I saw on the news today and saw the video of the NY steam explosion. What are your takes on this? was it a terror attack? was it just a horrible accident? or could it have been a person's mistake?

And it was a 20" steam pipe that has been running for decades. It was covered in asbestos, that was how old it was.

This type of stuff always happens. It is only because it is a Post 9/11 thing that people actually care when minor stuff like this happens. Now even minor things like some asshole's cigarette starting a track fire becomes, "OMG TERRORISTS".

If this was a terror attack then I say it was a failed atempt. There would have been much more casualties if it was a planed attack. I believe that it could have been an industrial mistake where the streagth of the pipes that held that steam and water were miscalculated. Because of the added heat of the summer months and rain that NY has had over the past week my hypothesis is that the pipes gave out under much stress.

This happened before, Con Edision is notorious for not maintaining their energy system properly. This year there has been a blackout in Queens, Uptown New York, and a few other places. Con Edison does a very poor maintenance job with the New York energy system. You have to watch manhole covers in New York if you walk your dog, they can get electrocuted and die. What it comes down to is that Con Edison didn't do proper maintenance and the steam pipes exploded.
