"If blood is the price of victory, then my enemies shall pay in full" - motto of the CDF
The Civil Defence Forces of the Protectorate of Kaeros are the primary element of the Kaerosian military. Comprised of 50,000 volunteers it is the first and main line of defence for the country.
The CDF, while essentially the regular army of Kaeros, does not serve full time like most nations' militaries. It is instead a part time force, with each soldier serving full time for the duration of their initial training, then training one night a week, and one weekend a month. In addition to this, there are extra training exercises, a two week annual exercise, and extra training courses and special events throughout the year.
In order to maintain at least some standing force for national defence however, the CDF is split into thirty six brigades brigades, with three brigades serving as the active ready force for a period of one month. Each brigade is named for the month during which it serves. The system was originally based on twelve brigades, but was later expanded to provide better coverage for the country. The new system names the brigades on the month they serve and the numeric order in which each unit was raised. Thus, during the august, the First August Brigade, the Second August Brigade, and the Third August brigade will be on active duty.
Each brigade is basically identical, with the same organization and equipment. Each brigade consists of 4,000 personnel, for a total of 48,000. The other 2,000 CDF personnel are permament staff who handle the necessary administrative and logistical duties needed to run the military. Each brigade consists of one light infantry regiment, one mechanized infantry battalion, one armour company, one artillery battallion, one MASH unit, and the needed logistical support structure.
The CDF stands out in the world due to its high ratio of combat personnel to support personnel. This is accomplished by using the combat personnel to perform much of the needed maintenance, administrative, and logistical duties needed. All personnel assist in maintaining military facilities, and as shooting is a common and government subsidized sport, the soldiers themselves often serve as armourers and are required to be proficient in the repair and maintenance of all vehicles, weapon systems, and other kit. The fact that it is a largely part time army means that its systems see much less wear and tear, which helps to largely reduce the amount of maintenance and support needed.
On the other hand, while the CDF is able to operate with so few support personnel, it is severely restricted in its operational capabilities. It is a purely defensive force, the training and weapons of the CDF reflect this, and offensive operations are made near impossible by the lack of a support structure. The lack of virtually any aircraft and naval assets also helps significantly reduce the amount of support needed to maintain operational capability.
Brigade Organization
Each of the twelve brigades of the CDF uses the same organization and equipment, which is set up in the following manner:
Infantry Regiment

CDF infantry on training exercise in southern wastes region, troops are from 2nd July Brigade
Each infantry regiment is commanded by a colonel, and consists of three battalions, each commanded by a major, of three companies, each commanded by a captain, of three platoons plus a support platoon, commanded by lieutenants, with each platoon consisting of three sections plus the commanding officer. Each section is commanded by either a sergeant or master corporal. Each regiment is comprised of about 1,132 personnel.
Each regiment has enough gun trucks for one full battalion, as well as a unit of six Tank Destroyers to provide heavy, mobile anti-tank support.
Section: The section is the primary fighting block of the Light Infantry. It consists of nine personnel split into three three-man fireteams. Each section has a pair of light machine guns, one in Alpha team, and one in Bravo team, a pair of 40mm grenade launchers, again, one in Alpha and one in Bravo, a designated marksman rifle, which is operated by the 2IC who is in charge of Charlie team. There will also be either a general purpose machine gun, a 60mm mortar, or a 84mm recoilless rifle that will be operated by the other two members of Charlie team with the 2IC directing their fire. Other weapons include trip flares, various grenades, standard rifles, sidearms, mines, possible shotguns, and disposable light anti-tank weapons. Sections, when operating independently, will generally utilize Charlie team to find good cover and establish a base of fire while Alpha and Bravo will act as the maneuver element, one bounds forward while the other lays down fire as they attempt to flank and eliminate enemy positions. It consists of 9 personnel.
Platoon: Consisting of three sections plus the commanding officer, who will typically stay back from the fight and provide co-ordination while allowing the section commander to attend to specific details and to win the fight. Each platoon has as its heavy weaponry a pair of GPMGs, and either an 84mm recoilless rifle or a 60mm mortar. There are 28 soldiers in a platoon.
Company: A step up from the platoon, the company is the standard larger scale operating block, comprising three standard platoons which serve as the fire and maneuver units and support platoon which provides Recce and heavy weapons support. The support platoon has a 10 man machine gun section operating either GPMGs or heavy machine guns. A six man mortar team using a pair of 81mm mortars as indirect fire support, a 4 man recce detachment for scouting and specialized missions, a pair of 2 man sniper teams, and a 4 man specialized anti-tank detachment using the heavier man portable guided missile systems. There are 112 troops in a company.
Battalion: The battalion is the standard strategic operating block, responsible for individual areas of operation the integral command group will coordinate company level operations while the battalion aid station provides medical support. These consist of 356 personnel.
Mechanized Infantry Battalion

While the Light Infantry Regiment of each battalion is the primary combat force, the mechanized battalion's objective is to provide a rapid response unit to plug holes in the main line of battle, close any breaches in the line and deal with enemy elements that may have broken through. An additional role is counterattack, often using the armour company as the spearhead, the mechanized battalion will punch through the enemy's front line and wreak havoc in the rear.
The battalion is organized in a similar manner to the infantry regiment, with the battalion consisting of three companies of three platoons of three sections each. Personnel numbers and even section composition are different due to the presence of vehicles.
Section: Once again, the primary fighting block is the individual section. It consists of 11 personnel, the three man vehicle crew, as each section has its own designated vehicle with the crew being considered part of that section, and the actual eight troop dismounted section. The dismounted element is split into four two-man fire teams, and operates in that manner.
Platoon: Each Platoon consists of three sections, for a total of 33 personnel.
Company: Each company consists of three platoons, plus a commander's platoon which is comprised of a command vehicle, a mortar carrier, a recovery vehicle, and a recce vehicle. Each company has 127 personnel.
Battalion: The overall battalion consists of three companies, plus a command platoon. The command platoon consists of the battalion commander's vehicle, a pair of cavalry vehicles for protection, and a pair of EW vehicles. The battalion has a total of 403 personnel.
Armoured Company
The armoured company of each brigade is meant primarily to act as a spearhead and in support of the mechanized infantry. If enemy armour is present, it may be detached from the mechanized battalion to fight as a stand-alone unit until the enemy armour has been dealt with.
The company consists of 12 Main Battle Tanks, a pair of armoured recovery vehicles, and a pair of Engineering Vehicles for clearing or setting up obstacles, fortifications, and mines.
Artillery Battalion
The artillery battalion of each brigade is meant to provide heavy indirect fire support and provide the military's only anti-air capabilities. The battalion is a mix of rocket systems, towed guns, and self propelled guns, and AA systems. There are four towed gun batteries, each battery consisting of four trucks and four guns, a four man crew is assigned to each gun with an additional four man detachment operating a pair of GPMGs for local defence. There are two batteries of four self propelled 155mm howitzers. There are two rocket batteries that consist of four MLRS systems per battery. The final element of the battalion are the two AA batteries. Each AA battery consists of a pair of AA guns, a SAM system, and a RADAR system. There are a total of 176 personnel in the artillery battalion.
