The Federal Republic of the Far Echo Islands World Factbook
Geography of the Far Echo Islands
The Federal Republic of the Far Echo Islands is a medium sized nation in land mass and territorial waters; it is a long archipelago of islands that range in climate from arctic to temperate to sub-tropical.
The location of the Far Echo Islands is relative to that of Greenland in the northernmost Islands, and Cuba in the southernmost. The nation’s largest islands are quit far apart, but the numerous small inhabited islands, which average out to be about 100sqkm in area, the nation has rights to many waters.
The highest point is Coledaze Mountain, its elevation is 5057m; it is part of the Yolanda Mountain Chain in the center of Glacia Island, the northernmost isle in the nation. The lowest point is Olde Towne which sits 20m below sea level in the Phillipean Province on the California Island. The island is named for its westernmost point in the nation.
The largest natural hazard to the nation is the threat of tsunamis. With its many large coastal cities a tsunami is a threat to millions. And since most of the islands are formed out of volcanic faults, the threat is very real. A network of seismic seabed Richter scales so as to give warning and all cities of more than 1000 people must have evacuation plans, but the fact that faults lie less than 10 kilometers off shore in some cities it is impossible to completely defend against.
Another threat to the Far Echo Islands that is slower to onset, but could nearly wipe the nation from the map is global warming, in response, the Far Echo Islands has nearly zero greenhouse gas emissions and uses 99.9% ‘green’ power, which comes out to about 2% nuclear, 60% tidal, 11% solar, and 27% wind. Houses and businesses are built to be very energy efficient as well. Electric transport via trains is popular, and cars are powered by newly developed batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.
In keeping with this environmental sense, land use is regulated; the government keeps detailed maps of land claims and usage, and it is updated bi-annually, however the government is working on getting that to be quarterly. About 95% of the land remains pristinely untouched by human hands; the rest is devoted 85% to agriculture, 10% to cities and towns, 4% devoted to industry such as mining and lumber, and 1% to non farming homes. Distillation of salt water is the primary source of water for the nation, but a respectable amount comes from the nation’s many small rivers.
Natural resources vary from Uranium and gold to woodchips, all of which is carefully monitored for environmental impact.
Economy of The Far Echo Islands
The economy of the island nation is heavily dependent around mining and fishing industries, and as hybrid and alternatively powered cars become more commonplace in the world automobile exports of the unique cars from the Islands are becoming more vital. The free nature of the economy makes for a reasonable domestic and international economy. However, the fact that much of the agriculture in the country is subsistence stunts the possibility of a truly powerhouse economy within the next five years or so. Famine is far from a threat however. Film is a major domestic industry in the Far Echo Islands, but the one off culture of the Islands is not often take well to most nations of the world, this goes for the fiction writing industry. But aquatic research publications are well respected for their long and painstaking descriptions of experiments.
The definition of poverty is varied in the Far Echo Islands, most of the 9% of the population that would be below income enough to constitute poverty are actually tribes that have lived happily on untouched small islands for millennia. Those that live in small, sloppily managed cities are dependent on food supplies and a pseudo-welfare program to stay alive. However, the largest cities of the nation are strictly managed, and poverty is kept out by the numerous jobs in the cities, and the variable minimum wage system the country has implemented.
The unemployment rate stands fairly steady at 11% but who is unemployed often changes, with the free enterprise style of the economy company mergers and takeovers often leave well qualified people with out jobs for about 2 months. To compensate the government has enacted that any laid off personnel must receive at least a 75% year’s pay, and taxes on unemployed workers are eased so they do not loose so much to the nation’s 54% average income tax rate.
Nation inflation averages to 0.99% per year, but this is somewhat inaccurate as inflation truly varies city to city than on a national scale. The nation’s currency of the ice diamond is truly a type of low quality diamonds that are found in the far north of the country, they are abundant, and because each one is unique and the average counterfeiter would not have the resources to mine and laser engrave the diamonds with the symbols that are put on the gems therefore counterfeiting has no exact translation in the Arkik language. The exchange rate is about 4.88 ID = 1 USD.
History of The Far Echo Islands
The Islands have been long debated as independent, the first attempt at revolt was an unorganized attempt about 75 years ago by the many tribes to rebel against the emperor, an idea that was unheard of until then, resulted in the ‘Tribal Wars’ but the rag-tag band of tribes could not overtake the numerous, well organized imperial soldiers. After the nearly world encompassing Sound Empire split into the Holy Sound Empire and the Echo Empire 47 years ago, the Far Echo Islands made their first vie for independence, but the region only got war torn by the fighting of the two great Empires over them. 23 years later when political corruption broke out into assassinations that killed almost all the leaders of the Echo Empire, which had won rights to the islands, this temporary confusion of who was in charge caused the revolutions of 17 nations that the Echo Empire had ruled; the Far Echo Islands was one of them. But the Holy Sound Empire came out of nowhere and re-conquered the archipelago. Five years later the still debated responsibility of the detonation of a nuclear device in the capitol of the HSE killed the leadership, and 4.3 million other people, and both the massive empires finally dissolved.
Current issues in the last decade of the Federation has been the debate over communism vs. democracy vs. anarchy, weather or not to tighten the regulations of industry and the economy, and the most international, the debates over the rights of dolphins. The nation recently resolved crisis due to the public declaration of the human rights and citizenship of dolphins, and even got evolved in the ‘1 hour war’ with British Londinium, the misunderstanding turned conflict got very hot and some attention on the international stage. However, not wanting to be war torn just after making a full recover from the massive amounts of napalm used in the war 47 years ago the nation made a quick unconditional surrender to the People’s Sovereign Republic. After this the Grand Arbiter was brought to national court in PSRBL and found guilty of crimes against humanity as well as subversion of the Londii government, both punishable by death, but by luck, a decent defense, and some leeway granted by the quick surrender, the Grand Arbiter avoided death, and was sentenced to pay a large fine and work as a laborer on a state run farm in the PSRBL for one year. Even before the trial was completely over, the British Londinium occupation of the nation was over, and massive celebrations took place in the streets of the cities.
With the Utopian Crusades over, the nation has currently devoted all resources to fighting the Ryou Black Isles in what is being called 'The Bloody Sunday War.'
Now, it seems the nation is under yet another regime change by revolution against the Akimonadite Occupiers and the subservient north.
