Kingston, British Londinium

Consul Alistair Davidson found himself behind a glass and titanium podium, and in front of dozens of television cameras, hundreds of reporters, and the assembled Houses of Parliament. He was an impressive sight in his deep purple suit, the traditional symbol of office. The Consul was expected to embody the nation, and Sir Alistair certainly would do so today.

"Thrice in the past two decades, our homeland has been ravaged by the dogs of war. Thrice our nation has been reduced to a land of refugees, seeking the aid of an aggressor, and each time their nefarious agendas have attempted to destroy British Londinium. Yet, two thousand and nine years after the first Roman settlers landed on our shores, we still stand!"

Applause erupted from the audience.

"But today, a new era dawns over British Londinium. As I speak, three Ariane Five rockets are on their launchpads in Kingston. And their cargo will ensure our security. Today, three anti-ballistic satellites, armed with a highly powerful deuterium fluoride laser, will be placed in orbit. But this is merely the beginning, the beginning of what we are calling Operation Circumspect Escutcheon. Over the course of the next three months, a dozen more of these satellites will be placed in orbit, in addition to an orbital refueling station. Once this is complete, British Londinium will no longer have to fear the menace of ballistic missiles for any longer. No longer..."
