After the huge success of NationStates: The Game for PC shocked the industry, and even Sundance Gaming itself, Sundance Gaming Company has officially released the board game version. While this cannot be hooked up to the internet, it will allow upto six players to battle for hours - even days, weeks, or months should the players choose so - in person, and even without electricity, you can play!

Hamilay
10-07-2007, 16:44
Hamilay Technology Weekly

The highly anticipated NationStates, from ViZionarian corporation Sundance Gaming, hit store shelves yesterday in Hamilay to an enthusiastic reception. Over a million copies were purchased in the first two hours, and gamers throughout the country wasted no time in founding their new nations, with, to this reviewer's belief, imaginative and amusing concepts. Already a realistic and dynamic system of foreign relations between players has developed, with one 'United States of America' founding the first and so far largest power bloc, presumably based on the United States of Allanea.

However, NationStates has already attracted a significant amount of controversy, with industry watchdog groups claiming it encourages racial hatred and dangerous nationalistic sentiments. In particular, the dynamics of the virtual citizenry have been criticised, such when the simulated population sees a spike in discrimination after terrorist attacks. Critics have claimed that this mechanic "sets an offensive tone, both towards racial minorities and the intelligence of the population as a whole." Other events, such as aforementioned 'United States of America' 's invasion of one 'Iraq', resulting in civilian deaths and civil conflict, were also blasted due to concerns that they glossed over the reality of war in the real world, such as recent events in Hamilay and the current Cazelia-British Londinium war crimes dispute.

Despite this, the game's popularity shows no signs of dropping, and its proponents have responded to its criticisms by supposing that Sundance is attempting to simply make a game as true to life as possible. Others still have claimed that the game is clearly a work of fiction. "Some of the nations you see here are ridiculous," said one. "I mean, a triangular flag? What's up with that? And even the largest superpowers can't even afford a single superdreadnought. The game is unmistakably fiction, or at least set a long time in the past."

The NationStates community outside the game has also got off to an impressive start, with the General section of the official forums showing immense popularity, including, strangely, with this reviewer, despite the fact that it consists mostly of abortion debates on a good day.

Make your own nation?

By: Roger Boscoe

The new NationSim game from the ViZionarian corporation Sundance Gaming, NationStates, took The Sunrise Islands by storm. The game has become instantly popular amongst all different age groups ranging from teens to adults.

The Game lets a player make their own "nation" with which they can trade and go to war, interact with other players and customize to their liking. Nations range from serious nations like one called, "The United States of America, obviously based on real life nations like Allanea, Philimbesi, and Cookesland; to less serious countries such as "The Enormous Wad of BubbleGum" featuring an stick of gum as it's flag.

Players can run it according to their own warped political ideals, create a Utopian paradise for society's less fortunate or a totalitarian corporate police state, care for their people or deliberately oppress them, join the United Nations or remain a rogue state, it's really up to them. I haven't been able to escape the new craze by making my own nation called "The Republic of Italy" which i based off the real nations of Cookborough, Pacitalia, Nuevo Italia, and Nueve Italia. I strongly reccomend this game for anyone who has a desire to be in charge or just have fun.

Ye bunch of scoundrels! We know that you developed your "game" from the ancient Auralinian card game of "Strip Nation States" wherein players who lose a round must instruct 10% of their population to divest themselves of their clothing. When the naked population of any given nation reaches 50%, the country is given the designation of "A Half-Assed Bunch of Pansies."

We demand satisfaction, or we will start production of our most terrifying Fart Bombs and drop them on your conniving asses.

Pacitalia
11-07-2007, 18:27
From GameUniverse magazine, July 2007
The fate of the world is in our hands... and we love it

Sundance Gaming's newest title release has surely turned heads among the roleplay-gaming sector both here in Pacitalia and around the world. NationStates: The Game (Ð 26,90 at most retailers), based on the wildly popular internet version built to promote an author's website in 2002, is, as Sunrise Gamer's Monthly's Roger Boscoe puts it, "instantly popular amongst all different age groups, ranging from teens to adults".

In NationStates: The Game, the player creates his or her own nation, which then allows them to set the course of domestic policy and produce foreign and economic policies that will either turn that country into a prolific superpower or end in potential disaster. Power-cravers and power-splitters, dictators and democrats alike will find this game exciting from top to bottom, as the completely customisable workspace allows players to choose whether or not their nations will be an inoffensive democracy, an iron fist dictatorship, a hungry capitalist machine, an anarchy, or a leftist elite-education state. Meanwhile, any history buffs will love the Time Scale feature in NS:TG, which allows players to create nations as far back or forward in time as 100,000 years.

If you're not big on diplomacy or international cooperation, you can opt to remain out of the United Nations or of other alliances that may pop up in your telegrams box. In the Nation mode you can control government spending with easy-to-use sliders and box inputs that show you the expected trend of your actions. Your government's popularity and your country's resiliency are also determined by "Issues" which appear in a separate dialogue and ask you to take a side with one of the three or more lobbyists appealing to you on a certain issue (national park destruction, banning the sale of a certain book, allowing nudity). Can't decide? You can drop the issue all together by clicking the handy Dismiss feature. You may be doing that a lot since the small repertoire of issues means their repetition is imminent.

The interesting Region feature comes into play if the user has an internet connection and hooks into multiplayer mode. The player can move his nation into a region and interact more seamlessly with other nations in that region, forming a common defence policy, economic ties, cultural or student exchange agreements, and comparing countries' stats against each other to see who's tops and who's the regional bottom-feeder.

All in all this game is never boring since it gives you nearly complete freedom to run your country how you want, any time you want, and allows you to feel like a legitimate leader of a real-world country. It's an intellectually stimulating game with an interesting concept and it does the original Internet version justice beyond expectations. The only cons are the repetition of the government issues, some problems with the game crashing on PCs (if you have a Bluefox computer, you will likely find that problem thankfully does not exist). Otherwise, when it is working -- which is most of the time -- it is a glorious take on roleplaying and a productive way to sit at the computer for hours, since it makes you think.

The Toopoxican Censorship Agency has not passed this computer game for retail use, there are concerns raised over the current nations of "Russia" and "Egypt" (Both Parodies of Toopoxica and Volitaia respectivly) and in the corporation known as "Microsoft" (Beleived to be a harsh parody of the Toopoxican Organisation) As such Toopoxia will not distribute this game and we urge other nations to follow suite, this game will only result in degredation and anarchy.

Conversely, the long standing Toopoxican gaming corporation known as "Tin Soldier" Have released a rebuttal entitled "Toopoxia: Total War" This game focuses on Toopoxia's taking over of the world gaining bonus points for each former GASN nation destroyed.

New Game Causes World-Wide Controversy

This In-Game Screenshot shows a Player's army overseeing the reconstruction of a bridge

Are these games moral?

Recently, Sundance Gaming Company released a new real-time strategy game, tactfully named "NationStates: The Game".

The objective of this game is to create a nation, set a timeline for it (ranging from the ancient times to the deep future) and get your nation online, where you can compete, have wars, and manage your economy. Always faced by threats from the real world, such as plagues, wars and revolutions

It recieved very good reviews as well as outstanding scores by most gaming magazines and blogs (due to it's incredible realisticness), as well a gigantic wave of aproval from gamers all over the world.

In fact, the developers have already been asked to make an expansion pack, and the native Soviet Games has contacted the developers for a joint project known as "NS: Total War".

However, it's not all rainbows and flowers, as several countries, Toopoxia, for instance, have banned the game for a number of reasons (it could topple the goverment, being one of them), showing their intentions to mantain their oppresive ways and their population misinformed.

Already, a Toopoxian developer has cloned the game, taking the time to make a few adjustments to make Toopoxia "leader of the world" and awarding points for destroying ex-GASN nations, such as The World Soviet Party itself.

The Soviet citizenship can rest assured that their goverment wont ban the game, as well as actually encouraging people to try it and causing mass sales in the games market (the game can be adquired for a mere 25 Soviet Coins).

The Goverment has also expressed it's intention to try and develop a more military-oriented version for training purposes.

NationStates hits Number One

In a shocking development, the game from ViZon called NationStates has reached number one in sales, pushing out White Faction II from it's number one spot it has held for three weeks.

Reviews have been mostly positive amongst gaming magazines and websites. However, many people have reported having existential meltdowns while playing, and a cult has developed stating that the game NationStates is in fact a representation of real life, in that there are gods outside our reality actually playing the same game they are and manipulating them, but they're all loonies, and have been shipped off to rehabilitation camps for their own good.

It is rumoured that Veliky Kynaz Tarakh Andropov, the younger brother to Tsar Xavier II, has taken up playing the game in his spare time, though the Kremlin has remained silent on the issue.

GameFreak Review Column: NationStates

Review by Matthew Cochran

When video game megastore Game Emporium first brought NationStates out, I have to admit, I was skeptical. I never thought that, compared to HALO, Battlefield Earth and other kill-fests that are so popular today, a game about politics stood a chance. I can honestly say I've never been more wrong. I started out creating a nation called The Republic of Germany, based off of the nations in The New Prussian Empire. From there, I managed my budget, decided on issues, and got a feel for international politics. I also got to customize my nation, choosing the currency, national animal, and motto, and even designing my own flag. After about 15mins, it actually felt like I was running a country. But the best was yet to come. When I logged in to the online server, I discovered a whole world of alliances, wars, trade, and international action on a scale I never imagined. This game is definitely addictive, and I think I'm going to enjoy playing this for a long time. Total Score: 9.75/10

Popular Game Brings Mixed Reviews by Gov't. Officials

Alex Montague (AP)
Hudson--The immensely popular political simulation NationStates is drawing fire from some Republican congressmen and women, who say that the game holds fronts for the overthrow of the government. While most players have been relatively benign, a growing region calling itself Death to Prestonia has caused some concern. The region, headed by a nation calling itself Deathtothepresident, has been making threats, both verbally and symbolically, against the President and Congress. The regional founder's flag depicts Pres. Preston with crosshairs on his head, and other flags show various government buildings being destroyed. The President was quoted today as saying that he doesn't believe the threats are real enough to warrant pulling the game but that the region will be investigated and, if evidence of criminal action is discovered, the region will be shut down and it's founder may face charges.

Further Developments in the Nationstates Story

There have been dramatic devolpments involving the computer game released by the Sundance Gaming Company, investigation of possible members have led police to a senior member of the Vice-Consul's Cabinet, Gary Teuffen, 42, has been charged with Conspiracy to Incite Revolution and Disregard of Censorship Laws, he has been fined $5,000 and will be sent to prison for 5 months, apparently the Middle Aged man brought the game illegally from the black market and set about creating a parody of the Toopoxican Organisation known as Microsoft.

Lucian Brave, CEO of the Toopoxican Organisation, has stated publically that he doesn't find the game or its parodies offensive and even stating jokingly "The only problem I have [with the game] is that Microsoft was unable to destroy the Apple Corp as would have happened in real life." This move has dissapointed several eager gamers who have been petitioning for the games release, a statement released online by the Toopoxican Censorship Board states that "We will not be releasing this game under any title or circumstance, please cease sending letters to our Headquarters as they will be immediatly shredded."

The Islamic Board of Culture for Toopoxia has jumped into the argument claiming that "The Game needs to be released, the Toopoxicans barely have anywhere to execute their creative spirit and this game provides just that outlet." Many are rallying behind the ICB including noted Free Rights speaker Garrelf Bezker, it is unclear whether the demands of such highly respected figures will be taken note of or not.

A review from www.GamesRUs.co.ni

Everyone has heard of NationStates: The Game, and countless millions have already played it, I among them, and I must tell everyone who reads this: Buy the Game. Right now. Seriously, get away from your computers and get the disk as soon as possible.

Why am I so hyped up on a political simulation? Because who knew global politics could be so much fun?! I started out on the single-player campaign, in which you create your own country as you would like, start out with a set population, and lead your people to greatness. After I had gotten used to the controls (which are extremely fluid and player-friendly with plenty of hotkeys), I decided to try my hand out on the Internet universe.

Being the patriotic person I am, I affectionately named my country Isola D'Argento (not so much to my surprise, Isola D'Argenta was already taken!), and got right into the game rather quickly.

I can say this is the the King of All-Nighters: you cannot stop playing. There's always some attempt to overthrow your government, some foreign power flexing their muscles at you, some economic crisis threatening the very foundation of your nation, and so on. The developers did an excellent job of designing the game so that anyone can be attracted to it and play it with is, but it takes quite a good deal of time to master it.

As for the difficulty, it can be adjusted to suit your own level, ranging from where your opponents simply sit there and drool up to the point where the AI feels like an actual person: they know all of your strategies, counter-strategies, when to use biased propaganda, when to take advantage of crises in your nation, and so on. When you play online, it's an entirely different story. Nothing can compare to the human mind in terms of strategy and politcal maneuvering. Some tendencies can be explained (so say, they like to waste their entire budget on their military building massive ships known as Super Dreadnoughts), but the people you'll play with or against are as varied as the game itself.

Another great feature is the Campaign Editor, in which players can create their own scenarios and post them online for others to play in. These scenarios are not always directly related to your own nation, however, and can be quite entertaining, allowing you to play in different time periods, under certain conditions, and so on.

Something that I thought was pretty interesting was the ability to switch between commanding an entire nation to controlling only one or a few characters. The game changes pace a little bit when this happens, but just the ability to do so remains one of the games most popular features.

Also, look out for mods a plenty: there are countless things to change on this game, and even more to add on to. Hell, you can even design your own flag and place it in the game!

With an unbelievable amount of freedom to do what you want, it seems that no one can resist the call of NationStates. I know I can't, and trust me, there are even more people who will get hooked by the time this game even begins to wind down 50 years from now.

Ratings:

Graphics: 10
As customizable as anything else in the game. Design your own cities, people, military, vehicles, weapons, and so on. Everything is up to your own imagination, making this game run on one of the best engines we've ever seen.

Sound: 10
Once again, this too is customizable. While you can stick with the in-game soundtrack, which is rather nice, you can also import music and sounds as well, even into the online version where you can share them with other players.

Replay: 10
No two nations are ever the same, and even if you create a new one just like your old, the scenarios it will go through will be entirely different every time. This presents replay ability that remains unparalleled.

Gameplay: 10
The opponents are smart (even online ... most of the time), the controls are easy to understand and use, the strategies and paths to your own version of power are varied, and the game is, overall, fun.

I recommend this to any gamer, no matter who they are. It has a little something for everyone, and trust me, it will not dissapoint.

From the Board of Education (my sister), 24 days previously
I have been trialling this game for a while. While it may undo the ideas we have hammered into our people about our form of government being the only one that works, we haven't banned this "Internet", and thus our citizens are bound to find out about this. I recommend we let it in.

From the Board of We-Own-Everything (Commerce) (my daughter-in-law), 53.6 seconds ago
Since you have asked me to monitor sales of this "NationStates", we have been recording data about who buys it. Interestingly enough, almost no one does. Those who buy games usually want the latest in the "HOT XXX GALORE" series or "StationNates", which I presume was your clever idea?
As per usual, my cousin in Law Enforcement has been terminating those 8 who have gotten revolutionary ideas.

Stoklomolvi has recently experienced a surge of interest in the government after the new game, NationStates, was released in stores nationwide. The populace, apparently after experiencing what the Stoklomolvi government must undergo everyday, has become much more sympathetic to the government after playing this game. However, after the recent note about being able to create a college state, several college students have actually quit college and tried to start their own country right outside of Vladistov, which is the capital of Stoklomolvi. It is near the eastern edge of the Yalu River. This is quite distressing, but the NationStates sales continue to soar past $15 billion. The college students have since been arrested.
