The Western Allies gave permission to the West Germans to organize a constitutional assembly which met in Bonn in 1948. The assembly drew up a new republican constitution, called the Basic Law. This constitution went into force in May, 1949 creating the West German Federal Republic. This West German government was given almost complete independence. The first president of the new republic was Theodor Heuss. However, the most important Government leader was Konrad Adenauer wheo presided over the constitutional assembly and became West Germany's first chancellor. West Germany became a part of such international organizations as the European Payments Union, the Council of Europe, and the European Coal and Steel Community. On May 5, 1955 the United States, Great Britain, and France signed treaties with West Germany making it a completely independent country. Shortly afterwards West Germany joined NATO. West Germany became a focus of the Cold War with its juxtaposition to East Germany, a member of the subsequently founded Warsaw Pact. The former capital, Berlin, was also divided into East Berlin and West Berlin, but West Berlin was completely surrounded by East German territory. In the 1950's West Germany's economy began to grow largely because of the replacement of the currency with the Deutsche Mark. With a growing Industrial Sector and with wars going on abroad countries began to purchase more and more from West Germany which also helped its economy. Today it has the largest economy in Europe and the 4rd largest in the world after the US, Japan, and the USSR. It has a strong military to defend against threats from the East and South and has many USAF and Army bases.
