Name: The Kingdom of Bautzen
Government Type: Early 1800's Constitutional Monarchy
Ruler: King George II
Population: approx. 20 mil. (exact as calculated 19.825 mil.)
Military:
1% Active, 200,000. The army retains a standing size of 140,000 men, while the navy and marines are comprised of the 60,000 remaining men. Most of the regular army is stationed along a line of fortresses running from coast to coast along the border with Urcea, with thoe remaining 40,000 comprising the Capital garrison and the garrison of Bautzen's Largest naval base. Smaller deployments are also placed in each major city or provincial capital.
The Royal Navy, seperated into the fleet and Marine sides, are comprised of 60,000 active duty soldiers largely from Bautzens largest ports and seaside provinces, who would have otherwise been destined to a post on one of Bautzens many commercial craft. They are expected to be a good deal smarter than their army comrades and all are expected to know how to read, write and preform basic arithmatic. The navy, while having some smaller 74 gun SOTL and a single 100 gun SOTL, is much more bottem heavy than most navy's with its primary role to safeguard the Kingdoms Merchant craft from pirates and privateers. The pride of the navy are its excellent frigates (based off Real Life USS Constitution, Constellation, etc.)
In addition to its standing forces all provinces are required to sustain local Militia Regiments, as well as equipping them, and keeping them prepared for an eruption of hostilities to help speed mobilization in the event of hostilities. A large number of Bautzonian commercial craft are also on the Royal Navies Reserve listing, while most are no stronger than brigs or schooners they are all required to be maintained up to naval standards, and carry weapons and a marine detatchment in times of war, conflict, or hightened tensions (as dictated by the Crown and Admiralty). Neither branches allow the "purchasing" of ones position basing it merely on a meritocratic base (theoretically).
Military Organization will be further expanded upon after this post...
Political Life/Organization:
The Kingdom is based off of the British government from the same period in RL, with several significant differences. While an Industry friendly Child Labor has been abolished, Prostitution is state controlled and regulated (think they had this but to be positive...), and women are garunteed the same wage as a man would earn for the same task (loosely enforced).
While the navy is seen as the more intelligent of the military branches, this is largely because of the widespread edification policies of the provinces nearest the Ocean and major waterways due to their increased wealth. The poverty rate is nearly triple that of the Maritime Provinces in the interior provinces and the army is portrayed as a way to advance up the socioeconomic ladder, and mustang officers are encouraged, rather than condemmed. However, one must meat the education standards set by the Navy to reach officers status, as well as the support of a current officer, and one must pass further tests to acheive brigideer or greater rank, thus encouraging education among the masses.
Culture:
Bautzen is a country moving from the old mercantilist economics into the new theory of a free market. Hard work and practicality are expected of all, icluding the old nobility. The nations maritime provinces are exceedingly wealthy due to a robust economy and a high reliance on maritime trade. The interior provinces while supportive of industry are still largely rustic, and it is there that most of Bautzen's food is grown, leading to a self sufficiance in that realm.
Freedom of the Press is an ingrained part of Bautzen's culture and has been since the liberal revolts of 50 years ago. No one is seen to be above criticism no creed, class, or nationality.
Religion:
While there is no state religion a sort of deist belief system holds much of the religious Bautzonian followers, while there is also a growing Agnostic, and Atheistic movement inside the country. However, there are those who worship nearly every major religios belief now in existence.
