Dear Sirs,

We have recently come into possession of two Long Island- Class Escort Carriers. These are obviously obsolete ships of another era, but we are inquiring as to the feasiblility of converting them to Light Helocopter Carriers, and welcome any estimates as to refurbishment costs you have.

Thank you,

Davis Fries

Hi,

Palamoan Ship breaking Yards is capable of doing the conversion, however due to the age of the ship we advise against continued use of the ships. Most ships should be slated for decommissioning within 25 years of their launch date, however not totally required is advised. I can only guess you kept the ship in good shape. The ship is capable of being converted for light helicopter use.

Working in cooperation with a company located nearby we can facilitate the refurbishment. The basic approach would be reinforcing the landing pad and insuring the enclosing hangars are adequate. Also a high grade modern helicopter landing system could be aquired from DSE Inc. Man optionals could also be added and it depends on how much you would like to spend on the conversion. The safe number of helicopters on the ship would be two, but removal of the hangers could increase this to 4. The ship can accommodate about 1000 tons of equipment. Standard Helicpters may range from a ton to a 5 or more tons. So as long as you don't overload the ship you shouldn't have displacement issues.

Depending on the scale of the refit costs could vary. Making the ship "safe" for helicopter use would run as low as $54,000. A full conversion to modern standards would cost between $1 and $8 million. So yes it can be done.

The upper deck would be reinforced for rotor based VTOL.

Specific requests can be made and more details requested.
