Eight days ago Xamie, a ten-year-old girl was found dead in the tool house of Thuvif, a local metalworker. She was found not by police, but a group of twenty men and women who had stormed door to door in the small village of Gold Swallow. After finding the child's mutilated body, they tried Thuvif down and stoned him to death in the village square, before a gathering of over one hundred people.

The twenty men and women are currently in police custody, charged with breaking and entering, mass disorder, and murder.

Kesshite legal authorities, and popular opinion, are divided on the issue of what punishment, if any, they should receive.

"The reason these people had to take matters in their own hands was because of the failure of the Kesshite legal system," says one of the defense advocates. "Xamie was the fourth child to disappear in as many months, and the police were doing nothing to apprehend the criminal. We're dealing with a group of grieving family members, who acted hastily, but did so to protect their loved ones."

Nor are their actions unusual in undeveloped areas of Kesshite, where there are few, if any police officers. "Fifteen years ago, officers of the law operated mostly in the major cities," points out Minister Thalime, head of the region were Gold Swallow is located. "These people are used to frontier justice. We had two officers in the area, who were both physically blocked by observers when they tried to stop the stoning."

Meanwhile, an investigation is still being held regarding the murder of Xamie, and the other three children. Officers say that while Thuvif is a suspect, the toolshed the girl was found in was unused, and easily accessible. No other bodies have been found, and they fear the killer might still be at large.
