Hammer and Sickle uprising in Verenberg (open)

Verenberg Communists
14-07-2007, 12:42
Gorwensky sat at a small table of a street cafe in Konigsberg the Capital of the Verenberg Empire and heart of its Imperialist rule of Kaiser Konrad von Mannstein

he scratached his face covered in short dark stubble and rested his hands on his pronouced cheek bones as he read the Verenberg National News paper the "Imperial Chronical", the main story being of Verenberg's radical re-armament mainly through their allies the oppressors Lyras, first in the form of 5000 LY3 MBT as well as production rights, and now Production rights to the LY4 the cutting edge in Armoured technology, the Socialist millitas where falling desperatly behind in terms of technology and Training, Verenberg's standard of living was at an all time high as was their morale and National Pride and love for their Kaiser, as well as reclaiming lost regions neiboring Verenebrg that were lost to war a century ago, which these subsequent regions kick started the Verenberg Warmachine, another thing that worried the Socialists of Verenberg was that the Kaiser had joined the "New Prussian Empire" a brotherhood of Germanic Nations known for their skills and wit in War and Politics and also the ruthlessness for the previous

the high command of the Verenberg Communists needed to remind the People and the Kaiser they were still there,

Gorwensky folded the news paper and put some money on the table as he finished his coffe, he looked at the coins with the Kaisers head imprinted on them, he was disgusted by this ancient leaders sight,

he stood up and walked away leaving behind a tip for the waitress and his breifcase under the table, the long ground length table cloth hid this well, as he got around the corner he pulled out his mobile and pressed a few butten moments later there was a huge explosion Gorwensky kept walking with out missing a beat, troops that patrolled the streets streamed past him as he walked running to the disaster.

he walked away with his chin held high and a smile on his face the first shots of the new war were beginning not just for Verenberg but her allies as well

There is a Marine expiditionary force at sea carrying a heavy brigade of mechanized infantry. Their battlegroup can arrive within 4 days and includes fixed wing, combat helicopter and cruise missile support.

the Kaiser stood on his balcony of his bed chamber looking out over his Imperial Capital, the blast had woken him and know he could see billowing black smoke rising from a street in the distance, he turned and saw one of his field marshals standing behind him,

Kaiser-"mobilize the Army"

Field Marshal-"my Kaiser most of our seasoned troops are in Lyras having War games"

Kaiser-"mobilise what we have and activate the 1st Volks-Sturm Divsion"

Field Marshal-"yes my Kaiser"

We also urge nations outside of the NPE not to interfere without NPE permission, as it may force the NPE to commit to military action against your nation.

Almost immediately after recieving word of the uprising, 5 Kampferian Spartan soldiers began suiting up to insert in Verenberg. They would get all the tools, as there was no need to blend in this time, like in the Blackhelm Confederacy.

the Captain of the Guards at the 1st Volks Armoury opened the huge iron gates ready for the influx of Home Guard arming them selves, as he turned and was about to walk in the compound he stopped suddenly, as he heard what could be described as "Market Place Chatter" as he turned he saw a huge mob walking up the street waving Red Flags, he dropped his keys and ran inside

the explosion on the other side of the city was a perfect distraction as the fort was only at 40% in terms of man power, as well as the deployment of troops in foreign lands the Communists had chosen a perfect time to rise up

****************SEVERAL HOURS LATER***********

officer-"my Kaiser we have just received word that the Communists have ransacked the Armoury in the Mannheim district and escaped with all munitions and killed most troops and captured around 50"

Kaiser-"BLAST, what do we have left"

Officer-" our Armour is overseas or in the commonwealth states mainly at the Panzer HQ in the Razarn Valley, which also goes for our seasoned infantry which are mostly over seas with the rest at the infantry HQ in Uber-Flaugarn"

Kaiser-"what do we have in this city"

Officer-"we have the first run of LY4's about 50 in total, 80 LY3's as well as supporting troops, as well as the 1st Konigsberg Infanterie Division, the 12 Ersatz Division still under taking training, and what ever you call up of the home guard"

Kaiser-"Meine Gott, i want troops deployed around the palace, give word all troops conducting war games are to come home immediatly, contact our allies we will need there help", as he stood looking out over his city a tear rolled down his cheek

C-130s and C-5 transport aircraft begin landing the CCM Rapid Deployment Brigade begin to land at the capital city. They begin coordinating with the local authorities setting up strong points around the capital city and airport.

The CCM troops of the RDF are well equipped and and highly diciplined. It is easy to see that well trained and know percisely what they are doing.

By dawn an entire Brigade of Mechanized Infantry has landed consisting of AT, IFV, Fire support, Ambulance and Command variants of the trim little Strykers. Most of the Strykers carry squads of 8 soldiers in body armor further subdivided into two fire teams of four. Sniper teams of two took up positions on the highest rooftops.

The RDF's mobile command post launches a Predator UAV to give the Brigade commander some idea of what the tactical situation looks like. They set up a data link to the Verenberg command post to share the information.

An Air mobile division of marines are forming up for transport.

The Illustrious Carrier Battle Group began moving toward Verenberg as soon as word of the uprising reached the Commonwealth. Close aboard were the Inchon and the Okinawa: two WASP class Marine Assault vessels carrying a Marine Expiditionary task force, their heavy equipment and their air support. Rounding up the core of the convoy is the Battleship Resolve, the UNRep ships Catalina and Midland and the fleet oilers Highland and Northshore.

The Taniat class Air Defense cruisers San Juan and Santa Crus and the AEGIS cruisers Constution and Independence formed the task forces inner ring. The outer ring is composed of Arleigh Burke class Carson and Simpson and Lancer class heavy destroyers Anderson and Mason. It is rounded out by Perry class ASW frigates Anderson and Summers.

Sprinting and drifting ahead of the task force are Allegro class nuclear attack subs Great White, Mako and Hammerhead.

Their orders: Hold Verenburg's Capital until relieved.

zhankov's step quickened as he walked down a main street of Konigsberg, he stopped at a phone box and went in, he pulled a necklace from around his neck and on it, a small red star, he kissed and put it back, he looked inside the inner pocket of his over coat and made sure the grenade was ready, he walked around the corner and saw the NPE joint diplomatic building, out side there were several guards from around the NPE as well as some
Verenberg Volkssturm (VVS) armed with old K98k's, he kept walking, suddenly he broke into a run, as he ran past and revealed a Mk 98 stick grenade, he tossed it through the window, which smashed immediately, within a few seconds it blew, and splinters and broken glass consumed the entrance to the building, the Guards astonished, realized what happened, a soldier of the VVS cocked and raised his old rifle, the yelled
"HALT"
no reply from Zhankov who didn't break step
by now the other Guards had raised there rifles in a similar motion
"HALT"
then the young VVS soldier fired, the other guards following his lead realeased a Volley into the man who fell immediately, when the guards came to check the body they found the man had died with a smile on his face

Major Mikhail Lonieda sat in his simple wooden chair in the office he had been given when the United Socialist States of Zintharia had joined the UN, the same day he had been appointed Commandant of Foreign Affairs in the Foreign Affairs Bureau. As the representative of the USSZ abroad, he worked eighteen hour shifts, monitoring the activities of his nation's allies and enemies.

As he sat back and sipped more of the Zintharian Vodka that the government supplied to all of its bureaus, a Private rushed in with a telegram.

"Yes Comrade?"

"A telegraph arrived from Comrade Cole who is at the World Socialist Conference. It's marked for your security level and FYEO."

Lonieda flinched. Letters from the Marshal of the USSZ weren't normal letters. They meant things were going down.

He took it and read it.

TO MAJ LONIEDA, STOP.
COMRADES IN VERENBURG REVOLTING AGAINST BOURGEOISIE, STOP.
COMRADES REQUESTING AID,STOP.
I AM MOBILIZING ELEMENTS OF THE 78TH APS UNDER SRSGT BRIAN WINTERS, STOP.
WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE, STOP.

Lonieda ran his hand through his hair, and then picked up the telephone.

"This is Lonieda. Get SGTMAJ Winters, his troops are needed again."

The voice of the female operator responded.

"Name of the Operation Comrade?"

"Operation Hammer and Sickle."

Six days later,Senior Sergeant Winters stood once again near the back of a C-130 Hercules as it neared the Capital of Verenberg. For the second time in two months, the 13th Spetsnaz Airborne was being mobilized to aid in the overthrow of a capitalist pig-dog government.

This time though, they were staying until the job was done.

This time, they had a platoon of T-90's coming in with them.

This time, they were gonna kill some capitalist scum.

After the horrid night-jump, Winters telephoned HQ from deep in a jungle cavern, relieved that at least 100 of the original 200 paratroops hit the ground.

"This is HQ Comrade. What's the news in Verenburg?"

"The security is damn near impossible to get through. The Commonweath set up so much of it I lost half of the whole force getting down."

"Continue with the plan regardless of losses. Glory to the Worker Comrade."

"Glory to the Worker."

------------------------------------------------------------------------
That night, a squad of SA paratroopers, enacting their plan, rush down the back alleys of the capital, phantoms in the cold night, to the biggest bank they can find. Their, they set white phosphorous explosives and C4, then rush away.

That morning, as the influx of wealthy bankers and civilians reaches it's peak, the bombs are detonated, killing 212 and setting fires in the area.

All that's left is a small poster, floating in the wind, saying
"DEATH TO THE MODERN CAPITALIST!"

Warmarshall Leon Krell Lyras for the Kaiser.

91st, 129th and 285th Army Groups are enroute to Verenberg. They, together, represent 81 Lyran divisions, including 12 divisions of LY3A2 Warhounds, and 4 of the LY4 Wolfhounds. Our primary uncertainty is what you want us to do upon arrival. This is not an invasion we are countering. It is civil disturbance, and I doubt the communists will stand up and fight with honour. So the question is, what are our rules of engagement?

I'm just trying to establish what parameters apply to our forces. To: Field Marshal von Deiltzen, Chief of Verenberg Defence Force
From: Commander, Lyran Task Force Epsilon

91st Army Group will be first to hit, with 122nd Army landing via air corridor at the Lyran base near Konigsberg, while 224th arrives via amphibious landing to the north of Heidelheim. 643rd and 1157th Mech Inf divisions will proceed south, establishing our presence and clearing the border regions, while 198th Mech Inf Corps and 15th Armoured Corps will swing south of Kaiser's Haven and east towards the Dalouzian Mountains. 198th and 15th Armoured will be supported by the 88th Artillery Brigade, detached from 439th Corps.

229th Army has a harder job of it. 14th Marine Assault Corps will dock at Kaiser's Haven, by force if necessary, and use it to supply itself and 224th Army from Lyras by sea. 18th Marine Assault Corps will land in the far north of Uber-Flaugarn, just to the east of the Dalouzian Mountains. That is the point that we most expect to be contested. Landing further east, but earlier and (hopefully) able to support will be 92nd Corps, consisting of 95th and 678th Mechanised Infantry Divisions, and 44th Motorised. 92nd Corps will then, in tandem with 18th Marine Assault Corps, turn west and fight their way along the mountains.

Once firm in-theatre, 122nd Army will advance north, 32nd Mech Inf Corps in the van, with 29th Artillery Corps in direct support, and 21st Armoured Corps as operational reserve.

We have indicated the manoeuvers that we would like you to carry out in support, although we aren't privy to exactly which of your units is which.

Be aware that we are relying on your air force to provide top cover, as we are too far away from our bases for force projection. Once Kaiser's Haven is secured, we'll use Kaiser Haven airport.

If you have any amendments you suggest, I'm perfectly happy to hear them.

OOC: Posted with permission from Lach-land.

IC: Whatever 98th Armoured Division was, subtle it most certainly wasn’t. It didn’t occur to Lieutenant-General Elderman just what the treads on his vehicles were doing to the surfacing of the road, or the crops over which they were driving. Not that anyone would honestly have expected that to be of any concern to him. Of far more concern was trying to keep his signaller answering and transmitting the constant requests for “situational updates” from all corners of the globe, or so it seemed. And now, something new.

On their left, a hostile airbourne infantry division, the Lach-lander 13th, right smack bang along the path of one of Verenberg's infantry corps' route, had made contact, and the fight was heating up. It would have been a losing battle, in the long run, a division against two full corps, with another behind it, and with a further full corps of artillery in support. But they had done well, and had focussed on engaging one Verenberg unit at a time. The single division had more than pulled its weight, and had held the Verenberg 28th Infantry long enough for the Lach-lander 43rd Airbourne Armoured Division to hit their flank. 28th had retreated in disarray, but the lead elements of the Lyran 21st Armoured Corps were just arriving on scene.

98th Armoured's job, as part of the Lyran 21st Armoured Corps, was to take out the Lach-land armoured support, a full glider-borne armoured division that, after driving back the Verenberg 28th now held the communist left flank.

A million thoughts were running through his head, most of them leaving nought but whispers on his
subconscious. Battle. Adrenaline. Fear. Confidence. Terror. Duty. Delight. Exhilaration.
Panic. Calculation.

Orders.

98th Armoured had a job, and HIS job was to see it done… and he would.

“Corporal, what did command say that Communist unit was?”

“Their 43rd Armoured division, sir. The Verenberg garrison forces hit them pretty hard though,
and the Loyalist 28th Infantry division fought well. Until they broke.”

A full armoured division. But it was airbourne… meaning light, air transportable, but normally well motivated and trained. Airbourne. Great at getting places quick, but not so crash hot at killing things once they got there. Morale would probably be high, at the recent success, but perhaps declining quickly as word of what was coming towards them spread. Not that anyone ever liked the thought of fighting Lyras.

That and the fact that Elderman had faith in his tanks’ explosive-reactive armour, and the
crews that were manning their ETC-fired 120mm main guns, meant that he had far more confidence
than one would expect from a divisional commander being faced with a nominally equal formation.

He pondered a little longer. Airbourne Armoured. It had approached the Verenberg unit's
positions from the east. Would have had the division's armoured units in the van on contact, and then following through to pursue the Verenberg infantry as it withdrew, as per doctrine. The armoured units would have been fighting the infantry units for the longest, and would have either been bogged down, or at least held up fractionally. If nothing else, the crews would be a little more tired, and down on ammunition. There was very little chance of rapid resupply, and that played into the Lyran-Verenberg coalition's hands. That division would have left its lighter cavalry or mechanised elements to screen their left, conveniently right in front of where the 98th would be coming. Not a bad strategy. It was probably pretty happy with itself, riding high on the success that had been tanks, even if they were light ones, against infantry.

It was about to become substantially less happy…

Elderman barked out orders to his frantically overworked signaller, who rushed to get everything out onto the Cromwell.

“Tell 415th Brigade to move east, and advance to contact. Then slide them further out,
and around to hit the 43rd from the north-east. 416th and 417th Brigades head straight up the guts, and call down indirect from the 504th . See if you can get some Verenberg aviation elements to harass their recon, and buy 415th Bde some time to get in position, and give the infantry time to withdraw.”

A couple of seconds passed before the corporal responded.

“Yes, sir, uploading now.”

Elderman broke into a feral grin. He was finally going to have a chance to put into
practice his Division’s motto. Thunder and lightning. No ifs. No buts. His men were the
hammer of justice, and, cliched as it was, Elderman was genuinely happy for that fact.
Tyranny’s walls coming down under his guns.

And, paraphrasing the immortal words of Caesar crossing the Rubicon… the die had been
cast. A quick glance to his right saw the lead echelons of 415 Bde peeling away to the
regiment’s right. There was something more than slightly exhilarating about driving a
tank at 70kph across open ground.

Another thought breezed through his mind.

‘At least the civilians were smart enough to stay indoors.’

***

There are few things that a main battle tank truly fears. Sure, there are annoyances.
Men with anti-tank weapons are dangerous, but not overly so. The MBT’s weapon’s load-out
out ranges infantry weapons by a notable margin. Light armour, APCs and anti-tank
B-vehicles, such as Humvees with TOW missiles, also feature as foes that make it to the
comm-net. Other main battle tanks feature highly.

But the things that top the list, and with good reason, are gunship helicopters. High
firepower, high mobility, and usually attacking from a vector that few tanks can engage.
Frequently also remarkably survivable.

And, prowling the skies, was a squadron of the things that were attached to 32nd Mechanised Corps.

“Ironside-Sunray, this is Pegasus-Actual, Hotel-Whiskey-Zulu, over”

“Pegasus-Actual, Ironside-Sunray. Zulu-Tango-Tango. Callsign Thunderhead. I say again,
Thunderhead.”

“Pegasus-Actual acknowledges. Good luck, Ironside.”

“Amen to that. Ironside-Sunray, out”.

CAPT Geier looked down at the gunner in the seat below and ahead of him. He was young,
but capable, and didn’t show much of the tension he was doubtlessly feeling. Geier
toggled his mike.

“Good to go, Matty?”

“Yea, sir. As good as I’ll ever be…”

Geier frowned. He hadn’t expected the ell-tee to voice the last bit. Perhaps the tension
was getting to him after all. That’s why they’d been trained though. So that they can
operate effectively while the mind is in neutral. Or stalled. Or, whatever…

“All Pegasus units, this is Pegasus-Actual. We’ve got Thunderhead. Initiate.”

Acknowledgements came back over Geier’s headset.

“Two”

“Three”

“Four”

“We are good to go. Let’s move…”

And with that, the captain pushed his bird’s nose forward, and dived to rooftop height,
weaving between the higher buildings, IR sensors searching for targets… and there they
were. The 43rd was about to get far more uncomfortable, Geier thought, as his flight
moved from south to south-east, circling around the southern elements of the hostile
formation.

“Actual, this is 4 with a bird-dog.” Bird-dog. A recon-report. Tamany had spotted
something.

“Go ahead, 4”.

“India-Romeo contact to the north, platoon strength, mounted, B-type.”

“Copy that. All units, be advised we have spotted the vanguard of the Verenberg 28th. Bumping it
up.”

Geier swung his helicopter further to the south, to the location that Tamany had
indicated. Sure enough, a quartet of APC/IFVs were set-up, hull down, just behind a hedgerow.

“Ironside-Sunray, this is Pegasus-Actual, bird-dog, over”.

***

LTGEN Elderman heard the radio signal, and hazarded a guess at its contents. It was
either the southernmost of the 43rd’s units, or the vanguard of the 28th. That or
something had gone seriously FUBAR.

“Go ahead, Pegasus-Actual.”

“We have spotted what we believe to be the van of the 28th, platoon of
India-Foxtrot-Victors, holed up to the south of our patrol route. They do not, I say
again, do not appear to be moving. Request additional confirmation of orders.”

Elderman had halfway been hoping for the question. While the air assets he had tactical control of were handy, more handy would be getting the Verenberg infantry fighting again.

“Pegasus-Actual, if, and only if, able, perform a low-speed formation fly-by of
positions occupied by 28th Mech Infantry. Upon completion of that, proceed on prior
tasking”.

Geier’s eyebrows rose in unison. What the blazes was the colonel thinking?!?! A LOW
speed FORMATION flypast?!? Was he completely out of his mind. This was an operational
environment, not a damned airshow at Castelgate or for Asgarnian dignitaries. This wasn’t
about impressing…

Then the man caught himself… what if it was…

Who knew? A show of strength to re-assure their allies might actually be a very good
idea.

“Acknowledged. Pegasus out”.

Geier breathed out slowly. The next relay of orders would be interesting, he thought, as
he watched the four-barrelled gattling cannon turn to the left as his gunner panned to
either side.

“Lead to all units, form up on me, commemoration-pattern. We’re doing a friendly low and
slow over the 28th, over.”

Two seconds passed.

The silence was deafening. Geier actually began to wonder if he’d remembered to toggle
the ‘transmit’ button on his headset, when he got a response that he, perhaps, should
have expected.

“Authenticate, hotel papa zulu”

The Lyran captain couldn’t help but chuckle to himself as he frantically looked through
the authentication list he’d received at the start of the sortie. The order he’d just
given was so whacked that he wasn’t even slightly surprised. He mentally scolded himself
for his lack of fore-sight before replying.

“Pegasus-Lead, authenticating, echo sierra zulu. Yes, you heard the order right, bizarre
as it sounds, acknowledge, over.”

This time, the acknowledgments came through much faster than the first, and Geier
grinned. Who ever said that formation flying wasn’t applicable to combat situations...

The line of helicopters flew over the northernmost elements of the 28th Mobile Infantry,
rotor blades pounding at the sky. Only one bit of info remained to be forwarded.

“Pronto Major, this is Pegasus Lead, message, over”.

The voice of one of Lyran command's multitudinous signal operators came back very quickly, and
with a faint edge of excitement to it. Real war, no matter the success of training, or the realism, was still different. If FELT different. Smelled different. Had an edge to it that just... was.

“Pegasus Lead, this is Pronto Major, go ahead, over.”

“Pronto Major, Pegasus Lead, requesting permission to transit sector seven, echo to
whisky, over.”

The response was again rapid, and in the affirmative.

“Affirmative, Pegasus Lead. Uploading authorised transit corridor now.”

A series of yellow flashing diamond-shaped icons appeared on Geier’s head up display.
Flying right over 28th Mechanised Infantry’s positions. Which was a good thing. As it was
kinda the objective…

“Pegasus Flight, this is Pegasus Lead. Begin run in zero-five minutes, over”

“Two”

“Three”

“Four”

The four gunships turned and lazily circled over the 28th’s positions, downdraft
rattling windows as they moved. More than one Verenberg soldier looked up and
waved. It was nice to be cheered, thought the captain, as he nosed down and lead his
aerial column on a loop through the 28th’s airspace.

***

415th Bde was charging across Verenberg's countryside at speeds which would probably be
unsafe if the vehicles were not, literally, tanks. 98th Armoured’s two-pronged attack on the
43rd relied on 415th Bde getting into position quickly, and effectively, especially if
casualties were to be minimised prior to the second phase of operations. All units, not
only of 415th , but also 416th and 417th , were on edge, and barely a word was being spoken
throughout the division.

CPL Edward Markosian, turret gunner, was in his tank near the van of 416th Bde. A thick,
heavy-set man, most of his compatriots wondered what he was doing in the armoured corps,
rather than infantry. He was also jovial, outgoing, and expressive, decidely not the Lyran stereotype. And everyone wondered how he managed to get himself into that far-too-cramped gunner’s seat.

Below him, the chief, SGT Grey, sat immobile, the com-net earphones over his ears. He
listened to them religiously, as if fearful that he’d miss the go signal, while
Markosian chatted endlessly about the enormous fish he was going to catch when they went
on rotation back to 459th Battery near the Fehnmari border. Leif, the driver,
recited his litany of woes and worries, not that anyone was really listening to him.

“The suspension feels a bit out. Don’t know if I’ll be able to get us anywhere with this rustbucket.”

Leif always made the same complaint. He always complained about the suspension, or the steering, or the Cromwell's uplink, or the rear cameras... then proceeded to dodge or hit everything in sight, and some things that weren’t.

“And the fan. The bloody air con fan clicks. It’s bad enough in here when the fan IS working,
but the damn thing still clicks.”

Markosian piped up in response.

“Have you tried taking it apart and oiling it?”

“Yeah, three times now. Bloody thing still clicks.”

“Could try taking it to one of the techs…”

The words were barely out of the corporal’s mouth when the chief butted in.

“You’ll do no such thing. Tech’s have got bigger things to worry about than a clicking
fan.”

Leif’s mouth split into a grin. Here was a chance to fret about something else.

“Like what, chief?”

The chief’s face scrunched in concentration while he pondered the question. The man may
have had the padded comm-net earpieces jammed hard over his ears, but he still didn’t
miss a thing that went on in his tank.

“Like getting the Verenberg 28th Mechanised back on its feet. Who'd have guessed that the commies could have brought armour in so quickly?”

Leif brought the tank to a halt in line with another on its left. They were now sitting at the jump off point. Leif was still grinning.

“How could they do that chief? Bet they've got something else big, huh?”

“Shut it Leif.”

“If it could do that to a division, that fast, what could it do to us? They could
probably blow us into a million itty bitty bits. Huh, chief? BOOM”

He emphasised his point by throwing his hands apart in the universal representation of
an explosion. They struck with a muffled thump against the spall liner.

“I said shut it, Leif.”

There was no real rancour in the chief’s voice. All knew that it was just the man’s way
of dealing with the tension.

A tense silence descended on the tank, once again. It wasn’t long before Lief piped up
again.

“So, a man walks into a bar, and the bartend…”

“That’s it folks”

SGT Grey butted in, pulling his microphone down in front of his mouth.

“Orders are in on Cromwell. We’re up…”

Leif gunned the engine again, and suddenly the crew was all business. No longer were
they three men that had been cooped up in a tank for too long. They were a tank crew from the Lyran Protectorate Army. The transition would have been, to an outsider, remarkable to watch.

“Good timing, chief.” Markosian said. “Multiple thermal contacts, bearing zero eight
nine, up five. Dismounted infantry initial assessment, possibly forward recon element.”

Leif was next.

“Second contact, 300 metres, nil engine signature, visual only. MBT, type unknown.”

The chief’s voice was grim as he responded.

“Closing speed. Fire at will.”

The tank rumbled forward, and a rumble was heard from the main gun of a sister tank,
seconds before Markosian’s 120mm smoothbore belched a sabot round forward. A communist tank’s turret came off the body atop a pillar of flame, before crashing earthward twenty metres away.

The man depressed his fingers on the firing switch for the 25mm co-axial, as he watched the targeting monitors. His point of impact was indicated by a line of tracers, looking for all the world like a laser beam from a b-grade science fiction movie. The man gave a small whoop of
exultation. The action was too far removed from reality. It was almost like a video
game, and he was winning.

A communist tank fired back, HEAT round impacting the ground in front of the
right track. Leif swerved left to avoid it, and Markosian held his fire until the
tank squared up again.

The second shot also flew true, brief flash of light silhouetting the tank from the
inside out.

***

Not that he’d admit it, but Colonel Wilde was terrified. The incarnation of his worst
nightmare was coming to pass. Stuck in hostile territory, with enemy tanks pushing his unit on the flank, while it was facing the wrong direction.

Wilde wasn’t a party sycophant. Nor was he a career savvy desk-jock with good
connections. He reserved that sentiment for some of his superiors. You had to be
political to make past one-star, unless you were particularly good. Wilde hadn’t gone
that far.

And, mere moments after looking at the remote feed for an infra-red camera on the side
of his command tank, the two vaguely tank-shaped objects had both flared briefly, then
the remote screen had gone blank. An explosive rumble had swept across the mound behind
which the colonel was sitting, and the ear-splitting roar had drowned at sound for a
number of seconds, amid a shower of earth, scrap and rubble.

When the man picked himself up a couple of seconds later, his hand flew to his holster
and drew his service pistol, a 9 shot Makarov. Sticking his head up over the earthen
mound, he took stock of what had just happened.

And then wished he hadn’t. Four tanks. Big ones. If his briefing was right, Wolfhounds. The absolute worst thing that could be attacking him, at that very moment. He pulled his head back down as a line of tracers snaked towards his head, kicking up more dust and slamming through the top of his makeshift cover. He heard screams from his left, and watched as one of his men staggered up along the embankment, one remaining arm clutching his intestines, desperately trying to keep them in his abdomen. A tracer shifted. The screams stopped, and the body rolled down next to
Wilde.

He gulped. Without him in the loop, his men would be sitting ducks. He almost shouted
for joy, then, when he saw the radio lying three feet from his position.

He scrambled over to it, and looked at the casing. It was dented, but intact. A couple
of quick taps on the transmit key indicated that it was still functioning. He put the
handset to his ear, and bent over as another shell shook the ground he was standing on.
The roar of the tanks’ engines was getting closer, and he knew it wouldn’t be long
before he had to leave.

He began speaking into the mouthpiece far more coherently than one might be expected to,
rattling off orders in defiance of his precarious position.

“This is Colonel Wilde to all units, we are under attack, I say again, we are under attack. There are hostile armoured units advancing, from the east, in force. All available anti-armour units, close and engage. Close and engage, acknowledge.”

The attack had been expected. Rumours of the advancing Lyrans had spread like wildfire,
and hesitation about whether the Verenberg communists were worth supporting had evaporated at the fear of imminent death at the hands of Lyran tanks.

“58, acknowledge” 58th Airbourne Infantry Brigade. The primary infantry formation of the
division. Down to 2/3rd strength.

“12, acknowledge” 12th Armoured Brigade. A formation that would be lucky to make battalion
strength after the mauling the Verenberg infantry units had given it. But a tank formation,
nonetheless.

“94, acknowledge” 94th Airbourne Mechanised. The unit that had fought hardest in repulsing the
attack by the 28th. A shadow of what they were, but good, solid and reliable troops.

Wilde paused. Where was the other brigade headquarters?

“108-niner, radio check, over.”

The silence on the other end of the line was deafening in its completeness.

“94, relay to…”

And then, Colonel Wilde had a thought. He interrupted his radio signal, and sprang to
his feet. He’d waited too long. The enemy tanks wouldn’t be far away. He had to move.
The thought went through his head in a fraction of a second, as he got up to sprint back
to the nearest cover to shelter from the incoming tanks.

That was also the last thought to cross his mind. For the next thing that popped into
his head was 7.62mm of blended metal. One could have said that he died a good, noble
death.

But no one saw it. And so sixteen sorely needed years of military experience flew to the
after-life, chased on its way by the whoop of a Lyran army corporal, and the staccato
bark of a heavy machine gun.

***

94th Mech was 43rd Armoured’s most experienced unit. While mechanised, it was a “heavy
mech” formation, and included a tank battalion sprinkled in alongside the two mechanised
infantry battalions, which allowed for its presence as part of an armoured division.

In practice, that now meant about two companies of tanks, and a battalion and a half of
mechanised infantry. But the formation, along with 108th Armoured, had fought off the
attack by Verenberg’s 28th Mechanised Infantry Division, so its under-strength status could be excused.

Of course, when two regiments manage to repulse a division, those two regiments rarely
emerge unscathed. Admittedly both sides of that engagement had fought hard. The two
regiments in question were very heavy formations, and the 28th was a mechanised infantry
formation, not an armoured one. But the three infantry and one mechanised
unit that Verenberg had thrown in had effectively broken the two communist units, although the communists still held the field.

And what was left of 94th Mech was rushing to the south to hold up the advance of the two
brigades of Lyran tanks. Central command within the 43rd was a very iffy thing. And
the huge Lyran LY4 Wolfhound main battle tanks were very, very hard to kill.

Hence what was left of the 94th charged to the south. The 108th, down to barely company
strength, and with no command structure worthy of the name, clustered together in
section and platoon sized units, holding 43rd’s east, on the off chance that someone attacked again.

108th was thus in a very poor position to do much more than batten down the hatches on
its tanks when 32nd Mech's aviation element began making their first attack runs.

The attack helicopters, designed as they were to hunt down tanks and light armour, were
in an anti-tank helicopter’s dream. A large number of stationary tanks clumped together,
with nothing by the way of effective air defence or concealment of any kind.

The lead helicopter pirouetted in the air, turning seventy-five degrees to its left, and
angling its nose down. The second continued along its course, skimming over the farms
and meadows of the north Verenberg countryside, while the third and fourth mirrored the lead’s movements, and slid in alongside it. There was a brief pause, then the helicopters drifted forward,
rocket pods moving left and right as the gunners swivelled their helmet-mounted
targeting cameras to select targets. The communist tanks, as with all tanks, had their thinnest armour on their upper surfaces, and that was precisely where the gunners aimed. The tanks lit up like firecrackers, and those that didn’t caught light quickly. In less than a minute, tank crews were piling out of their tanks, en-masse.

Geier watched as the men – there were no women, as far as he could tell – fled on foot,
or cowered in their holes. They all stuck out, clear as day on the thermal imager. He
switched to visual. A handful of them were improvising white flags out of their
underwear. He chuckled to himself. Fair enough. Whatever worked. He was under orders to
give quarter where possible. And he was happy for that. Infinitely easier on his
conscience, as well. Verenberg would need forced labour come war's end. Or scape goats to put on trial.

This part of the battle was over. Whatever formation that bad been here would no longer
offer organised resistance.

“Ironside alpha niner, this is Pegasus lead. Strut. I say again, strut.” Geier was
laughing to himself. The pre-arranged go-code was a joke. But it was funny.

As was the delay in response.
“Pegasus Lead, this is Ironside alpha niner. Acknowledged. You’re early, over.”

“Ironside alpha niner, roger that. Pegasus lead, out.”

415th Brigade, 98th Armoured Division, 21st Armoured Corps, began to move.

Enemy offering resistance in the south were few and far between. Here and there a
solitary communist tank stood its ground. But “here and there” was the correct
turn of phrase.

Geier saw a Wolfhound swing left to emplace along a road and allow its trailing elements to
continue. What Geier didn’t see, until too late, was the lighter communist tank, dug in behind a house, with its main gun pointing straight down the road. Its engine was off. No thermal output. And, unless spotted with the Mk I eyeball, invisible.

The first that the Lyran tank crews knew of it was when the 105mm main gun on the crouching
tank fired at one of their own. And at less than two hundred metres, it couldn’t miss.

It didn’t. The FLIR showed a line streak out from one tank to spear another, and an explosion blossomed on the hull of the Lyran tank. Geier found himself holding his breath while the dust cleared… just in time to watch the battered but intact Wolfhound return fire, and knock the target's turret off the rest of the tank. Remarkably, it did not catch fire. Men scrambled out of the tank, waving their arms frantically. To their credit, the Lyran's tank crew did not open fire. To do so would have been a dishonour, and would discredit the Protectorate.

Geier brought his chopper down, and buzzed the communist tank crew. They flinched, bringing
their hands up towards their heads at the low-slow overflight.

108th had ceased to exist.

***

In fact, 43rd Armoured Division was falling apart. Already seriously depleted by
engagements along multiple fronts, with numerically superior forces, and with a senior
command structure rapidly degrading, its time frame for conducting organised resistance
was contracting quickly.

The divisional commander was dead. Had been for a while. Colonel Wilde, the 2IC, was MIA,
presumed dead. 108th Armoured was only responding sporadically, and what it was reporting wasn’t good. 12th Armoured, 94th Mechanised and 58th Mobile Infantry were, together, down to the equivalent of two battalions strength. Colonel Aiken, the CO of 94th Mech, flinched along with his compatriots when their command post shook as a nearby tank blew sky high.

“We’re not going to hold them long, gents.” He said.

His two colleagues looked at him, wordless. They knew. They had to know. The enemy
formation, unknown though it was, was at least regimental strength, and the tanks they
were using were easily 20% larger than anything that the communist alliance in Verenberg fielded. They would have suffered tremendously fighting against it when they were at full strength. Which
they were not. And their own airforce, damn them all to hell, were giving them no support at all, still caught up in a swirling dogfight somewhere to the northwest. The enemy helicopters were breaking any attempted line before it could form up.

He turned his gaze from the map table to his two rank-peers. Colonel Martin, CO of the
eight… another explosion outside corrected him – seven… tanks that made up what was left
of 12th Armoured looked at Aiken, and nodded. Aiken then swivelled from Martin to the
commander of 58th Mobile Infantry. The 58th was the only semi-coherent unit they had
left. 94th, while still fighting, was fighting a losing battle. It’s mechanised formations, such an asset in most circumstances, were barely denting the enormous tanks they were fighting against. Their TOW missiles were finding the active defence systems and explosive reactive armour of the Lyran tanks a tremendous challenge. And each vehicle lost represented a growing proportion of their fighting strength.

Colonel Mathers, then, was the last hurdle. If the 58th chose to go on, then they would
all go on. And, as the most intact formation left, Mathers was the most likely to continue fighting. More worryingly, Mathers had long been a disciple of communist theory. He had been loyal to a fault, to the ideal's name. No deed was to dark, to crime to heinous, if it were following the path to the radiant future, or its orders, desires or intent. He had a great deal to answer for. And Aiken was almost positive that he was not ready to answer for them.

Sure enough, Mathers’ eyes set, and his posture straightened. A slight, but perceptible
curl of his lips broadcast his intentions.

“We are officers of the Lach-land People's Army. We have our orders, direct from the hands
of our Commander-in-Chief”.

Aiken wouldn’t have been at all surprised if Mathers had added “his beneficent holiness”
or an “amen” in there somewhere, had the phrase applied in true communist states. But the man was still going.

“And you are actually proposing to surrender to these capitalist pigs? You are traitors to the state. No. We fight, and if we must, we die.”

Aiken put his hand on his service pistol, cleared it past the holster, pointed it at the
man, and pulled the trigger.

Mathers went down, screaming, and clutching his stomach. He writhed on the ground,
trypsin enzymes from his punctured stomach burning his flesh around the wound. Aiken
took two paces forward, and stood over the prone man, then pointed the pistol at him.

“I will not WASTE my men. I will not throw them away on the altar of vain glory. Nor
will I let you sacrifice YOURS to the treads of Lyran tanks.”

Aiken knelt next to the dying man, and whispered in his right ear.

“Nor will I let you send them to their deaths to protect you from your crimes. You,
Colonel…” Aiken almost spat the last word at him… “have much to answer for…”

The CO of the 94th Mechanised regiment pulled himself up, and took careful aim with the
weapon in his right hand.

Colonel Mathers watched the pistol level on him, and thought to himself, fleetingly,
that the muzzle looked wide enough to park a hummer in. Then Aiken pulled the trigger,
and the world went white.

Colonel Martin hadn’t moved, although he did now, folding his arms, and scratching his
neck.

“That was… a little unexpected, Bob…” he said.

“Yep. It was.”

There was an uncomfortable pause, as the two remaining colonels looked at the body of
one of their former comrades. They’d made their beds. They both just hoped that they’d
be more comfortable to lie in than those that had been made under Altman.

Martin broke the silence first.

“I’ll inform the men.”

Aiken nodded. He’d expected that tasks would be split that way.

“And I’ll inform the Lyrans.”

***

Resistance from the 43rd ended within minutes. The few remaining tanks pulled off to the
side of the road, and their crews dismounted, sitting on the outside of their vehicles,
watching as the Lyran armoured columns rolled past. Lyran casualties were light,
28 dead, twice that wounded. And, despite appearances, communist casualties were
surprisingly light as well. Highest losses were amongst the tank crews of 12th Armoured,
who had fought hard throughout the engagements, first against the Verenberg 28th, then, moving back to defend the Divisional HQ from the Lyrans…

There wasn’t much left of 12th Armoured.

LTGEN Elderman had asked COL Aiken as to his casualties, especially concerning whether
the Lyran medics could assist in any way. When he told Elderman of what 12th Armoured
had done that day, Elderman was flabbergasted.

COL Aiken was, with good reason, concerned for the treatment of his men. Rumours abounded of how Verenberg treated communists, and it wasn't all that long ago that Lyras itself had had several dozen of its own people executed for communist sympathies.

Elderman had allayed his fears, saying.

“You are no longer among enemies, here. You fought well, for your country and for ideals that you believe in, however misguided we may feel you are.As such, we will treat you with the honour we feel you have earned. You will spend the rest of this conflict as prisoners of war, and you will then return to your homes. This I swear to you as a soldier and guardian of the Protectorate.”

When 98th Armoured finally pulled out, the tanks dipped their guns in salute to warriors who had fought well, as they passed the remnants of the Lach-land unit.

It had taken the 98th Armoured four and a half hours to break the 43rd.

Another explosion rocked the harbour, with flaming debris falling back into the water.

Captain Murlain, Forward Observer from the Lyran 88th Artillery Brigade watched some of the burning hull land on another boat, a trawler, and set it aflame as well.

"Another luxury yacht down. I'd hate to be the one paying the insurance on all this... or having to pay because the insurance wont. I wonder if air attack is considered an act of God?"

Lieutenant Rogers, a platoon commander from the 76th Marine Mechanised Division, 14th Marine Assault Corps, laughed. The Lyran fleet had, wisely as it turned out, evacuated the harbour a while ago. The Kaiser's Haven civilian population was not so lucky, and the harbour would take weeks to repair after a raid on this scale. A disabled destroyer, pulled into the harbour after striking a mine during the landings, took a airbourne torpedo hit, and rocked, before starting to settle. It's anti-aircraft system were still firing though, streaks and whooshes from its VLS competing with the staccato of its CIWS and the roar of jet engines.

Nearly two hundred "Shepherd" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=534192) air defence systems, the air defence network for three complete corp-strength units, joined the aerial melee, SALY28 missiles flying off their racks and into the swarm of hostile aircraft. Active radar homing devices from upwards of a thousand surface-to-air missiles (180 Shepherds x 12 missiles fired each) lit up warning lights throughout the communist air units, and they launched into evasive manoeuvers.

But it was a target rich environment, and the SALY28 missiles would struggle to miss. Flares and chaff, when they worked, seemed to just change which aircraft was hit, while formations began to lose cohesion as planes jinked and dove to shake their pursuers.

Murlain had seen enough. The enemy fleet was out there. Passive sonar reports had given the area, and it matched with the aircraft approach vectors that the Shepherds had plotted on radar.

He raised his Cromwell handset, and punched in the grid references.

************************

Several kilometers away, in concealed positions and protected by organic AA assets, three regiments of LY300 Manticore artillery rocket systems (OOC: that's 108 individual Manticores, three regiments of 36) acknowledged the fire mission, received over Cromwell.

Each Manticore was equipped with two rocket pods, with each pod carrying seven LY4045 Anti-ship cruise missiles. Based on the venerable BGM-109 Tomahawk, the LY4045 ranged over 3000 km and carried a 450kg tandem-charged high-explosive anti-ship warhead.

The first salvo was fired less than 15 seconds after Captain Murlaine's order came through.

1512 missiles, painted in low-observability grey streaked unseen towards the Lach-land fleet, flying just above the waves to avoid radar.

The reload time for a Manticore was five minutes, with the next missile pods being loaded on by automated crane.

The second salvo fired, another 1512 missiles, along a slightly different approach vector.

The attack had been carefully planned. The long over-water journey to the communist fleet would take time. The first salvo was taking a longer route, intending to come in from the south-eat. The second would hit from the south, and both were timed to arrive at the same time.

Not just at the same time as each other, but also at the same time as the returning attack aircraft, so as to further confuse ship-board anti-missile defence systems.

The results would be interesting.

a single ship waits out side Kaisers Haven the docking bay opens and dozens of 'Water Walker' hovercraft exit and rush into the town gliding plainlessly over the oil slicks that prevent other landing craft from entering the harbour.
these move nonstop from water to land and quickly move to the workers district. they deploy both refugees and land-land soldiers amongst the rebels and supply more weapondry. these hovercraft are disigned to assualt beacheads and with a recoiless rifle and two machine guns mounted would provide great support in the streets strafing though intersections destroying vehicles and infantry and strafing out of danger before they could be fired on.

a massive submerine emerges near the ship -a squid, a carrier sub and launches 10 interceptors tightly packed into tubalar hangars out and from the side bays 4 float-fitted spirals drift out. the tiny Interceptors could easily be kept in garages and take off on roads, well the spiarls could be flown low over the oil and debris and dock in any clean parts of the harbour thanks to the floats. the squid was an innovation based on the imperial Japanese t-400 of WW2 and still highly experimental. this would be the first time the squid was used to deploy aircraft and sink back out of sight...

General McKenna, commander of 29th Artillery Corps, watched the Cromwell display in his command vehicle and smiled. Verenberg submarines shadowing the Lach-land fleet were providing real-time intelligence updates, and terminal stage reports from LY4045 cruise missiles assisted still further.

They knew exactly where the fleet was, and, even better, it was still supporting attempted landing operations.

“Sir?”

His aide, Lieutenant-Colonel Darane asked. He had every right to. The manticores were ready. There was no reason to delay. The Lach-land fleet was slower. Some ships were even stopping to pick up survivors or assist with repairs.

Not his concern. They were at war.

“I know, James. Fire.”

The command given, it was passed to divisional level, to the 404th, 504th and 505th Artillery Divisions that together made up 29 Corps. From there, it went down to each of the divisions' three brigades.

If the Lach-landers didn't like it when 88th Independent Artillery Brigade fired, they dislike 29 Corps' input considerably more.

88th was a brigade. 29 Corps was nine brigades...

On the firing lines, Manticores (http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb62/2821090/Manticore.jpg) trained their missile pods north-north-west, and within seconds of General McKenna giving the word, the first of the anti-ship cruise missiles rippled out of a nearby launcher.

In less than a minute, 13,608 (1512 per brigade, 9 brigades in a corps) cruise missiles were heading north to engage the communist fleet.

They were joined five minutes later by a second salvo.

McKenna didn't envy the ships one bit. Cromwell was reporting communists landing in Kaisers Haven. But the two Marine Mechanised Divisions, 76th and 77th, along with the Marine Armoured 78th, that together made 14th Marine Assault Corps, would hold.

If they needed help, 15th Armoured Corps was only five kilometres away.

The General took a deep breath, a little acrid with the tang of rocket engines.

It was a good day to be a Lyran.

****************************

Things weren't quite so rosy in Kaiser's Haven itself. Captain Murlaine, Lieutenant Rogers and the men of his marine mechanised platoon were now fighting. And, of all things, they were fighting hovercraft.

Nasty surprise that had been. As had the versatility of the communist airforces. They'd come loaded for anti-ship operations, hadn't found any ships, but it seemed that their weapons worked almost as well against ground targets, as the smoking wreck of a nearby Shepherd testified.

Assault hovercraft were proving devilishly hard to hit, but they did seem rather fragile, and the men were quickly working out, no doubt to the horror of the Lach-landers, that the recoil-less rifles they appeared to be armed with were useless against the LY3A1 Warhounds (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=527655&highlight=Lyras)that 78th Marine Armoured had roving through the city.

Captain Murlaine's helmet-mounted comm-system came online, and Colonel Santamaria's voice came over it.

"All 14 Corps personnel, be advised that hostile paratroopers have been spotted descending into the city. Stand by for further orders. Report status to individual higher, and stay sharp."

Murlaine locked eyes with Rogers. He'd got that transmission as well. Rogers spoke next.

"Think command will bring 15th forward, sir?"

Murlaine's eyes snapped right as a pair of Warhounds rounded a corner down the street, 155mm main guns traversing smoothly.

"Nah. Nothing they've landed can touch them. They'll need to land more. A hell of a lot more. And, if I remember the briefing, 29 Corps will have been making life really exciting for their fleet."

Murlaines gaze travelled back to his front, where the leading communist elements were digging in.

"We can take them."

***************Kaisers haven***************

Comrade Lohan is head of the operations in Kaisers Haven and with his father being a commander in the Lach-land Revolution half a century earlier he was taught the arts of guerella warfare by him. he was very skilled at training revolutionaries and he did as his dad trained him and also a execeptional commander due to his time in the Lach-land grand army. he had found that recoiless rifles worked great on lightly armoured vehicles but did little to hinder main battle tanks such as wolfhounds, a person with an RPG could do some serious damge with a bit of Luck but recoil on a hovercraft is not a nice thing to have. a method has been devoleped that took the good from both points firstly the hovercraft would strafe and pound the tank with recoiless rifle destroying the explosive-reactive armour while a revolutionary would get off and fire an anti-tank weapon at the venerable hull and could cling to the exterior of the hovercraft and be strafed to safety or if the hovercraft was under threat of fire run behind cover uncomprimising the hovercraft. it was a long shot but effective in some circumstances. even more effective were air raids conducted with percission and when timed perfectly in conjuction to a land-raid could demoralize a strikeforce into surrender or destroy them.

at the front line at present the communists were holding out in a number of houses in a backstreet. as the Lyran threat advanced a single spiral makes a swoop from the rear 'trenchsweeping' the street followed by three interceptors machine guns. A family of verenbergans in a house hold out with assualt rifles loaded with rock-salt rounds not exactly outdated weapondry either. a water walker sweeps around an alley and fires recoiless rifles and the two chain-guns into an advancing force from behind. tanks didn't have time to rotate to fire, infantry were quickly mowed by mounted guns and infantry held weapons, and hummer or jeep like vehicles were bait for recoiless rifles. within 15 seconds a tankcrew would find themselves virtually alone and not even seeing the action or the course of it.it was very demorilizing.

***************Fleet***************

the commander was watching a life sattelite feed of the area.
"wait we got something coordinates F7" the screeen shifts and zooms in and for a split second is blurry but after it refocuses it is clear what they are looking at, thousands of cruise missles heading to directly intercept the fleet.
"commencing evasive manueveres"
the fleet had been zigzagging ever sense the first missle strike but it was clear where they were going. they were border running. the fleet turned with the command and headed north-north east it was a small change of course from due north but over the distance would provide significant. some ships were now completely deadweights and were being dragged by utillery submarines a number of these with no operational value were abandoned for bait to the missles. they had only a few more miles to the border and from their they would be in international waters and any hostile action against them would be greatly frowned apon. their presense would also but the UN would get over it as they are technically too small to count as a large aggressive force. the spice channel had been taken off to provide the video coverage as lach-land was still recovering from anti-orbital strikes.
"the people will have to get over the lose of the spice channel"he had joked
"im still not over the lose of the spice channel" the steersman commented.

OOC:
Information.

Lyras fields two types of tank, the LY3A1/2 Warhound, and the newer LY4 Wolfhound.

78th Marine Armoured, the unit in Kaiser's Haven, uses the earlier LY3A1.

There IS explosive reactive armour (ERA) on the LY3 series, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Even with no ERA, you could fire recoil-less rifles and RPGs at even an Abrams, and nothing is likely to happen, due to the anti-rpg cage armour, and the Chobham that forms the armour itself (it's all in the write-up I linked to). Entire Iraqi tank divisions surrendered because they couldn't kill American M1A1/2 Abrams. So the chances of recoil-less rifles and RPGs doing much damage, even to an Abrams, is extremely limited. Further, a Warhound is 10 tons heavier than an Abrams, and notably better protected.

The later LY4 Wolfhound, used by 15th Corps just outside Kaiser's Haven, has active defence on top of all that, where incoming missiles, RPGs, etc, are fired upon by automated systems of the tank itself. Based on the Israeli "Iron Fist" and "Trophy" systems, the Lyran "Watchkeeper" is very effective. An RPG fired at an LY4 would be lucky to hit, let alone penetrate.

I do, however, freely admit that recoil-less rifles and RPGs WILL scratch the paintwork, on both types.

Please, also give a little credit to Lyran soldiery. They've been training since before they could change their own nappies.

Reference cruise missiles, you've just been fired upon by an entire corps of artillery, and nothin happens? That's a little off-putting, I must admit. I made it clear in the post that the Verenberg submarines are providing targetting data (you've admitted that they are in contact, by using torpedo nets and ascribing kills to them). The cruise missiles, like current versions of the Tomahawk (on which they are based), can (and would be) given constant updates on location of targets. Unless my internet is playing up, it seems that you just ignored 27,216 cruise missiles. A simple course change will not shake their radar guidance, even if you did manage to shake the Verenberg submarines.

I request that you edit your post, Lach-land, and then I will do the same with this slot.

2nd, 5th and 16th Luftflotte Div. awaited their orders....they where ordered to scramble and intercept the enemy, and pull out before the city when the AA will open up

as well as the 2nd and 3rd Anti-Aircraft Korp (it is a K cuz they are German) as well as the armored Vehicles armed with the Shepard Anti-Aircraft System
where Mobilized around the Capital.......the Enemy Planes where walking into the Lions Den

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::Kaisers Haven:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

with the 28st Armored Division moving into the city, with the LY4

another unusual weapon was used against the hover crafts.....with the help of brilliant soldiery, the Flame-Thrower

Small patrols would move Building to Building, stalking enemy Craft, A soldier with a flame thrower would set fire to the Rubber Skirting that protects the hull, disabling it, while simultaneously another soldier would come from behind with an Anti Tank Weapon and Disable the Rear Rotors while another takes out the Recoilless gun, having now being completely disabled the troops would set explosives on the hulls and fall back....

another Method was to use Anti-Tank Land mines, they things may float but they still put emense pressure on the ground causing them to go off

yet another thing used by the Verenberg soldier was to barricade streets and set fire to the barricades often funneling the unexpected craft into traps

*******************IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE*******************
Last week in Verenberg the changing of the seasons occured but the Temprature has only just begun to plummet, in 2 days time the Temperature is expected to be at -40*Celsius......all Lyran and Verenberg Troops are to Report to the closest Armory to collect extreme cold weather cloths

((OOC i didn't actually post the engagement with the missles yet and the dropping of them disabled ships is designed to mess with the radar guidance for even a splitt second. the hovercraft are extremely agile capable especially with the ability to strafe. the whole thing of guerella warfare is to take on larger enemies and disapear again causing small causalties. about the ERA ok its just that most people use it at the expense of heavier armour to make it light i presumed that what you were doing. oh and for the record the hovercraft do have armoured skirts and an armoured hull leaving very little rubber in the line for your flame throwers. you have to admit that the air supremacy it would appaer that we have would cause considerable looses for your tanks aswell. ill edit it in a second))

***************konigsberg***************

artillery started firing from rebel bases at the capitol as the planes neared
"we got incoming hostiles, intercepters break off and engage" several Interceptor squadrons broke off and headed to counter intercept the luftfloote...

***************Fleet***************

Cruise missles are fired in a continous stream to intercept the incomings and patrols of planes and ships contantly went out and destroyed missles.
as the remaining missles neared the fleet did a 180 degree turn and headed full speed south...

***************Kaisers Haven***************

the peoples vehicles have been modified into war machines.
utes are fitted with TOW missles and anything with a sun roof could have a machinegun mounted.

another squid slowly emerges outside the harbour. this is a heli-model with a closed roof instead of a runway and an air-lock for choppers to take off out of.
A sky-crane lifts of with a giant crate underneath followed by another and three attack helicopters. the skycranes noticably struggling under the weight. the choppers landed in a rebel base and the sky-cranes drop the crates and return to the squid too pick up more cartes. the attck helicopters begin prowling the area with support from interceptors. the crates are opened and the load examined. the Oblivion class main battle tank had arrived armed with a 120mm gun with liquid proppelent or a solid proppelent 140mm gun it didn't pack as much firepower as a wolfhound but was manuevable and the sloped depleted uranium armour provides considerable protection for the crew and complied with the 'Medusas hair' to protect the verenrable back of the turret and ERA on some models had execptional protection.
also the 'Mulcher' class tank armed with the GAU-9 machine gun it was brilliant rapid-fire anti-vehicular fire with the same protection as the Oblivion.
aswell as tanks 220mm light artillery peices were provided to combat the wolfhounds. the sky-cranes bought two more crates full then re-entered the squid and sunk back down...

((OOC: their you go a 180 turn is not a small change of course it is very difficult ot do and you must admit it would make missles overshoot if they are close enough.))

a submarine breaks the ice near Kaisers Haven. it is just a transport sub designed to carry equipment after waiting for the ice to refreeze. large bays open and greyhounds small snowmobile like vehicles with treads a covered top and a machine gun slide out onto the ice. aswell as a force of ski-troops trained to fight in extreme weather conditions and carry skis for mobility these slide over the ice without cracking it and enter the town.

OOC: Air supremacy? There are several hundred Shepherd AA systems still roving around. You may have planes up there, but it is a very dangerous place to be...

I'm assuming a VLS-type Aegis system, or similar, and have determined ship mumbers based upon what you have provided me in your fleet diagram.

For reference, turning 180 degrees in a warship is not like turning 180 degrees on a jetski, lol. It is a turn with an arc of several hundred metres at the very least. It wont throw a guided missile off, although it might throw off an unguided rocket or plain old iron bomb.

Incidentally, people don't, usually, side with those that just bombed them... just a thought.

220mm light artillery? That's, um... a contradiction. 105mm would be light... not 220...

Helicopters carrying tanks? Wow. Where can I buy them, lol?

Oh, and... there aren't any rebel bases close enough to Konigsberg to fire at it. Check map, if you like.

IC:

Progress was slower than expected. The famed Kaiser's Haven freeze hadn't appeared to do much more than slow the steady stream of communist reinforcements coming in from the sea. While the stream was certain to slow up once the anti-ship missiles started impacting, which they obviously hadn't yet.

Still, the harbour appeared to be the key point of the engagement.

Nothing that a trio of LY3 batteries firing indirect couldn't solve. It was for those indirect-fire purposes that Captain Murlaine was attached to LT Rogers' platoon.

"Shelldrake 76, this is Foxtrot Oscar 4. Fire-mission, over."

If the communists felt like unloading into the middle of an artillery bombardment, they were welcome to try it...

***

Field Marshal Ward watched the displays. They were advancing, but slowly. Too slowly. The cost was escalating, and faster than they had projected.

Frustrating. But not of any military import.

He spoke without catching anyone's attention, confidant that his voice would cut through the din of the command centre without undue difficulty.

"My regards to General Agamar. Get 15th Armoured Corps moving into Kaiser's Haven. Turn their flanks from the west."

The din of the command centre changed as people began to follow his directions. He spoke again.

"Prepare radio broadcasts, all stations. Relay my words, exactly as I say them."

There was a pause, as his communications officer called up a word processor program.

"Ready, sir."

"Citizens of Kaiser's Haven. This is the Lyran Protectorate Army. We are your allies, and allies of the Kaiser. We fight to defend you, and your children. Remain in your homes. Rebel and invading forces are taking the fighting into your cities. Stay in your homes. Any who venture out are at grave risk. We cannot emphasise enough. Remain in your homes."

There was a pause again, as the communications officer finished typing. Field Marshal Ward could feel the uncertainty about the message.

"The concept is simple, colonel. Everyone will hear the message. Those who choose not to stay indoors now have obviously chosen to defy the Kaiser, and must thusly be rebels. We will do our utmost to defend the Kaiser's loyal subjects, but if they take up arms against us, then we will retaliate."

The mood changed. There was purpose, and direction.

And, more importantly, there was artillery, and 15th Armoured Corps.

The invaders had yet to field anything that had managed to destroy the LY3 Warhounds of 78th Marine Armoured Division.

Let them attempt to fight a full, fresh corps of yet stronger tanks.

***

Distances to the Lach-land fleet closed. Fighters and air-defence missiles would take their toll, but there were 27,000 cruise missiles.

During the Falklands War, just two 'Exocet' anti-ship missiles had sunk a destroyer. The toll on transport and cargo ships was substantially higher, with only one missile required to do the job, per ship.

Now though, now there were more anti-ship missiles in the air at the same time than had been fired in both Gulf Wars, countless skirmishes and minor wars, the Iran-Iraq War, all the Arab-Israeli Wars and the US conflicts with Libya combined.

Further, they hadnt been fired blind. The Verenberg submarines stalking the communist fleet were still providing targetting information.

Active radars lit up. Targetting computers within the seeker heads of countless missiles locked on to two dozen ships. Networking ensured that the missiles didn't all target the same vessels. That left over 1000 missiles per ship. A far cry from one or two and, in fact, more missiles flying towards the ships than the ships had missiles to fire back with.

The missiles were now less than 80km out.

2 soldiers sat huddled in a fox hole in the freezing temperatures, with blankets wrapped around both and frost over there helmets....

"how do you think the commies are faring" said one

"im not sure, at least we have supplies and food and ammunition" said the other

"whereas they only have a limited supply especially with there fleet gallivanting around the Verenberg Straits how are they being re-supplied, our subs would knock any convoys out of the water" the first said

"doesn't take long for food and Fuel to be used in this weather, or Ammunition for rebels with itchy trigger figures" the second said
