After recently reading Clancy's 'Hunt for Red October', I feel the need for a Submarine based rp.

It would be based along roughly the same plot of the book, with people taking the parts of different parties in the book.

I myself with either be RPing as the commander of 'Blue November', or maybe a Russian attack sub hunting it down.


Basically, you can either be an American or a Russian, you can be a sub commander, a surface ship commander, a recon plane pilot, listening post operator, whatever, you just have to find the sub!

This is an awesome rp idea. I actually contemplated starting one myself. I read the book and wathed the movie, loved both of them. Being a Russian attack sub commander sounds good for me.

This rp has a good potential. NS nations would be nice but then again the whole U.S./Russia standoff is cool.

When does this take place?

In the book and movie it takes place in 1984.

ok. Can you give me a quick summary of the book/movie?

It revolves around a Soviet Captain who is put in charge of a new Typhoon Class sub called The Red October. It has a revolutionary propulsion system nicknamed, the catapillar drive. It renders the sub virtually undetectable to sonar and other means of tracking. He and several officers decide to defect. The Captain's name is Ramius. He sends a letter to the head of the Red Banner Northern Fleet of his intentions, this gives his officers more motivation to carry out the plan. Ramius kills the political officer and sets sail. The Soviet navy mobilizes its' entire Northern Fleet, numbering around 100 surface ships and submarines to chace down and destroy the Red October. A CIA analyst struggles to uncover the truth and convence the U.S. that Ramius intends to defect. The Soviet embassy told the U.S. that he intends to fire his missles on the U.S. the two superpowers are on the brink of war as Soviet warships are 400 miles off U.S. costal waters. A game of cat and mouse ensues as the Red October struggles to survive and figure a way to get to the U.S. without being destroyed. That's the jist of it, you can find the whole thing on the web.

Ok. So lets say you requested to be a U.S. sub commander. What would you do?

The the book, a U.S. sub was shadowing outside the Soviet sub base in Murmansk and stumbled upon the Red October and followed it through the ocean. Also, for the rp, other subs could be dispatched to watch the Soviet surface fleet and keep them in check.

What can a P-3 pilot and his crew do?

Hunt the Blue November of course. If tensions reach the point to where the Soviet and American fleets engage in battle, the P-3 will can conduct anti-submarine ops as well as recon.

This rp has good potential. Making the rp better than the novel by Tom Clancy is daunting, but exciting to undertake.

Sure, we can do that. I don't know if Krasniy Oktyabr wants to be Captain Ramius still or what. I'm going to be a Soviet attack sub captain.

Brief History: Konovski was born from a Finnish mother and Russian father. He lived in St.Petersburg most of his life. His father was a minor member of the regional party and mother a school teacher. From a young age he grew up with Communism in his day to day life. Despite this, he disagreed with the COmmunist system imposed on the Soviet Union. But he rarely voiced his opinion, fearing reprocussions against him and his family. He recieved as good education and joined the Soviet Navy. He rose through the ranks and earned a commission. He's a natural leader and loved by his men. Konovski is also married with two children. Finally, he recieved orders to head the Akula Class submarine, K-517 Arkhangel (Archangel). (Might change name later). He has a deeps ense of duty and a methodical commander.

History: Andrew Grew up in Washington D.C. His father was in the millitary, and always encouraged Andrew to join as well. He never knew his mother because she died during Child Birth. He was promoted to Sub commander not too long ago so is a little nervous and inexperienced.

History: Joined the navy at 18 to become a fighter pilot, but instead became a P-3 Orion pilot. He mostly works border patrol, but has been deployed out in the world once. He has orders to work with a new crew that came fresh out of training to give them a intro to the U.S. navy life.

Brief History: The son of a Hero of the Soviet Union and a Stakhanovite worker, Lebedev was always destined for big things. He finished top of his class in classes at the Komsomol and later moved into the Navy academy for officers with the help of his Father's influence, though he was an exceptionally gifted naval officer. Adrik is married, with no children, to a rather stunning Moscow girl.
Finished unremarkable tours of duty, and was then posted to the E.S Politovsky, an Alfa Class Nuclear Attack Submarine, for his first command.

Born and raised in the stanitza (cossack village) of Veshenzkaya in the Don region, Southern Russia. Average performance in school. Served in a Naval Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet, decided to make a career in the army, for it has been a tradition in his family, for decades. After a couple of years in the Naval Infantry decided to switch branch - something extremely rare in the Soviet Military - and went to the Naval Academy in Kronstadt. Proved to be even better when commanding ship(s) than troops.
Rose through the ranks with astonishing speed, despite his lack of high-ranking supporters or connections to the upper stages of the party hierarchy.
Thought to be as one of the very best division commanders of the navy, despite his few shortcomings (to be revealed later). Popular within his crew, not so much so among his colleagues due to his young age compared to most of them, and his rather unconventional methods and tactical approach.

Current appointment: Commander of Slava (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slava_class_cruiser), the most modern missile cruiser of the Soviet Navy, as well as the 620nd Special Training Taskforce (a codename for a unit hastily deployed for the hunt of the Blue November), which includes - plus the mentioned cruiser - three Sovremenny (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovremenny_class_destroyer) class destroyers, supplied with some extra ASW equipment. This is not the only taskforce sent to the Atlantic, but Melehov doesn't know that yet. He has only a very shallow idea about his mission - he was just simply ordered to get his ship ready for a long trip.

An idea I had would be set at the collapse of the Soviet Union. Several hard-liners of the old regime and KGB take control of the Blue November in a last ditch effort to tip the balance back into Russia's favor. During the collapse, The Soviet Union splintered and fractured, making it economically and finacially weak. Fearful of NATO domination they seize the submarine and decided to sail for America, launching their missiles and crippiling the United States and creating a power vaccum from which other hard liner generals and members of the Communist Party would stage a simultaneous coup and take control of the Russian government.

There will have to be conspirators like generals, party members, and whoever. Also, NATO characters and CIA as well. Each of us may have to take on more than one roll.

At some point, the crew could end up taking back the Blue November but are unable to communicate and are still being hunted by the American and Russian navies. The Russian conspirators could say that the Blue November is trying to defect, getting backing from the navy while the coup takes place.

I like the idea of this RP, but I am still deciding whether to join or not.

I have to give you points on the name of the defector sub though, I personally would have went with Green December, but whatever :)

Well, perhaps we will need to do so. Also, we could have NATO forces working with the Americans to counter Russian naval activities. Perhaps I could double as a British surface commander as well or perhaps something else. We can all fill in minor minor roles but may need two main characters for ourselves. I'm undecided on what to be other than my already existing character..

Mind if I join in as a Norwegian (NATO) sub commander? After all, you have to pass off the northern tip of Norway to get into the Atlantic, and we used to have regular submarine patrols up there.

Could i just put in a little thought on the RP? It sounds pretty good to me so far, if you pull it off then this could be a pretty cool RP. However, i have noticed a distinct lack of any secret services etc, maybe adding an NPC or something into the equation somewhere along the lines so the other RPers know how to react and to what (like if your CIA genius thinks the russians are going to nuke the USA, ten any NATO forces would act more aggressively and get closer to russian forces for example).

Hopefully you get what i mean, just thought it would add another level to the RP. Also glad to see so many RPers, i'd guess even if someone had to drop out the RP could go on anyway, and NPC's can always provide a stop gap.

Well, we have enough sub commanders, surface captains, and pilots for the sea action. Perhaps each of us could have a second character which will be involved with the Russian conspiracy, CIA agents, KGB, and that whole part of the story.

To my understanding this is just using real nations in the cold war and role playing their forces, and under the re-enforcement of the NS RPing rules it breaks the Alternate History ruling by my understanding. I'd suggest remaking the RP but based on two NS nations, im sure you can find two nations with a good geography who will let you RP as their nations, but i would check exactly what you would do to be allowed to carry on with this RP on the thread (Scolopendra replies very quickly).

Using the actual Real Earth countries (culture, history, et al), and thus essentially being a carbon copy of a Real Earth country, is not

Whether thats true or not i don't know, i'd probably agree but its the rules so moving it off site or changing it might might be a good idea. I just don't want this RP to go to waste, as the whole idea is excellent in the first place.

Ok, lets just Make it instead of the US, the name of a member, and instead of Russia, another Member. It's so simple to change it. But still use Real life locations... just say for this roleplay they exist in your country.
