The Pampas Republic of Whittlesfield (also known as just Whittlesfield) is located in South America, occupying the same area as Uruguay, with various offshore and overseas possessions. As well as Uruguay itself, the Sub-Antarctic Islands of Thurston Island, Berkner Island, and the South Orkney islands also send representatives to the Parliament, and are known as the Sub-Antarctic Whittlian Territories. Norfolk Island, located in the Pacific Ocean to the east of Australia, is overseen by a Sheriff, appointed by the Government, and the island is known as the Bailiwick of Norfolk Island.

Geography

The mainland consists of low plains and plateaux. In the south-east, the hills can rise to up to 1700 feet. It is bordered by the River Uruguay to the east, and the Rio de la Plata estuary to the south.

Economy

Important industries in Whittlesfield include textile manufacturing, food processing, oil refining, steel and aluminium production, and electrical equipment. 8% of the land is cultivated, and on this land citrus fruits, vineyards, and rice fields are grown. The main crops grown are sugar cane and beets, rice, wheat, potatoes, corn, and sorghum.

Mineral resources are relatively scarce on the mainland, being mainly imported from offshore extraction points. Hydroelectric plants have been built on many of the major rivers, and supply a large percentage of the power.

Military

The military is divided up into the traditional services; Army, Navy, and Air Force, but there are also two other independent, albeit smaller, branches, which have been founded in recent times; the Strategic Missile Command, and the Space Agency, both of which are run by a mixture of personnel from the main three services. Conscription is mandatory for all able bodied men and women, and usually begins at the age of 18, but can be any time up to the age of 30. National Service lasts 18 months, after which time the conscript is offered the choice to remain in the army as a Professional. The Space Agency and the Strategic Missile Command are only open to Professionals, as are certain positions in the other services, such as Pilot, which represents the high level of training required in such positions.

In recent times the Republican Army of Whittlesfield (RAoW) has been scaled back, which reflects a change in doctrine by the General Staff. Gone are the mass infantry divisions, and in their place are Mechanised Brigades and Motorised Divisions, giving the Army more flexibility and power. The army was designed from the onset as a defensive force, to defend the borders, but maintains the ability to engage and destroy enemy forces in neighbouring territories, should the need arise.

When Whittlesfield needs to project its power to far off lands, it can call upon it's Marines, which are a branch of the Republican Navy of Whittlesfield (RNoW). Equipped with amphibious vehicles and landing craft, these troops specialise in amphibious and direct strike operations. The Navy itself is highly advanced, and always at the forefront of technology. One of the main roles of the Navy is to ensure the sealanes of the South Atlantic are free, to allow shipping to pass between the mainland and the Sub-Antarctic Whittlian Territories.
