Description: One of Verostad most advanced radar suite ever mounted on a fighter plane the APG-77 is shared between many platforms, most notably the F-22A.On the F-23A it has been tailored into the V1 version optimized for air combat. It incorporates all of the usual fighter radar modes in air-to-air engagements but adds some nice trick that other more conventionnal radars cannot achieve. The main reason for that is that it uses an active radar antenna which is composed of thousands of small antenna module which are in effect micro radars. Each receive/transmit module, as they are known, can be steered into its own target or several can cooperate performing one task while another area of the array can perform another task. This permits a wide range of new modes not commonly available on fighter radars.Such as LPI(Low Porbability of Intercept) operation which basically means that while the radar is searching for targets its emissions cannot be detected by enemy ESM devices or RWR.It also enables a very accurate NCTR picture which is powerful enough to actually function as an imaging device. Also it has a built in IFF capabilities which prevent the carrying of a dedicated IFF interrogator. Finally because of its nature the APG-77 is near impossible to jam as all it's receive/transmit module are frequency agile and that, due to the pecularities of radar jamming, only a single part of the array will be jammed at 100 percent.Since the radar doesnt necessarily use all of its array for detection and tracking, other parts of it can perform the task of the modules that are being jammed. Moreover, this particular type of array doesn't emit sidelobes meaning that jamming techniques which use this characteristics of Doppler radar jamming cannot function.
The power of the radar calculators also enables it to function as a radar jamming device, able to perform many jamming techniques and shift frequencies many times per second.Built in the computers is library of all known radars available as well as a threat library. The latter will function as a radar warning receiver but much more useful as a radar sensor able to direct anti-radiation missile at other targets such as an AEW&C aircraft or even fighter planes. For this function to be of any use though special missiles have to be carried which will be able to home on the emitting aircraft.
