Novikovian Defence Realignment

Realignment of RAF bases in Novikov.

Secretary of State for Defence Sir Quentin Sterling announced plans for the reorganisation of the Royal Armed Services in Novikov, including the closure of numerous small bases and outposts.

By the end of 2007, the Royal Air Force is expected to close two facilities in Czechzenia, RAF Znojmo and Trebíc and relocating much of the facilities and personnel to the newly expanded facilities at RAF Prostéjov until a new, modern facility near the city of Tabor is completed sometime in mid-2009. RAF Tabor is expected to house both Novikovian Colonial Air Defence units as well as front line RAF squadrons.

Current upgrades to RAF Chotebor on the island of Turov, expected to be completed by October, will accommodate the relocation of RAF Coastal Command forces currently based across the channel at RAF Tisovec. RAF Tisovec is to close by the end of 2007 with the remainder of its units and peresonnel transferring to the recently completed facility several dozen kilometres to the north in Zvolen.

In Novikov proper, RAF Bomber Command has been notified that its bases at RAF Oslany and RAF Vráble will be shut down by the end of 2007 and the strategic bombers split between RAF Whitford in the Home Islands and RAF Šarovce in Novikov. Long-range tactical bombers and strike aircraft will relocate to RAF Šarovce. North of Šarovce, RAF Trnava will be expanded and modernised to serve as the hub of the RAF's logistical operations in Novikov while maintaining smaller flights at various royal air fields throughout the country.

RAF Fighter Command will lose several bases in Novikov: RAF Plešivec, Nemšová, and Skalica while moving out of RAF Sachnyk and Trnava to allow for other units to consolidate their presence there. Squadrons at Plešivec will be split between RAF Žarnovica and the expanded RAF Poldi'sk. Forces at Nemšová will relocate to RAF Prievidza and Vrútky while forces at Skalica will redeploy to Vyšny-Voločëk and Prievidza. Most of the fighters at Sachnyk will move to Vyšny-Voločëk to be replaced by search-and-rescue, maritime patrol and interdiction aircraft.

According to Sir Sterling, the proposed moves will create a "more streamlined service providing better coverage within more acceptable means." This has not gone without controversy, however, as the Secretary of State for Novikov, Nikolai Ulyanov, son of the late former prime minister, decried the plan as a means of "denuding Novikov of its aerial defence."

Tomorrow will bring official announcements from the Admiralty, organised and administrated as a separate cabinet department, with respect to its modernisation plans. Sources within the Admiralty and from Novikov Station Headquarters in Poldi'sk have told the KBC that among the plans, five or potentially six naval bases will be closed over the coming decade. The same sources, however, caution that the closures are matched with expansions at several key facilities, likely to be Zvolen, Poldi'sk, and Prostéjov.

The sources would not speculate upon the disposition of ships, other than to say that the report would not detail those forces of the Novikovian Colonial Defence Fleet and that total Royal Navy warships would number between 700 and 1000 ships based in and around Novikov.

The Ministry of Defence is expected to announce its changes for Royal Army units in Novikov next months while modernisation plans for bases and outposts in the Home Islands are expected near the end of August.
