6. Recent History
The country overthrew its monarchical government in its 1949-1954 civil war and formally established itself as a republic in 1955. Rebuilding was completed rapidly under the socialist leadership of the country's first administration in 1956-1964, with nationalization campaigns gradually expanding the government's control to around 70% of GDP. However, the stagnation of other centrally planned economies led the government to shift course preemptively in the Rodachenko administration of 1964-1972, with many state-owned enterprises privatized and government reduced in scope. The 1970's saw a continued shift from a socialist to a social market model, with the country's transparent tax system, efficient services and ease of foreign investment offsetting the high taxes required to pay for the measures.
During most of its history, the country was quiet on the international stage due to its precarious position along many invasion routes. However, its booming economy, openness to foreign investment and world-class commitments to education and scientific research have made it a major player in the world's research and financial communities. An ambitious plan to make the country a world center of finance in the next 10 years has drawn praise and criticism both domestically and abroad, but strong economic growth and continued reforms have led to a stock market boom which may confirm the plausibility of such a goal. Present trends suggest the country will continue to see strong economic performance, although inflation and unemployment remain stubborn problems that have only been resolved slowly.
