The Federation Invades Puerto Rico (EFJ)

Vice Admiral Vincent Lostar surveyed his carrier battle group, the first to be deployed by the Federation. It was time to start acquiring new lands for the Federation, and the first target was a close one... Puerto Rico. They didn't expect much resistance, but were ready for anything. Over three thousand Marines would make the initial assault with air cover and sea bombardment, and once they took a suitable airfield, more regular infantry would follow. Already the island was appearing over the horizon. Smiling, he ordered the four Executor-class transport ships to move forward, under the cover of five close air support Portos-class catamarans and the planes off of their Vengeance-class carrier, the FNS Skyward.

Total Initial Force (more troops coming after beachhead is established):
29 ships
[1] Vengeance-class aircraft carrier
[2] Helina-class battlecruisers
[4] Adrai-class air defense destroyers
[4] Atlanta-class AEGIS destroyers
[5] Grevant-class missile frigates
[5] Portos-class close air support catamarans

OOC: Could you, um, provide me some info on those ships/supplies? Are they re-named RL designs or domestic designs (and if domestic...I'll need to know some capabilities before I can formulate an accurate defense).

EFJ is an Earth, yeah. You can still sign up if you want...

Over-the-horizon radar stationed on the small island picked up the forces inbound before they were in range of fire-but it wasn't as if the fate that was obvious could be nixed. However, across the island, the air strips that were there-Puerto Rico had no navy to speak of-were prepping up F-104 Starfighters, F-16A Falcons, and OH-58D Kiowa Warriors (OOC: Per the websites of the RL Puerto Rican bases). It would have to do. The 3,200-man Puerto Rican guard (ie, the Nat'l guard forces there) were underequipped for a modern force-but like the air assets, they would have to do. The civilians were being ushered to stay indoors-but the Puerto Ricans had a fierce pride. Even if the military failed-likely-the day would not come sweet.

There was an island to protect-a culture, a history, a pride.

There was an island to protect-a culture, a history, a pride.

Vice Admiral Lostar looked at the small island and smiled softly. A walk in the park, this would not be, but it would be a decent test of the Federation's naval based prowess.

"Any word from the Puerto Ricans, Lieutenant?"

"None, sir. Nothing is coming off the island over the airwaves."

"Strange to say the least... fire off a general message in that area, Lieutenant. I want the government to hear it, maybe we can end this day bloodlessly."

"Roger that, sir, ready when you are." The Admiral cleared his throat and spoke into his microphone.

"To the government and citizens of Puerto Rico, greetings. My name is Vincent Lostar, Vice Admiral in the Ambrosian navy, and commander of the fleet sitting off your coast. I wish to speak with a member of your government or military. I would like to organize a peace deal, if possible. We are not here to destroy your country, your culture, or your people. We wish to improve your lives, by incorporating you into our great Federation which is expanding in this area. Negotiate, and you will be allowed to keep your military, your economy, and your culture. Your government will continue to govern you. All we ask is that you join us, and pledge allegiance to the Federation. Resist, and we will be forced to take any and all means necessary to quell such resistance. Should your government choose to resist, we encourage all civilians to remain indoors, as to limit casualties. Cities will not be bombed, and only military installations will be targeted. We hope to hear from you soon. Lostar, over and out." The Vice Admiral nodded to the comm officer, who stopped the recording and sent the message out over the airwaves.

"What do we do now, sir?"

"We wait, Lieutenant. Radio Arkanis (RL Havana) and tell them we have attempted negotiations, but to get the 1st Airborne ready for immediate deployment."

"Roger that, sir." The Admiral turned back to the island and looked out through his binoculars.

"And get the fighters in the air. We may need some fighter cover."

The Puerto Rican government was not willing to commit to slavery-but keeping the nation together, and not just a sheet of plate glass, was fairly important as well-naturally. So when the message came in from the Federation fleet, the response the Puerto Ricans would give came up quickly-to ensure that liberties of the island that had always known the endless sun and sky would endure.

Reply from the Puerto Rican Government

This is the Puerto Rican Minister of State. Your force is intimidating, but Puerto Rico has weathered worse-however, we have no wish to test the fates this time around. We do wish to make clear, however, that should Puerto Rico enter the service of the Federation, that the freedoms and rights to succeed of every citizen in Puerto Rico can not be abridged-if so, Puerto Rico will never submit, and every inch of land will be contested in meters of blood. This is a free island, and even if we were to join your confederation, we would still expect to be free.

"Admiral, we have a response from the Puerto Rican government!" The Lieutenant came running in, waving a slip of paper in his hand. The Vice Admiral grabbed it from him and started reading it to himself, allowing a slow smile to form on his face.

"Lieutenant, radio Arkanis. Tell them we won't be needing those troops. Air Commander, get those planes back on the deck. Helmsman, bring us around, we'll be pulling out of Puerto Rican waters and back into international ones."

"Sir?" Came a questioning voice.

"The Puerto Ricans wish to negotiate, and not be bombed out of existence. Quite wise of them. We will be pulling into international waters for the time being."

"Roger that, sir."

"Comm, get me a microphone. We're going to send a message back to them."

"Roger, sir. Ready when you are." The Vice Admiral slowly cleared his throat, and then spoke clearly.

"Minister of State Iglesias, and honored Puerto Rican people, greetings. Our fleet is pulling into international waters as a sign of good faith after the Minister's message, as well as to show that when Puerto Rico joins our great Federation, they will truly be free."

"When this matter is finalized, there will be no occupation, there will be no oppression. You will be able to continue to fly your flag side-by-side the Ambrosian flag. The citizens and government of the Federation welcome the citizens of Puerto Rico with open arms and open hearts. Let us, together, be a shining beacon to the world of how conflict can be resolved, not with guns and bombs and bloodshed, with with talk, listening, and compromise."

"We will remain in international waters until the formal integration is finalized. If you would wish to speak with me, or any higher ranking official of the Federation, please do not hesitate to ask. Vice Admiral Lostar, out." With a smile now firmly planted on his face, Lostar cut the transmission and sat down in a chair. For once... for once he could bring everyone home. And that feeling was a feeling like no other.
