Lorkhan is ruled by King Cherek Stormheld, representative of Clan Stormheld.
There are five great clans in Lorkhan, and these clans are called the Five Pillars or the Five Houses.
The great clans are:

Clan Stormheld
Clan Phalanx
Clan Icemoore
Clan Wodrak
Clan Barok

These five clans are constantly competing with one another while juggling with the contradicting goal of maintaining unity and their power base to defend Lorkhan from invasion or their power base from lesser clans.

The Stormheld clan has been in power for two hundred years, but many within Lorkhan see a change in the near future. Cherek's only son and rightful heir Ulrich has proved incompatent by failing his trial of passage. Clan Icemoore and Wodrak are competing to replace Clan Stormheld.

Clan Phalanx remains isolated from most political endeavors. As the rightful honor guard and traditional army of Lorkhan, they are loyal merely to the gods and the crown and have no ambitions to rule or favoritism for who does rule. They are sworn to piety, honor, and valor. They consider the three to be more important than life itself.

Clan Icemoore have a stranglehold on the slave trade in southern Lorkhan. Because of their dominance of this enteprise, they have amassed a fortune that has bought them the favor of many of the nobles. Their wealth is second only to...

Clan Wodrak are the master merchents and tradesmen of Lorkhan. Many, if not most of Lorkhan's bazaars are owned by Clan Wodrak's nobles. If something is bought or sold in Lorkhan there is a safe bet that Wodrak is getting more than a fair share of the profit.

Clan Borak is a dying house that many believe will fall apart in the coming decade. They have long been strong allies with Clan Stormheld, and it is this alliegance that has carried them for many years. With the expected end of Clan Stormheld however; many anticipate Clan Borak to be helpless to the changes they will encounter. Lesser clans and enemies within the Five Pillars have plotted and carried out the assassination of many vital members in the clan, leaving leadership at a staggering low.
