A new hope (ATTN: Tartars, Aurum Domus, others)

the preperations were being made for an invasion against the Tartar menace. hundreds of ships full of Marines departed from the port of Trioda. as that was happening, Cazelian fighter bombers based on aircraft carriers were being armed for an aerial assault of the Tartars.

this would be one hell of a war...
Steel and Fire

It had been dubbed the 'First Grand Expeditionary Armada'.

The harbours at Halifax had not been anywhere near enough to hold its sheer volume of ships; the airfields of the single military base were soon overflowing with fighters and bombers. Traffic spilled over to Port Acheron; technically, it was a civilian harbour, but at this point, nobody cared. The important thing was that Steel and Fire was going to war once more, to defend a 'potential ally' as some people put it; the real reasoning was related to "We don't like these guys, so we'll kill them", with nothing to do with furries, genocide, alliances or anything else. Anyway, the odd war every now and then was highly useful for political and propaganda purposes.

It was commanded by General Romulus Augustulus "Bigwig" Hauptmann, the fifth member of the Council of Twelve to command a military presence this month. At his disposal were at least two thousand ships, over twelve thousand aircraft, and a judicious selection of Army boys and Marines; it was ridiculously excessive, as he was the first to admit, but hopefully it would scare off this coalition thing he and his allies were up against.

General Hauptmann was a solitary and eccentric man. His plans he rarely confided; his habits were inexplicable; in moments of crisis he would frequently spout poetry or fall asleep. He was commonly seen chain-smoking huge cigars while somehow managing not to ignite his massive moustache. And it was said he had one of the more brilliant strategic minds in all of Steel and Fire, if not the world.

As he recited Wordsworth to himself, he watched from atop his warship's superstructure, perched high up where he could see the launch of the entire fleet. The SFRS Augur was a mighty ship, and the five other ships of its class that sailed alongside it were no less impressive; the pickets of cruisers, ADVs, and destroyers stretched off into the haze on either side, as far as the eye could see, and he knew that below the sea the submarines were enforcing the fleet's boundaries as well. Overhead were combat air patrols, scouring the air and sea for any sign of enemies; behind him, if he looked, was the harbour, where thousands—nay, millions of Steelians cheered and waved as the fleet cast off. The irony of the lines he recited may have been lost on him; or it may have been the whole point.

If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature's holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

The brand new 4th, 5th, and 6th Battle Fleets readied for departure. These ships were top of the line, part of the naval modernization program. The fleets together totaled around 75,000 Marines, 2,000 fighters and bombers, and many other destructive devices. This fleet would show what happened when the rights of innocents were violated, the Tartars would soon be anhilated.

The entire 2nd Fleet, 50% of Red Tides Naval Projection force, set sail. The 2nd Fleet consisted of 6 Dreadnought Battlegroups, 6 Carrier Battlegroups, and one Capitol Battlegroup*, a truly massive force steamed out to sea, formed up, and headed for the Tartars land at full speed.

Trailing behind the battlegroup were numerous troop transports and escorting frigates/destroyers. The transports carried an entire Field Army, 525,000 men. They too were heading for Tartarystan(will SP later).

OOC: A standard Dreadnought Battlegroup consists of:

1 Raven-Class SuperDreadnought
1 Tsunamis-Class Supercarrier
2 Bluebird Guided Missile Cruisers
5 G(un)-Battleships
5 M(issile)-Battleships
12 Tidal Wave-Class Guided Missile Destroyers
24 Mockingbird-Class Frigates
12 TC-2C Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopters
60 H/K-1 Surface Attack Aircraft
50 H/K-2 Interceptors
Assorted Supply Ships

My Carrier battlegroups are the above, minus the Superdreadnought. While my Capitol Battlegroups are the same as the Dreadnought Battlegroups, only add another cruiser and replace the 'Raven'-Class Dreadnought with a 'Flagship'-Class SuperCapitol.

The Prestonian Navy's Second, Third and Fourth Fleets left port, steaming at full speed towards Tartarystan. With them was Prestonian First Army, and the First and Second Marine Commands. 300,000 troops were headed toward the Tartars, with more to follow. The battle plan was simple: the carrier-based aircraft would establish air superiority, then proceed to bomb the shit out of anything standing. After that, the ground forces would mop up what was left.

A Red Tidean RORSAT-2(RADAR Oceanic Reconniassance Sattelite-2) detected the Cazelian battlegroup and transports as it headed for Tartarystan. Instantly, the Red Tide Military swung into action. Specifically, the Navy. Even more specifically, the TSRT-NAWLB(Totalitarian State of Red Tide Naval Air Wing Land Based).

Screaming down the runway with CM-1 Anti-Ship Missile strapped to their wings and tucked into their bombbays, six hundred NIA-04 Long Range Naval Interdiction Bombers took off and headed for the Cazelian fleet. Escorting them were 26 EWACs(Electronic Warfare & Air Control) to pinpoint the exact location of the Cazelian fleet.

They would wind up in Cazelian RADAR range in 8 hours.

The Mojave class stealth cruisers of the 332nd 'Knight Hunters' squadron glided (glid, glode?) silently through the water.

under full EMCON and stealth procedures, the ships were as close to invisible as they could be made, and where they weren't invisible, the noises and radar returns were crafted as much as possible to seem natural, in some cases the signatures even had to be enhanced to avoid telling blank spots so that the four vessels seemed like nothing more than the natural action of the sea. Even the squadrons formation was carefully constructed to disperse the ships wake signature.
The Knight Hunters, and seven other Mojave squadrons, as well as a similar number of NAIAD hunter-killer subs were the advance force of Mondoth's fleet, capable of standing alone for considerable amounts of time without detection. These elite ships were tasked with monitoring the situation, the cruisers could launch reconnaissance UAVs without breaking stealth and gather passive information on radar and other sensor coverage of the war zone, and when the time came, the pre-positioned ships would un-mask their teeth with powerful EW arrays and missile strikes, providing the rest of the fleet with a distraction from the main force of the attack.

Steel and Fire
01-08-2007, 20:57
The Grand Expeditionary Armada approached Tartar waters as dawn broke.

A force of its size was obviously not there solely for defence; and Hauptmann already knew his plan of action. Once the invaders were repulsed, his force would be tasked with pursuing them back to, and occupying, their homelands. It was simple strategy: Take the war to the enemy, and their morale drops; their trade is impeded; their lives are generally made miserable. While initially they will burn with patriotism and righteous anger against the enemy, after a time they will become weary and jaded; the government will unquestionably reject even the most generous of Steelian surrender terms (as governments are wont to do), ultimately leading citizens to question their own government, for Steel and Fire is no psychotic dictatorship like Doomingsland or Automagfreek.

But all that was for the future; for the present, Hauptmann contented himself with examining Intel's reports on the forces he was facing. He knew he should not be overconfident and should not underestimate his enemies; perhaps they were more resourceful than they looked. So he examined the tentative fleet lists that had been compiled.

"Cazelians.... estimated at 'a few hundred' ships; same as the Prestonians. Doesn't look like anything too spectacular. H'rm.... Mondothians are deploying three 'task forces', however large those might be. Knowing the situation I'll set 'em down for a couple hundred at least, and that's Mondoth; it hosts a couple of big military corporations if I so recall, so we can expect higher quality stuff from them. Doxmini's deployed mostly aircraft, with only a few ships; looks like a carrier fleet."

He stared at the map for a second. Then he hit a button.

"General?" An aide entered, her eyes slightly widening at the sight of the General's office and its decor.

"My dear, would you kindly inform Wavedeath, Octopus, Searift, Grimsail, Redwake, and... erm.... Hammerhead that we have an interception?"

"Will do, sir," she said, puzzled. "What are the co-ordinates?"

The General said, "Eight eights are eighty-one; multiply by seven. If it's more, carry four, and take away eleven.... Nine nines are sixty-four, multiply by three; when it's done, carry one, and then it's time for tea."

"I beg your pardon, sir?"

"Oh. Thirty-six ninety-four West, forty-two seventy-one North."

"Yes, sir."

Six of the supercarriers that floated majestically through the centre of the fleet suddenly began to belch forth aircraft. They were STOVL (Short Take-off and Vertical Landing) fighters, naval versions of the F-27 Rapier, which was the SFRAF's mainstay air superiority fighter. About half of these F-27Ns were configured for interception; the other half were in dogfight configuration, as speed was of the essence. Due to their STOVL configuration, the carriers were able to launch as many as four at a time; each carrier held two hundred F-27Ns, making a total of 1,200 aircraft that were in the sky within twenty-odd minutes. As they accelerated to supercruise, Mach 2.2, the six hundred interceptor configured planes formed a wide chevron. The Steelian fighters were climbing to about 55,000 feet to begin with; technically they could hit 75,000 feet, but only in emergencies and they wanted some room to maneuver.

Within minutes they had passed the Red Tide fleet, in pursuit of the Doxminian Chinooks and fighter-bombers; while the fighter-bombers were protected by radar jamming, the Steelians had AWACS support, and the powerful sensors provided by the ten large command aircraft was sufficient to detect the anomalies and disruptions that revealed the existence of the planes. Abruptly, as "All squadrons, we have bogies inbound, Sky Eye should be painting them for you; four vamps, then arteebee. Good luck." echoed through radio chatter, the ASFs fell back a bit and the interceptors came forwards, slowing enough to drop four Long-Ranged Laser Guided Air-to-Air Missiles (LRLGAAMs) apiece, then abruptly lost altitude until they were clear of the air fleet and began to return to their carriers.

Despite the name, the missiles used both radar and laser guidance; the radar guided them to within range of the laser, which then kicked in and selected a target. With 2,400 missiles, it was enough to have two missiles targeting each fighter-bomber as well as the radar-jamming planes, and the laser guidance rendered traditional countermeasures such as chaff and flares ineffective; despite the missile spam, however, the Steelians fully expected that some of the planes would survive, and anyway, there were those pesky helicopters to worry about. Hence, the ASFs, which slowed as they began to close towards dogfighting range (being about 300 km from their targets at this point, that was still a fair distance).

Meanwhile, the fleet was still prepared to engage whoever came too close, "too close" being at this point a distance on the order of 1000 km. Technically, the SSM-71s most commonly used by the SFRN could hit targets over 1500 km away; even larger ballistic missiles could hit fleets that had yet to leave port, but there was a good chance the war would be over before it begun, as tended to happen more and more frequently these days.

"Mr. Jones, sir," the secretary interrupted, "wouldn't it be a better idea to find out what the UFAN actually is before denigrating it?"

"Of course not! What gave you such a worthless idea?" Jones barked. He stroked his chin for a moment. "However, it may be useful to understand what exactly this alliance does, and who is part of it. Give us a little target list and suchlike, you know."

"Of course, Mr. Jones," she purred, having already inputted the search terms on her computer. She looked over the files, then printed them and handed them to Jones, who examined them.

"Eighteen member states.... Mutual defence alliance, protects freedom and sovereignty, consists mainly of smaller-to-medium-sized nations as it seems.... Annabel, have you ever heard of any of these places?"

"Er.... yes, we have large Intel files on Vetaka, Wagdog, Aurum Domus, Calizorinstan, Vetalia, and smaller files on most of the rest. Still, some of these are significant nations, with populations of two billion or more."

Most Serene and Holy Altaic Empire of Tartarystan

By direct order of Imperial Chancellor Tulisen Cirgote, in the name of Holy Altaic Emperor Sibeoci Sereri, by the grace of God, orders the mobilization of the Imperial Tartar Army, the Imperial Tartar Navy, and the Imperial National Guard to defend the nation, continent, and people of Tartarystan. The DEFCON level has been pegged at DEFCON 1. Coastal defenses have been set on maximum alertness to repel any amphibious assaults of Tartarystan. With the northern part of the shore of Tartarystan completely frozen over due to the winter and extremely cold climate of Tartarystan, the southern cliffs of Tartarystan are still vulnerable to an amphibious assault. Huge numbers of defensive emplacements now ring the Tartar cliffs in the South to repel any invasion. Missile screens, radar, and air units have been placed on full readiness. Guerilla and partisan organizations are already being formed just in case.

Imperial Tartar Army
720,000 Tartar infantry
24,000 Merkava Mark IV LICs
1,800 PAK-FAs
36,000 Merkava IFV Nammers
360 Tu-160 White Swans
14,400 2S31s
7,200 BM-30 Smerches
2,400 Merkava Tankbulances
2,400 Ka-50-2 Erdogans
360 Arrow Theater Missile Defense Systems
2,400 S-400 Triumfs

These forces have already been mobilized. The Imperial National Guard has not been included because there is no clear estimate of how many are in the Imperial National Guard. The Most Serene and Holy Altaic Empire of Tartarystan doesn't really have a blue-water navy to speak. The Imperial Altaic Navy is merely a collection of missile boats, submarines, and etc. to harry the coasts.

Secret IC: When The Lone Alliance makes an announcement such as that, it should be known that usually they have aready started. At the moment that Steel and Fire had it's fleet depart, TLA's Subs had already arrived. OOC: Not too happy about that, but meh, I'll let it slide, given that I haven't RPed entering Tartarystan's waters yet.

The officers of the SFRN were not fools. They fully expected unknown enemies to appear from any and all sides at any given point; hence, the precautions. CAPs scoured the area ahead for any signs of enemy ships, while hunter-killer submarines ran silent and deep in the hopes of catching enemy submarines or ships unawares. Satellite intel, showing faint streaks of heat around Tartar waters, pointed to submarine action in the area; but the evidence was circumstantial, and Intel wanted a closer look.

That was why four squadrons of SSKNs had detached from the main body of the Steelian Fleet and now plowed through the deeps, seeking prey. As the submarines entered Tartar waters, they began to detect objects that were not supposed to be there; objects that, at very least, nobody had told them about. A few words passed between crews and captains in whispers.

"Mines."

Depth charges.

Dropping the explosives on the mines was simple; they didn't appear to be activated. Mine after mine was destroyed as the thirty-two submarines, spreading out, went about their work; then suddenly, they descended towards the seafloor, silence reigning once more. They had caught a glimpse, for a second, of submarines.

Obviously not Tartar submarines—the Tartars, it seemed, do not have a navy. (They do have submarines, as it turns out, but again, our submarine Captains don't exactly know that.) A quick call for backup, in a soundless medium; then silently the hunter-killer submarines began to spread out, relying on passive and towed sonar to find enemy ships; it's difficult, but they got the general idea that they were outnumbered, and the enemy ships were also staying quiet. Hence, why they had not been detected.

It was only a matter of time before the enemy noticed the Steelian submarines, and decided to fire upon them. Fortunately, Steelian submarines do have countermeasures; nonetheless, countermeasures are not 100% effective, and torpedoes have nasty explody bits that can put a hole in a submarine. And with the kind of water pressure outside the sub, that would be rather unpleasant for the crew.
Dalnijrus
02-08-2007, 01:02
+++It had taken about an hour to get everyone assembled in Rostov-on-Don, the capital of Dalnijrus, and about five minutes to decide what the course of action would be in regards to the Cazelian declaration of war on Tartarystan, the latter of which they were obligated to defend under Article II of the Anti-Furry Alliance's chartering document. Even without that, however, it wouldn't have taken any long amount of time to decide on an appropriate course of action.
+++So, with the unanimous decision of the Ministers to propose a state of war to the Dalnijrusian Parliament, just up the street, Lyov Bacherikov had dismissed the meeting, leaving the ministers free to do whatever they had been doing before the interruption in their duties. The Parliament, late the next day, voted overwhelmingly in favour of going to war with Cazelia [ed. note: and Cazelia only, at this point]: 144 voted 'yes', with three voting 'no' and a further three abstaining.

+++Dalnijrus' military was primarily structured for defensive operations in the motherland, but they had an obligation to fulfil—and hell, the troops needed some furfag sympathisers to shoot. One motorised rifle regiment, one field artillery battalion, one air defence battalion and one surface-to-surface battalion, with a supporting tank battalion (mainly T-72DA/T-86s, but with some older T-72s), four helicopter squadrons (one Mi-24; 3 Mi-8), an undersized flight of two A-50 AWACS aircraft, one Su-25 flight and one Su-27 flight (including four of the Su-24MRs attached; all flights, including the A-50s, would make their journeys externally, to escort the unarmed transports), made their way by varying means (mainly in three Il-76 transports of the Dalnijrusian Air Force, in successive waves, supported by a Il-78 tanker).
+++These aircraft had orders to deploy to the Tartarystani motherland, flying out over the Black and Mediterranean Seas and through the Straits of Gibraltar, after radioing ahead to Spain to request permission to enter their airspace. The Spanish air traffic controllers complied—they had problems enough on their hands with Eta declaring open war on their government again, without worrying about aircraft that would soon be out of their hair, and that assured the controllers they were headed to contain a rogue state—and the transports moved on ahead and into international airspace, up past the Iberian Peninsula, Western Europe, and the British Isles, before at last arriving at Tartarystan. This would, however, take some time (roughly eighteen hours for each round trip).

Not only do we find the above Cazelian pretentious, it is also quite laughable. We severely doubt the "full fleged might of the URCA" can amount to something more than an annoying rash on the ass of humanity and the international community.

We also advice all the swine attacking Tartarystan to cease and desist, before we are tempted to show you all how a real empire with a real military works.

Vetalian Southern Command, International Waters

The time had come to bring down the hammer on the Cazelians. While the Expeditionary Force deployed its troops to defend Tartarystan, the Vetalian Southern Command and its ground-force counterparts would prepare for invasion and occupation of Cazelia.

Vetalian Southern Command:

5 Command Groups (SEACOM 6-10)
5 Surface Fleets
5 Task Forces
5 Advanced Carrier Strike Group

Total: Approximately 1,500 combat ships including 30 carriers and enough transports for 250,000 soldiers per day.

Southern Army of Vetalia

100 Armored Divisions
125 Mechanized Infantry Divisions
200 Infantry Divisions

50,000 VSF special forces
100,000 VOF troops

Total: Approximately 4.5 million combat troops and 9 million logistical troops (mostly in Vetalia).

The time had come for the Vetalian army to show its effectiveness on the world stage by punishing the Cazelians for their war against Tartarystan. The operation was entitled Operation Stasov, in honor of the great Vetalian leader of the Revolution.

We do not know how many refuggees we transported. We used about three dozen massive bulk carriers, with an average DWT of two hundred thousand. Because of this, we transported a total of seven point two million DWT, which is the tonnage of the cargo. A ton is two thousand and two hundred forty pounds, so this would mean a total of four hundred and fourty eight million pounds. We took a huge number of women and children, so we can get an average weight of about one hundred and ten pounds. We can effectively subtract many million pounds off as that would easily be attributed to food, fuel, and etc. We get an estimate of just under four hundred million pounds of human weight. This gives us an estimate of around thirty-six million goods. Now, this gives an average of three million people stuck in each boat. Because they were piled upon each other in the ships, not really fed, and there were a lot of children, about a third of them died on the way to Tartarystan and were thrown overboard. This would leave twenty-four million remaining. An altercation with Cazelian forces left two of the ships sunk, bringing it down to twenty-two million. Now, it is understandable that this was a very expensive operation. The government rented those ships from private companies, and had to pay a total of a hundred and fourty million to the companies of the sunken ships, and an additional seventy million to the family of the dead crew members. Not to mention another thirty million to the companies for allowing us to rent them. The trucks purchased were bought a discount from many companies and civilians who had no more use for them. Now, about nineteen million perished in our trucks on their way to the hospital for harvesting. About a third of them percent of them were found to have found the exceptionally healthy organs and blood for harvest we desired. The rest were just used as fertilizer. Another million, mostly children and women, were sold off to various organizations and individuals wishing to purchase them for...interesting purposes, gaining great revenue for Tartarystan. We made so much, we turned a giant profit, generating billions. We used this money, of course, on social welfare, to help our most unfortunate citizens. The other two million were used for target practice and experimentation, and we are willing to release the ones still living for the naval parts you mentioned. We estimate about three or four percent of the subjects are still alive, which gives us about anywhere between sixty and seventy thousand refugees. We are willing to release them for the naval parts you mentioned. It seems a fair deal.

Meanwhile, while we're talking about this subject, we could set up some trade. We have millions of perfectly healthy hearts, lungs, kidneys, and livers you could use. We've harvested over six million sets of each organ, and they're just sitting in our freezers. Of course, we used many to save the lives of many Tartar citizens (they were of course, supplied, free of cost to any citizen that needed it), but the vast majority of them are unused. Of course, we've saved many just to make sure we have more for future Tartar citizens who need it. Now, we can't really use them all, there aren't that many people who need organ transplants. We have a surplus and we're willing to sell some for you at discount prices, just in case you have a shortage of organs. If you're interested in them, you can contact our National Health Service or the Imperial Holy Directorate of Commerce.

You don't get refunds from the people we sold to. The goods are already in foreign countries spread across the globe. There is no way of getting to them. If you really want them, you can have fun hunting down every single criminal organization in every red-light district in the world in every country in the world...except Tartarystan, we don't have any here. Anyways, we could give you some pointers for hunting down these organizations, but they're in foreign nations, so you might want to get permission from the governments of these nations before going in.

In retrospect, we'd rather trade the surviving refugees for grain, something Tartarystan always wants more of.

The Knight Hunters and their brethren slid over the continental shelf, 32 stealth ships slunk steadily closer to Tartar waters, careful to stay well away from the approaching enemy fleets, the ships reached their targets and spread out, deploying sonar buoys and other sensors, as well as radar decoys that would remain neutrally buoyant beneath the waves until compressed air cartridges were triggered creating a forest of radar contacts where before there had been only open water, just another element of the surprise the enemy fleets would have when the main thrust of Mondoth's attack arrived.

Speaking of the main Thrust
Staging Point Dexter, formerly the minor Mondothian holding of Ortea.

The Island was nearly unrecognizable under the weight of its unaccustomed military presence. Mobile sea bases were anchored off shore, giving the tiny island a full airfield which it would not otherwise be large enough for. Without aerial refueling, fighters woud not be able to fly from the staging point to the battle, but it would make an excellent staging point for medium bombers and logistics aircraft, and the land based batteries being established on it would make an excellent stopgap in the event of a defeat.

Marshall Jessica Parker looked down from the military drab VC-223 transport and watched the fleets stream past below, ships were still steaming in from the initial muster points, gliding over the glittering seas like deadly swans.
From below the scene was almost equally impressive, The VC-223 was at the center of a formation of shining red and gold F/A-24 Kestrel fighters, the fighters cavorted within the formation like porpoises in the wake of a passing ship, switching places smoothly with elaborate rolls and dips. As the transport descended, the formation suddenly burst, scattering the brilliant fighters into a series of CAPs to augment the already formidable air defenses, seeming to disappear as the OLED skin displays shifted back to a mottled blue-gray camouflage pattern from the ceremonial red-gold stripes of the Marshall's honor guard.

As the ramp descended Admiral Al Laden was already standing by, when the Marshall descended after a short pause he greeted her.

"Admiral, this is most unusual-"

"It's Marshall now, the Revolution did us both some favors."

"Indeed, Marshall then, but I was not told you were coming, is this a surprise inspection of some sort? As you can see, things are running smoothly here, I'd be happy to escort you around the staging point if you require."

"I already saw everything I needed to from the air, SecDef has put me in charge, you'll stay in an advisory position, but the war is being put under my personal control. Nothing personal, but the ministry is sending additional units and feels that the task force is too large to leave to an admiral. General's Mugabe and Goldemeir will be arriving shortly to fill out an advisory staff."

The Admiral was flustered for a few moments, with his own name on the list, the advisers alone were an all-star cast of Mondoth's top military minds and the Marshall alone was more of a legend. Ruthlessly mercenary, she had stayed with the loyalist forces until the popular uprising shifted the field to the revolutionaries. With her defection, the weight of the war had shifted dramatically and it hadn't been long before the revolution was the legitimate government.
By the time he had worked up a reply, the Marshall was already storming across the airfield towards the command bunker.

Within hours, now plans were already in motion, somewhere well away from any surface fleet, a Shade class SSGN brought itself to within less than two hundred feet of the surface, slowly so as to avoid excess noise, though in seconds it would be a moot point.

"Captain, fire mission on following coordinates, derived from emissions intercept and paired satellite observance."

"Roger comms, Watch, sound general quarters, Fire Control, designate fire mission on coordinates." The CIC sank into dim red light and the rest of the sub burst with activity as the crew rushed to their duty stations.
"Helm, raise tho boat to firing depth."

"Raise the boat, Aye Captain."

The sub settled into position for firing.

"Fire Control, conduct Fire Mission."

"Firing, Aye Captain."

The outer locks on the subs missile tubes opened smoothly, releasing a few scattered bubbles. Suddenly though, the sea above the missile sub boiled as compressed gasses were vented. As suddenly as it had started, a single massive nitrogen bubble belched forth and propelled the 160 canisters of the subs arsenal into the air above.
Almost instantly upon reaching the surface, the canisters burst open into deadly blooming flowers, revealing Thor stand-off surface attack missiles, The missiles boost phases ignited, pushing the weapons over into their proper flight profile and launching them on columns of flame and smoke to the ignition speed of their SCRAMjet main phases.
As the deadly swarm screamed towards the the Steel and Fire fleet, the Shade class ship was already on it's way, crash diving and accelerating at military speed, any response would be too late, in less than a minute, the sub would drop back to it's silent cruising speed and begin a random wandering path to a nearby tender for another deadly load.

Meanwhile, the missiles entered their cruise phase, SCRAMjets igniting and propelling the missiles to hypersonic velocities. In less than ten minutes, the missiles would plunge towards the last reported location of the enemy fleet as updated through the missiles own robust satellite link. Using their electro/optical sensors and an IR networked targeting program, the 160 would choose and attack a hand-full of targets to maximize the chances of sinking at least one or two ships. Fifteen of the missiles were really 'seed' that would release a large number of decoys as they approached the target area, and instead of electro/optical sensors and networking, or explosive warhead, had powerful, short duration jamming systems to further increase the chances of successful hits, so the 145 500kg warheads could do their work.

Similar attacks would take place at random intervals from random locations thereafter, Fully expecting that ASW assets would be dispatched to the areas where the subs were launching from, the seas were thick with Naiad Hunter Killer sub patrols drifting silently, waiting for the approach of enemy subs, and the skies with full of high endurance Predator UCAVs supported by stealthy Kestrel air superiority fighters and a small number of passively scanning E/A-3 AAWACs. The missile sub strikes weren't just nuisance attacks, but an ambush for Steel and Fire's ASW assets.

Tartarystan had been very backwards for the majority of its history. Its rather inhospitable temperature and defensible terrain were often cited as reasons why it was NOT colonized.

Tartarystan was one giant landmass, but most of the coasts were completely frozen over. The most southern region of Tartarystan, Phayul, was the only part not really frozen over.

Tartarystan, despite being an island nation, did not make it an easy to field an army. The northern coasts were in the Arctic making an amphibious invasion rather infeasible simply because everything was frozen over.

Phayul was not a very nice place. It was a high plateau. With an average elevation of 4,900 metres (16,000 ft), it is commonly referred to as the "Roof of the World" by Tartars. It is predominantly valued for its mineral deposits, because its literally impossible to grow anything in this horrible weather. In all honesty, it was very difficult to grow food in most of Tartarystan. It had a horrible weather unsuitable for both agriculture and invasions.

Because of its extreme height, it made it difficult for the Tartars to field any major fleet, but it was also very difficult to bypass.

One would have to climb up huge cliff after cliff and fight and scale through snowy and freezing mammoth Himal mountains, for thousands of kilometres, most of them vertically.

There would be no use for marches...but skilled mountain climbers could be useful. With all the defences constructed to utilize this advantage, passing through these mountains would not be easy.

Sniper posts ringed every aspect of these mountains and cliffs, with artillery zeroed in on the tiny strip of beach that extended barely twelve feet away from the cliff.

Tartar troops dressed in pure white camouflaged themselves in the pure white snow. It would be clearly possible if you have the numbers and the willingness to spend them to go past it, but it wouldn't be easy and it would be horribly bloody. The Tartars might not be able to stop a force, but they could sure kill a huge number of people before they could even meet the force.

Tartarystan didn't support huge populations in such inhospitable lands, and it didn't have a large military, which may have lead to the reason it constructed such defences.

The Tartars ringed hid artillery, threw out hundreds of decoy defences, ringed their country with anti-aircraft missiles, and dug elaborate defences for the troops to hide under. Snipers, almost invisible in the snow, hid themselves like phantoms in the mountains, waiting for unlucky soldiers. It was more than fifty degrees below zero.

Steel and Fire
03-08-2007, 01:31
Hints of a Mondothan fleet in the area had been detected quite a while ago. There were a few reasons Steel and Fire had not acted: the ships were too far away, and -- while data was scarce -- there didn't seem to be too many of them. But with all other foreign fleets withdrawn from the area, it seemed the Mondothans were left as Steel and Fire's primary adversary around Tartarystan; and it acted accordingly. Satellites of all kinds began to move into geosynchronous orbit in the Tartarystan area, far more than had initially been there; combat air patrols were doubled, and submarine hunter-killer squadrons were given free rein, running silently through the deeps in search of new prey. A significant portion of General Hauptmann's resources were devoted to finding the Mondothan ships.

The problem was, nobody could exactly find them. From their last known location, they had been tracked into Tartar waters, but had subsequently departed; the search may have gone on for hours if Hauptmann had not ordered it called off, as he deemed the ships no further threat to the Steelian fleet. He reasoned that if they re-entered Tartar waters and became visible, they could be dealt with; meanwhile, there were other things to deal with.

The old general was, as usual, maddeningly right. The main body of the Mondothan armada was still out of striking range, but satellite shots and sub squadrons hinted at submarine presences far closer to the Steelian fleet; the Alarka-class SSKNs were deployed on wide patrols, sweeping as far as several hundred kilometres from the main fleet.

Nonetheless, the first attack did take the Steelians by surprise.

The first defence was an unliving one. Unblinking eyes in the sky, satellites, watched as the submarine released its cargo of a hundred-plus missiles into the air; they dutifully informed their masters of estimated trajectory, velocity, and arrival time of the missiles, and their masters in turn informed the Augur's command crew. These scenes proceeded in order from mechanical silence to enthusiastic noise.

"We're being spammed, estimated at one fifty plus contacts inbound, targets unknown, arrival in T minus eight minutes!" a breathless young Ensign informed General Bigwig Hauptmann, who was sleeping.

Hauptmann opened one eye. "So? Let me know how many are left at T minus one minute, and then we'll deal with it."

With their cold precise math, the satellites had estimated the approximate position the missiles would be at in the amount of time it took them to drop their Brilliant Pebbles, and aimed accordingly; as the watermelon-sized projectiles dropped into the atmosphere, they began looking for targets, relying mainly on infrared and inertia; there was simply not room to mount more. Nonetheless, it was effective. The swarm continued on its path, about seventy missiles short.

A few minutes later, Hauptmann was woken up once more. As the same Ensign attempted to tell him about the results of the Brilliant Pebble strike, Hauptmann irritably waved a hand in his direction. "What does it matter? Leave it to the air defence vessels."

There were well over two hundred ADVs accompanying the Steelian fleet; only a few of them would be needed to launch ninety large blast radius surface-to-air missiles at the missile swarm. A few of the SAM strikes were on contact; the vast majority, however, did their damage by hurling shrapnel and explosives in all directions. Only twelve were left to come into rolling airframe missile range; not a single missile penetrated the Steelian perimeter.

"We believe the missiles were launched from a su...." an aide started, but Hauptmann cut him off.

"Idiot! Of course they were launched from a submarine, a blind man could tell you that! The enemy obviously intends for us to travel to that spot, find the submarine; they must think us idiots. It will be long gone by the time we get there, probably leaving a few mines or traps in its wake; deploying ships there is pointless." The aide, who had been about to speak, fell silent; that was exactly what he had been going to suggest. "However, we have gained a tactical advantage in this situation. Tell me, my aides, what is it?"

There was silence. The aides looked at each other, then at the General. One of them spoke up. "We know that they have submarines positioned throughout the surrounding area?"

"Pah. Any good naval commander would do that," Hauptmann scoffed. "We have our own submarines within striking range of their fleets, too. No; we learned their striking range. They can hit us from at least a thousand kilometres away; hence, naturally our submarine patrols will be fruitless. Admiral?"

Vice Admiral Jim Rasputin, one of Hauptmann's officers, stepped forward. "General?"

"Draw a circle around the fleet, at 1000 km. Position the origin point of this latest attack along the circle; then position the origin points of all future attacks as well, just for reference's sake. Deploy hunter-killer squadrons along the outside edges of this circle; have them contact us at once when they encounter hostiles, as well as report how numerous they are."

"Aye aye, sir." The Admiral did not question how Hauptmann knew there would be future attacks; after all, the old general was far more experienced than anyone else present.

"And now, if you'll excuse me, I have a novel to write." And Hauptmann vanished into his own private chamber.

:::Within striking range of the Mondothan fleet:::

Three submarines had come into close company here, a thousand and a half kilometres from Point Dexter ("Moth Island" in Steel and Fire milspeak). They were missile submarines; a hundred metres from the surface, they waited for the appropriate command, engines quite silent. They had steered well away from the nearest areas of reported Mondothan activity, having no desire to tangle with attack submarines until they were freed of their precious burden: a hundred SSM-45 missiles apiece.

As their orders came in, they began to rise, oh so slowly, towards the surface. They launched their missiles without surfacing; nonetheless, the missiles couldn't stay in the water for long, even encased in protective capsules and bubbles. In an explosion of water and bubbles, they emerged from the water; and that was hopefully the last anyone saw of them.

The SSM-45 was unique in the Steelian arsenal. It was a long-ranged anti-submarine weapon; it was unique because it could also be carried by submarines themselves. Relying on specialised satellites and friendly detection systems to head for the general area in which the enemy submarines could be found, once within an 80-km radius they shed a stage, revealing a torpedo.* The torpedoes simply went in pursuit of any submarines they could detect, even traveling down towards the seafloor to seek out deep-running subs.

Even as this strike was launched, Steelian carriers were belching forth UAVs that, within moments, were flying a few metres above the sea, winging only slightly back and forth and spreading out in arcs as they sought submarines further afield than large and unwieldy ships could. They were camouflaged to appear part of the sea; their radar signatures were about equivalent to those of medium-sized fish, and it seemed likely that they would not be noticed. They carried no weaponry; their goal was detection, and to their eyes the sea was an open book. Large objects such as submarines could be detected down almost to crush depth; and in their wake would follow Alarkas, on the trail of submarines.

The seas would be pink by evening, or the Republican Navy was going soft.

* I'm not really much good at this whole technology thing. Just assume that Steel and Fire has competent engineers with college degrees instead of a bored sixteen-year-old sitting at a computer keyboard.

Off the Coast of Tartarystan

The Vetalian fleet held its position off of the coast, waiting for any word from allied forces to move in and aid them in engaging enemy forces. Although most of the enemy had departed from the region, there was still a chance that some forces would remain in the region and attempt to take advantage of the lull in hostilities. Ground troops were in place around the country but they would have little chance of helping naval forces.

However, with over 850 combat ships in the region, Vetalia was well prepared for any potential problems.

OOC: Just on behalf of terrible grammar, inability to form a coherent or sensible post, and generally having your poorly written troops do the impossible, I've opted to ignore the part of your posts that are examples of godmoding.

In a defence, even though they weren't expecting a large scale assault on their northern coasts, no idiot left any part of his country undefended at all. Chinooks came off on radar quite easily, considering they weren't stealth helicopters or anything...which don't really exist since the shape of a helicopter prevents anyone from creating a stealth version. It was not a very good idea to attempt an airborne assault with no effort to suppress the very potent anti-aircraft lined around Tartarystan. Within entering four hundred kilometres of Tartarystan, SA-20 Triumf missiles had an easy time locking on to the slow and lumbering helicopters. Chinooks didn't really have a decoy system, making them sitting ducks for the missiles swarming toward them at with radar using command guidance with terminal semi-active radar homing. The chances of them escaping was rather low considered Chinooks really had no defence against surface to air missiles and considering there was enough fire-power in each one to disintegrate ten helicopters. Than considering six missiles were launched at each helicopter, it made things quite...nasty for the occupants of the helicopters.

The operator loved firing these missiles. It was always so satisfying to see watch as the blip of the missile crashed with the blip of the bogey on the radar screen. He didn't get to see the explosion or death that usually came...all he got was a radar blip disappearing. But even that was so satisfying.

Tartar tanks backed by mechanized troops headed toward the area where the Chinooks were, hoping to help exterminate and destroy any survivors, who would be outnumbered and than surrounded. It wasn't hard. The tanks were fast enough to surround them. All they had to do after that was slowly close in on them like a fist and crush them. Of course, that was if there were any survivors...which wasn't a given.

The sound of an ASROC hitting the water couldn't be missed, as soon as the splashdowns were registered on SONAR, any submarines in range froze, the Torpedo alarm turned the subs into tombs, with engines at full stop and the crew barely daring to breathe, the only sound to be heard were the stiffled reactor noises from the Shades nuclear power plants.

The first line of defense was the silence,, waking detection difficult by passive means, but torpedoes were rarely passive and so the Shade and Naiad class submarines had a comparative array of defenses. If ever the Torpedoes went to active detection, the subs in the area would cloud the waters with a variety of countermeasures, active sonar pulses would be made to mirror those of the approaching torpedo, potentially confusing it, decoy's would be launched that would add even more noise and false returns to the battle. The submarines themselves would start movin again, desperately seeking an escape, and, if somehow the enemy torpedoes showed any signs of defeating the huge variety of 'soft' countermeasures, it would be time to deploy the hard-kill defenses.
The older Naiads had a complement of five-inch counter-torpedo torpedoes that would seek out and destroy the oncoming weapons, with warheads large enough to turn a near miss into a probable kill.
The newer Shades however, were better equipped.
Electronic pulse projectors lined the hull, connected to the subs sonar system, they could project low frequency sonar pulses that are hard to detect and can generate returns over long distances, but when connected to the submarines automated self defense system and an array of super-capacitors, the pulses could be turned up to project tightly focused pressure wave with enough force to crush rock and severely damage torpedoes. The system had its drawbacks in power requirements and charging time for the capacitors, but very little got through.
In minutes, the subs were nowhere to be found, having used the decoys and defenses to buy time for an escape, leaving two damaged Naiads behind to be picked up by whatever rescue fore could be managed.
The attacks would not stop however, instead, the submarines would make fuller use of the Thor missiles 1,000 nautical mile range (~1'800 km) and would work their way around the circle from which they could still fire on the Steelian fleet, it would spread the Naiads and Pedators thin, but would make the missile subs much less vulnerable to further ASROC attacks as the missile strikes would be coming from multiple directions, randomly changing positionss on the circle.

While the submarines were under lockdown, it fell to the predators to respond to the threat, the air based ASROCs carried by a few of the fighters were not as long ranged as the Steelian sub based weapons, but firing from the fighters, the difference in range counted for little. The predator's flew sorties scratching the surface of the thousand km exclusion zone to deploy the torpedo tipped missiles while the Kestrel stealth fighters hung back in case of an aerial reprisal.

AS the last fe Ships of the Task Group trickled in, the first wave of the fleet action departed the Staging point; A full task force worth of corvettes and ASW/AAW destroyers were dispatched to clear out the undoubtedly present Steelian subs, undersea, Naiad SSHs and Swift SSKs hunted for the lurking threats, while above, helicopter ASW platforms dropped active sonobuoys and used dipping sonars to flush them out, torpedoes ready at all times for when the enemies were discovered.

tartarystan says im godmoding? you have made your nation invinsible. im not joking you will kill anything that comes within range of your missles and say its dead or make it immpossible odds of escaping. and by the way those were plans. ive not launched anything yet, ill launch when i say ive launched.that was an order not that i said the cchinooks were already landed.the key word was planed. ill wait til my allies are on the offensive before considering an assult on a well defended area.

[ And heeeeere we go.

Using rustran.com plx don't raep. Need to take Russian class lator. D:

Also: assume the Dalnijrusians worked out an agreement to halp fortify previously. ]

+++'Пеликан Один, число 4С310ВТ6 хвоста, называя Наземное управление. Вы видите нас?' (This is Pelican One, tail number 4S310VT6, calling Ground Control. Do you see us?) came the call over the Tartarystani air traffic controllers' radio in north-central Tartarystan, a critical chokepoint to secure against any attack from the north-east and north-west. Upon their recognition of the three Il-76 transports and Il-78 tanker, Pelican One's pilot would then request to land at the nearest airstrip capable of taking the transports and fighters that had tagged along.

---

The hammer has struck.

+++Dalnijrusian infantry and equipment poured out of the formerly Soviet transports, while the massive Ilyushin Il-78 sat placidly on the other end of the runway, patiently awaiting its turn to get back into the skies and aid the transport of more supplies and troops. Several Tartarystani ground crew technicians milled about the fuselage, refuelling the aircraft.
+++The scene of soldiers, vehicles and aircraft being unloaded in a constant stream of dull metal and uniformed flesh covered much of the runways, filling the air with the sound of boots and industrial clanking, rumbling and whirring. All were rapidly moving toward a position not too far away from the airport, where Dalnijrusian sappers would begin to construct fortifications, amplifying the lethality of the already deadly terrain of the region. Some of the Su-27s and a single A-50 remained behind, circling in aerial patrols over the area.
+++The scene was repeated a handful of times over, in south-central and south-eastern Tartarystan, with varying strategies according to the terrain encountered. These locations were deemed by the Dalnijrusian military commanders to be locations that were expressly important to the defence of the country; the Tartarystani military would need to provide cover elsewhere.

As suddenly as the attacks began, they stopped. Almost all of the Shade commanders sent back for confirmation of the new orders, and all of them got it.
The Missile subs most recently depleted wandered to their next tender appointment but the majority of the Shades simply pulled back from the Steelian fleet. At the same time, a Quicksilver class cruiser accompanied by two destroyers and a variety of corvettes broke off from the main thrust of the fleet and steamed recklessly towards the area where two Naiads had been damaged, ostensibly to conduct rescue and recovery operations, a deep sea recovery vehicle mounted on the aft of the cruiser, in lieu of a helicopter standing mute testament to the flotilla's peaceful intentions.

As silently as they had come, dozens of attack submarines and missile submarines began the run back towards the main armada, whose advance had abruptly halted. Through the deeps they went; in the air, the fighters deployed so far returned to their carriers, landing in groups of a few at a time. The 1000-km perimeter was disregarded; a few of the submarines closer to the Steelian armada surfaced in order to travel faster, as their stealth was no longer of the essence.

A cease-fire was being observed. By direct order of General Hauptmann, the Steelian war machine returned to its state of slumber, having barely flexed itself awake. Blood would not be spilt today; they hoped. For now was a time not for actions, but for words.

Diplomacy and cooler heads had prevailed, for a change.

Having reached a cease-fire agreement with the Commander of the Steel and Fire forces, Mondoth wishes to open diplomatic relations with Tartarystan with regards to the disposition of refugees of the former state of Free Furry Islands now and recently in the possession of The Holy Empire. We are willing to fully and peacefully cooperate with Tartarystan in ensuring the humanitarian disposition of these refugees and in putting a stop to this senseless war.

We are willing to send representatives to Tartarystan to discuss this further.

Thank you.

SIC:
The radio was silent. As always, there would be no record of even the slightest bit that could be linked to the mission, not even a request for permission to take off. If something went wrong, the crew would be notified via nonspecific general notifications from the tower, but nothing went wrong and the B-7 Banshee bomber lifted invisibly into the night.

A tanker would be waiting at the half-way point, but that was on the record as being for a scheduled training flight, the sort of thing pencil pushers could write into the records in fifteen seconds and never get noticed, a flight of training aircraft would even rendezvous with the tanker a few minutes later, but it wasn't necessary when a million things could cancel such a flight as easily as it had been created.
Deniability was the key as much as stealth, if, at the last minute, the order was go instead of no-go, not even the people who had given the orders would be able to truthfully say whether the mission had ever existed or not, the only real evidence easily disapearable soldiers and the broken remains of bombed targets, even the aircraft that had participated might be disassembled... if they survived.

Another great thing about stealth gliders is that they can move almost sielently carrying the speacial delta force sniper/seals squad they were meant to carry.

"shhhhhhhhhhh we have come within radar range, with the stealth we "should" be invisible but they might pick up on us" stated the captain as they approched tartar airspace
