Pirates of the Caribbean RP Interest Thread

Alright, first off, let me say this. This is NOT, I repeat, IS NOT, a POTC rip-off. There will be no Captain Jack Sparrows, Will Turners, Elizabeth Swan (Turner)s, Captain Barbosas, etc. They are all property of Disney Corp., so we can't use them.

Now that that's out of the way, this thread is to gauge interest in doing a "Pirates"-like roleplay. Pretty much, time frame and the setting are the same, you can just be the British Royal Navy (East India Trading Company) or a pirate captain with your ship(s). Or a governor of a port, or pretty much anything you want.

So yeah, is there interest for this, or am I just plain stupid and crazy?

Bare Bones Plot

Let's say the Caribbean is pretty divided. There are ports that are openly Pirate-supporting, and there are also ports for each of the four countries. And let's just say that there is a certain map that leads to whatever. The one problem is that the ship carrying said map sank in a hurricane... and now the case is on to actually find said map (no one will, but it allows people to be moving around, either within that plot, or just sailing for fun.)

Definately interested. Now, other nationalities are allowed, right? After all, 4 nations had claim to the Caribbeans at one point. . .

God damn this thread really took off, lol.

To answer some questions... we want this as real as possible. So no Kracken's or Flying Dutchman's popping up anywhere. Yes, other nations can be involved... English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese were the four nations if I'm not mistaken. Also adds an interesting element of international warfare plus the pirates.

Plot... well, this was originally planned to be pretty free-flowing... but it needs some semblance of a story, otherwise we just have dudes with ships and guys in ports running around and not doing anything constructive.

Let's say the Caribbean is pretty divided. There are ports that are openly Pirate-supporting, and there are also ports for each of the four countries. And let's just say that there is a certain map that leads to whatever. I'll start posting a roster on the first post for who is on which side.

Bio:

Name: Ciro Marinaio

Alias: Il Italiano

Age: 24

Nationality: Italian

Flag Sailing Under: Spain

Rank: Captain

Occupation: Privateer (hired to act as a Pirate against unfriendly nations)

Description: At 5'7", Ciro is rather tall for his Italian ancestry. He has very dark brown, curly hair, cut so that it hangs an inch above his shoulders, and blue eyes, a Sicilian trait inherited from his mother. A small tuft of hair has grown from his chin, but he has no other facial hair. His normal attire is a green bandana covering his hair, a plain white shirt, light brown trousers, and a regular-brown colored pair of naval boots. In battle, Ciro is known to put on a hardened leather vest for slight protection.

Weaponry (training and items): Ciro carries a cutlass, a popular weapon in Italy and a memento of his father. Made of Damascus steel, a forging process known in the Middle East, the metal of the blade seems to have a watery appearance, fitting for a sailor. The handle is protected by a basket hilt.

Ciro also carries one pistol upon boarding, and has been known to use the weapon as a club in some cases. He has also been trained in the use of the rapier, though not as extensively as Royal naval captains.

History: Born in Genoa, Ciro was the son of a trader who sold his wares throughout the Mediterranean. He learned the ways of the sailor from his father and often spent time down at the docks and naval yards, helping in various odd-jobs with the men who worked there. When he was 16, his father left for a voyage to Barcelona. Along the way, a group of French corsairs, abandoning their "holy" mission and instead becoming greedy murderers, boarded his ship and killed him. Upon learning of this, Ciro left his mother when he turned 18 and tavelled to Greece to join a Corsair ship, in the hopes that he may capture French shipping to revenge his father. He participated in several succesful raids, his anger fueling his attacks, and the French along the Mediterranean trade routes soon learned to fear the Greek pirates. Finally, however, a French warship hunted down the corsair and destroyed it near Sardinia. From there, the young Italian travelled to Spain to seek passage to the New World, believing there was nothing left for him in Europe. Based on his experience in naval combat, Holy Spain gave him training in navigation, dueling, and ship-to-ship combat. Then, at 23, he set sail for the Caribbean, and was told to seek a letter of marque from the governor of Havana. This Ciro obtained, and from there he learned that France and Spain were currently at war. Smiling inside, he took up the name of Il Italiano, and raided the lower half of the Lesser Antilles and the French ports on Hispaniola for a year. . .

Ship: In accordance with being a privateer, Ciro wanted a ship that was both fast and powerful. For this reason, he asked for a Brig, and this he recieved.

Weight: 170 lbs
Ship: Immortal Voyage
Facts on the ship: 24 cannons (4 above deck, each side, 8 below deck, each side. Below deck guns midway up the side of the ship, in a straight line). While not the most heavily armed ship, the Immortal Voyage makes up for it with speed and maneuverability. Widely regarded as one of the fastest ships in the Caribbean. For the moment, travels alone.
Captain facts: Harland is seen as somewhat as a gun-for-hire. Has been known to work for other nations, but is generally considered a pirate. However, he will sometimes work for the highest bidder. The trick is just to know his price... and his location.

About New Ausha's request to be a Dutch Merchantman, he would actually be on the side of the Dutch: I just noticed this but the Portuguese had no real power in the Caribbean, only in South America (namely Brazil). The Dutch, however, had three major ports: St. Eustatius and St. Martins in the Northern half of the Lesser Antilles, and Curacao (not quite sure of the spelling) to the east of Maracaibo (once again not sure of spelling).

anyway, here's the bio:

Name: Sabine Ciel

Age: 21

Nationality: French Caribbean

Flag Sailing Under: Spanish (under Ciro Marinaio

Rank: N/A

Occupation: Was a Bar Waitress, is now a Privateer aboard the Furia Giusta

Description: Sabine stands around 5'5", and, due to the rough upringing of living in a colony, has a well-toned physique. Her long, dark hair goes perfectly with her French ancestry, but her green eyes are something no one has been able to explain. She commonly wears a loose, blue top with a flowing, white bottom that takes the shape of something of a cross between a long skirt and skin-tight pants.

Weaponry (training and items): Though she has had no formal training in using a gun or sword, Sabine has learned the art of knife fighting; after all, one needs such skills to survive in the Caribbean. As since, she carries a weapon taken from a dead trader's body, a curved, heavily-ornamented long dagger made of some strange metal that appears red in the sun but purple when there is no light. She wears the scabbard on a black belt around her middle, and the scabbard hangs behind her.

History: Sabine was born in Petit Goave, and had lived quite the normal life until she was 16. Her father had always had a drinking problem, and spent most of his time regularly in the tavern. Her mother was constantly working to pay for his debts, for her father's job at the docks did not earn enough to support both his family and his habit.

Due to this, Sabine spent much of her time outside of her house, avoiding the fights and arguments and instead spending her time talking to the many travellers coming into and out of Petit Goave, as well as staring at the massive ships and learning everything she could about them.

When she turned 16, her father was finally thrown out of the tavern for not being able to pay his debts, but the owner wanted the money anyhow. Her mother could not pay either, and so the tavern owner went to the Governor of Petit Goave to have the matter settled.

The resulting verdict banished Sabine's father from Petit Goave, and essentially made her and her mother the tavern owner's slaves in order to pay off the debt. To get the money back faster, the owner sold Sabine's mother to a passing English ship bound for the plantations of the colony of South Carolina. Ever since that day, for 5, gruelling years, Sabine had worked and slaved in the tavern to pay for her parents' faults. She longed for freedom, to be taken away from Petit Goave, from Hispaniola: she longed to just go anywhere, anywhere she could.

When Captain Ciro Marinaio came to Petit Goave, she saw her chance. She abandoned her duty, and fled with Ciro to the hope of a new life. The thrill of adventure, treasure, and freedom could finally begin for sabine ...

I completely ignored this thread in the IC and wasted time writing out the start of my part! What a fool I am.

Anyway, my captain;

Name: Captain Henry Smythe Fitzroy

Age: 34

Nationality: Irish

Flag "sailing" under: Pirate

Height: 6'3"

History: Captain Fitzroy was born in Cork, Ireland. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a washerwoman. He is said to take after his maternal grandfather in looks, with a long, straight nose, a firm jaw, a flashing smile, large dark eyes, curly brown hair and a long beard, tied up with ribbons. Fitzroy ran away to sea at the age of sixteen, when he became a cabin boy upon the flagship of Captain Mary "Red Legs" O'Haran, the famous Irish highwaywoman and pirate queen of Galway.

A nymphomaniac, cutpurse and inordinate coward, Fitzroy has for years been more lucky than he deserves, having escaped the wrath of countless port authorities, judges, naval captains, angered husbands, angered fathers, (on several occasions, angered wives), and assorted drunks, gamblers, whores and other pirates. His greatest friend and confidante is his wife, Petunia Fitzroy, who resides in Kensington, London. She takes care of their daughter, Sarah, and Fitzroy visits them whenever he is in England. He suspects that Petunia is almost as unfaithful as he is, but with his cowardice and her strong personality, her beauty and his charm, they are both suited to each other perfectly.

Fitzroy's other associates include his benefactor, Madame Chang, who also supports his family in London. She is a villainous, wicked proprietress of the Nassau opium den, and other assorted criminal practices. There is also Solomon Levy, a Jewish money-changer in Trinidad; Don Esuago de Caracas, captain of the guard in Cartagena in Columbia; Raswan Durbahz, a Moorish pirate captain from the Barbary coast; and Sophie and Antoinette de Bains, two twin sisters who are expert thieves based in Cap-Haïtien, Hispaniola.

Ship: The Gallows Overture, Fitzroy's latest ship, was sunk in the Azores recently. This is the last known whereabouts of Captain Fitzroy, although reports are emerging that he is back in the Caribbean.

Note I: As a point of interest, Captain Fitzroy is based on that of Harry Paget Flashman, from the popular series of Flashman books by George Macdonald Fraser. In which case, as in the case of Flashman, Fitzroy might well meet several historical characters as well as other role-players, please do not infer any factual information from my posts. They may be totally inaccurate, as well as out of context.

Note II: If you haven't already read them, I would strongly recommend the Flashman series and any of Macdonald Fraser's other books, especially, The Pyrates, from which my inspiration is gathered also.

History: Born in the first son of the Governer of York, England. Stark attended the Royal Navy Academy and his family purchased him a comission as a Lieutenant aboard HSM Monmouth, a fifth rate frigate seeing duty along the Africa coast.

Over the years Stark has rose steadily through the ranks through a combination of political influence, martial skill and raw talent. He went on to command HMS Monmouth for three years, seeing service against pirates on twelve occasions and the Spanish twice.

Promoted at age 25 to Captain, Stark served the 17th Squadron based in the Carribbean aboard HMS Emerald for four more years. He was recalled to England for his comission ceremony to Commodore and waited while a new ship was built for him to command.

After two years, Commodore Stark sailed from London to the Carribbean aboard the brand new HMS Invincible, a shining 2nd rate ship of the line carrying ninety two guns.

Woa, hold on a minute: a ship of the line?

That thing could decimate anything else it comes across being as its a Royal Navy ship, but it wouldn't even be used as a pirate hunter either: it's too valuable.

What role would the Invincible serve, then, I wonder?

(yes, that's an actual question, just out of curiousity.)

Flagship of 17th Squadron. Charged with protecting vital interests in the region. Plot that if you want to know, you'll have to find out in-character. ;)
