Uphaus Government Announces Achievement
by Charles Sims, AP
Daneils, Uphaus-- In this quite little town only fourty five minute form the capitol, Prentice, nearly one thousand dignitaries and spectators gathered to watch the launch of Uphaus's new Longecontineo rocket. The rocket, also called the L-1, derives its name from the latin words for "long reach." Justin Carlson, Senior secretary to Duxapudaequus Rubens Giffin, acknowledged that the L-1 had indeed left Earth's atmosphere in its trajectory. "Its actually quite exhilirating," said Neil Garret, head of the research project behind the development of the rocket, "Now that we have done this I think that within a decade we will be able to have communication satelites so that we don't have to rely on other nations to provide them for us." Uphaus is currently bound to land lines as the former provider of these systems declined to renew its contract after the election of the Duxapudaequus in 1999, beleiving that the election of a former royal family member was an indication that democracy was soon to fail in Uphaus.
This launch came as a political victory for Giffin as his opponenets in the upcoming election have accused him of stagnating the nation's economy and technological development with his policies that give aid to the lower classes. "If people can get paid just for being poor, what is going to inspire them to aspire to more than they have?" Moore Staves, the Duxapudaequus's main political opponent, questioned last month. Staves could not be reached for comment today.
Roy Cartweight, another contender for the Duxapudaequicy in next week's election, had heated words to share today. "We are a small nation and should not be so agresively pursuing these means of making war. Giffin is a war-monger and it si clear he is behind the effort to build this rocket. We are treading in very dangerous territory, and if he is allowed to continue leading the country his aggressive ways will get us in a war that will devestate us." Carlson denied Cartweight's accusations. "The Dux did push for this achievement, of course, but it was private citizens who undertook this task, without any government funding and not one cent form any of the foundations on which Dux. Giffin sits on the board. Additionally, this rocket could be modified to carry a warhead, but the model we launched today could not and did not carry a warhead, nor are there any plans to create a warhead for these types of rockets. The Dux's motives are to simply start the development of our own space program, primarily so that we may put communications satellites into orbit. Rubens Giffin has always supported a strong national defense, but he firmly desires peace for our country and that is the attitude he brought into the office of Duxapudaequus when he was elected." Giffin could not be reached for comment, but Carlson assured us he was authorized to speak on his behalf.
It remains to be seen if the launch today will affect the outcome of the election, but one thing is for sure. Rubens Giffin's legacy as Duxapudaequus will include ushering in the age when our humble nation joined the proud ranks of those with the capability to reach space.
