The old man lay still in his bed, surrounded by the finest doctors in the country, all of whom were utterly helpless to stop his slow decline. The illness that had plagued his senior life, and claimed the life of his first born son James, would now take him too. He had already named his eldest living child as his sole heir, and the inheritor to his title and lands.
His son, Daniel, now stood at his bedside, staring at the dying man with a strange expression, lacking the sorrow and mourning shared in the faces of those stood around the room. It was the first time in many generations that the second born child would inherit his families role in the country, and he would be able to make his mark, shape the country how it should be shaped, run it as it should be run. Without warning, the monitors attached to the old man began a cacophony of alarms, but their noise was unnecessary. No one responded, as no one could respond. The last hope of salvation for the King had failed.
Daniel turned, looked at his father, pale and withdrawn, as if his spirit had already left, and then walked away. He paused momentarily at the door to speak to the Royal Guard Captain stood their. "Captain, these physicians have failed in their task. I cannot accept failure. As heir apparent, and the named heir to the throne of the Righteous Monarchy, I hereby order you to take them from this place and hang them by their necks until dead."
The Captain paused momentarily, hesitant to kill those who had done nothing wrong, and had tried their hardest to save the old man they had all loved and respected, and who had loved them in return.
"What's the matter Captain," began the Heir, "can you no longer carry out a simple order?"
"Sorry my liege, I shall proceed."
As the doctors protested their innocence, and the sounds of screaming and shouting filled the grand corridors of the Royal Palace, Daniel walked away, smiling to himself. His personal guards fell in around him, and he was led to the Throne Room, where he would make his first public appearance and announce his father's passing.

"My fellow McLeodians, I speak to you today as the bearer of tragic news. Our noble and glorious leader, King James XII, has passed into the afterlife. The illness that has robbed me of my brother has now claimed my father too. Before his passing, the King named me as his successor. As such, I hereby instigate the traditional seven days of mourning reserved for the death of a Sovereign.
My father shall lay in the Chapel of Mourning here in the Royal Palace, which will be opened until the day of the funeral for those who wish to mourn him close at hand.
All non essential businesses will be closed, no military service may deploy on operation, and all citizens and officials must bear a sign of mourning at all times. Upon the seventh day we shall hold the funeral, and at that same time, my own coronation. Let us now remember him, brothers and sisters."
