HARMONY CITY, E.A. (July 24, 2007) - Sequoia Weaponworks, a wholly owned subsidary of Sequoia Defence Systems LLC of Etoile Arcture, is proud to introduce the MG70 Universal Machine Gun.

The MG70 Universal Machine Gun (UMG) is a gas piston-operated, lightweight automatic machine gun, constructed from high-tech carbon fibre reinforced polymers with chromed steel bolt, breech and barrel. The UMG concept is intended to replace the Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) and General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with a lighter weapon chambered for intermediate cartriges including 6.5 MPC and 6.5 Grendel.

The UMG is light enough to be fired from the hip, shoulder or bipod and provides the basis of fire for the infantry section. It is also capable of producing a large volume of effective fire versus light materiel targets and personnel when mounted on a tripod or pintle. The MG70 follows the same modular approach taken by the G500 Modular Weapon System (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=530272). MIL-STD-1913 Pictianny rails are molded onto the reciever and fore-end, and any number of tactical attachments from optics, iron sights, tactical iluminators and foregrips can be mounted.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The MG70 is an individually portable, gas operated, air-cooled, fully automatic, belt or magazine fed lightweight machine gun. The operating system is short stroke gas piston and fires from the open bolt with positive locking. Ammunition is fed from the left by a 100 round disintegrating split-link belt or a 200 round capacity polymer box magazine. The basic ammunition loadout is 600-900 rounds. The feed mechanism is housed inside the feed cover linked to the central section of the receiver. The feed cover and the ejection port are both protected by dust covers. Spent links and shells eject downwards to reduce visual signature.

The bore and breech are chrome lined, and there is a free-floating, non-fluted, no-tools quick change 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel. It has a fixed head space and three port flash hider, and is replaceable in only three seconds without tools. The weapon has a side-folding skeletonised buttstock and can be fired with the stock folded. By changing the barrel, feed cover and breech assemblies, locking shoulder and gas piston the MG70 is convertible between a variety of calibres. The standard configurations are 6.5 Grendel (model: MG70-M2-UMG) and 6.5 MPC (model: MG70-M2C-UMG).

The upper and lower receiver, buttstock and ventilated fore-end are constructed from carbon fibre reinforced polymers, with an internallly molded checker pattern to enhance strength. MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails are molded onto the upper receiver, and quadrant rails are molded on the fore-end. Optical sights can be mounted on the reciever rail, while standard sights comprise a rear adjustable tangent leaf and flip-up peep sight and a folding front hooded post, both with Tritium luminous dots for night shooting.

The operator controls are of identical design to those used on the G500 Modular Weapon System allowing for easy training conversion by personnel. These consist of a two-stage trigger and ambidextrous safety/selector switch modelled on Heckler & Kock designs. The trigger group allows to execute semi auto or automatic fire.

A collapsible bipod is attached to the gas block. The MG70 can be ground mounted for the sustained fire role on a lightweight tripod with traverse and elevation control mechanism, or pintle mounted on a vehicle.

Sequoia Weaponworks announces MG70A Universal Machine Gun Product Improvement Program

HARMONY CITY, E.A. (July 25, 2007) - Sequoia Weaponworks, a wholly owned subsidary of Sequoia Defence Systems LLC of Etoile Arcture, today announced the completion of the MG70A Universal Machine Gun Product Improvement Program.

In response to user feedback from operators of the MG70 Universal Machine Gun, the Defence Forces directed Sequoia Weaponworks to conduct a Product Improvement Program (PIP) addressing percieved problems with the weapon. The result has been the product improved MG70A Universal Machine Gun and the new MG71K Universal Machine Gun.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The MG70A shares the same basic attributes and features of the MG70, including a short stroke gas piston operating system, split-linked belt feed system and ambidextrous operator controls. Construction is also similar, the reciever being made from carbon fibre reinforced polymers and the breech, bolt and non-fluted quick change barrel from chromed steel.

The ventilated fore-end and quadrant Picatinny rails of the MG70 have been replaced with a polymer hand guard on the gas block and a new over barrel vented heat sheild with a single top rail. The design eliminates the ABS rail guards that were criticised for lack of comfort, and the new vents are better at directing heat away from the hand. The result brings the MG70A closer to the ergonomics of the FN Minini.

Many operators complained of excess recoil felt in the buttstock when shouldering the MG70, and consequently the buttstock has been redesigned with a new in-line configuration and silicone rubber recoil pad fitted against the butt plate. In combination with the free floating barrel this has reduced recoil and increased reliability and accuracy.

While the rate of fire and stopping power of the MG70 was admired by users, especiially during Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT), the 20 inch barrel was criticised as being too long for use in the cramped confines of buildings. The MG70A thus has a new 18 1/2 inch barrel, and Sequoia Weaponworks have also produced a more compact version of their UMG, the MG71K, or “kurzer”, with a 16 1/2 inch barrel specifically designed for easier manoeuvreing during MOUT and for airmobile operations.

These changes are, in themselves, relatively minor but add up to a considerably improved weapon. The new machine guns have now been accepted into the Defence Forces arsenal, and plans exist to convert all existing MG70 examples to the new MG70A standard using Product Improvement Program kits supplied by the manufacturer.
