NS Newspaper Ideas?

Asherius

i think that a NS newspaper has been done before, but never with much success. Is it possible to get a new one going? What caused the old ones to fail? I'm thinking of trying to start one. Does anyone have any ideas?

Some ideas-

Telegrams that link to the newspaper to anyone who signs up for subscriptions
Links to threads in the articles

Am I just being a naive n00b in thinking I can do something like this?

I think it has potential. Maybe you could, instead of a newspaper "per se", just make a thread for all nations to post news articles from their own bureaus.

I think that it'd need a central thread to be based out of, as a sort of root directory, that either has the latest news, or links to the stories in question.

As to why others failed, probably because there's too much going on in the NS world, and it'd be too much work to keep track of it all. (UN decisions, wars, alliances, storefronts, new weapons, genocides, multiple tech levels, etc.)

B.L., I like your idea, it seems more doable than a true 'paper'. (I can't edit posts anymore, for some wierd reason)

Only if people choose not to RP them. A UN member nation could easily agree to RP by the regulations set by the UN.

Does it matter where it ends up, it was a list of reasons why former ones failed. So lets just drop it before we end up bickering like 2 year olds, no offense, but I'm just starting to feel us slipping that way.

and why cover the UN that not really RP it about issues and making new UN laws so that leave II, NS
so of the two how many IIer post in NS and how most NSer post in II for a paper to work in telling what going on in both

i've look in NS and find their RPing odd

big question - why would I waste time reading through several pages of (often) senseless history to find a particular article about whatever it is that interests me at the moment?

I think you'd have problems keeping people interested in a news reel after so many pages before people stop reading/posting/thinking about the news in their country/world/universe. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but I know that I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the news in ALaHALAHAlhalhlahla (sorry to offend if it's a real NS country) when I could be more concerned about what's about to happen in some other thread that is much more interesting at the moment.

The problem with NS is that (hopefully) a lot of this stuff is just temporary - the main reason why this forum probably millions of threads that go unused after only three or four posts. So if you can find a way to catch people's attention to get them to read your articles, and to write (most importantly write) new articles, this proposal would have some merit.

Sorry to burst your bubble but we already have this. Well, it's not for newspaper stories per se, as it seems to be more geared towards TV reports, but in practice plenty of reports are in a newspaperesque format anyway. Too lazy to look for it now, but... NS International News Network or something, like that, started by... Asgarnieu?

Ah, got it. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=448264)

Hmm, I remembered wrongly, it is more of a TV thing. Still, it's there if you need it.

As someone who works in the industry I find the idea of an international newspaper somewhat... odd. TV is one thing, newspapers are another. Especially given the technology level that most MT people use in their roleplays - newspapers, UK newspapers at least, are almost universally losing sales, and in some eyes this is as a direct result of the internet. Somehow I don't think that an international newspaper would sell very well, and would promptly go out of business as a result.

I think it has potential. Maybe you could, instead of a newspaper "per se", just make a thread for all nations to post news articles from their own bureaus.

This is probably the best idea. Most NS nations, if they publish news at all, seem to maintain their own threads for their own news.

Wow, lots of responses...okay...

Lots of those news articles can get fairly large, though, can't they? Especially since this paper (or whatever it turns out to be) couldn't come out daily. We could post links to the original threads, but I think we should have some articles that summarize the events.

ever see that happen in II

We could have different sections, couldn't we? Of course, this runs the risk of being to time consuming...

Hopefully, we'd try to catch all the big threads. Since I don't have time to scan all of II and whatever else in included, I was thinking that maybe it'd be
something where if you see an interesting thread, you can send it to us. Hopefully they'd write up an article or summary when they send it to us...I just realized how much manpower this'll need...but it could work.
I want to advertise our tourist destinations and consumer goods.

It's just a little publication for NS, though. It's not going to be for sale. It will be given to anyone who wants it. it's just a little volunteer thing to keep people up to date.

And could someone post some of those links to those threads? I'm new here, and wouldn't know where to look...sorry...

You don't have to call the events, just the ones more pertinent to your national interest, or what your country is doing. And lack of success does not mean incompetence...look at Azazia/Oceania's The Financial Review and Pacitalia's The Economist for examples, or The Macabees' Fedala International. And there's also the Pacitalian Broadcasting Corporation International Service, which is a damn good job...subscribe to it via podcasts on iTunes or Mozilla Firefox.

Well, I'll say this much - if you never start, you'll never succeed. The worst that will happen is that no one will pay attention to it and it will die out like millions of other threads that have come before it. I can't guarantee it, and I won't say that I'll be a frequent contributor/reader, but someone out there might appreciate it.

My personal suggestion is to start small. Set up your own private news thread for your own country, and then try to expand it to include other countries. That - I think - is the key for success in getting at least a good pool of readers and contributors. Also, partner up with other major news threads - they'll have good ideas written out already and more than likely, you'll share readers and contributors.

But I stress again, a lot of NS is just temporary, so don't fret if this dies in two weeks or two months - people have a very low attention span in II, unless it involves blood and guts, and somehow involves a n00b in the crossfire.
