Incognitia
Government type: Autocracy. There are highly influential bodies within society, however, who cannot be crossed too flagrantly or too often if the Tyrant values his position.
Ruler: John McGrath, titled The Tyrant.
Population: c. 25.985 million
Demography: a growing population, so more young people.
Military: Current size 250,000 (1% population). However part of this is the Navy (50,000 approx) and another 50,000 is the regular core around which the militia is built in time of need.
The independent unit of the army is the batallion. Comprised of about 1,000 men for an infantry battalion (somewhat less for a cavalry regiment) these are scattered around the cities and major towns of the nation. Generally gathered into brigades of 3-5 battalions, and for any sizeable operation into divisions of around 4 brigades, each battalion has a link to a certain area for recruiting and basing purposes, no matter where they happen to be deployed.
The militia is a locally based reserve force, whose basic unit is the battalion; each battalion has a number of regular officers and NCOs, with the remainder of the unit being local men who train about twice a month, and for around a week every year. As you might expect, these are not the most effective troops; however they are adequate for the purposes of civil order and defence of key points in case of invasion.
The navy, meanwhile, has a substantial force of ships of the line, primarily 74's, though with a growing number of ships with 80 guns and above.
(Still considering exactly how many SOTL to have)
Political life:
Dominated by Nescia, the capital city, being both the seat of government and major centre of commerce. The trading magnates of Nescia wield considerable influence with government. The rising power of industry, in large measure outside Nescia due to the siting of the necessary resources, has begun to build a counter-balance to Nescia's central position, and cities such as Nesais and Dunkennen are becoming more significant.
The internal conflicts brought into being by the tension between old-style merchants, new-style industrialists and the remnants of the very-old-style nobility are yet to be resolved.
Culture:
A mercantile, industrious state, Incognitia has not traditionally been overly interested in wars of expansion; the dense population of her territory is one of many signs of this fact.
However her armed forces are adept and well-practiced, as a result of her wealth gained by trading.
The culture reflects this, respecting hard work and practical values, and seeing soldiers not as heroes but as guardians, and somewhat akin to a more violent town watch...keeping order so that serious business can continue.
The rejection of censorship as a means of social control permits a vibrant, often raucous free press, with theatre and the like not far behind. Everything is mocked, including religion...
Religiously, Incognitians tend to follow Ifni, Lady Luck, though other religions are tolerated; peasantry in the countryside are more pagan than anything else, with old festivals based around solstices and harvest time predominating.
