Right, so. I'm not the best strategician or tactician (my talent lies in diplomacy and minor roleplays), so I'm looking for a nation to serve under, as a lieutenant or someone else that would be given some sort of command in the field, to build up my knowledge of the aforementioned subjects (if there is something that I should be reading in addition, please suggest it).

I have no real preference in what hardware the nation uses, nor do I have a preference for its government, so long as I am allowed ICly to make decisions (expect a lot of questions and cooperation on my end OOCly, however).

Is anyone willing to train me in how to blow shit up?

Uh, sorry: I don't really want to serve on an ironclad/galleon (modern battleships have guns in turrets, placed in abc/xyz positions; 'rank' suggests a broadside arrangement, a la Age of Sail). :/

In any case, I don't think you were exactly what I had in mind when I asked for a mentor.

I could give you a position as a field commander in the Hegemony international force, under Captain Wall (he acts as a 5-star general) and General Mcalpin. You can join the Hegemony too, and get some protection for your nation.
