History
Following the various forms of reforms set out by the Shah in the late fifties and early sixties Islamic fundamentalists began to spur attacks against him. The Shah decided to allow the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to re-enter the country. During the Arab-Israeili War of 1973 Iran didnt embargo the west and used the money to help modernize the country. After the conflict Iran began to focus of missle development and economic revolution.
In 1979 the Shah didntleave the country and instead began to steady his rule by getting the support of the armed forces. With the Ayatollah back in the country the Shah had his enemies close at hand. He managed to avoid any open rebellion by having paid assasins kill off most of his enemies within the army. He kept support using stronger political means and held a Referendum to decide whether Iran would be taken over by the Ayatollah. The vote was not rigged, but the Shah held out because the people were in fear of the military.
As a compromise the Shah lowered corruption by engaging a form of political purge of the government in 1980. He closed off some ties with the west to stay more friendly with the Shia majority in the government, and he allowed more freedom to ALL political parties within the country, even including the Communists.
The Shah and his sucessors maintained control of the country and slowly began to turn the country into a form of Paternal Autocracy. Bu 1993 the Shahs held power but the officials were elected by the people and represented them in government.
In 1997 the armed forces went through a reform and the government purchased more modern weapons and other new equipment. The reform is still underway in the airforce and army. The navy is the most modern of the branches and has ships that are advanced for there limited number.
