Announcement from Rome:

The Roman Imperator hearby announces that the Military of Rome will be testing a conventional ICBM warhead later this evening in the Mediterranean near Sardinia.

Sextus Augustus
Imperator of Rome

IC:

Due to the seemingly constant thread of possible naval invasion, the Imperator of Rome and the Generals of the Roman Army have decided to look into ICBM systems. For this reason, an area near Sardinia in the Mediterranean had been cleared.

A single solitary Iowa Class Battleship, long out of use in the Roman Navy (which has recently been disbanded) floats near the aforementioned island...completely abandoned.

Several F-16s patrol the skies, keeping careful watch over the seas below, just in case any unwary ships might cross into the danger zone.

The time of launch comes:

In Lecce, several engineers run hither and thither, preparing for the launch of a new Trident (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trident_missile) conventional missile. A launch pad sits in the middle of a large plains...

The countdown is completed, and the missile rises up, smoke and flames bursting from the bottom of the launch pad, and a moment later, the missile skyrockets into the air, and disappears completely...

An hour later, the Imperator and the Generals of the Roman Armed Forces look down on the shattered remains, on the twisted, burnt scrap metal of what is left from the Battleship. They trade looks, and then look once more at the remains, nodding their heads. "Yes..."

Corinthian researchers recently reported unusual seismic activity originating from an area believed to be under your sovereignty. Our satellites then took several high-resolution photographs of the area, revealing what appeared to be the debris from a destroyed military vessel, possibly a battleship. We wish to know what has happened and if there is any need for alarm. Please reply.

OOC: Non-nuclear or a strategic nuclear warhead?

To West Corinthia:

We have just concluded a test of a new ICBM conventional warhead. The military vessel was obsolete. The test was a success.

OOC: You're worried about naval invasion and yet you'vedisbanded your navy, is there some IC reason for this I'm unaware of?

Also, conventional ICBMs aren't a very good idea, especially against an advanced opponent. There's a big risk theat they may mistake your launch for a nuclear attack and respond in kind.

OOC: Because I suck at naval tactics. Check out my freewebs page (http://www.freewebs.com/romanorum), and check out the coast gaurd and coastal defenses section, and you'll see why I really don't see a pressing need to use a navy.

The only problem is that the given defenses wouldn't work against aircraft carriers. The ICBMs solve that problem.

Klaxons started going off as a ICBM launch was detected. The entire room waited in aticipation as the trajectory results came in. The apperant location of the landing point would be a quarter of a world away and the people inside breathed a sigh of relief as the missile hit its intended target.

[Message to Gens Romae]
Please refrain from testing ICBMs. These are very long range weapons that can be mistaken easily for an attack. Even with your warning assaults cannot be determined for a fairly long time as the data needed comes from the termination of the burn cycle and the beginning of inertial navigation through gravity assisted freefall. These tests my be considered by some nations to be hostile if the announcement was lost in the annuls of departments as they transfer information.
