The old world will burn in the fires of industry. The forests will fall, a new order will rise. We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc. we have only to remove those who oppose us.

ISENGARD

Saruman: I want them armed and ready to march in two weeks.

Orc: But my lord there are to many, they cannot be armed in time, we dont have the moons.

Saruman: Build a dam, block the steam, work the furnaces night and day!

Orc: we dont have enough fuel to feed the fires.

Saruman: The forest of anthas lies on our doorstep....burn it!

Orc:yes!

Orcs were working round the clock, smoke began to rise from isengard, it could be seen from miles away.

A shadow looms over the lands of áthas. A threat looms in the west, the likes of which the Clans have seen before. The Armies of Saruman threaten the natural balance that has alweays existed in these lands. The Clans rally to defend themselves against this threat. The Grand Council of Four Unites meets to decide ths action the clans must take to defend their lands against the threat of the West.

Saruman and Grima sat in the tower of Orthanc.

Grima: how can we get across the river, it is heavily defended.

Saruman: If the river is breached the other side will fall.

Grima: Even if it is breached, it would take a number beyond reconening, thousands to storm the beach.

Saruman: ten thousand.

Grima: But my lord there is no such force.

Saruman walked out to his balcony, and viewd an army of over 10,000 Uruk-Hai, Grima stood in amazement.

The Elven defences were mobile, the Crows would find no heavily defended positions. Already, the Archers were ready for the attack that would surely come. The populace had fled to the great Fortress of Saoráid built into the forests of the East. Here the Army would make it's first stand.

To reach the river the main army would have to penetrate the woods of áthas, where many creatures and beasts dwelled, awaiting a victim to take the wrong path. The áthas Archers fired a volley into the river in order to deter the scouts, their accuracy would be needed at a later date.

10 of the Uruks fell from the volley, the rest retreated back to the army.

Saruman used his magic to arrive at the beach, and he called to the elves across the river.

Saruman: Why resist the inevitable, for the sake of your children surrender, and stop this.

The Elven Captain called back "We fight to defend the Nature that you seek to destroy. You destroy it, you destroy us and so to destroy it you must pass us first!"

The Uruk Scouts attempted to run through the woods to meet the Army. One of them heard a rustling from the bushes and raised his shield, with just a small gap to peer through. He heard the whoosh and didn't see the arrow implant itself in his eye socket. The rest were dead before they could react. The arrow ridden bodies were removed from the path and the Assailiants retreated back into the darkness of the shrub.

The Three Lanterns had also taken a keen interest in the affairs of the Athas' Invasion. Indeed, the famous Vindicators were probably the most interested of all - not least because many of those close to them were residing with the Eranor.

While they approached as swiftly as they could on fast horses, with a number of other local Three Lanterns groups, the Three Lanterners guarding the Eranor secretly decided to make at least some of themselves known.

Word was sent to the as-yet-to-be-named-major-city-state the-lanterns-operate-out-of of the impending invasion of the Athas, and to send an army to reinforce them.

---
Fortress of Saoraid, Exterior
A trio of Three Lanterners, one of each wing, approached the Fortress' gates, followed by one of the Eranor.

"We are here from the Three Lanterns, and wish to speak with your leaders!" the elf called up, banging on the gate to attract the attention of the guards.

The massive gates creeked slowly open. Inside was a bustle of activity as Soldiers and Civilians rushed about to prepare for an attack. An Elven Captain, flanked by two Archers, walked over to the horsemen and asked "What is your purpose here?"

((OOC: The horsemen are still moving posthaste across the borders. They won't be arriving 'til the trio have organised alliance.

The ones from Valgard will obviously take longer to arrive than a 3 of 20 Lanterners posted near the Eranor as guards.))

The three emissaries saluted the captain.

"We have come to negotiate alliance with your leaders against the threat of the White Hand."

The Captain nodded and signalled for them to follow him. They were brought up several flights of Marble steps before reaching a vast door. He opened it and beckoned them inside. The 20 members who made up the Grand Council stared and waiting until the door was closed. The Elf in the centre of the group said "Vindicators. We have not had your kind in these parts for many years. What have you come?"
Hakurabi
26-06-2007, 02:28
((Again, the Vindicators are coming, but have yet to actually show up. They'll be named.))

"While we are not the Vindicators, they have sent word and will be arriving in a few days. As you may or may not know, the Eranor have close links with the Vindicators, having emigrated after many of their members were rescued from slavery at the hands of the cruel Valgardians." said the one in the front.

"As such, we were posted with the Eranor to guarantee their safety from outside forces who would attack them, and by extension your people. We are prepared to enter into alliance with the Athas to defend them from Saruman's foul ways, should you choose to accept our hand in friendship."
Alversia
26-06-2007, 02:33
The man in the centre smiled and nodded "This is indeed a dark hour for our lands. We would be happy and grateful to accept any help that you can give to us. Our Army is well but small in number, anything that can be done to adrdress the balance will be apprecieted" The other Council Members nodded sombrely, the question of numbers had disturbed many of them and generated much arguement. Maybe this alliance was the answer to their problems.

"The Vindicators will be here in roughly three days with whatever forces they could muster - though I doubt it will be enough. However, we have sent word for an army to be sent, and hopefully they will arrive within a few weeks. In the meantime, we would like to request shelter in this fortress for ourselves and the Eranor."

26-06-2007, 02:50
The Council nodded in unison "I fear no number of soldiers you could bring will balance that issue. I am more than honoured to allow you to remain in this Fortress as our guests. Take a look over the defences if you wish and try to find any weaknesses" The group left and there was silence for a moment as every one thought

"So they cannot balance our numbers either" one said
"It was enivitable. We could never match our attackers in number" another replied
"Then it is in quality that our hopes lie" yet another said
The Chief spoke up "I am far happier at the prospect of our two nations going to war togather. Our Forts will hold the line. I can assure you all"

Silence returned to the room.

In the meantime, the Three Lanterners already in the fortress were preparing poisons and flasks of alchemist's fire, in preparation for the arrival of the Vindicators in a few days.

The one who had spoken to the council, Falaan, returned to the council chambers, wearing his sword and blue-gemmed Liberator Key as well as his chain shirt. Strapped across his chest was a couple of flasks of alchemist's fire, and clipped to his right side was a case of bolts. Slung across his right shoulder was a crossbow - not loaded, of course - and over everything he was wearing a hooded leather cloak.

Several were snatched by giant snake's as they sprung from their nests in the ground. Many more would be trapped in spider's webs and eaten slowly and painfully at a later date. An entire group were taken out by a very large and very hungry Bear as it snatched each up and threw him into a tree or the water. Horns crushed them by catching them in vines and closing their branches around them. A lucky few were shot by the Elven Archers who stuck to the paths but they were low in number. An entire column was hit by a large pack of very angry Wargs and ripped to shreds. Only those who stayed on the paths would live to see daylight and the river.

The Elves advantage is they knew to avoid the slag pits, whereas the Uruks didn't and thirty plummeted to a very nasty death. The Elves melted back into the surroundings to watch the battle between Uruk and nature. A Battle the Uruks were losing, badly.

The Giant Forest Scorpion raored it's anger as the crossbow bolts bounced off it's thick armour. It grabbed two of the Uruks and snapped them cleaning two, despite the armour. It stabbed another with it's sting and watched as he simply melted from the acid. The rest were beginning to lose their nerve, especially when the Scorpion jumped and landed on several more, stabbing them with it's legs.

"They're finally here!" he called down to the council, looking at the roughly hundred strong group which was approaching rapidly, the highly varied nature of their personal weapons and armour obvious even from this distance.

The horse mounted Vindicators and the 103 (just to give a 'roughly hundred number) dismounted, and Audeius came forward, knocking on the door.

Nisha, the Spymaster. Khadba, the Paladin. And last, but only through circumstance, Chirbell Naidiven, who we can't seem to get rid of but he comes in handy now and again."

At this last comment Chirbell shrugged sheepishly, his hoopak hitting the floor with a soft 'clack'.

The head Councillor turned to face each person as his name was mentioned. "I am Flaithiúil and I am the appointed head of the Four Athas clans until this threat has passed. We have repelled one invasion, with the help of the forests but they'll be back and this time, they'll not be so nieve and wander into the forest. Your skills will be much needed here" He paused for breath "Would you like to see the defences?"

"Of course. But if Saruman does not redouble his efforts soon, we must counterattack to crush the remanants of his forces." replied Audeius.

After a second, a thought occurred to him. "Oh, and if anything happens to go missing, ask Chirbell about it. It's a kender thing - they pick things up subconsciously."

Flaithiúil shook his head "I'm afraid that is not an option. We were victorious because they did not take the bottlenecks that are the Forest Paths. Therefore they were destroyed by the monsters. To attack them we would have to travel down the same bottlenecks and that would lead us to suffer heavy casualties and, as you can see, we are few enough in number already"

OOC: Magic (I'm no bugs expert) If it's TOO unrealistic (Considering this is a fantasy thread) Then feel free to add scorpion casualties to your list of survivors.

OOC: What about the Horns in LOTR? They destroyed an entire army. Like I said, stick to the known routes and the army will not be touched. They need fresh meat and if it wanders into their lair en masse they're going to take advantageOOC: To note this is High Fanasy which means in general it is quite more restirctive then Lord of the Rings, and as such things that exist in our world due play an important in what things can do, bug size (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insects#Locomotion). Also, things like the Horns could not really exist in big numbers in this world, anywhere.

OOC: In that case, I would be more than delighted if NC added the casualties of the Scorpion to his list of survivors along with 50% of the Horn casualties. He can throw them against me later as well then.
What I'm hearing so far is
1. My arrows'll bounce off him at anythign but close range
2. If I destroy his army he can make a new one
3. His men will knock my men down like sticks in close quarters

Shall I raise the white flag now or when he marches through?

((You could always retcon it to 'stupidly dangerous forest'. And this is still High Fantasy. Not bog standard Past Tech. High Fantasy.

Incidentally, LOTR is considered one of the archetypal works of High Fantasy - it practically defines High Fantasy. To deny that would be to drift from the theme of High Fantasy entirely.))

"Then tonight we will head out with a small group and burn away what Saruman has left in your lands. Without an offense, Saruman will be free to ever redouble his attacks until he has wiped your forest from the land. If nothing else, we must fight an offensive when the army arrives."

As well, you get giant apes? Do you believe that is fair as the scropions are still dang big, but cannot grow to the size of a car.

Saruman thought how he could destroy the defenders, with out such casualties, then he thought: The roads, if we stick to the rodes the creatures will not attack.

He approached Lurtz: Bring more men, i want that forest burned to the ground. Leave none alive.

Lurtz began preparing for the second invasion.

(OOC: Time slows down now, because I'm doing a specific night action before you can move.

EDIT: Also, could you give a rough idea of how the camp is set up?)

The Vindicators crept close to Saruman's camp, and began to plan their next move.

"Alright, Baisriel, you and Audeius get to a good vantage point, and try to find a good point of attack. I'll back you up, and keep an eye out for scouts." said Red-Eye, quickly sketching a rough diagram of the camp. "Have a look for the barracks, and fire a signal arrow at it, and Khadba will hit it with a fireball."

The dwarf hefted the odd-looking staff of fireball.

"Then, Nisha and Chirbell will use the distraction to get closer and eliminate the leader. In the meantime the rest of us will go round and start burning the other tents to create a distraction. Jolgar will try to find the food supplies and lob Alchemist's fire into it."

"Right. You heard Red-Eye. Let's go."

---
Baisriel moved first, creeping across to a good hill above the encampment, his leafweave armour and cloak magically camoflaging him against the surroundings. Audeius followed next, taking care to move behind obstacles, the dark rendering him almost undetectable.

Baisriel then stood, the wild elf almost totally invisible against the night in combination with his almost total lack of movement and camoflage provided by his outfit.

Red-Eye hung back, and kept an eye out for Uruk-Hai with his sharp sense of smell and eyesight honed by years of tracking at night.

Khadba, Surani, Nisha and Chirbell moved around to the other side, waiting for the signal.

The other Three Lanterners lay in wait with Red-Eye, waiting for Baisriel to give the first signal.

OCC: It is in the shape of a circle, and Lurtz is in the center, the barracks in close to the center, there are quite a few Uruks so its going to be hard.

Lurts was sharpening his sword, while the others huddled around the campfire, seeking its warmth.

more Uruk-Hai were creeping into the camp by the hour.

(OOC: In anticipation, Scand, you did say the maximum radius was 2m on spells. Thus, my fireball detonates a 2m radius sphere.

Completely within the rules.)

Baisriel spotted the gigantic barracks quite easily, and nocked the signal arrow, drawing back carefully. While there was an ongoing debate about accuracy at range, all he needed to do at the moment was put a single arrow into a literal wide side of a barn, and promptly did so.

Group A (which is what we'll call Red-Eye's force) immediately began moving, quickly making way down around to flank the encampment.

Khadba and Surani quickly responded, as the alchemist's shock in the arrow triggered and created a large spark. Khadba knelt and unslung his dwarven fire staff, resting it on his shoulder, while Surani prepared to launch a few fireballs.

Good morning, Saruman. he muttered, triggering his large dwarven construction and casting a specially developed fire spell through it. The staff amplified it and a large plume of flame erupted from both sides, sending a fireball into the building, where it detonated with tremendous force. Surani followed up by evoking eight fireballs in quick succession, directing them to fall around the campsite, while Nisha and Chirbell quickly made their way round to the campground, while Khadba and Surani got up and ran, using the cover of night to retreat to a safer vantage point.

It occurred to them that this might have worked better if the Athas had agreed to counterattack.

(OOC: Group B is Khadba and Surani, while Group C is Nisha and Chirbell)

(OOC: Yes, they hit. There's no rational way you could dodge that, having no knowledge of their location and moving slowly. Not to mention they're, y'know, fireballs and lightning bolts which pretty much go where you command them to.)

The response was surprising, but it really failed to achieve anything.

Khadba and Surani had reached a new vantage point, and noticing that the Uruk-Hai were now spreading out evenly, decided to fire again. Khadba reshouldered his firestaff, while Surani prepared a lightning bolt. If there was one disadvantage to bombarding with magic, it was that a volley tended to exhaust you of magic.

Another great plume of fire was seen, and a fireball slammed into the nearest ranks of Uruk-Hai, throwing dirt, grass and person into the air alike. Once Khadba had gotten their attention, a lightning bolt arced out from Surani's hands and coursed through multiple Uruk-Hai, leaving no question as to their location.

Then they packed up and got to moving again, this time towards the road.

Groups A and C moved carefully, and kept out of the way of the Uruk Hai.

(OOC: Doesn't matter. He hasn't tried to put it out, it's still on fire. Besides, my other guys will be along in a bit to make sure it burns to the ground.

NC's Uruk Hai are moving slowly, and they have no idea where I am. If you have someone who's good at aiming that paintball, and you don't know where they are, and you're moving slowly, you're gonna get hit. Especially if that paintball then proceeds to blow up.

And another thing: Magical fire cannot itself be put out. If I launch a fireball underwater, it still explodes and superheats the water around it. The resultant fire can be, of course. Magefire is known to be somewhat fleeting. You can't actually put out a fireball by dumping water all over it at the right time, but it will prevent it from setting things on fire for too long.)

Surani and Khadba, now at the mouth of the path, fired off another fireball and lightning bolt, making their position clear again.

Group A, now left to their own devices with all the Uruk-Hai rushing off, moved swiftly into the camp. Audeius and Red-Eye moved to the barracks, sweeping the area around it with a group of Red Lighters, before bombarding it with more Alchemist's fire and setting it completely alight - to the point where any water stores they had would be insufficient to save it or anything inside.

Jolgar, with the others, sought out all the food supplies and plied them amply with alchemist's fire.

Nisha and Chirbell also moved into the campsite, and raided the tents for any plans, burning them as they finished with each.

Baisriel, with his sharp night vision, kept watch for any sign of returning Uruk-Hai, keeping his bow with an arrow nocked.
