saw just light. When I came to, I saw the rest of my team dead. Not shot, but blew to peices. Evidently a group of them, snuck behind us and threw their grenades. Didn't even hear em' or see em' . Yeah, they definetly have something going on. They're crazy."
Colonel Granger of the Veronesca rebels.

Seattle
"Damnit! There goes our left flank."
Colonel Stein mentioned towards the western area of the beach. The Warmaster's forces were slaughtering the troop's inside the trench, and it seemed that the Dunerian's were floundering inside their once safe hiding area's.

"Shit, I alway's knew those paratroopers couldn't hold their own."
"Don't worry," whispered a cold voice. "They're served their purpose well."
Comrade-Minister Brom held a detonator.
"You remember what's under that area, don't you."
What Brom was referring to, was thousands of pounds of explosives hidden under the beach.
Known only to higher-up's, the explosives would do massive damage to the enemy.
But at a cost.
"Don't worry Stein, Those Paratrooper's are as good as dead. This wouldn't change anything."

Stein painfully knew that Brom was right.

Brom pushed the detonator.

From the obeservation post, Brom could see the left flank transform.

The ground opened up in a gigantic yawn, swallowing The Warmaster's troop's and tanks alike in a gigantic plume of flame*. Nothing in BEACH BETA 5678/ AREA 9 would survive. Yet still more tanks and soldier's came from the gigantic troop transports.

That's why reinforcements always come in.

From seattle, Thousand's upon thousand's of T-100 battle-tanks came streaming towards the beachhead, along with 500,000 Dunerian Revolutionaries, armed to the teeth with RPG's and AK-108's.

The T-100's fired upon the incoming troop's resulting in supreme destruction as the Revolutionaries closed the gap.*

To cover their advance, Dunerian Artellery fired hundred's of thousand's of rounds at the Warmaster's fleet.

Once again blood soaked the beach's of Seattle, for both sides.
OOC: sorry if the post doesn't make sense ( In grammar terms), I'm a bit rushed.
* Warmaster, you calculate the damage.

-Alaskan Shore Defense Battery-
In the now pitch black tunnels of the massive seaborne defense system, a coast guard soldier was swearing up a storm as he changed lightbulbs by candle light. "********ing EMPs," *unscrew* "Have to replace all these blown out ****s while they try to get an old rusty generator working." He continued mumbling while others stood guard at the row of 155 cannons emplaced within the bunker, outside others gave moderate repairs to the small 120mm Turrets along the beaches in their sector.

TACTICAL ISOLATION MODE FOR ALL MILITARY FORMATIONS. ORDERS: ATTEMPT CONTACT WILL OTHER LOCAL BASES AND ESTABLISH LOCAL COMMANDS, YOU ARE AUTHORIZED
TO ACT WILL FULL POWER AS NEEDED.

-TLA Airfield South Alaska-
The normally active base was eriely silent that morning, that is unless you counted the groaning of people dragging vehicles off of a runway.
"Do they have that old Radar working yet?" One of the Airforce soldiers said as he helped 2 dozen other people shove a 2 Ton truck off of one of the rear fields.
"Nope, but with us launching the Boralis wing, it won't matter much." another answered. And at the conclusion of his sentence the loud roar of a MIG-25 taking off silenced him. TLA wasn't dead, not just yet.

-Alaskan Command-
"We're running blind gentlemen," The Polar commander, Leon Travisky said. "TLA command is down, we're on isolation mode, and every base outside of us is EMPed, I've sent some vehicles to vertify if any of them have been hit... But this strike means only one thing..."
"Invasion," came the answer from Alaskan Defense officer Fioare Maddison.
"Indeed, we'll need the other defenses up ASAP, I want every uneeded defense related electronic stripped down and have whatever components we can sent off to the bases."
He turned and looked towards a map of the Northwest, then he glanced towards Pacifica.
"And we need to decide on what to do with Pacifica, Steel and Fire have escalated this into a nuclear conflict one way or another, and considering this is tactical isolation mode..."
"Sir what is it you want to do?"
"Well maybe... We Nuke em... We nuke the bastards, perhaps that will prove our point."
"But not just yet... No this isn't something to just jump in on." He said talking to himself, but he paused when he realized that everyone was watching him.
"You all have your orders, get to work on it!" He shouted, making sure that they knew that the meeting was apparently over.

-North Duneria-
The Attack plan was quick, eliminate any S&F advance troops or scouts, encircle any strong point outposts to eliminate later, and strike at their center and logistics, Sure the loss of contact with command was slightly disturbing, but this was more important.

The Steel and Fire force was within their grasp, they know with the rapid advance they were as close to a 'suprise' attack as possible. For the most advanced group, there were only 12 miles to go.

::: Arcadia, Steel and Fire :::

The room wasn't pitch black, lit only by the eerie blue glow of display screens. It wasn't even remotely dim. It was lit by bright hard fluorescent lamps concealed in nooks in the ceiling; and it was full of DoD employees at computers in cubicles, or perhaps at conference tables sipping assorted beverages and chatting away, or talking on cell phones, or examining maps and the like. Prominent on larger screens was a satellite map showing the progress of a fleet of aircraft flying across the remotest areas of Northern Canada, inhabited only by Inuit and the odd sasquatch.

It was another ordinary day, at least until the message streamed down from the higher echelons.

STATUS OF OPERATION: KHRUSCHEV IS COMPLETED
STATUS OF OPERATION: RIVENEYE IS IN PROGRESS
STATUS OF OPERATION: FRANKFURT IS GO
STATUS OF OPERATION: MOUSETRAP IS GO
STATUS OF OPERATION: MIRROR IS GO

And its continuation, which the DoD duly passed on.

BLIZZARD EXPECTED, BRING SKIS.

Life in the War Offices then returned to normal. Only a few hundred thousand of Steel and Fire's uncounted millions were to respond.

::: Unnamed Glacial Valley, along fuzzy border of Northern Alaska :::

It wasn't an airfield. As a result, the landing might be a bit rough; but it was flat enough, and open enough, that the big transport planes didn't have a real problem. Of course, there was scarcely room for two hundred aircraft to land at once; the first landing and unloading took about an hour. The planes returned towards Steel and Fire, and an hour later, the second group of two hundred arrived, each group escorted by a few hundred fighter planes.

Once the 33rd Tactical had finished in Duneria, it would be marching into southern Alaska. But the first stage of the attack would come from the north, with the 33rd's sister unit, the 29th Tactical (accompanied by the 1170th Anti-Air Brigade and the 86th Strategic Bombers). In the frozen wastes of the north, pretty far from just about anyone, the troops began to pour out onto the ground. Within two or three days they would be in the populated areas of Alaska, perhaps giving their more southerly comrades time to clean up their area so that the two prongs of the attack would hit simultaneously.

::: North Duneria :::

"Operation Mirror is a go, sir."

Malone dismissed the subalt with a wave of his hand. "It's not a go until we've killed these last few Lonies. Jim, what are the buggers up to now?"

"Twelve miles off, and doing their best to eliminate our scouts and the like. They're spreading out, too, probably trying to get around our defences."

Malone stretched luxuriously. "Light the defences."

"Yes, sir."

Extending practically all the way around the Steelian base camp, the hastily erected defences -- the work of five hundred thousand -- quickly became active.

Lone Alliance forces approaching the Steelian positions would first come to electrified fences, topped with barbed wire. Upon breaching the fences, they would enter the no-man's land. Scattered freely with mines, the no-man's land was smoky and made visibility almost impossible -- partly due to the fires of the Fire Trench, partly due to smoke grenades and flashbangs that would start going off as soon as the Lone Alliance forces were close enough to see the defences. In addition, as soon as the fence was breached, the gunners would start up, stationed at pillboxes and machine gun nests scattered liberally on the other side of the trench, filling the air with bullets and mortar rounds. At the other end of no-man's land was the trench itself; four metres deep, four wide -- dug by artillery -- and filled with oil. Naturally, of course, the oil had been set on fire, and winds fanned the flames, creating leaping tongues of flame ten feet high. Beyond that the Lone Alliance troops would enter urban warfare at its finest, the outer limits of the city, manned by well over fifty thousand Steelian troops and full equipment. Arms depots, supply dumps, and makeshift airfields were all behind these lines, preventing the Lone Alliance forces from striking them first.

Meanwhile, even as the Lone Alliance forces advanced, they were beset by rocket fire and airstrikes; rockets and bombs landed among them as they advanced towards the Steelian positions, destroying equipment, vehicles, and personnel and hopefully slowing down the enemy forces a wee bit. And a small convoy of transport planes escorted by fighters departed for Pacifica to pick up some useful cargo. This could turn out to be rather interesting after all.

"Crap, there's no way we're getting through that," Johnson said viewing the Steelian lines from a high point of one of the numerous mountains scattered throughout the area. This was soon covered by the Steel and Fire smokescreen that appeared seconds later. "Do they think we're idiots or something? We don't have enough to do a stupid human wave attack and hope to get through... Crap another Artillery barrage." he said ducking down as another bunch of shells landed somewhere further back. "Scatter and continue to destroy all their forward scouts, we can blind them quite nicely. The rest should go west and get your rockets in range of his beacheads. As long as we keep AA up and prepare against artillery they will be unable to simply bomb us into submission. So in order to stop us from bombing their transports they will have to come out of their shell and engage us.

When I wish to give battle, my enemy, even though protected by high walls and thick moats, cannot help but engage me, for I attack a position he must succour.
