OOC Poll: How large is your military and where does most of the manpower go?

Axis Nova
26-05-2007, 17:08
Mine, personally, is rather small for my size-- 10-12 million men at most, a lot of which are either logistics or in the air navy. Things that factor into this are a relatively small amount of territory to defend (thus allowing concentration of forces), a lack of much in the way of imperialistic foreign policies, and high expenses in other areas (maintaining a megacity isn't cheap!).

However, a very large amount of money (comparatively) is spent on training and equipment, to make sure that my military is quite capable. Military size is likely to go down in the future due to the Icarus Project.

I'll be reforming, enlargening, and restructuring parts of my military soon, so I'll just post what is going to happen.
Although I should note my "military" includes fire, police, and emergency medical services. But after the resizing all branches of my military, which there are plenty, will be no larger then 80,000,000 personell. That includes all the government, the temple guard, republican guard, army, navy, air force, and territorial guard. Most of that will be in the territorial guard, and will thusly be emergency medical, fire and police services with a reserve military status, as well as park rangers and such.
Concentration will be on armour based land power, with the navy concentrating on coastal defence with limited projection or raiding capability. The air force will be redesigned to air defence and local power projection (For historical reasons). The army, temple guard and republican guard will be transformed to armoured formations with support from armoured infantry in a sort of heavy APC/IFV hybrid vehicle. Infantry formations outside of airborn light infantry will be removed almost entirely, with the exception of border guard units of the regular army who man the massive fortified border to Sumer's north and east. But those will be reduced with the incorporation of more advanced equipment there.

The TSRT-M consists of 104.4 million personnel total, the Red Tide Military is capable of supporting such numbers because the soldiers recieve no pay and no benefits, while training simply consists of putting the Hallucagenic Control Collar. The TSRT-A recieves the most manpower, with 50,000,000 people in it. About 65% of these are members of the logistics branch, lower then other nations due to the extreme ammunition standardisation.
The TSRT-N recieves 25,000,000 people with the TSRT-AF recieving 25,000,000. Another 4,000,000 goes to the Current Gaurd, the elite shock units of the Red Tide Military. The remaining 400,000 people are in the world of special forces.

26-05-2007, 17:58
The Cravanian Imperial Military currently tops off at about 11,800,000 men, including logistics and professionally trained reservists. (approx .3% of the total population) The entire military is a volunteer force, highly trained and armed with the best equipment money can buy.

Current distribution of manpower is about 3,750,000 in the Army, 2,700,000 in the Air Force, and 5,350,000 in the Navy. (40% of which are Marines)

The active Imperial Navy is 374 combat ships total, however the reserves are in the excess of about 2000~ escort ships to defend ports and trade routes. They're all older ships I've since decommissioned from active service.

Heh. For once in the three years I've been here, I can actually answer that question decently...

In the entire military (excluding Samurai, who are PRA employees, not civil servants), there's a grand total of about 60 million soldiers. Out of that, 20 million or so serve in the Otagian Regular Navy (with roughly 3000 or so combat vessels, I think), while the rest serve in the OR Army, which takes on the roles that an air force would normally serve as well.

PRA's Samurai forces, on the other hand, are far fewer and far between, with about fifteen million across the country, operating as law enforcement officers for the most part.

I operate roughly 4 Million Regular Soldiers. Most of them being in the Army with the Airforce just edging out the navy for second place. Our Army is based around an altered Combined Arms Doctrine were as the Armored Unit is considered the forefront of the combat unit.

We also operate a Reserve force of 6-10 Million depending on the current estimates. Again most of them are in the Army with Airforce second and the navy last.

Male citizens are conscripted at age 17 for 3 years. Talented soldiers will be asked to stay for a 30 year contract and become an NCO. Further proven NCO's will be sent to military academies to train as an Officer. Upon finishing theior conscription term they will immediately become part of the reserve for the duration of their life, as well as being given the right to vote, and the right to a spouse.

Anyone who refuses to participate in military service will be declared a traitor and will be publically executed.

Women are barred from military service, except for the Medical Corps and Female Services Unit.

Trivalvia
26-05-2007, 21:46
Hm. Trivalvia never has had any major external threats, so its army is very small compared to its physical size and population. Roughly .1 percent is employed in the armed forces, and most of those are support personnel so:

Total personnel: 852,000
Ground Forces: 340,800 personnel / 48,686 troops (infantry, vehicle crews, etc)
Naval Forces: 426,000 / 60,857 troops (ship crews and marines)
Air Forces: 85,200 / 6,086 pilots

Equipment is a little lacking - I'll have to make some purchases.
Haraki
27-05-2007, 03:42
The Harakian active military is very small for the size of my nation (5+ Billion). I maintain around 35 divisions of approximately 10,000 combat troops each at all times as professional soldiers, plus non-divisional elements. Because there is no conscription and thus all soldiers are volunteers, if all divisions are full the joinee will be assigned to a non-divisional elements. Thanks to this system, the size of the divisions stays roughly the same, but the actual number of combat troops fluctuates between 400,000 to 650,000, based on circumstances.

Because I do have a very large military budget and very good economy, though, I also RP as having a large, effective, and powerful navy and air force, and I RP my soldiers being very, very good at what they do, and having the absolute best equipment available.

As well, I maintain large amounts of semi-professional soldiers, ranging from people who spend 3 days a week as a soldier and 3 days a week working, to people who spend three days every month as a soldier. There are millions of these guys, in increasing numbers as you get farther down. The more active, and thus better, ones will be deployed first, but because they work jobs they tend not to be deployed because of the impact on the economy.

There's also reserves, which are people who spend a weekend a month, or a weekend every two months, or whatever, being a soldier. Again, millions of these guys, but almost never mobilized thanks to the economic factors.

Really, the professional soldiers are it unless a major war is going on, and the upper tiers of semi-professionals are it unless I'm actually in need of millions upon millions of soldiers or I'm in threat of a land invasion.
Balrogga
27-05-2007, 04:12
The Balrogga Empire currently employs 5.2882 million individuals in it's armed forces as a standard default with the numbers swelling as needed for events. That works out a little less than 0.08% of the current total population.

These numbers allows plenty of room for expansion as needed.

I'm not going into details since I'm starting to get tired, but here is some basic stuff.
Peacetime: 1% of population
War: 1-2% of population (Depends on where and the size of the war)

The airforce has the most officers, but the navy has the most enlisted personnel. Also, just for the heck of it I'll add one more fact, there are only 3 branches in the military. The airforce, the navy and the army. The navy also acts as the coast guard and the army also acts as the marines.

All of this is OOC

Total Armed forces: 3.5 million
Knight forces: 50 000 Divine Celestial Cavaliers [Divine Celestial navy] 80 000 Knights of the Divine Kingdom, Ten thousand first knights of the Divine Kingdom, 350 000 Knights of Divine Celestial Navy [Mecha crew and ship crew/engineers, all are still trained for combat.]
Soldiery
1 million Replicant soldiers in the Grand Army of the Prefecture
1.13 million Tannelornian soldiers in the Greater Tannelornian Federal Operational Army, lead by 100 000 Knight-marines, formerly of the DCN.
800 000 Men at arms of the Divine Kingdom: Retainers to the order Militant, Strategic ground troops.
70 000 Knights of Grahfsberg.[Mecha pilots and ship crews, Grahfsberg crews man small ships, guiding heavier Bio-mech drone ships in battle.]

Tannelorn is divided in to four states. The Celestial Republic [population 4 billion, home to the knights of the DCN and DCC.] The Divine Kingdom, Feudal caste system. [Population 400 million, no space force.] The Prefecture Total Civilian Democracy [Population 3 billion] The Grahfsberg Federation: military dictatorship based on wandering asteroid cities. [population 1 billion, traditionalists, most of the knights are mecha force, no ground force.]

These states all maintain an army and navy [or one or the other.] Also there is a federal government, and a federal military and navy. The Republics Knights maintain the most powerful Navy in Tannelorn, whereas the Divine Kingdom the most powerful ground army. The Prefecture maintains a fleet of 70 battleships and 30 fleet carriers, and a million man army. 15% of the army number is devoted to fleet and fighter/mecha operation.

The federal army maintains a ground force of 1 million and a spacy of
130 000 members. Tannelornian ships have small crews, with plenty of automation. The space fleet totals 1000 vessels for the GTFOA of which 800 are heavy missile/drone frigates.

The GFN is primarily defensive mecha crew and ship crews of the small stealth frigates they use. DCN Knight crews are 50% Engineer, the rest combat ratings and spares. Mecha crew consist of 32000 Knights. These act as spacy and ground force combatants alongside the 50 000 strong Elite knights of the Divine Celestial Cavaliers.

The Divine Kingdoms forces are 100% devoted to ground warfare. They rely wholly on the GFN and GTFOA for naval protection.

Troop numbers(Wartime): 122,120,000 On duty, 152,216,000 Reserve
Troop numbers(Final Stand): 1,050,520,000 active, 345,280,000 Reserve

Peacetime is rare lately, only done after a war for rotation purposes.

Wartime is the current and most common deployment, TLA is a very parnoid country.

(Final Stand is for if an extemely powerful enemy makes landfall on TLA. The active number is the entire Nod faith, as well as existing forces, the rest are conscripts.)

TLA focuses heavly on the Navy, keeping at least 3 fleets on deployments and at 2 more at home.

The navies focus firstly on Speed, using fast attack craft and giving heavier ships stronger turbines and engines. This can lead to a scattered fleet which can cause several risks. A favoring for Guns over missiles are another difference in TLA's fleet, while they contain a mixture of both, Guns are used more often in shore bombardment.

The Sub fleet is run mostly by Nod, as most TLAns have a moral problem with sneak attacks.

Of the Army TLA has an immense Airborne\Quick Strike force. Airborne are the best trained force in TLA and while they have fought little they remain the most active force. Again keeping with the speed idealogy that TLA has. Regular units are well equipped and trained as well and are rotated often for morale purposes.

The Civilian population is given a basic 3 month weekend course rotated every 5 years in military tactics.

The TLA Marines are the second elite group in the nation. They have also one of the few groups that have seen action in the past.

The TLA Airforce contains a well mix of units, from superfast planes to slow defensive craft.

The AAFCOM (Asgarnian Armed Forces Command) is the combination of the Asgarnian military forces.

Emphasis is placed upon the Naval Force (Navy), as it provides the greatest long-range attack capability, and is second only to the Asgarnian National Defense Forces in capability of delivering nuclear armaments.

The second-most populous branch is the Army.

The AAFCOM is split into six branches and six sub-branches. A branch is a basic service element, specializing in certain types of warfare. A sub-branch is a sub-service under that specific branch. A sub-branch operates of its own free will, but its commanding officer and command or center of operations is within the parent branch.

The Reserves and National Guard are not normally utilized, and the reserves are split into six areas of service. A reservist is given the branch or sub-branch of service he or she will enter, and is trained according to their MOS choice. National Guards are personnel who operate under one of the three commands, and can switch between any branch or sub-branch within that command.

To put it simply:

Population: 6.97 Billion
Standing Military: ~180 million (~2.7% of pop and includes combat and logistics personnel)

As for where they go, the navy has the most, followed closely by the army and the airforce has whats left. This is mainly to do with how many people are required to run ships as opposed to tanks and planes because when it comes to funding and equipment the three branches are basically equal.

Around 100 million, but only about 30 million is active duty. The rest fall in to different classes of reserves, with the majority effectively being civilians with military training that can be called up for rapid mobilization if necessary.

It all hinges on our mobilization level.

Right now its about 450 million personnel and theyre actually spread evenly between Army and Navy. Standing is usually around 250 million. Around 18,000 oceangoing ships right now, 125,000 tanks, millions of artillery pieces, and in total around 380,000 aircraft.

Then again I am fully mobilised right now and massively gearing my economy towards total war.

50 million general personnel. All of them are combat capable but they generally fulfill logistical and support duties as necessary to get the job done.

It is important to note however that with their switch to morphic crystal bodies and the effective abandonment of their organic bodies, they do not worry quite as much about logistical issues except in terms of construction. Food and air don't quite matter to them anymore. Their bodies also have numerous advantages over their original forms. As a result, in any combat situation, the number of involved 'soldier' types in any form of boarding or ground campaign can typically be tallied up before one needs to start counting toes. Of course, that does not include their escort of Kython Drones which makes up for the Avatars' distinct lack of numbers.

17-45 Male Pop. (trained): 412,080,000
17-45 Male Pop. (untrained): 21,816,000

God bless microsoft excel. Once I've set up the workshet all I have to do is insert two numbers and all of my stats - from budgeting to manpower - are updated. And its easy to change.

Anyway, I spend a very large amount of money on training, and all male citizens are required to recieve basic training as well as a refresher course every set period of time - this is to ensure a healthy population of citizen soldiers ready to defend the fatherland relatively quickly without the expense and natural threat to liberty that comes with a large standing military (I'm considering 3% not too large).

I've been considering manipulating these numbers further, as I would like to get down to 1%, but I do have to maintain my Empire and have enough left over to defend allies. Should I cut it down soon?

The Indian Soviet Commonwealth of Beth Gellert is protected by the Commonwealth Guard, which, all in all, is one of the largest fighting organisations in history. As Strabo wrote of their ancestors, a large part of the Soviet population can be fairly called, "...madly fond of war, high-spirited and quick to battle... and on whatever pretext you stir them up, you will have them ready to face danger, even if they have nothing on their side but their own strength and courage".

Still, contrastingly, Soviet India officially disbanded its army following the peaceful February Revolution of 1989.

The Commonwealth Militia Expert Corps that replaced it is composed of approximately 0.075% of the population, or currently something like 6.5million personnel. This is an extremely well-funded force with a traditional focus on mobile infantry.

The Commonwealth Oceanic Guard Expert Corps, replacing the navy, receives a lower priority but still employs several million comrades and maintains nine flotillas plus semi-independent coastal and nuclear submarine forces. The Air Guard Expert Corps has somewhat higher priority and -in all branches- the Commonwealth maintains well over a fifth of a million military aircraft.

The Commonwealth Air and Oceanic Guard Auxiliary Corps are of fluctuating size and merely boost staffing of their associated Expert Corps branches during war time.

But the Commonwealth Militia Auxiliary Corps is the kicker, a homeland defence and counter-counterrevolution force in which not far from three and a half billion comrades are officially enrolled. That's a lot of inexpertly wielded Sten guns.

Naestoria
28-05-2007, 22:59
Population: almost 100 million
Active duty personnel: about 3.75 million
Reserves: ~38 million (in short, all adult males and females fit for military service)

Of the active duty personnel, about 1.15 million are combat (almost 75% of these are in the Naestorian Army-equivalent); the remaining 2.6 million are logistical personnel. These numbers are expected to maintain constant as the population of Naestoria increases; therefore, while the percentage appears high now, it will decrease over the next few years, especially if the planned merger with a non-player country goes through (RP will be forthcoming).

The reserves are basically people with the ability to use guns. The Academy mandates military training courses for everyone; in case of national emergency (invasion, rebellion), weapons will be distributed to all citizens. Additionally, every year, citizens are required to perform two weeks of military exercises (which they can perform at any point during the year), as part of the National Examinations.
